Productivity Performance on the Alienware m18 R1
With a Core i9-13980HX processor and GeForce RTX 4090 at the helm, along with 32GB of DDR5 memory and a 1TB SSD, our Alienware m18 R1 configuration was no slouch in our productivity benchmark suite.
In the synthetic CPU benchmark, Geekbench 5, this gaming laptop group is closely clustered in both the single-core and multi-core scoring. The MSI Raider GE78 HX took top honors in the single-core benchmark (2,121), while the m18 R1 landed first place in the multi-core benchmark (21,005).

The file transfer test, which involves copying 25GB of files, saw the ROG Zephyrus 16 (1,947.37 MBps) edge out the second-place ROG Strix Scar 18 (1,885.81 MBps). The Raider GE78 HX came in third place at 1,521.53 MBps, while the m18 R1 pulled up the rear at 1,521.53 MBps.
The Handbrake test again saw a neck-and-neck race between the m18 R1, ROG Strix Scar 18 and ROG Zephyrus Duo 16. The m18 R1 secured first place with a time of two minutes and 39 seconds, while the Raider GE78 HX came in last place at four minutes and eight seconds.

As you’d expect, Dell has fitted the Alienware m18 with the greatest specs possible, with up to an Intel Core 13th Generation Intel Core i9-13980HX processor, as well as Nvidia’s latest RTX 4000 GPU range which tops out at the almighty RTX 4090. There will also be AMD-flavoured GPU options, although we’re getting details on those at a later date.
Of course, it’s never as simple as just slapping the best components when designing a gaming laptop, as Alienware has also made sure to improve the thermal to maximise performance. New Quad fans with ultra-thin fan blades supposedly increase airflow by 25%, while the vapour chamber now covers both the CPU and GPU.

Alienware suggests that advancements to the cooling enables them to raise the total system power to 250W, allowing the new cutting-edge components (such as the 150W RTX 4090) to reach their full potential.
I haven’t been able to test performance myself since this was just a quick hands-on event, but all signs indicate that it’s going to be faster than any laptop from 2022 or prior.
There’s no need to be worried about storage either, with Dell offering up to a whopping 9TB configuration. That’s overkill for the vast majority of gamers, no matter how many games you gobbled up in the Steam sale – but it’s still great to have the option.
First Impressions
The most striking element of the Alienware m18 is undoubtedly the new 18-inch screen, adding extra screen space for a more immersive gaming experience. But it’s the introduction of all-new CPU and GPU options that will make the biggest impact.
It’s too soon to know what kind of performance the Alienware m18 will be capable of, but it’s inevitable that it will be among the most powerful portables in 2023. I can’t wait to get this gaming monster up and running.

Ventilation has improved by leaps and bounds with the Alienware m18, fixing every issue from the previous Alienware x15 R2 and making the much thicker design completely understandable. It features a quad-fan design that circulates and expels from several vents across seven heat pipes, along with improved thermal paste quality for both the CPU and GPU. The trade-off is a laptop that sounds almost like a jet engine, but if you’re passionate about performance and especially overclocking, then it’s more than worth it.
Speaking of performance, the Alienware m18 is currently king on the GPU front. It beats out the other desktop replacements that we’ve tested so far, including the MSI GT77 Titan, which is way more expensive for similar specs. And it’s not only benchmarking that it reigns over, as those scores translate to higher frame rates as well. There’s not a single game, whether Cyberpunk 2077 or Dirt 5, in which this laptop scored under 100fps on average, even on maxed-out settings. And yes, even when ray tracing is enabled.

Keep in mind that these are results taken straight from a setup right out of the box, with the only change being that I set it to the generic Performance mode in Windows 11. The updated and redesigned Alienware Command Center software is even easier to use now thanks to a complete UI overhaul, making overclocking a breeze and performance results skyrocket. Since I had the old version equipped before I updated, I could see the difference, and it’s leagues better than below.
When it comes to CPU results, it’s not as consistent with some scores being higher than the competition and others much lower, the latter of which happened most often against the Lenovo Legion Pro 7i. In general, it follows the same current-gen trend of the CPU performance potential being throttled by the GPU, as well as occasionally slowdown and webpage or video loading issues. Despite that, I was able to use it as a productivity machine for a full day of work without much issue.

