Final Words
The Alienware m18 is the most powerful and the heaviest gaming laptop we have looked at so far. Our fully-loaded review unit really lives up to the name “desktop replacement.” It has cutting-edge performance in a package that is still somewhat portable. The Blade 18 and Asus ROG Strix Scar 18 both have keyboards that don’t feel as good as the Alienware m18’s low-profile CherryMX mechanical keys.
Both are lighter than the m18 and have brighter screens, but that doesn’t matter as much when you consider that these laptops will probably spend most of their time on a desk inside. Not for nothing are they called “desktop replacements.”

Gaming on the Alienware m18 R1
Undoubtedly, the Alienware m18 R1 comes to the table with some impressive hardware credentials. Our review sample included a Core i9-13980HX processor, GeForce RTX 4090 GPU, and a healthy 32GB of DDR5-4800 memory.
When playing Overwatch 2, I saw frame rates hover between 400 and 460 frames per second during online gameplay with the Ultra graphics setting toggled to try to take advantage of the blazing fast display. Gameplay was fast and fluid, although the advantages that I could have extracted with this high-performance display were wasted, given that I’m an average first person shooter player at best. I, more often than not, find myself on the receiving end of a well-placed bullet.

The m18 R1 finds itself pitted against a trio of Raptor Lake / GeForce RTX 40 Series-equipped rivals from Asus, including the ROG Strix Scar 18 (Core i9-13980HX, RTX 4090, 1600p), MSI Raider GE78 HX (Core i9-13950HX, RTX 4080, 1600p) and the ROG Zephyrus Duo 16 (Ryzen 9 7945HX, RTX 4090, 1600p). We can confidently say that the m18 R1 was an absolute beast in our gaming benchmark suite. It took top honors across the board in the 1080p and 1200p tests.
In Shadow of the Tomb Raider, the m18 R1 (192 fps) edged out the ROG Strix Scar 18 (181 fps), while the ROG Zephyrus Duo 16, which also has an RTX 4090, could only muster 151 fps at 1080p. The MSI Raider GE78 HX, with its RTX 4080, was just a few paces back at 181 fps at 1080p. All of the rest of the competitors in this field have 1600p screens, which is why you see such a steep falloff on the chart compared to their performance at 1080p due to them pushing a lot more pixels. For example, the m18 R1 has a minimal drop to 163 fps at 1200p, while the ROG Strix Scar 18 hit 124 fps at 1600p.
The m18 R1 continued its 1080p winning streak in Grand Theft Auto V, where it recorded 181 fps, and stepped down just slightly to 175 fps at 1200p resolution. The MSI Raider GE78 HX and ROG Zephyrus Duo 16 weren’t far behind, coming in at 157 fps and 158 fps, respectively, at 1080p. However, both machines saw a more substantial drop at 1600p resolution, with the former hitting 88 fps.
Far Cry 6 again saw the m18 R1 (123 fps) open a wide lead over the second-place ROG Strix Scar 18 (107 fps) at 1080p. While the m18 R1 saw a small drop to 121 fps at 1200p, the relative drop in performance at 1600p wasn’t excessive for the competition.
We witnessed the m18 R1 charge ahead again in the Red Dead Redemption 2 benchmark at 135 fps at 1080p resolution, blowing past the ROG Strix Scar 18 at 123 fps. Unfortunately, the ROG Zephyrus Duo 16 pulled up last place with 107 fps at 1080p; the Ryzen 9 7945HX didn’t have enough to push the RTX 4090 into contention with the 18-inch big boys.
Finally, the Alienware m18 R1 took on all challengers in Borderlands 3, and emerged victorious with 186 fps at 1080p, and an equally impressive 176 fps at 1200p. The ROG Strix Scar 18 also showed strong promise at 1080p with 165 fps, dropping to 112 fps at 1600p.
Our Metro Exodus stress test puts systems through 15 runs at 1080p using the RTX preset. The m18 R1 averaged 114.23 fps, which was consistent across all the runs. The Core i9-13980HX’s performance cores averaged 4.39 GHz, while the efficiency cores ran at 3.05 GHz and the CPU package measured 95.3 degrees Celsius. As for the GeForce RTX 4090, it averaged 2,220.13 MHz at 64.15 C.
Alienware m18: Price & availability
- Starting at $1,999.99 / £2,068.99 / around AU$2,999
- Available now
- Available in the US and UK, and Australia
For a desktop replacement, the Alienware m18 pricing starts at a rather affordable rate of $1,999.99 / £2,068.99 / around AU$2,999 – still expensive but definitely leagues cheaper than the current competition. But if you’re getting a hardcore gaming machine 512GB of storage isn’t what you’re looking for. Even my own review unit, priced at $3,549 / £3,299.99 / around AU$5,316, is far cheaper than the Lenovo Legion 7i Pro and around the same price as the Asus ROG Zephyrus M16 (2023) and has similar specs to both.
As with most other Dell products, this laptop is available in a wide variety of regions, including the US, UK, and Australia. The UK is mostly the same as the US in terms of specs and pricing, with the exception of the 480Hz display panel that’s only available for lower specs, which is an odd choice to say the least. Meanwhile, Australia has only one high-spec model equipped with the RTX 4080 and packing 64GB of RAM, but there’s no 480Hz option either.

