Lenovo ThinkPad L15 Gen 4: Performance

As far as performance goes, this laptop is generally let down by the lack of a discrete GPU, so really the only thing you’ll be able to do with this device (assuming you have the Core i5 or better and 16GB RAM) is productivity software, cloud computing work, video streaming, and conference calls. For that, this laptop is sufficient, but you really don’t want to step much further beyond that.

The Core i7-1365U CPU in my review unit didn’t score especially well in CPU benchmarks. Its scores are about 7% higher in Geekbench 5’s single core benchmar than the Dell Inspiron 16 2-in-1 from 2022 did, and that device was running a Core i5-1235U, so it’s a generation and a tier behind this chip. Even worse, the Core i7-1365U in the L15 Gen 4 scored about 11% slower than the Inspiron 15’s older chip did.

For storage speed, the L15’s SSD is pretty middle of the road with a 25GB file folder transfer rate of about 1,102MB a second, taking about 24 seconds to complete the operation.

The productivity benchmarks are likewise fairly middling, with Crossmark’s productivity score landing strictly in only-keep-one-office-app-open-at-a-time territory.

As for this processor’s integrated graphics, it again falls well short of the Core i5-1235U in the 2022 Dell Inspiron 16 -2-in-1, which was also able to run 3DMark’s Fire Strike test, which the L15 Gen 4 wasn’t able to complete without the benchmark crashing.

Given the specs and the performance so far, I definitely wouldn’t recommend you game on this device with anything above Solitaire or similar, though you might be able to make Civilization VI playable on a plane ride if you turn all the settings to low and maybe consider playing at 720p rather than full 1080p.

Lenovo ThinkPad L15 Gen 4 performance

Lenovo ThinkPad L15 Gen 4 is hardly a leader in performance, but AMD Ryzen 7 PRO 7730U performs one hundred percent and fully meets expectations. You will notice occasional system slowdowns only if you are used to powerful multi-core desktop computers. For a portable computer, this performance is more than sufficient. Speaking of numbers, in the PCMark 10 test Lenovo ThinkPad L15 Gen 4 scored about 5400 points.

The graphics subsystem in the form of AMD Radeon RX Vega 8 (Ryzen 4000/5000) will hardly be able to surprise you with something. But if you plan to use Lenovo ThinkPad L15 Gen 4 mainly for office work, then low graphics performance should not be considered a disadvantage. In the 3DMark 11 test, the laptop Lenovo ThinkPad L15 Gen 4 scores around 4200 points.

Price/Value

Being a powerful mobile workstation, the Lenovo ThinkPad P15 isn’t exactly cheap. Starting at US$2,759 and going all the way up to $12,759, our review unit as configured will set you back $7,352 before any savings. Thankfully, Lenovo is currently running a sale with systems starting at $1,600 and bringing our review configuration down to $4,264. Most other configurations are listed at 42-50% off. As you can see, the ThinkPad P15 Gen 2 can be as affordable or as pricey as you need it to be based on your workplace requirements.

Unfortunately, likely due to supply chain constraints, you may be waiting for a few months once you order your system. On that note, you may want to upgrade accordingly knowing that you may be waiting a while for your system. That being said, if you are fine with a pre-configured system, shipping seems a bit quicker on Amazon.

L Series

(Un)Conventional business laptops

Lenovo ThinkPad L-Series pairs big-league processing with sleek, consumer design for an optimal customer experience. They deliver comprehensive, business-class security with enhanced features. Perfect for any organization, mid-range L-Series ThinkPads offer enterprise quality docking capabilities and optional remote management.

Models:

  • Lenovo ThinkPad L13
  • Lenovo ThinkPad L13 Yoga
  • Lenovo ThinkPad L14
  • Lenovo ThinkPad L15

Distinguishing Features:

  • Among the ThinkPad lines, L-Series is the only one with a Yoga option– a term for 360° devices that can convert between laptop and tablet modes. ThinkPad L13 Yoga gives you all the flexibility of a standard 2-in-1, but with ThinkPad performance. It also includes a garaged stylus for an even greater touchscreen experience.
  • Many L-Series devices come with great perks like a 3 Year Depot Warranty and built-in system management with Intel vPro.
  • Compared with the E-Series, ThinkPad L-Series offers more robust security. It includes a host of powerful features to thwart intrusions and data theft, including the Lenovo ThinkShield security platform, secure multifactor authentication with Windows Hello, ThinkShutter webcam cover, a fingerprint reader, facial recognition capability, and more.
  • L-Series ThinkPads deliver a minimum of two USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-C ports for enhanced connectivity.

