Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 review: Ports and features

There is a lot to love about the Surface Laptop 5, particularly its OS which looks great and is oh-so-simple to navigate. There’s no fingerprint sensor on the keyboard but Windows Hello facial recognition is just wonderfully efficient, despite its low-quality 720p webcam which is a little grainy in video meetings.

Port-wise, Microsoft took a step forward, only to take two steps back. We finally see the Thunderbolt 4 make its way to the Surface Laptop, but it serves as the only USB-C port. There’s also a distinct lack of other connection options; all you have is a USB-A and a headphone jack.

There’s no cubbyhole for a stylus either. As mentioned above, we, unfortunately, didn’t receive a pen with our review unit, so we can’t say how good or bad that is, though the touchscreen is very responsive and silky smooth. Without a stylus, there are few reasons on offer to actually use the touchscreen which is possibly why MacBooks never have them.

Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 review: price and specs

The Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 is good device that can handle most tasks, but looks just like previous models (Image credit: Future)

Overall Microsoft’s new laptop looks to be reasonably priced and features a good balance of features. The Intels 12th gen processors offer solid power and speed, but the basic build will need to be developed and cost more if you want to get serious and use this laptop for more than everyday tasks. It means while the initial pricing below looks good, you’ll need to factor in a little more money to really get a laptop that’s worthwhile.

The Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 starts at $899 / £999 for the 13.5in version with an Intel i5 processor, 8GB RAM and a 256GB SSD, but naturally prices begin to increase once you go up to Intel i7 build – $1,699 £1,699 – or larger the 15-inch model that begins at $1,199 / £1,299 for an Intel i7 version with 8GB RAM and a 256GB SSD. The 15 inch model tops out at $2,099 / £2,399 for an Intel i7 powered black metal finished laptop with 32GB RAM and 1TB SSD.

Considering the price, the Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 is in the same category has an Apple MacBook Pro (2021). Or you could drop down to an Apple MacBook Air (2022) or take a look at our guide to the best HP laptops for an alternative, well-specced Windows 11 laptop.

On the, ahem, surface, the Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 is a little overpriced for the spec, and there are some good alternatives on the market. But below I take a deeper look at the new Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 and reveal why this laptop impresses, if money isn’t an issue.

Microsoft Surface Laptop 5: Performance

  • Sound quality is top-tier
  • Great new features that utilize the touchscreen
  • Terrible performance all around

Performance on the Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 is a mixture of the good, the bad, and the ugly. Let’s deal with the good first — namely the expanded accessibility options and productivity features.

First is the Focus function, which locks out notifications for a certain period of time so you can focus on productivity. Another addition is Snap, which allows you to divide your screen into various areas, then place windows into those sections for easy multitasking.

File explorer is another quality-of-life change in which you can open multiple tabs of computer file folders in the same window. The Start menu itself also houses some quality-of-life changes, including being able to organize apps within folders, as well as scroll through recommended apps.

You can also activate a host of accessibility options within Windows 11. This has the benefit of automatically working across 20,000-plus apps, avoiding the need for you to make changes within individual programs.

Sound quality is also excellent — in fact, this is one of the best non-gaming laptops we’ve ever heard. Music is clear enough that you can hear every instrument and voice in a single track, yet loud enough to blast said song from the rooftops. It’s everything you could ever want from a laptop’s sound system.

Finally in terms of positives, the touchscreen is impressively responsive, especially when using a stylus. Too bad said stylus isn’t included out of the box but instead is an add-on.

Benchmarks

Here’s how the Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 performed in our suite of benchmark tests:

3DMark: Night Raid: 16,871; Fire Strike: 4763; Time Spy: 1793Cinebench R23 Multi-core: 8499 pointsGeekBench 5: 1674 (single-core); 8709 (multi-core)Battery Life (Web Surfing): 9 hours and 50 minutesBattery Life (TechRadar movie test): 7 hours and 38 minutesCivilization VI (1080p, Ultra): 42 fps; (1080p, Low): 55 fps

However, both the bad and ugly rear their ugly heads once you delve into the Surface Laptop 5’s performance. While the benchmark testing places it squarely at its market average, actually using the laptop is its own issue.

