Temperature and Power Efficiency

You’ve probably heard that the Ada Lovelace generation and GeForce RTX 40 Series lineup has incredible power efficiency compared to the previous Ampere generation and AMD’s RDNA 3 flagship cards. The GeForce RTX 4070 takes this to a new level regarding improved performance and doing more with less.

The 1440p power usage across the 15 games benchmarked above is the most power-efficient card included in our testing lineup. It provides a generational leap over the GeForce RTX 3070 and uses roughly 10% less power. With in-game performance on par with the GeForce RTX 3080, the MSI GeForce RTX 4070 Ventus 3X 12G manages this using an incredible 38% less power in 1440p.

As the MSI GeForce RTX 4070 Ventus 3X 12G uses the more traditional single 8-pin power connector to deliver its 200W, interestingly, on average, it uses more power than the Founders Edition model from NVIDIA. For 1080p gaming, the average power usage is 6% higher than the GeForce RTX 4070 Founders Edition, and for 1440p gaming, the average power usage is 5% higher. Similar benchmark results indicate more efficient power delivery via the new 16-pin power connector.

Not only is it a power-efficient 1440p-capable GPU, but the MSI GeForce RTX 4070 Ventus 3X 12G is quiet and cool, with temperatures under full load staying below 65 degrees. During 1440p gaming, this was closer to the 61-degree mark on average, slightly higher than the Founders Edition model. Still, fan speeds consistently remain around 40%, so the overall noise is lower than expected. With the MSI GeForce RTX 4070 Ventus 3X 12G, you’ve got an efficient and fantastic two-slot GPU.

There’s enough headroom to slightly overclock the MSI GeForce RTX 4070 Ventus 3X 12G to deliver a few extra frames per second without worrying about stability issues.

Schenker Vision 16 Pro RTX 4070 display

Schenker Vision 16 Pro RTX 4070 is equipped with a IPS 16.0-inches display with a resolution of 2560 x 1600 pixels and 16:10 aspect ratio. The pixel density is high enough that they cannot be seen. Working with such a display is a real pleasure, especially if you are engaged in graphics or video editing.

Display refresh rate is 240 Hz. This is a real gaming screen for esports players. The downside of this speed is increased power consumption. Therefore, if battery life is important to you, consider slower options. Few people will be able to feel the difference between 90 Hz and 240 Hz in everyday tasks.

The Schenker Vision 16 Pro RTX 4070 display brightness averaged 350 nits. This is good for comfortable work indoors, perhaps outdoors on a cloudy day. In the bright sun, if I were you, I would not expect that you will be able to see anything on the screen.

Schenker Vision 16 Pro RTX 4070 display contrast ratio is 1250:1 which is a great. The picture looks crisp and clear. It’s especially nice to watch movies on such a screen. The screen is matte. Hit like button if you’re glossy screen fan! Subscribe to our channel if you prefer matte.

IPS displays have proven themselves very well in mobile devices, thanks to excellent viewing angles and good color reproduction at a low cost of production. Schenker Vision 16 Pro RTX 4070 inherited the advantages of IPS panels, however, it was not without drawbacks.

Our colorimeter measurements showed 98% coverage of the color space sRGB. This is awesome, especially for games and movies, where the vivid colors is important. The Schenker Vision 16 Pro RTX 4070 display is well calibrated by default, the gamma curve conforms to the standard, only slightly deviating from the standard, but you are unlikely to notice it with the naked eye.

The white point is noticeably shifted to the cold area. For professional use, I would recommend calibrating the display. The color rendering “out of the box” is mediocre, and additional tuning is required if you plan to professionally work with photos or videos.

The Founders Edition version of the RTX 4070 we reviewed is considerably smaller in every dimension than the Founders Edition RTX 4080 and RTX 4090, plus most of the 4070/4070 Ti/4080/4090 cards from Nvidia’s partners. The two-slot GPU is just 240 mm long (compared to 310 mm for the 4080/4090) and 40 mm tall (compared to 61 mm). That’s before you account for the extra space taken up by the 12VHPWR-to-8-pin power connector, which is still pretty bulky even though it only requires a pair of 8-pin connections rather than three or four. But it’s still a small enough card to fit in just about any PC case, including prebuilt OEM mini-towers and tiny custom ITX builds.