Немалая часть корпуса выполнена из пластика, достаточно плотного, используется и алюминий. Фирменный дизайн просматривается в каждой мелочи.
Формы причудливы, банальных скругленных углов здесь нет, зато есть сразу несколько вариантов головы пришельца, расположенных в различных частях устройства.
Передняя грань обновлённой модели выглядит очень заурядно, теперь это просто полоска пластика с отверстиями для динамиков, а раньше она имела узнаваемый дизайн.
Почти все, что можно, подсвечивается разнообразными цветами, управлять этим процессом можно через специальную программу пакета Alien Center.
Всё необходимое предустановлено вместе с операционной системой. Качество сборки достойно похвалы, но вот дизайн в целом спорный и понравится далеко не всем.
Новый дизайн “инопланетного изделия” также смотрится очень красиво и эффектно. Высота корпуса составляет 57 мм, ширина 457 мм, вес – 5,5 кг (без блока питания). Так что вряд ли вы сможете носить эту модель всегда с собой. Перед нами замена настольного ПК в чистом виде. Но если нужно его можно брать с собой, это все же лэптоп.
Впрочем, носить DELL Alienware 18 на вечеринки намного легче, чем таскать с собой настольный пк с дисплеем и клавиатурой.
Вполне понятно, что этот ПК не нацелен на мобильность, но для путешествий лучше подходит ультрабук или планшет, а не этот игровой компьютер.

ALIENWARE M18 review: FEATURES

As you might expect, this laptop has plenty of features other than the basics, including a glowing keyboard and body, as well as very expandable storage.
My review unit came with the clicky CherryMX keyboard, which has a lovely, clicky feel: every key press is accompanied by an excellent clack that lets you know the key has been pressed. It is a bit noisy, though: those who share your office or home can tell how your game is going by how furiously you are bashing away at it.
The keyboard also has individual RGB LEDs under each key which can be individually controlled through the Alienware AlienFX app, which allows you to set a particular colour scheme or pattern for each game or app for the keys, the alien head, and the LEDs on the back of the laptop body. This app also allows you to create key bindings associated with each game, so you can attach macros to function keys or the like.
Above the keyboard is a row of speakers that produces clear, bright sound with plenty of volume. The stereo separation is good: I was able to figure out where the bad guys were coming from and if they were behind me.
My review unit came with a 1TB SSD drive, but this laptop can be outfitted with up to 9TB of storage because it has four spots for SSD drives: two long M.2 slots and two additional shorter M.2 slots. The larger slots can hold drives up to 4TB in size, while the smaller ones are limited to 512GB drives for a maximum of 9TB of space. This combination of up to four drives also allows you to create RAID setups for speed or redundancy: a feature on only a few laptops. Dell only offers options up to 8TB direct from the factory, but all slots are easily accessible if you want to upgrade. The M18 also supports up to 64GB of DDR5 RAM in two memory slots. That is expensive, though.

Во время разгона температура процессора поднялась до предела прочности — 99 градусов по Цельсию . Это привело к ограничению тактовой частоты до 4,1 ГГц .

Introduction
Before 2023, the biggest laptop you’d likely be able to find had a 17-inch screen, allowing for plenty of screen space for Netflix binges, massive spreadsheets and – most importantly – immersive gaming.
But now Dell’s gaming brand Alienware wants to go one step further by re-introducing an even larger 18-inch panel. This seems to be a trend that several laptop manufacturers are embracing during CES 2023, and when viewing the Alienware m18 in person, I can see why.
You may only be adding an extra inch to the screen, but it really makes a difference, resulting in a more absorbing and immersive experience.
What’s more, Alienware hasn’t needed to make the laptop larger to achieve this, with the Alienware m18 apparently featuring the exact same peak thickness as its 17-inch predecessor, the Alienware m17 laptop. Instead, Alienware has simply slimmed down the screen bezel to improve the screen-to-body ratio.
I was invited over to New York by Dell in late 2022 to go hands-on with the new Alienware m18 laptop. Here are my first impressions.

