Ayaneo air 1s vs steam deck: is deck still unbeatable?

NVIDIA GeForce RTX–

Verdict

General, I feel the Ayaneo Air 1S has quite a lot of potential, particularly for somebody extra tech-savvy than me. I like you can play video games from quite a lot of providers, the show is beautiful, and video games run easily on it earlier than the display begins to glitch. I simply suppose there’s much more that may very well be performed to make this the optimum handheld console for me.

I’d quite use one thing with much less energy and a less-open OS that doesn’t make me really feel unhappy and dissatisfied each time I boot it as much as board the Astral Specific or pocket heal in Overwatch 2. The worth level additional solidifies this for me, as I’m not getting the additional advantage that I’d be paying for.

For those who don’t thoughts having to tinker a bit together with your tech earlier than it’s able to go, otherwise you’re simply in search of one thing actually fairly to play some low-intensity video games on, the Ayaneo Air 1S is perhaps for you. I’m not fully counting it out, but it surely’s left a little bit of a bitter style in my mouth.

Design

The ayaneo Air 1S might be one of the most impressive portable handhelds we’ve looked at. The console retains the shape of the Ayaneo Air Pro, which we reviewed last year, and you can expect all of the premium functions like hall sensing analog sticks, triggers, and an ergonomic shell.

Up top you get a fingerprint scanner and volume rocker in addition to a USB port, as well as a USB port at the bottom, which is joined by a MicroSD card slot for easy expansion. The buttons feel great, and the triggers are among the best that we have ever used. Ayaneo’s sheer product design prowess shows through, as even during intense sessions of Hades or Rogue Legacy 2 showed us that while the device is small, it remains incredibly comfortable throughout.

One thing to note is that the screen can get uncomfortably hot while running cutting-edge AAA titles, which can be disconcerting, but the device never got hot enough to trigger its thermal limit and automatically power off, even after I went through demanding segments of Armored Core 6.

One thing I would have liked to have seen with this iteration is the addition of back buttons, which will debut with the upcoming Ayaneo Kun, it feels like a missed opportunity to not include this in a Windows 11 device of this nature, especially as others might be used to them on Steam Deck.

Retro Powered

The colorway we received the Ayaneo Air 1S in is reminiscent of a classic SNES, which we absolutely loved. It’s a shame that this color is limited to the higher-end model, as we much prefer it over the other colors available on the product, too.

Speaker performance

Now that Ayaneo is a more mature handheld business, we really wish that the company included better-performing speakers in its chassis. Every title barring retro games sounded muddy, with nonexistent lows and mids, and most of the mix focusing on the high end. This leaves a tinny impression on the ears, so be sure to equip yourself with a pair of earbuds, or risk making your ears bleed.

Performance

Sadly, that is where things begin to get a bit bumpy. I’ll start with the positives – every part looks beautiful when it’s running on the Ayaneo. The high pixel density and brightness of the AMOLED screen make for a colourful, vibrant display that puts my PC monitor to shame. The thing is, this only lasts for therefore long. During my testing, I used to be initially running Honkai Star Rail on the very best settings because that’s what it defaulted to, it looked phenomenal and ran with none lag.

I only managed to play for about ten minutes before the whole bottom half of the screen began to visually glitch, making every part fuzzy and unreadable. On top of that, the screen was so hot that it felt prefer it could melt at any moment. The console itself didn’t feel too warm, however the heat emanating from the screen was terrifying. I’ve since fiddled with the fan settings a bit and adjusted my graphics settings right down to medium, but I still experience this visual glitch after playing for greater than twenty minutes or so.

Because the Ayaneo is basically a tiny PC that runs Windows 11, it’s fiddlier than other handhelds with dedicated OSs built for gaming just like the Steam Deck and the Nintendo Switch. Ayaneo’s unique AyaSpace 2 is a fairly handy tool that collates your whole games from across Steam, Epic Games, Battle.net, and other launchers into one place so you may switch between titles easily. No less than, in theory. I had a very hard time getting the Ayaneo to acknowledge all the games that I’d downloaded and kind them into the AyaSpace, so I discovered myself launching games via their desktop shortcuts like I might on a PC.

The Aya button can be the way you navigate the console when you’re playing a game, covering every part from adjusting the FPS and fan speed on the fly to supplying you with button shortcuts whenever you’re not using a keyboard. That is where I played about with the fan settings to try to solve the HSR problem, but to someone relatively un-tech-savvy, I discovered all of it really hard to navigate. There’s little or no by means of an instruction booklet that comes with the Ayaneo, so I’ve found myself learning through trial and error, which isn’t really my desired method after I’m handling a bit of kit value over $1k.