The RTX 4070 has a lot in common with the 4070 Ti, the GPU originally announced as the «RTX 4080 12GB» before being «unlaunched» and relaunched. They share the same AD104 GPU die, a smaller chip than the AD102 flagship used in the RTX 4090 or the AD103 used in the 4080 series. They also both use 12GB of GDDR6X memory on a 192-bit interface. The 4070 has fewer CUDA cores (5,888, down from 7,680), but the 4070 and 4070 Ti are much more similar than the 16GB and 12GB RTX 4080 cards would have been.

The 4070 Founders Edition is small, but the included 12VHPWR adapter does add bulk. Some newer power supplies include a native 12VHPWR connector.

That 192-bit memory interface is narrower than the 256-bit interface used by the 3070 and 3070 Ti, which Nvidia has compensated for by adding 32MB of extra L2 cache to the 4070 (for a total of 36MB). That cache and much faster base and boost clock speeds are the 4070’s biggest improvements over the last-gen cards.

Because it shares the same Ada Lovelace architecture as the other RTX 4000 GPUs, the RTX 4070 also supports Nvidia’s new DLSS 3 and the accompanying DLSS Frame Generation (DLSS FG) features. DLSS is AI-assisted upscaling that takes a lower-resolution image rendered by your GPU and upscales it, improving frame rates at high resolutions while losing relatively little detail.

Keyboard and trackpad

The biggest weak point of the Schenker Vision 16 Pro 2023 – which isn’t really a weak point – is the keyboard. The manufacturer has installed a full-size chiclet keyboard, i.e. including the number pad, which has a smaller Enter key but full-size arrow keys.

The keyboard is of a high standard in terms of typing and writing feel. It’s not bad by any means, but we’ve seen better. What I really like, however, is that Schenker makes full use of the space in the chassis and leaves a pleasant amount of space between the keys despite the full-size layout.

The keyboard also has dimmable white key illumination, which can be completely deactivated if desired. The Microsoft Precision glass touchpad is also pleasantly generous, offering plenty of space at 154 mm x 100 mm and is pleasantly smooth to use.

Schenker Vision 16 Pro 2023 test: design and workmanship

A kind of wolf in sheep’s clothing awaits you with the inconspicuous Schenker Vision 16 Pro 2023, which hides a lot of performance under its simple hood. But let’s start with the design first.

The ultrabook has a discreet, matt black (or alternatively silver) magnesium chassis with a shiny manufacturer’s logo on the display lid. A good choice, as fingerprints on the casing are virtually invisible.

With a height of around 17 millimeters when closed, the laptop underpins its position in the ultrabook segment and weighs just under 1.6 kilograms despite its powerful hardware.

The focus here is clearly on flexibility. The very compact and lightweight power supply unit also contributes to this, providing a full 180 watts of power despite its dimensions of 120 mm x 20 mm and a weight of 313 grams.

Schenker only places the fan outlets on the underside of the case and the lack of RGB lighting also underlines the discreet, office-ready approach. Four generous, rubberized feet ensure a secure hold on tables and other surfaces, while the case can be opened quickly and easily using a total of nine Phillips screws.

The maintenance options of the Schenker Vision 16 Pro 2023 are unusually good for an ultrabook. The tidy interior can be equipped or upgraded with RAM in two SO-DIMMs and two M.2 2280 SSDs.

The build quality is also very good. The notebook appears robust and of high quality, only the thin and light display lid bounces visibly. However, this is not really annoying.

The cooler design is exactly the same as the XLR8 RTX 4060 Ti we previously reviewed – in fact, the dimensions of the card, at 305 x 119 x 40mm, is the exact same as the 4060 Ti. Given that the cooler already had massive thermal headroom cooling the 160W card, we expect the 200W TGP to not be an issue for this 2-slot, triple-fan GPU.

GPU Top

The top side is also largely similar, with the 8-pin connector sitting at the middle of the card’s length. The PCB only occupies half the card’s length, leaving the other half for flow-through cooling.

GPU Bottom

A very clean looking bottom-end, although I do wish the fan headers from the top side are moved over to this side so cables can be obscured from plain view.

GPU Backplate

No surprises here, still: the MLCCs (capacitors behind the GPU die) are hidden behind the backplate, and a huge cutout provides flow-through cooling for the third fan to work with.