In the first screenshot below, you can see how many processes are running in the background, which is a staggering 43. That’s after we installed all current Windows 11 updates as well as the benchmark programs.

Here’s the second screenshot, which shows how many programs are running in the background, which is an unbelievable 57. And this is just after we fully wiped the PC, without any updates or program installations.

As you can imagine, this much going on in the background has a profound effect on how well the Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 runs. We could not run PC Mark 10 in the slightest, for instance. No matter how many times we uninstalled, reinstalled, and reset the laptop, it would instantly crash the moment we tried to do anything. And at one point it even crashed Geekbench.

Keep in mind this is a laptop with a Core i7, 16GB RAM, and 512GB SSD of storage. And it’s perplexing, because Chrome and other browsers ran without crashing, even when displaying tabs full of YouTube videos. However, we did notice some slowdown when running more taxing productivity tasks.

For the price, these performance issues are absolutely unacceptable.

Много упущенных возможностей

В мире технологий не двигаться вперед — это то же самое, что полностью стоять на месте. Но это риск, на который Microsoft решила пойти с Surface Laptop 5.

“Straight out of the box, the build quality of the Surface Laptop 5 is immediately impressive.”

The 2496 x 1664 resolution, while a little unconventional, ensures all content viewed is sharp and crisp and looks incredible. The display also gets extremely bright, making use outdoors easy to do and also gets dim enough to be easy on the eyes while in a darker room. The addition of 10-point multitouch support, while useful in some circumstances wasn’t something I found myself using too much only because I do not enjoy seeing fingerprints on my display.

The speakers on the Surface Laptop 5 reminded me of an Apple MacBook in terms of their sound. They were clear and sounded adequately good for a laptop as thin as this form factor. While I do wish the bass tones were a little deeper and fuller, the mids and high tones were full and rich, delivering a decent listening experience when listening to both videos and music. The speakers also got a lot louder than I had expected them to, which was a pleasant surprise for me.

Battery life was certainly an area that Microsoft has nailed with their Surface Laptop 5. I was easily able to get a full day out of a single charge when doing lighter tasks such as typing out documents, listening to music or podcasts and even watching movies. While more demanding tasks obviously drained the battery much faster, that’s not uncommon for any portable device. I have no problem recommending the Surface Laptop 5 to office workers who need a laptop with a large screen but also need as much battery life as they can get.

Performance

The Surface Laptop 5 is powered by a Core i5 or i7 processor, depending on the configuration, so the processing power should be impressive. Because it’s designed to be a productivity machine, it should be capable of handling everything from spreadsheets to conference calls to video streaming and more.

It also has LPDDR5 RAM support, which is quite impressive. The standard Intel Iris Xe Graphics GPU is less so, so there is no discrete GPU for the Laptop 5. In general, it is said to be 50% more powerful than the Laptop 4, with excellent sound quality thanks to its front-facing studio mics.

According to Microsoft, the battery life of the Laptop 5 is even better than that of the Laptop 4, with the former lasting 18 hours. Of course, more testing is required to confirm this claim, but based on previous models, it is most likely correct. We’ll update this review with a more detailed look at what the Laptop 5 is capable of handling once we get our hands on a review version and run the full suite of benchmark tests.

Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 graphics

The Surface Laptop 5 comes with integrated Intel Iris Xe graphics. Consequently, this Microsoft laptop is far from being a gaming rig, but for grins and giggles, we ran the Sid Meier’s Civilization VI: Gathering Storm (1080p) benchmark on it and it notched 33 frames per second. This is worse than the average premium laptop (46 fps).

Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 (Image credit: Future)

As I expected, the Surface Laptop 5 also failed to outpace the 10-core GPU inside the M2 chip; the MacBook Air delivered 40 fps. To the Surface Laptop 5’’s delight, the Acer Swift 5, packed with Intel Iris Xe graphics, couldn’t beat the Microsoft laptop with a measly score of 26 fps. The Surface Laptop 4 beat the Surface Laptop 5 by a hair (35 fps).

