If you’re going to pack two OLED displays into a laptop, then they both better excel. And certainly, out of the box, they both look excellent, achieving sufficient brightness, excellent colors, and the usual OLED inky blacks. Both displays are sharp at 2.8K (2,880 x 1,800) resolutions, and both run at just 60Hz.
According to my colorimeter, the displays are almost identical in their objective performance. They’re typical examples of OLED-class machines. No matter which display you use, you’ll get the same superior experience. Both displays are touch-enabled, and they both support Lenovo’s active pen with hover support.

There is a lot of competition in the 14-inch premium Ultrabook range, which is why Lenovo coming out ahead of so many of them makes it a very unique option for 2022 shoppers. But not many of those laptops are convertible with a 360-hinge, which is the differentiator here.
HP’s offers a very similar feature list to the Yoga 9i, including an OLED touch display, included pen and sleeve, quad-speakers, and just an overall excellent user experience, which is why it was one of our top laptops of 2021. However, at the time of this review, the 2021 model is still using an 11th Gen Intel CPU, and the 12th Gen is a game-changer worth getting. HP is likely to refresh the Spectre x360 14 very soon, nevertheless, which is worth watching.
If you like the Spectre x360 14 and Yoga 9i but want something more significant with more power, HP has the very good , which is a multi-media delight. The only downside is the 11th Gen Intel CPU, and performance, while powerful, is not exceptional for the size.
A similar story applies to the otherwise excellent Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 9310, which also has a convertible form factor, OLED display options, and Dell’s award-winning InfinityEdge 16:10 display. Like the Spectre, the XPS 13 2-in-1 only runs Intel 11th Gen, and Dell has discontinued that specific model.
Beyond those two, you begin to move into tablet 2-in-1s like the excellent , , or regular clamshell laptops like , , and the new . Only the XPS 13 Plus has Intel 12th Gen and a completely new design.
Interestingly, if you like the Yoga 9i but don’t need a convertible laptop, Lenovo has the . It heavily borrows from the Yoga 9i’s design, offers up to 4K OLED, and has quad speakers but bumps the GPU up to .

Design is where the Yoga Book 9i really shines, honestly.
The dual 13.3-inch OLED displays look amazing, thanks to their 2.8K, 16:10, DCI-P3 100% panels, which can get as bright as 400 nits. The soundbar in the middle hinge also puts out some seriously respectable audio. And, as always, Lenovo has incorporated a physical privacy shutter into its webcam, which is still something Lenovo’s competitors are catching up on even in 2023.

The origami stand on the device is a much more stable solution to the kickstand problems of a lot of other devices like this. Kickstands built into a lot of foldables like Lenovo’s own X1 Fold were stable in a very limited range, and were easy to knock down with a decent gust of wind.
Thanks to the trifold base providing a much more stable platform for the laptop displays to rest upon, the Yoga Book 9i feels much more sturdy than anything similar we’ve tried.
When in waterfall mode, notably, there is some wobble if you’re tapping on the top display as opposed to the bottom, but in a lot of ways, that’s not unexpected. Physics comes for us all in the end, and torque forces are what they are. It’s not too onerous though, but we’d definitely recommend doing your touch work on the bottom display.

Portrait mode is more forgiving in that regard, and for coders out there, this is the laptop you’ve been dreaming of. And us writers, frankly. Or anyone who works extensively with two displays on a desktop, but has to settle for separate desktops on a laptop or swapping out windows when writing up a story while checking your notes.
The keyboard also attaches to the bottom display when in clamshell mode, with the extra space serving as either a space for widgets or an edge-to-edge track pad with software emulated «buttons» that provide haptic feedback to simulate a real one. We have to say the effect is quite convincing.
If you want to forgo the physical keyboard, there is a virtual one as well that also provides haptic response to simulate real keys, and it can definitely work in a pinch.

Lenovo Yoga 9i: Battery life
The Lenovo Yoga 9i has a 75 watt-hour battery which powered the laptop for 10 hours and 39 minutes in our standard battery test, which loops a 4K file of the short film Tears of Steel. This is a respectable result for a 2-in-1 laptop. It can handle a full day of light to moderate use (like writing in Microsoft Word or browsing the web).

The Yoga 9i’s battery life is in line with the alternatives. It’s outperformed by the Samsung Galaxy Book 3 Pro 360, which has a larger screen, but squeezes out a win against the Microsoft Surface Laptop 5. The Yoga 9i also defeats the Asus Zenbook Pro 14 Duo OLED.