I/O Layout

Much like all NVIDIA RTX 40 GPUs so far, you’re looking at three DisplayPort 1.4 outputs and a single HDMI 2.1 output capable of delivering high refresh rate 4K resolutions for those displays that can handle it. The perforations are solely for looks and serves no purpose for cooling.

RGB Lighting

This card provides two RGB zones, the first at the front in the “X” pattern, and the second one located at the top illuminating the “XLR8” logo. Both are configurable in the VelocityX VERTO app as needed.

As always with Schenker, the Schenker Vision 16 Pro 2023 can also be configured extensively at bestware. Our test model with this configuration has a price tag of around 2,600 euros. For this, the manufacturer has put together an absolutely coherent overall package.

On the CPU side, the Intel Core i7-13700H is used, which combines 14 cores with 20 threads and clock speeds of up to 5,000 MHz. The ultrabook uses the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 GPU with 8 GB VRAM and a TGP of 95 watts.

32 GB DDR4 RAM in dual-channel mode is installed, but you can theoretically pre-configure 64 GB RAM at the factory. For the SSD, our test model relies on the fast PCIe 4.0 solution Samsung 990 Pro with 1 TB of storage space, although up to 4 terabytes are also possible here.

The equipment is rounded off by an Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX201 module with Bluetooth 5.2 and a Windows Hello-compatible webcam with Full HD quality. The stereo speakers achieve an excellent maximum volume and a convincing sound. The integrated microphone with noise suppression is fine.

The webcam has Full HD resolution and allows login via Windows Hello.

The connections of the Schenker Vision 16 Pro 2023

Despite the very compact chassis, the Schenker Vision 16 Pro 2023 comes with a whole range of modern connections.

On the left side, we find a USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 and a USB-C Gen 2×1 port in addition to the Kensington lock. The latter supports image output via DisplayPort 1.4a, but is not able to provide power via PowerDelivery.

There is also a full-size SD card reader and a combined 3.5 mm jack connection. Unfortunately, the card reader only achieves average speeds, but it’s still nice to have.

On the right is the power port, one HDMI 2.0b, one USB-A 3.2 Gen 1, as well as a Thunderbolt 4 port with DisplayPort and PowerDelivery function, which can be used to charge the Ultrabook with up to 100 watts.

Firstly, the Core i7 13700HX boasts a 4.8% lead over the Core i7 13700H, with scores of 1959 and 1867, respectively. This performance differential indicates the Core i7 13700HX’s potential for swift and efficient execution of single-core tasks.

In multi-core performance, the Core i7 13700HX takes a substantial 32.5% lead, achieving scores of 22777 compared to the Core i7 13700H’s 16402. This advantage highlights the Core i7 13700HX’s efficiency in managing demanding workloads.

Interestingly, the GeForce RTX 4070 bucks the trend we’ve seen with the GeForce RTX 40 Series so far in that it’s not a case of more and more. The GeForce RTX 3070 is the Ampere generation’s equivalent GPU, and it features the same number of CUDA Cores, RT Cores, and overall Tensor Cores as the new RTX 4070. A cause for alarm? Not really, as the synthetic and in-game benchmarks paint the generational leap picture you’d expect.

Clock speeds differ, with the Boost Clock speed of the RTX 4070, 2475 MHz, representing a 43% increase over the RTX 3070’s 1725 MHz. Likewise, the increase in memory to 12GB of GDDR6X is a 50% increase in overall capacity, even though the memory interface has been stripped back to a 192-bit bus.

Compared to the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti, which was released in January — and was initially meant to be the GeForce RTX 4080 12GB — the RTX 4070’s baseline stats are roughly cut back by around 23%. That said, the 200W power rating is approximately 30% less than the RTX 4070 Ti’s 285W and less than the RTX 3070’s. The GeForce RTX 4070 is efficient and then some, which makes the performance numbers below even more impressive.

It’s also worth noting that the above specs do not capture all the hardware that makes up the GeForce RTX 4070, as it also includes the new AI Optical Acceleration technology not present in the GeForce RTX 30 Series. And this is what makes DLSS 3 possible — and the RTX 4070’s performance (especially in 1440p) to punch well above its weight class. The GeForce RTX 4070 significantly increases L2 Cache Size compared to the RTX 3070, with 36.8 MB.