The Aya button’s handy taskbar ought to be the equivalent of a plumber’s tool belt, supplying you with every part you would need exactly whenever you need it. But I’ve found it almost not possible to make use of. Any time I take advantage of the directional pad to navigate the Aya menu and adjust the FPS or fan settings, my character or cursor in my chosen game continues moving. Similarly, I’ve installed a shortcut within the taskbar to shut the sport I’m currently playing so I can get back to my desktop, and for some reason, this just doesn’t work. I don’t know why! It’s incredibly frustrating, having to make use of the window button to essentially Alt+Tab out of the sport after which use my finger on the molten hot screen to force close the sport.

The screen size, while great for actually playing games, is lower than ideal when you could use an on-screen keyboard or pass a captcha test. It’s just a bit bit too small, making typing quite difficult in case you don’t have essentially the most slender fingers on this planet. I attempted using my partner’s Microsoft Surface Pen to see if that may be compatible, because the Ayaneo is technically a tablet computer, but no luck there. I used to be just left struggling to type. I’ve found the best solution to navigate this issue is definitely to show the device on its side so the screen is longer relatively than wider, and kind on it like a smartphone.

The battery life isn’t exactly great either. I can get a solid 90 minutes of gaming in before I drain it from full charge to almost dying. It looks as if that is fairly common across handheld PCs though, so it’s not just like the Ayaneo is doing any worse than its competitors in that regard. My fundamental issue with the battery is that I’m afraid to make use of it while it’s charging in case I add much more heat to an already scorching console and damage it.

The sound can be sub-par, with the Hyper Sound stereo speakers sounding tinnier than my iPhone. Luckily this appears to be a speaker issue relatively than an audio processing one because the sound is great through wired headphones, but I don’t want to take a seat there wearing headphones the entire time while I’m attempting to play games and socialize with my partner at the identical time.

With 2TB of storage plus room for an SD card, there’s good enough room in your entire games collection, which I do appreciate, especially as I play a whole lot of games with massive file sizes (taking a look at you, Genshin Impact). But sadly this doesn’t make up for all the other pitfalls.

Performance

The AMD Ryzen 7 7840U is one of the most powerful portable chipsets you can find, and the Ayaneo 1S outperforms the Steam Deck in terms of performance if you give it enough TDP to play. We enabled the Smart TDP feature in all tests and it always worked as promised, whether we were emulating a Gamecube title or running Starfield on the handheld.

No matter what we threw at it, be it a RetroBat setup to emulate older systems or running Cyberpunk 2077, the handheld managed to withstand even the toughest workloads. The 1200p screen shines here, and we love the AMOLED, which makes games look even better than on Steam Deck or larger handhelds.

Think about scaling up your user interfaces. So either use Ayaspace or take advantage of things like Retrobat or Steam Big Picture mode to make the experience much smoother.

We just wish the company would also offer a variable refresh rate screen, as that could also save valuable battery life. Until then, we were able to run almost everything by setting a 30 FPS limit and changing the settings for the more demanding titles.

Battery life and fan noise

Running a demanding title results in about an hour and a half of battery life on the Ayaneo 1S, but playing or emulating retro titles or lighter indies added about an hour to that time. One thing to note is that the device gets warm and you can adjust the fan settings, which can become audibly loud at quiet settings.

We spent a two-hour flight playing exclusively Rogue Legacy 2, and the handheld performed incredibly well without us having to reach for a charger, although the battery was actually dead by the end of our session.

Synthetic benchmarks

The Ayaneo Air 1S performed admirably, even compared to some of the most powerful handhelds you can buy today, like the Asus ROG Ally. Although the stats are slightly lower than its bigger brothers, it’s also a lot smaller, and if you’re willing to pay a premium, it could be the ideal handheld for you.

Performance

Turning our attention to the performance, AYANEO has showcased several gameplay videos that demonstrate impressive TDPs at various levels. When running Forza Horizon 5 at 720p settings with 20 watts, this console achieves an average of 77FPS while maintaining a temperature of 57 degrees Celsius. Also, when upgrading to a 1080p resolution with identical settings, it still manages to reach at 60FPS mark, with the temperature slightly elevated at 58 degrees Celsius.

