Our opinion on the Dell Inspiron 16 7620 2-in-1: Tablet mode on the big screen, asset or gimmick?
Attractive in many ways, the Dell Inspiron 16 7620 2-in-1 has no real weak point. The FHD + screen, the keyboard, the touchpad or the connectors are all doing very well, the performance is up to par and the autonomy like the speakers makes a strong impression.
Now, behind the question of the usefulness of a convertible mode on a 16-inch laptop PC, there are two issues, the weight and the size which are far from negligible in handling and the additional cost linked to the tablet configuration. For us, with the exception of improvised series viewing for which the tent mode lends itself well, the interest is not there. More objectively, this Dell Inspiron 16 7620 2-in-1 is a very good PC for the user who is looking for the comfort of a large screen and the modularity of touch/convertible.

The Dell Inspiron 16 2-in-1 is well designed, with a weighty and strong aluminum chassis balanced by a thin figure. Its thin build, large screen size, and strong chassis make it feel more resistant than the average 2-in-1, which tends to be much more fragile. However, it’s thanks to that sturdy design that we have a 2-in-1 that weighs five pounds. In terms of style, the choice of silver or dark green colors helps to make the laptop pop more against the sea of black laptops on the market.
As with any 2-in-1, the Dell Inspiron 16 2-in-1 has a touchscreen, and a good quality one at that. It responds well to each touch command, with no delay between the touch command and its execution. The only downside is the glare, which shows up in spades when exposed to direct sunlight. Unfortunately, the Inspiron 16 2-in-1 doesn’t come with a stylus.
The display itself is 1080p FHD+ with a 1080p webcam, translating to beautifully represented colors useful for work or play and a good camera that will show off your face with minimal pixelation. The mechanical slider for the camera is located in the top middle of the bezel, which would otherwise look a bit too thick, has a purpose here and it’s great privacy feature to have.
Though this keyboard doesn’t have a numpad, its simplicity suits the nature of the machine. The keyboard’s color can be customized between black or grey when purchasing, and there’s a lovely backlight that’s useful for dark or poorly lit areas. The keys and touchpad are well-sized and have a silky velvet-like quality that catches your fingers and makes it easier to type and less likely to make typos.
The laptop’s port situation is well-varied, with two each of the USB Type-A and Type-C Thunderbolt 4 ports, one headset (headphone and microphone combo) port, one HDMI 1.4 port, and one SD-card slot. This cements the Dell Inspiron 16 2-in-1’s flexible nature as a machine that can handle work-related tasks, gaming, and more. And the 16-inch version doesn’t have the same issue of it being difficult to remove a Thunderbolt 4 charger from the port as it was with the 14-inch version.

Display & audio
Dell’s XPS lineup pioneered the “Infinity Edge” display, where bezels are super slim. The display on this Dell Inspiron 16 2-in-1 7620 is clearly inspired by that, though toned down a bit. This is yet another win for students looking for a new laptop.
The bezels on the side of the display are slim, but along the top, a bit thick for the webcam. The same also applies to the bottom, where you’ll find a small black “chin.” This helps you hold the 2-in-1 as a tablet when folded so you don’t accidentally touch the screen.
In terms of quality, though, the 16:10 aspect ratio on this year’s Dell Inspiron 16 2-in-1 7620 is a huge boost for productivity. Along with the massive 16-inch panel you get, this means I’m able to stack two near full-size Microsoft Edge windows side by side and multitask to get more done.
16:10 allows for more vertical room on the screen. Black text looks super sharp, and white colors are very bright and vibrant. The glass glossy panel also helps reduce glare a bit, especially when under bright lights. I noticed on backlight bleed.
In terms of color accuracy, my colorimeter tells me that this display hits 95% of the sRGB spectrum. Brightness also hits 320 nits max. To try out that color accuracy outside of benchmarks, I watched episodes of Amazon’s The Terminal List. In this dark show, I accurately made out the details on Reec’s face after he came out of a fresh gunfight in San Francisco. Scars, his blood, and even black gunpowder were all visible and life-like That leads me to say that this display will be great for multimedia and that the 4K OLED option will only be better.
Dell says that the display uses DC dimming technology. This helps reduce flicker. The display even supports ComfortView Plus, to help reduce blue light emissions, without giving up on color.
As far as audio goes, there are quad speakers on board, with Waves MaxxAudio. A lot of the audio comes from the sides of the keyboard deck, which makes movies and YouTube watching immersive. All of the 4 speakers are 2 watts, so the sounds you hear will be really great. I felt that this applies to music, as well as audio calls.
Dell G16 battery life
The Dell G16’s battery life is its Achilles heel. Although its performance is impressive, it won’t survive very long on a single charge. On the Laptop Mag battery test, which involves continuous web surfing over Wi-Fi at 150 nits, the Dell G16 lasted only 4 hours.