Before getting my hands on the Alienware M18, the Asus ROG Strix Scar 18 was the most powerful gaming laptop I had tested. That still stands, but the M18 has come closest to knocking it off its podium. With blazingly fast benchmarks that beat the Scar in a couple of areas, though do lag slightly behind in the majority of tests, the M18 is an absolute powerhouse. I saw three figure framerates across all tests in the highest of graphics settings, which we’ve come to take for granted across 18-inch RTX 40-Series devices these days. However, even trickier ray tracing efforts were met with incredible power. DLSS 3 manages to push everything into a new dimension here, with the component power and cooling tech to keep it all running smoothly as well.
The M18 beat the Scar 18 in Time Spy score and in-game benchmarking across Returnal and Total War: Three Kingdoms, two more demanding titles that the Scar 18 couldn’t quite keep up with. While you will get a more well-rounded power level with the Scar 18, then, there are some spikes to the M18’s performance that keep it in the fight.
This is the kind of performance we expect from a machine making a bid to take over from a full desktop PC. You’ll be paying for those higher framerates in a far more expensive configuration, but if you’re after new generation power in an all-in-one machine there’s certainly nothing to hold you back here.

How I tested the Alienware m18
- I tested the Alienware m18 for several weeks

First, I tested the general weight and portability of the Alienware m18 by carrying it around in a laptop bag for a day. After I set it up, I ran several CPU and GPU benchmarks to thoroughly test out the graphics card’s performance and how much it affected processing performance. Finally, I used a variety of programs and applications to test out both battery life and general performance during work-like conditions, as well as gaming benchmarks to test the RTX 4090 GPU.
The Alienware m18 is a desktop replacement for gaming, meaning it’s meant to be used for hardcore gaming sessions. I made sure to thoroughly test out this laptop in that regard, to make sure it reached certain levels of performance.
I’ve tested plenty of gaming PCs and laptops, making me more than qualified to understand benchmark test results and how to properly stress test machines to see how well they perform as a work machine.

ALIENWARE M18 review: DESIGN

The main thing that strikes you about the M18 is the weight of it. Especially if you drop it (don’t do that!): weighing a hefty 4kg (8.8lbs), you’ll know if it lands on your foot. It is large as well, measuring 410mm wide and 320mm deep. It is a touch under an 25mm thick, though, so it is still easy to grasp and carry for short distances.
A brick-sized 330W power adapter powers the M18. This adds another 1.4 kg (3.2 lbs) to the weight you have to carry around, so don’t forget that you’ll be lugging around 5.4 kg in total when choosing a laptop bag. You’ll need to bring it however: the M18 can’t be charged by a USB-C power adapter or other power sources.
The brains of the M18 is the Intel Core i9-13980HX, the top-of-the-line 13th Gen mobile processor with 24 cores, eight of which are the fastest power variants that run at 5.8GHz, while the rest are the slower (4GHz) efficiency cores that take less power. That’s the fastest laptop processor that Intel currently offers.
This processor outputs a lot of heat when working hard, up to a maximum of 155 Watts. Combine that with the 45 Watts that the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 GPU can output, and things get kind of toasty. The M18 deals with this through a large vapour chamber, seven heat pipes that transfer the heat, and four large fans that suck air from under the laptop body and over the fins on the heat pipes. These vent the hotter air out of the sides and back of the laptop.
All that transfers the heat effectively, but not without a lot of noise. This is a quiet whoosh in normal use, but start up a game, and it rises to the sound of an angry lawnmower, a noise that continues until after you quit the game and things cool down. I found this quite distracting, although the large speakers alongside the keyboard do an excellent job of drowning it out with more noise.
The laptop has the usual Alienware styling, with the glowing alien head on the back of the lid and above the keyboard. There are plenty of ports on offer: two USB 3.2 and a 2.5-gigabit Ethernet on the left side and a USB-C USB 3.2 Gen 1 port on the right. The rest are on the back, with the big power input, two Thunderbolt 4 ports, one Type-A USB 3.2 Gen 2, an HDMI 2.1, Mini Display Port, and an SD card slot. That means there are plenty of places to plug in monitors, external keyboards, hard drives, and anything else you need to reach gaming nirvana. For wireless connections, the M18 offers Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3 connections, both of the latest versions of the wireless standards.