Trade-offs:

  • L-Series ThinkPads don’t have an option for a discrete graphics card. The built-in graphics are great (and exactly what an average worker typically would need), but if you’re looking for the ability to amp up your graphics even more, the L-Series isn’t for you.
  • If your goal is to get the most bang for your buck, ThinkPad E-series devices can often be a better value if you don’t mind going without some of the L-Series’ enhanced security features and higher-end finishes.

Who should buy from this series:

This is a great series for people interested in a 13” display or 2-in-1 Yoga capability. It’s also great for people who don’t want to budget for T-Series’ premium features, but still want something sleeker and lighter than the E-series.

Sound Quality

In the audio department, the Lenovo ThinkPad P15 Gen 2 features two 2W up-firing speakers. With the speaker grille above the keyboard, the sound is projected upwards, instead of down against whatever surface you have the laptop set on. This results in pretty crisp and loud audio, although as is the case with most laptops, there isn’t much in the low bass range. However, it is definitely good enough for use with video editing, watching most videos, or even listening to music in a pinch. Using the included Dolby Audio app does tweak the audio a bit if you’re listening to music as opposed to watching a movie.

Lenovo ThinkPad L15 Gen 4: Design

As for the design, you’re getting a fairly straightforward, classic look that’s familiar to anyone who’s used a Lenovo laptop before. While it may not win any awards for its aesthetics, the L15, like other ThinkPads, has been put through MIL-STD 810H torture tests for travel hazards such as shock, vibration, and temperature extremes. That means it’ll withstand the rigors of daily use and travel, ensuring durability and longevity — it might not be the best rugged laptop out there, but for the crunch of the commute or a busy office, it’s absolutely more than robust enough.

As with just about every Lenovo laptop at this point, the webcam (up to 1080p) comes with a privacy shutter, which is essential for any business user. The inclusion of IR face recognition and a fingerprint reader built into the power button provides two convenient ways to skip typing passwords, thanks to Windows Hello integration.

The laptop comes with a number of ports, including an ethernet connection, a microSD card slot, and a security lock slot. There is also an option for a SIM card for mobile broadband, which is great for getting work done on the go, even where WiFi connections might be spotty. If you do get WiFi, you can get up to WiFi 6E for even faster wireless speeds.

The display is a 15.6-inch full HD non-touch display with up to 300 nits of brightness, though it does stick with the 16:9 aspect ratio whereas a lot of laptops are spreading the screen out a bit further. The display can extend a full 180-degrees, so it’s not quite one of the best 2-in-1 laptops, but if you’re collaborating with colleagues, you’ll be able to share your work more easily without everyone hanging over your shoulders.

Speaking of looking over your shoulder, while the display offers broad viewing angles and decent contrast, the colors and brightness leave something to be desired. Many mid-price laptops now boast punchier colors and sharper resolutions, making the L15’s screen seem lackluster by comparison. It’s not particularly bright, and while you can get a 60Hz panel with up to 300 nits and white backgrounds appear clean, they generally lack vibrancy.

For office tasks and mainstream productivity like spreadsheets, this might be ideal since no one wants to stare into the sun while staring at rows and columns of data, but if you’re planning on doing more than staring at documents and reports, the display likely won’t be sufficient for any real multimedia work, making it struggle to stand out in a competitive market.

On the plus side, Lenovo is renown for its laptop keyboards, and the ThinkPad L15 Gen 4 continues this tradition. The backlit keyboard is smooth and comfortable, providing an exemplary layout with dedicated Home, End, Page Up, and Page Down keys. Additionally, you’ll find top-row shortcuts, including keys for Microsoft Teams calls, and a full-size tenkey pad on the right.

Like just about all Lenovo keyboards, it is a dream to type on for an extended period of time, so it will make long hours in the throes of work a good bit less taxing on your hands at least.

For cursor control, users have the option of a touchpad, which offers a slightly hollow but comfortable click, or Lenovo’s signature TrackPoint mini joystick embedded in the keyboard, accompanied by three large mouse buttons below the space bar. This combination provides flexibility in navigation, although it slightly reduces the size of the touchpad.

Sound from the speaker grille located above the keyboard is clear but not particularly loud, although it can fill a room at maximum volume. The audio quality lacks bass but is listenable with crisp instrumentals, allowing you to distinguish overlapping tracks. Dolby Access software provides various presets for different scenarios, including dynamic, game, music, movie, and voice, along with an equalizer and microphone noise cancellation. The music setting adds a bit of fullness to the sound, although it may still come across as slightly hollow.

Keyboard and Touchpad

The P1 has an attractive keyboard with generously sized keys. The company has incorporated distinct keys for Page Up and Page Down and has taken care to avoid trimming down Function keys as much as they often are. The machine is perfect for quiet areas because the keys are remarkably quiet. There were hardly any instances of ghosting, and the keys respond to your input rather swiftly.