This is a little lower than the mainstream average of 4:30 minutes, so if you want a laptop that you can take on the go, this probably isn’t your best bet. Its competitors blew it out of the water, with the Asus ROG Zephyrus M16 (6:34), the Lenovo Legion 5 Pro (6:16), and the MSI Crosshair 15 (7:03) absolutely demolishing it.

Dell G16 performance
The Dell G16 is packing an Intel Core i7-12700H CPU, 16GB of RAM, and 512GB of SSD storage, giving it more than enough power to handle all sorts of tasks at once. If you want to watch a movie while working with dozens of Google Chrome tabs, using YouTube, Twitch, Google Docs, and Sheets with music playing in the background, this laptop can handle it with ease.

On the Geekbench 5.4 overall performance test, the Dell G16’s multi-core score of 12,043 absolutely demolished the category average of 7,396. It’s also a considerable improvement over the Legion 5 Pro (Ryzen 7 5800H CPU, 7,342), the Zephyrus M16’s (Intel Core i9-12900H CPU, 11,225), and the MSI Crosshair 15 R6E (i7-12700H CPU, 10,578).
The Dell G16 converted a 4K video to 1080p resolution using the HandBrake app in 6 minutes and 23 seconds. This is a phenomenal time and easily outshines the mainstream average of 8:22, while also soaring ahead of the Legion 5 Pro (7:06), Zephyrus M16 (7:05), and MSI Crosshair 15 R6E (6:44).
While the G16 has been knocking it out of the park in performance until now, it didn’t do as well in our file transfer test — duplicating 25GB of multimedia files in 36 seconds for a 745.4 megabytes per second (MBps) transfer rate. While this is a slight improvement over the Crosshair 15 (1TB PCIe SSD, 728.2MBps), it’s worse than the 784MBps average, the Zephyrus M16 (1TB M.2 NVMe PCIe 4.0, 1,871MBps), and the Legion 5 Pro (512GB PCIe SSD, 832.7MBps).
Gaming Performance: Exploring the RTX 3060 and 165Hz Display
When you’re deep into a gaming session, the real-time action’s smoothness is crucial, and I found the Dell G16 7620 Gaming Laptop delivers big time on that front. The 165Hz refresh rate on a 16” QHD display is a sweet spot for both competitive and immersive gaming. Fast-paced titles like “Overwatch” or “CS:GO” benefit immensely from the higher refresh rate. It makes a noticeable difference – movements are silkier, and input lag is significantly reduced. I’d say it’s an edge that any gamer would appreciate.
The RTX 3060 graphics card is a powerhouse for this laptop’s price point. It can handle most modern games at high settings without breaking a sweat. Paired with the vivid and sharp 2560×1600 resolution, you get a graphical feast for the eyes. Sure, it’s not the top-of-the-line card, but for the majority of gamers, it’s a solid performer that doesn’t leave you wanting much more.

The thermal design is something I’d usually gloss over, but it surprised me here. The Alienware-inspired cooling system keeps performance stable even during marathon sessions – a common issue with many high-performance laptops. However, noise levels can spike when the system is being pushed to its limits.
One more thing I like is how the laptop feels tailored for gamers, from its RGB backlit keyboard to the overall build quality. It’s not just a throw-in; you can tell that there’s been some serious thought put into its design.
Lastly, considering the pre-installed Windows 11 Home, you’re getting an up-to-date system straight out of the box. It’s familiar, it’s functional, and it complements the laptop’s gaming prowess well.
Dell G16 gaming and graphics
The Dell G16 has a Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 GPU with 6GB of VRAM, which is solid enough to play modern games at decent frame rates. I’m actually pretty impressed by how competently this beast matched up against laptops with more powerful GPUs. For example, in our performance tests, it was only slightly behind the Crosshair 15, even though that laptop has an RTX 3070 GPU.

It’s important to keep in mind that due to the GPU’s 6GB of VRAM, you might not be able to crank the settings up in certain cases, even if you were willing to do so by sacrificing frame rate. With Doom Eternal, I could not set it to Nightmare or Ultra Nightmare, but managed to set the graphics to Ultra. On the upside, I hit an average of 125 frames per second playing the game at 2K resolution with these settings.
On our Borderlands 3 test, the G16 put up a decent fight against its competitors, managing 74 fps at 1080p, which beat the category average (66 fps). It squeaked by the Zephyrus M16 (Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 Ti, 73 fps), but it paled in comparison to the Crosshair 15 (Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070, 82 fps) and the Legion Pro 5 (Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 GPU, 80 fps).
The Dell G16 played Assassin’s Creed Valhalla on Ultra settings and managed an average of 69 fps at 1080p. Unfortunately, this isn’t as good as the category average (74 fps), the Zephyrus M16 (72 fps), or the Crosshair 15 (78 fps), but it is still pretty solid performance for an RTX 3060.