There’s only one configuration of the Yoga Book 9i currently shipping, a $2,000 version from Best Buy with a Core i7-1355U, 16GB of RAM, a 1TB SSD, and two 13.3-inc 2.8K OLED panels. That would be expensive for a premium 13-inch laptop, but you’re obviously paying more for the extra display.
Performance

The Yoga Book 9i uses the Intel Core i7-1355U, a low-power CPU running at 15 watts. It’s a 10-core (two Performance at 5.0 GHz and eight Efficient at 3.7GHz) chip with 12 threads that’s aimed at thin and light laptops and productivity users. We’ve only reviewed a couple of laptops with this processor, and both provide similar performance, although the Lenovo jumps slightly ahead of the Asus ZenBook S 13 OLED in performance mode.
As we can see from the comparison group, the Yoga Book 9i provides sufficient performance for demanding productivity users, but it won’t please creators. The Intel Iris Xe integrated graphics provided average performance, so it’s not a gaming machine. But in my testing, it handled the dual displays with no issues and most users will find its performance more than acceptable.

The Yoga Book 9i packs in 80 watt-hours of battery capacity, which is a lot for a 13-inch laptop. That is, it’s a lot when you have just one display to power. But with two power-hungry OLED panels to feed, the laptop will use all the power it can get.
In our suite of battery tests, the laptop provided less than average performance and less than the Zenbook S 13 OLED. Clearly, the second display is taking its toll. Translated into real-world use, you’ll likely need your charger to make it through a full day’s work.

Design
The Lenovo Yoga Book 9i features a thin and lightweight aluminum chassis that measures just 0.60 inches thick and weighs 2.2 pounds. Despite its slim profile, the aluminum body feels sturdy and durable.
The minimalist design gives the Yoga Book 9i a sleek, premium look. The aluminum exterior comes in two color options – Cloud Grey and Bronze. Both color variants have a uniform and professional aesthetic.
At less than half an inch thick and just over 2 pounds, the Yoga Book 9i is highly portable. You can easily slip it into a bag or backpack and carry it around all day without any noticeable bulk or weight. The lightweight build makes this 2-in-1 well-suited for people who are frequently on-the-go.
The thin chassis does not compromise on ports and connectivity. The sides still house USB-C, USB-A and a headphone jack. So you can easily connect peripherals without needing any dongles or adapters.
Overall, the aluminum body of the Yoga Book 9i provides an optimal blend of portability, durability and aesthetics without sacrificing functionality. The slim and lightweight design is a major highlight of this premium 2-in-1 from Lenovo.
Bravo 9i, going laptop
Attaching the wireless keyboard to the bottom makes the Yoga Book 9i a semi-functional laptop.
Thankfully, there’s an alternative option for those who need to use the Book 9i on their lap but don’t want to suffer through typing on the digital keyboard. The Bluetooth keyboard that comes with the Book 9i attaches magnetically to the lower display, which means you can have an actual, physical keyboard that’s quite pleasant to type on alongside the digital trackpad.
Interestingly, you can also put the keyboard on the lower half of the display where the trackpad would be and the Book 9i will fill the upper half with widgets instead, like the Asus Zenbook Pro Duo. But for some bizarre reason, you can’t change the widget options, so you’re stuck with the two pre-selected options of your Outlook calendar and a news widget. I ultimately disabled this option entirely because I don’t use Outlook, so the calendar widget was just empty, while the news widget exclusively surfaced tabloid junk.
Lenovo’s software does let you switch to display the ‘focus window’ in that bar instead, but when I enabled that option, it didn’t do anything when I attached the keyboard. I’ll have more about the Lenovo software below, but suffice it to say this was far from the only bug I encountered.
You can also mount the keyboard on the lower half of the screen, sacrificing the touchpad for a useless widget dashboard.
Getting back to the keyboard, attaching it to the screen makes for an almost laptop-like experience, but it’s far from ideal. For one, the magnets are just strong enough to keep the keyboard attached, but not strong enough to prevent it from sliding around. I often had to pause typing to reposition the keyboard. I also had an issue with windows and apps getting lost under the keyboard. Attaching the keyboard should move all my windows from the lower display to the upper display, but in practice, that rarely happened.
Instead, the Yoga Book 9i just covers the bottom display with an overlay for the touchpad, with my windows hiding under the overlay. I could even move the cursor down to the second display since, as far as Windows was concerned, the second display was still there even though Lenovo’s software had converted it into a trackpad. I could even slide the physical keyboard up a little and see my apps beneath it.
The digital touchpad occasionally stopped registering inputs, seemingly due to an overbearing accidental touch rejection system that kicked in when I was typing but didn’t always turn off when I stopped.
You can call up a virtual touchpad anywhere on the two screens.
Speaking of digital touchpads, if you don’t need a keyboard, you can call up a small trackpad just by tapping anywhere with three fingers. While this gesture was very convenient, and the trackpad worked well, I didn’t like covering up some of my apps with it and generally preferred just using a mouse.
Generally, most of these ended up being minor annoyances when using the laptop and weren’t dealbreakers in my eyes. The first time I lost my cursor under the keyboard was a little concerning, but once I knew that could happen, it became just another frustration of using the Yoga Book 9i like a typical laptop. And the thing is, I didn’t often need the Yoga Book 9i to be a typical laptop, but when I did, it became really difficult to be productive because I had to constantly pause and troubleshoot. And don’t even get ey started on trying to use this contraption while riding the GO train into the office. After a while, I started reaching for an actual laptop whenever I needed to work for an extended period of time away from my desk.
Lenovo Yoga Book 9i: Early verdict