Steam Deck, however, cannot game in 1080p resolution on a handheld mode, but while docked in with an external monitor, it certainly can. Games like Forza Horizon-5 can run at 60FPS at 720p lower settings while the FSR is on. However, the temperature might go as high as 79 degrees Celsius.

So yes, gaming on the AYANEO AIR 1S is definitely going to be a much smoother experience than the Steam Deck. Simply, because the internal hardware is much superior and powerful.

The verdict: 4/5

But that size also makes the device much more travel-friendly than other options like the ROG Ally, Ayaneo 2S, or the Steam Deck, and that’s why I ended up using it a lot more than those other options. Although battery life is an insurmountable problem of physics, you can still have a good gaming session without having to reach for a charger, and considering you can run almost any modern gaming title on the system, that’s great.

We just wish there were additional design updates added to the system like trackpads or back buttons, as that would have just improved the experience that much further. Otherwise, it’s a very iterative update from the start, but a welcome one as it now offers incredibly competitive power compared to its contemporaries. Keep in mind that using Windows 11 on such a small screen is far from ideal.

How does the AYANEO Air feel?

I have the base model and the pro model in for this review. The base Air features a 2.3ghz Ryzen 5 5560U Processor, 16GB’s RAM, 512GB of internal storage, a stunning 5.5” AMOLED 1080P display and a 7350MAH battery capacity.

The pro is slightly more powerful and slightly thicker featuring a Ryzen 7 5825U, 16GB’s RAM and a large 10,000MAH battery capacity.

The base model is 18mm thin at the middle, which is incredibly thin for something this powerful, the pro model comes in at 21.6mm at the middle, again, still very thin, impressively thin in fact.

base above, pro below

This on paper is like nothing on the market, it’s a tiny powerhouse that’s ready to take on whatever you have to chuck at it.

The incredible display matched with the perfect ergonomics makes it an incredibly comfortable handheld to play on for… this is where i say long periods of time, but it’s typically short periods of times… you’ll see why.

They have added large, slightly flared shoulder buttons that have a lot of travel to them. These feel great when playing racing and shooting games, but not so much when you’re playing fast paced games. The shoulder buttons match the unique gradient that goes across the top of the device which is something I haven’t seen before.

The top also features a fingerprint reader too, again, something I haven’t seen in a handheld yet, this is a nice addition, even though it makes something more complicated than it should be and can sometimes be a little buggy.

While I am on the subject of buttons I need to bring up the small action buttons, at first I didn’t like them, they’re noticeably smaller than traditional handhelds, but I grew to fall in love with them, the same goes with the lovely analogue sticks that are made with hull sensing technology that basically stops drift, oh and they light up! How adorable.

The whole aesthetic of the AYANEO Air is small, but that’s what makes it such a cute, portable device, and i hate to say it, but this is probably the most comfortable handheld PC i have ever played on, it makes the Steam Deck look and feel like i am playing with King Kong’s big toe.

But with beauty comes the beast, and because it uses Windows 11, it’s an absolute pain in the backside to navigate. So much so that they sent us a keyboard to use when setting it up, and that’s the downfall with it being so small, the screen is so tiny that it’s nearly impossible to use with just the touchscreen, so id almost say it’s mandatory to use it with a keyboard when setting it up.

And because the screen is just 5.5” wide it does make text quite hard to see when playing certain games, the same goes for targeting enemies that are far away in shooting games for example.

AYANEO was nice enough to create their own launcher which houses a bunch of settings, it can load your games library and it’s a far better experience than running Windows or even the Xbox library.

It’s easy to understand, it allows you to customise your RGB light setup and it pulls in your library from a wide number of other launchers too, heck you can even add shortcuts to your emulators which makes it a great all in one hub.

But because it’s so new I ran into a lot of bugs that made this a little less fluid than I would have liked, I do think these can be easily fixed and it’s likely AYANEO are already working on it for when they ship customers products.

Now let’s talk about performance, because I was blown away with what this can do.

Design

After I first opened the Ayaneo Air 1S, I used to be immediately impressed. I’ve got the Retro Power version and while it’s not my first selection of design, I like how reminiscent it’s of the unique Game Boy. It’s really light at 450g – barely heavier than a Nintendo Switch – and a pleasant, compact size that feels great in my hands.

The curved shape of the back makes for a very ergonomic design, because it doesn’t cause the identical wrist fatigue that I can get from holding my Switch for too long. The subtle RGBs within the joystick ring are a pleasant touch too, turning red whenever you’re running low on charge.