During the Far Cry New Dawn benchmark, the G16 reached 104 fps, sailing past the category average (83 fps), the Zephyrus M16 (94 fps), and the Crosshair 15 (94 fps).
When testing Grand Theft Auto V, the Dell G16 got 94 fps. This is better than our 85 fps category average and the Legion 5 Pro (66 fps), but it underperformed when compared to the MSI Crosshair 15 (113 fps).
The Dell G16 performed admirably running Red Dead Redemption 2, hitting 60 fps at 1080p, which is on a par with the Zephyrus M16 (60 fps). It’s also better than the category average (58 fps), but it’s worse than the Legion 5 Pro (66 fps) and the Crosshair 15 (67 fps).
The Dell G16 didn’t do as well with Shadow of the Tomb Raider, only reaching 76 fps at 1080p. While this is just slightly better than the 73 fps mainstream average, it is a considerable downgrade from the Legion 5 Pro (80 fps), Zephyrus M16 (82 fps), and the Crosshair 15 (92 fps).
Keyboard & Trackpad
Students will spend a lot of time on the keyboard and trackpad on this Inspiron, and the good news is that both are awesome to use for day-to-day tasks.
The trackpad on the Dell Inspiron 16 2-in-1 7620 is one of the largest I’ve seen on a laptop. While it is not haptic like on the new XPS 13 Plus models, it is smooth to use and scroll and gives some great “loud” feedback. For dimensions, it measures around 5.2 x 3.5 inches. There is no “top” part to the touchpad either, as it blends right in with the mylar palm rests. Such a cool look!
The touchpad leaves a lot of room for multitouch gestures, navigating Windows, and dragging and dropping. It also seems to pick up fewer fingerprints than my other laptops, mainly due to the mylar layer on top, that’s used in the palm rest. Again, this is great for students.
As far as the keyboard, it reminds me of a lot of other Inspiron laptops. The black chicklet-style keycaps have a soft feeling and aren’t quite as clicky as the keys on a MacBook Pro or Surface Laptop would be. Still, that soft feeling helps with speed typing. I got to 84 words per minute in a typing test. The keyboard is also backlit on two levels so you can type at night. Dell even claims it is spill-resistant, though this isn’t something I tested.

For its specs, the Dell Inspiron 16 2-in-1 (2022) has some of the best performance of any 2-in-1 we’ve tested all year. The 14-inch version is already excellent compared to most of its competitors and this 16-inch version is even more so. It balances streaming, multiple documents, video/voice calls, and more all without slowdown. It’s also capable of running low and mid-range games like Sid Meyer’s Civilization VI and on the higher settings, it can achieve at least 50 FPS.
In the other benchmarks, the Dell Inspiron 16 2-in-1 outperformed the 14-inch version in almost every test except for two. The first was the Geekbench single-core test, in which it performed at nearly 50% less than the 14-inch laptop. And the second was the Civilization VI benchmark, in which the 16-inch scored 10 frames less than the 14-inch. Despite these oddities, the 16-inch still performs far better in real life than its counterpart.
Switching to tablet mode is where this 2-in-1 really shines, as the 16-inch FHD+ display makes nearly any image vibrant and colorful. Meanwhile, the touch controls itself are just as responsive as using the trackpad and keyboard, even when playing games that support it. This is where our frustration rises as it’s such a missed opportunity for the laptop to have a tablet pen included, as it would pair perfectly as another method for either working or for gaming.
The webcam is also quite good, having 1080p HD resolution and running at 30 FPS stable. Many laptops near or at the Dell Inspiron 16 2-in-1’s price point either don’t have a camera at all or it’s a low-quality 720p. It’s refreshing to see a laptop take its webcam game seriously and give users a proper quality one that’s well-suited for video chats and large-scale video meetings.
Sound-quality, though nothing mind-blowing, is surprisingly competent with a four-speaker setup that makes the gaming and streaming experience more immersive. Most of the intricacies of the music or sound effects in gaming come through well, and in streaming each piece of sound design and music comes through with that same level of quality.

Dell G16 heat
The Dell G16 stays at a manageable temperature when you aren’t gaming, but as soon as you jump into demanding software, it’ll get hot and toasty. In our non-gaming tests, which involved playing a 1080p video for 15 minutes, its hottest only got to 92 degrees Fahrenheit (at the underside, near the vents). Otherwise, the touchpad was 78 degrees, the underside 87 degrees, and the center of the keyboard was 81.