The Lenovo Yoga Book 9i is likely to be a productivity workhorse without being a powerhouse. If you’re good with that, then this is going to be a great laptop for you, but otherwise, you will have to lookk elsewhere for higher performance.
The design, however, is definitely innovative, and it’s a far better solution to the dual screen needs of a lot of users than a foldable laptop will ever likely be, so if you’re a multitasker who’s tired of not being able to switch between screens with ease the way you are on a desktop (or at least with external monitors), then your laptop is coming. Just be prepared to pay the premium for that additional screen real estate.

Lenovo does a good job of surfacing all of the gestures, taps and swipes you need to know to unlock different features on the Yoga Book 9i through random alerts and the User Center app. But even after using it for several weeks now, I feel like I still don’t know them all or that there are more efficient ways of doing things.
I think that feeling’s just a byproduct of using a device that’s so fundamentally different than any laptop I’ve ever used. When I’m using a physical keyboard and mouse, I don’t feel the same way. And maybe that’s the point — with a device like the Yoga Book 9i and its myriad of options for using it, you can find a workflow that makes the most sense to you and take full advantage of it.

For me, typing on the full-sized digital keyboard with a virtual trackpad below feels like a ton of work. The keyboard isn’t as precise, and there’s a huge learning curve I still haven’t reached the top of. However, putting the Bluetooth keyboard on top of the bottom display and using the virtual trackpad beneath it has been a workflow that I’ve grown fond of. The trackpad is good enough for basic tasks, and for more advanced stuff I can always use the included Bluetooth mouse.
Hopefully, Lenovo is able to collect enough data about how people are actually using the Yoga Book 9i in the real world and refine all of the different input and interaction methods either via a future software update or in future iterations of this design.

Productivity Performance on the Lenovo Yoga Book 9i
Lenovo’s dual-screen PC is running off of an Intel Core i7-1355U, 16GB of LPDDR5X-6400, and a 512GB PCIe Gen 4 SSD.
For simple tasks, like web browsing, writing and editing documents and spreadsheets and even basic coding, this is more than enough. If you want slightly higher clocks, Lenovo uses Intel’s P-series processors in the regular Yoga 9i.

On Geekbench 5, the Yoga Book 9i notched a single-core score of 1,813 and a multi-core score of 7,765. That’s faster than the other foldable on this list, the single-screened Asus Zenbook Fold 17 OLED, which uses last year’s Intel Core i7-1250U. On single-core, it was close to the Lenovo Yoga 9i (Intel Core i7-1360P) at 1,827 points, but the regular Yoga 9i’s multi-core score of 9,954 was the highest on the list. The MacBook Air‘s M2 chip also beat out the Yoga Book 9i in both single-core and multi-core scores (1,932/8.919).
Lenovo’s SSD in the Yoga Book 9i transferred 25GB of files at a a rate of 1,296.15 MBps, beaten only by its other SSD (in the regular 9i) at 1,669.29 MBps.
The Yoga Book 9i was the fastest in the pool on Handbrake, transcoding a 4K video to 1080p in 9 minutes and 19 seconds. The MacBook Air left the rest of the crowd in the dust at 7:52, and the P-Series Yoga 9i was actually slightly slower here at 9:45.
To push the Yoga Book 9i to its limits, we ran our stress test, looping Cinebench R23 for 20 runs. The laptop started with a score of 8,099.95 and then, as the computer heated up, steadied out in the mid-7,000’s. Notably, at run 16, there was a sharp drop to 6,362.64 before recovering, suggesting some throttling.
The Intel Core i7-1355U’s two performance cores ran at an average of 3.01 GHz during the stress test, while the eight efficiency cores averaged 2.25 GHz. The CPU package’s average temperature was 75.79 degrees Celsius (168.42 degrees Fahrenheit).