The final feature merely emphasizes the P1’s superior gaming capabilities. Three integrated keys on a large touchpad control the pointer. Although not as quiet as the keys, the touch is fairly responsive. Personally, we think Lenovo’s ThinkPad mice are a little overdone, but if you like them, go for it.

The ThinkPad L540 comes up with a complete plastic materialistic approach and slightly carse surfaces are also present that adds to the aesthetics and designs of the laptop. The hinges that hold the screen are made up of metal and serve as a good positioner as well.

However, the device is completely made up of plastic but the quality is very high ensuring a whole sturdy and durable approach so that you may enjoy long-lasting serviceability.

Specs & Performance

This machine is a powerful and efficient workstation that comes up with the most amazing core i5 processors but you can configure or update these components very easily if you want to get even faster performance rates.

The 8 GB DDR4 RAM and lightning-fast SSD drive are present so that you might get a better and enhanced performance rate if you are using it as a business laptop.

Battery Life

In this machine, you will get a 56 Wh battery which can be easily changed in 3 hours only. When we tested this battery then it showed an average battery runtime after turning the wireless wifi systems off and deactivating all other things as well. The overall battery life on a single charge was 6 hours and 30 minutes, which is just OK.

Webcam

Like other predecessors and previous models, the Lenovo ThinkPad L540 also comes with a webcam having 720 pixels resolution and a very soft kind to focus. When we took some shots on ThinkPad L Series Laptop camera it does not feature any details well but you might see blurriness in the pictures also.

Just like other standard keyboards by Lenovo this model also has an amazing chiclet keyboard. Slightly grooved in and extensively sized keys can be seen in the keyboard which definitely adds to the aesthetics of the keyboard.

The TrackPad of the device is very spacious so that you might get precise and accurate cursor moves. In addition to the TouchPad, there also comes a TrackPoint cursor control on the keyboard.

The screen comes up in a matte surface having 15.6 inches full high-definition display. You can get crystal clear and very eye-catching visuals with such a beautiful display that has an aspect ratio of 16:9.

If you want to do video calls then these dual stereo speakers by Lenovo are good enough. The high, mids, and lows are delivered well somehow but they are not sufficient to be used in the large rooms or conference halls. The speakers are mounted at the bottom.

Lenovo ThinkPad P1 Gen 4 review: Display

The ThinkPad P1’s display had me salivating like Homer Simpson does when he’s craving donuts. Amazing beauty. The ThinkPad P1’s roomy 16-inch display is perfect for me because We’ve always been a sucker for a big screen. Its 16:10 aspect ratio creates a higher, narrower canvas, giving business users who frequently scroll through lengthy documents and spreadsheets extra vertical space.

The WQXGA panel’s 4K (3840 x 2400 pixel) resolution adds to its glitz. (It’s also important to note that a 4K touchscreen is available in some configurations.) we noticed tiny lines dripping from Winona Ryder’s lower lash line in the Stranger Things 4 trailer because the screen is so sharp. We also noticed Gaten Matarazzo’s sparse mustache, as well as the light stubble on his upper lip.

Performance

With its 11th Generation Intel Core i9-11950H Processor with vPro (2.6 GHz, up to 5.0GHz with Turbo Boost, 8 Cores, 16 Threads, 24MB Cache), 32GB of DDR4 memory, 1TB NVMe SSD, and NVIDIA RTX A5000 16GB Max-Q graphics, you’d expect this mobile workstation to chew through anything. And chew through it did. I’ve actually never heard of the A5000 before as most NVIDIA systems I’ve used to date feature the RTX 10xx, 20xx, or 30xx graphics cards. Turns out the Axxx series is more workstation-focused and is powered by NVIDIA’s Ampere architecture. While our mobile version with Max-Q has 16GB of VRAM, the desktop version of the A5000 graphics card features 24GB. Regardless, the card, coupled with the other specifications, made quick work of the apps I tested the system with.

I mainly use Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom and image processing, editing, rendering, and exporting were much quicker than I’ve experienced on most other systems. I did run a quick Adobe Premiere rendering test and it was equally as quick. Not once did I experience any laggy performance or slow down. Granted, this ThinkPad P15 Gen 2 configuration is pretty beefy, and there are plenty of available configurations so you can pick and choose what’s important for your mobile workflow.

Another feature I hadn’t heard of before is the ISV (Independent Software Vendors) certification. With it, you can be assured that the ThinkPad P15 Gen 2 is compatible with the higher-end software application that you use, including 3dsMax, AutoCAD, and Maya. You can check the full list of ISV-certified software compatible with this mobile workstation on Lenovo’s website.