When gaming, this powerhouse far exceeds our 95-degree comfort threshold, coming in at 119 degrees at its hottest, once again on the underside, near the vents. Otherwise, the touchpad comes at 84 degrees, while the center of the keyboard and underside hit 96 degrees and 113, respectively.
The Dell G16 also sounds like an airplane preparing for liftoff while gaming, so unless that soundscape soothes you, it’s worth keeping in mind.
Performance
Now, I get to the critical performance section. Intel’s P-series chips that are in this device are designed to run at low power (28 watts) but offer similar balanced performance when compared to 45-watt H-series chips. They’re found in thin and light laptops, as well as work laptops, and are mid-range in the 12th generation mobile lineup. Basically, think of it like this. U-series are at the very bottom for tablets and ultrabooks, P-series in middle for work laptops, and H-series up top for gaming machines.
Equipped with the Intel Core i7-1260p, with a total of 12 cores (4 performance and 8 efficient), that means this Dell Inspiron 16 2-in-1 7620 strikes the perfect balance of performance.
Here are the tests that I usually run to prove it. In Cinebench R23, the machine scored 10,752 on Multi-Core, and 1,668 on Single-Core. On Geekbench 5, the machine got to a 7,607 Multi-Core score, and a 1,683 Single-Core score.
In gaming at 1080p, GTA V played at 59FPS on low settings, around 70 frames on medium, and 15 frames on high. Do note that the system doesn’t get too hot during the use and running of these tests. Only the edges near the back pick up heat.
We don’t keep benchmarks like other publications for you to compare that to. Instead, we talk about real-life tasks. But, if a comparison is what you want, I think that this system easily comes close in performance to Lenovo’s Yoga 9i, which my colleague Kareem Anderson reviewed. That system has the same CPU. It is just that the Dell has a bigger, and better, design and overall package.
For office and school work like browsing Edge and using Office, this machine speeds through it without issues. For video editing, the Inspiron gets by, but very slowly, with an hour podcast taking roughly 20 minutes to encode. That’s not a surprise, though, as this is a P-series chip where raw CPU power and cooling for maximum efficiency don’t really come first. It’s still a big change from the 11th gen, however, where these tasks might be slower.
You obviously won’t be doing gaming or video editing on this machine, but you can get by if you’re patient enough and lower the settings. Or, get even better results if you opt for a model with dedicated Nvidia graphics.
Dell Inspiron 16 2-in-1 (7620) audio#
Welp, if you open this laptop up and start using it, you might notice that you don’t hear any audio. After a few minutes of fiddling, I found my way to the Waves MaxxAudio Pro audio software that Dell ships the Inspiron 16 with. It was active, naturally, but when I turned it off, voilà — sound. Raw, untuned sound. However, with its top-firing and bottom-firing speakers, the Dell Inspiron 16 2-in-1 (7620) sounded OK.
I listened to “lullaby” by Against The Current, and the opening bassy beats were a little too distant for my taste. The vocals were crisp during the chorus, but the guitar was muddled up with the percussion. Everything in between was loud and messy, but it’s not ear-splitting or too sharp.

Effective for productivity
In terms of performance, the Dell Inspiron 16 7620 2in1 can count on the latest generation of Intel processors (12th gen) with its Core i7-1260P (12 cores, TDP 28W), assisted by 16 GB RAM and a storage 512 GB SSD.
In reality, Dell operates the processor at 25W stabilized, which does not change much in practice, but does not take advantage of its full potential. We stay on a versatile CPU that supports all office automation and multimedia tasks without flinching, even those that require a little calculation (occasional software development). It’s not the best configuration for performing video editing or advanced photo editing, but it’s quite possible as long as you don’t expect record execution times.
Temperatures were never an issue when tested with the CPU peaking at 80°C then stabilized around 70°C. Similarly, the noise from the ventilation did not not exceed 43 dBA in intensive use and in a frequency that does not interfere in any way. The rest of the time, the ventilation is almost inaudible.
Speaking of sound, the Dell Inspiron 16 7620 is equipped with 4 speakers which are doing quite well in terms of restitution with an above-average audio experience. The sound is powerful, well detailed and balanced. That’s rare enough on a laptop to mention, especially at these prices.
The final area where the Inspiron stands out is theautonomy of 11h in current use allows you to be away from a power outlet for a full day without worrying. And if necessary, the supplied charger is compact (200g; 115x50x30 mm) and it is quite possible to recharge the PC via the USB-C port.

Dell software that comes preinstalled on the laptop include SupportAssist, which helps your laptop stay safe and up to date by combating malware, scanning for issues and informing you of necessary updates. My Dell is a one-stop-all application, which can analyze system health, connect accessories or devices, and personalize your windows system. It features many of the same uses that your base Windows system does; it just attempts to put it all in one place.
Alienware Command Center allows you to control various features available on your laptop, and in this case, you can use it to modify the keyboard’s RGB backlight in-depth. You can also gain information on your GPU to see how much memory it’s using and how hot it is.