On Test: Surface Laptop 5 | i5 | 16GB RAM | 256GB SSD

Thanks to Microsoft, I was able to get my hands on a Surface Laptop 5 on launch day and have been using it as my daily machine to allow me to put it through the paces and write this hands-on review.

If you have never looked at the Surface line of laptops before, then you should! – Microsoft make the most gorgeous looking, premium devices on the market – all of which feature an anodized aluminum metal process, resulting in a luxury and smooth finish, which closely resembles the look and class of a MacBook. If you’ve ever used a cheaper, plastic built Laptop before, you will instantly notice the premium feel of Surface difference.

For this review, I tested testing a 13.5″ black Surface running Windows 11 22H2, powered by a

Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 performance

Temper your expectations, dear reader. The 12th Gen Intel Core i7 1265U CPU packed inside the Surface Laptop 5 isn’t designed to be a performance beast. After all, it is a U-series chip; U stands for ultra-low power. These chips are great for slim, lightweight laptops because they’re less likely to overheat, but they don’t deliver top-of-the-line performance.

Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 (Image credit: Future)

As such, I didn’t expect the Surface Laptop 5 to beat the MacBook Air’s Roadrunner-esque M2 chip on the Geekbench 5.4 overall performance test — and my assumptions were correct. The Microsoft laptop notched a multi-core score of 6,560 while the MacBook Air achieved an incredible score of 8,919. The Acer Swift, with an Intel Core i7-1260P CPU, crushed both the Surface Laptop 5 and the M2 MacBook Air with a shocking score of 9,859. However, what I wasn’t anticipating was a generation-over-generation setback in performance. The AMD Ryzen 7 4980U chip inside the 15-inch Surface Laptop 4 bested the Surface Laptop 5 with a score of 6,748. WTF?

Up until this point, I was pretty much onboard with recommending the Surface Laptop 5, but with this revelation, I’m suppressing my praise. On the plus side, the Surface Laptop 5’s multitasking skills are on point. Flooding Google Chrome with an avalanche of 40 tabs, the Microsoft laptop didn’t utter a single moan of oppression. Continuing my typical workload after stressing it out, the Surface Laptop 5 handled everything like a champ.

We tasked the Surface Laptop 5 with converting a 4K video to 1080p using the Handbrake transcoding app; it took 8 minutes and 53 seconds to finish. This is better than the average premium laptop (9:58), but worse than the M2 MacBook Air (7:52) and the Acer Swift 5 (7:36). Continuing to disappoint the hell out of me, however, the Surface Laptop 4 finished the task 32 seconds faster than the Surface Laptop 5. What is going on here?

Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 (Image credit: Future)

Microsoft claims that the Surface Laptop 5 is 50% faster than its predecessor, but perhaps it’s only referring to the Intel-based Surface Laptop 4. It’s not talking about the AMD model, that’s for sure!

Screen & speakers

  • Work-focussed 3:2 aspect ratio display
  • LCD ‘PixelSense’ touchscreen panel
  • Decent Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers

Microsoft hasn’t yet made the jump to OLED in its laptops, and instead still equips the Surface Laptop 5 with LCD displays, using panels it calls ‘PixelSense’. It also sticks with the standard 60Hz refresh rate, rather than adopting a more responsive panel.

There’s little difference between the screens on the two sizes here other than the resolution: 2256 x 1504 in the smaller model, and 2496 x 1664 in the larger – with a matching pixel density of 201ppi in either case.

Dominik Tomaszewski / Foundry

Actual screen quality mostly impresses. You won’t enjoy the deep blacks and wider dynamic range of an OLED panel, but this is bright enough to suit a range of lighting conditions, with vibrant colours and plenty of detail on offer. It’s a touchscreen too, giving you another option for navigating Windows, and it supports the Surface Pen stylus, though this is sold separately.

As for audio, in addition to the 3.5mm headphone jack (no longer a guarantee on a modern laptop) you’ll get a pair of built-in speakers. These are upfiring – which is good – but fire through the keyboard – which is less so.