Should you buy it?
If you want a laptop as a desktop replacement
If you are after a desktop in laptop form, then the Alienware M18 is hard to beat. With towering performance and a large 16:10 display, you can enjoy even the most visually extravagant and demanding games without recourse to a separate monitor.
If you want something genuinely mobile
The size and weight of the Alienware M18, combined with the low battery run time, mitigate against using it on the go. It may be a fine distinction, but the M18 is more portable than mobile.
Final Thoughts
Thanks to Alienware’s wide range of options, you can pick up an M18 for well under £2000/$2000, but let’s assume you are after a high-end model with an RTX 4080 or better GPU, then you will be spending around £3000/$3000 or more. For that sort of money, you can get the 17-inch Medion Erazer Beast X40, Razer’s Blade 18 or the Asus ROG Strix Scar 18.
The Medion is worth consideration because it represents excellent value and comes with a mechanical keyboard as standard. If a super-fast display is what you are after, don’t forget the Gigabyte Aorus 17H, which pairs an RTX 4080 GPU with a 360Hz display. For just over £2000/$2000, it’s an eSports laptop par excellence.
None of those machines are as physically imposing and visually extreme as the new Alienware M18. Every time I took it down from the shelf and opened it up, the sheer over-the-top size and styling brought a cheese-eating grin to my face, and that’s what I want when spending this sort of money on a gaming laptop. Design and Keyboard
- Unique styling stands out in the crowd
- Heavier and bigger than the competition
- Good RGB backlit keyboard
Visually, the Alienware M18 looks like a big Alienware M16, which is not a bad thing in my book. But it is on the large side, measuring 410 x 320 x 26.7mm and weighing a whopping 4.04kg, which is far heavier than the 18-inch competition from the likes of Asus ROG and Razer. There’s no denying that the M18 is a very well-made laptop, as it should be given it’s made mainly from aluminium, but that solidity does come at a weight cost.
All the traditional Alienware styling cues are present and correct, including the big backend sticking out beyond the hinge assembly, the LED alien head logo on the deck and lid (the former is also the power button), and the Stadium LED ring light around the rear ports. If the sheer size isn’t enough of a giveaway, a big “18” is embossed on the lid. As designs go, it is as visually dramatic as they come.

The M18 has more ports than the M16, and the layout is better. On the left are two USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 ports, a 2.5G Ethernet port and a 3.5mm audio jack, while on the right, there is now a USB-C 3.2 Gen 1 data port. Tucked away at the back are two Thunderbolt 4 ports, HDMI 2.1 and Mini DisplayPort 1.4 video outputs, an SD card slot, a third USB-A port, and the DC power jack.
Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are handled by a Killer AX1690i card, which supports the latest 6Ghz Wi-Fi 6E frequencies and Bluetooth 5.3.
None of the Type-C ports supports PD charging, but the 330W power brick is lighter and more compact than most (600g, 185 x 85 x 25mm), so this is not the end of the world.
Unscrew the base, and you can access the two SODIMM slots, the wireless card, the battery, and no less than four SSD mounts, so you can add up to 9TB of storage. The 1TB SSD in my review machine performed well, returning sequential read and write speeds of 5,515MB/s and 4,002MB/s, respectively.
The chiclet keyboard is spacious, with a solid deck and well-calibrated key action. It’s a bit plain for a gaming keyboard: It has none of the enhancements – like highlighted WASD and cursor keys or a dedicated key to launch the Alienware Command Centre – that you find on the likes of the ROG Strix Scar 18, though you can engage High-Performance mode by pushing F1.
In the plus column, you get full-sized arrow keys, dedicated volume controls in the top-right corner, a full numeric keypad – something the Razer Blade 18 lacks – and per-key RGB lighting. The keyboard lighting is straightforward to adjust, unlike in some laptops I could name, which require you to jump through hoops to change the colour of a few keys.
At 130 x 80mm, the glass touchpad looks relatively small, a side effect of the amount of space around it and the overall size of the M18. Alienware could have gone for something more extensive, but it works perfectly well and has a well-weighted and positive click-action.
Alienware makes no claims for the M18’s environmental pedigree, but high-end gaming laptops tend not to be the most eco-conscious of gadgets, so that’s no big surprise. The packaging does better, with the only non-cardboard aspect being a plastic tray to keep the M18 from sliding around. It can be recycled as any other plastic in domestic waste.

Upgradeability on the Alienware m18 R1
Accessing the inside of the Alienware m18 R1 is accomplished by removing eight Philips head screws from its bottom panel. Once the screws are removed, the bottom panel lifts off, providing direct access to a bevy of user-replaceable components.

Before getting my hands on the Alienware M18, the Asus ROG Strix Scar 18 was the most powerful gaming laptop I had tested. That still stands, but the M18 has come closest to knocking it off its podium. With blazingly fast benchmarks that beat the Scar in a couple of areas, though do lag slightly behind in the majority of tests, the M18 is an absolute powerhouse. I saw three figure framerates across all tests in the highest of graphics settings, which we’ve come to take for granted across 18-inch RTX 40-Series devices these days. However, even trickier ray tracing efforts were met with incredible power. DLSS 3 manages to push everything into a new dimension here, with the component power and cooling tech to keep it all running smoothly as well.
The M18 beat the Scar 18 in Time Spy score and in-game benchmarking across Returnal and Total War: Three Kingdoms, two more demanding titles that the Scar 18 couldn’t quite keep up with. While you will get a more well-rounded power level with the Scar 18, then, there are some spikes to the M18’s performance that keep it in the fight.
This is the kind of performance we expect from a machine making a bid to take over from a full desktop PC. You’ll be paying for those higher framerates in a far more expensive configuration, but if you’re after new generation power in an all-in-one machine there’s certainly nothing to hold you back here.