Quality is decent, with plenty of clarity, but a distinct lack of bass even by laptop standards. Dolby Atmos support should help when watching movies or playing games in particular, but at this quality level won’t make a whole lot of difference.

Performance

  • Updated with a 12th Gen Intel Core processor
  • Still not as fast as the competition
  • Low base storage and sluggish SSD speeds

The processor is the biggest upgrade for the Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 compared to its predecessor, although I’m still not hugely impressed by the chip’s performance.

The Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 is powered by a 12th Generation Intel Core i7-1255U processor. It’s a clear improvement on the Surface Laptop 4, but the U-Series CPU that Microsoft has opted for doesn’t compare well to the more powerful P-Series processor of the Dell XPS 13 Plus. Even the M1-powered MacBook Air posted superior performance scores, despite launching two years earlier.

Surface Laptop 5 Surface Laptop 4 Dell XPS 13 Plus MacBook Air
CPU Intel Core i7-1255U Intel Core i5-1135G7 Intel Core i7-1260P Apple M1
Geekbench 5 single/multi 1206 / 6649 1307 / 4844 1467 / 7155 1731 / 7308
PCMark 10 4107 4088 5211 N/A

There’s no doubt you can find more powerful laptops elsewhere without spending more, but that doesn’t mean Microsoft’s laptop is slow. It’s still comfortably fast enough to hop between web pages without slowdown, while even having multiple apps running in the background. You won’t need a faster machine for basic productivity tasks.

The underwhelming benchmark scores are only really problematic if you need a high-performance machine for the likes of content creation. The Surface Laptop 5 is no competitor to the MacBook Pro, or indeed the Surface Laptop Studio, especially since it lacks a discrete GPU.

The base storage option for the Surface Laptop 5 only packs a 256GB SSD. I really don’t think that’s enough space for most people these days, unless you rely heavily on the cloud. Fortunately, you can upgrade to a 512GB model (or 1TB model if you opt for the 15-inch version), although it is fairly costly to do so.

I was really disappointed by the laptop’s SSD speeds. With read and write speeds of 3560 MB/s and 2483 MB/s respectively, other laptops such as the Dell XPS 13 Plus are twice as fast when saving or loading data to the physical drive. This can affect multiple workloads, including booting up the laptop or even opening an app such as Spotify or Netflix.

Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 15 specs

Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 15 is based on 10-cores CPU Intel Core i7-1255U. CPU TDP of Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 15 is 30 watts, which is the average. On the one hand, the processor cannot boast of exceptional performance, on the other – it can still be considered a portable device that can be used away from the outlet. Intel Iris Xe Graphics G7 96EUs is responsible for the graphics.

Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 15 has 16 GB 2-channel RAM DDR5 soldered on the board. Currently, this is the minimum recommended amount for comfortable work and modern games. This is enough even for a simple video editing.

In our configuration, a fast SSD SK Hynix BC711 512GB HFM512GD3GX013N with a volume of 512 GB is presented as storage. SSD capacity is enough for most tasks, however, if you are interested in video production or modern games, 512 GB may not be enough.

Экран и динамики

  • Рабочий дисплей с соотношением сторон 3:2
  • ЖК-панель PixelSense с сенсорным экраном
  • Достойные динамики с поддержкой Dolby Atmos

Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 review: verdict

If you’re searching for a combination of style, a good screen and a reliable system then the Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 is unlikely to disappoint. The sleek compact aluminium design looks premium and feels sturdy while the hardware inside lends itself well to productivity-based tasks, this is a great choice for busy workdays and evening entertainment, although it isn’t necessarily built for graphics-intensive tasks like videogames.

What’s more is that the Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 has decent battery life and a fast charge time, so you’ll be able to pop this in your bag to use out and about without worrying too much about getting caught short.

Some people might be looking for a few more ports around the frame like an SD card slot or an HDMI, but even so, I was pleased to see that they have added in the USB-C with Thunderbolt 4 support because it opens up a whole world of opportunity when it comes to hooking it up external monitors and all of your other devices.

All in all, while it has its flaws, there isn’t that much bad to say about this PC. It’s a great choice if you’re willing to spend the money on it!