The entire buttons have an important tactile feel to them and the triggers feel great. I’m normally not a fan of a matte finish on things but it surely works very well on the Ayaneo, especially with the beige-brown color palette of the Retro Power. The Hall sensing joysticks are a joy to make use of too, especially when using considered one of them rather than a mouse to maneuver your cursor. I haven’t had any issues to date with misread inputs and the caps are replaceable in case you manage to wear them down.

The 2 USB-C ports are positioned on the highest and bottom of the Ayaneo, meaning you may charge your device while using a docking station (take a look at our Syntech docking station review for an important suggestion) and swap out the hand held controls for a Bluetooth controller or mouse and keyboard. Sadly, the Ayaneo doesn’t include a docking station of its own as standard, but you should buy one for an additional $89 (ouch). Nonetheless, the USB-C port should make it compatible with most third-party models in the marketplace.

Ayaneo Air 1S Retro Power performance

Ayaneo Air 1S Retro Power is hardly a leader in performance, but AMD Ryzen 7 7840U performs one hundred percent and fully meets expectations. You will notice occasional system slowdowns only if you are used to powerful multi-core desktop computers. For a portable computer, this performance is more than sufficient. Speaking of numbers, in the PCMark 10 test Ayaneo Air 1S Retro Power scored about 5800 points.

The graphics subsystem represented by AMD Radeon 780M is perfectly average and perfectly complements AMD Ryzen 7 7840U. In the 3DMark 11 test, the laptop Ayaneo Air 1S Retro Power scores around 10000 points.

Worth and availability

The Ayaneo Air 1S is presently out there to buy by way of Ayaneo’s Indiegogo web page with a barely decreased MSRP and a present bundle as an ‘early chook’ perk. This machine could also be highly effective, but it surely comes at a value. Right here’s a breakdown of all of the totally different variations:

  • 16GB+512GB – $799 early chook/$899
  • 32GB+1TB – $955 early chook/$1,099
  • 32GB+2TB – $999 early chook/$1,129
  • 32GB+2TB Ayaneo Air 1S Skinny – $999 early chook/$1,129
  • 32GB+2TB Ayaneo Air 1S Retro Energy – $1,029 early chook/$1,179
  • 32GB+4TB Ayaneo Air 1S Retro Energy – $1,099 early chook/$1,259

The entire listings on Indiegogo provide free worldwide transport and from our expertise, they ship from a warehouse in China. You is perhaps topic to customs costs relying on the place you’re based mostly, however we didn’t face any points with that.

Whereas not fairly as expensive because the Aokzoe A1 or Professional, the Ayaneo Air 1S is fairly up there in comparison with a few of its opponents, significantly the Asus ROG Ally which may begin at slightly below $600. The Steam Deck is even cheaper than this, but it surely doesn’t afford you an identical flexibility because the Ayaneo given its Steam-specific OS.

CPU-Z bench:

Display

Now that we have seen some gameplay performance, let’s have a clear look at the display of both these handhelds. The display size of the new AYANEO AIR 1S is much smaller. It’s a 5.5-inch screen with 60hertz of refresh rate and 1080p resolution. Despite its size, what makes this screen interesting is that it’s going to be an OLED panel, featuring 350 nits of brightness. On top of that, unlike other handhelds, the screen here is completely bezel-less.

In comparison, Steam Deck possesses a much larger 7-inch display compared to the AYANEO AIR 1S. It’s an IPS panel screen with a native resolution of 1280 by 800 and 400 nits of brightness. Although it might not be as impressive as the OLED panel on the AYANEO AIR 1S, it is still loved by fans.

Verdict

If you’re looking for something that is pocket friendly, powerful, and paired with the best handheld screen you can get on the market, look no further than the AYANEO Air 1S. While the point of entry is rather expensive, those hoping to get their money’s worth need to look no further than this adorable little pocket PC. With the vastly improved Ayaspace 2 putting it near the same pedestal as SteamOS, navigating Windows on a handheld has never been better, and can only get better with updates.

While the heat issue does worry me slightly about the longevity of this device and the battery doesn’t last as long as I would like it to, the extreme portability of this device makes usage a breeze and makes it hard for me to want to pick up my Steam Deck from this point forward. A monster in almost every regard, except for the overall size of the device. If you’ve got the income, you can stop shopping now, but if you’re looking for a handheld on a budget, other options could fit the bill.

If you’re interested in getting an AYANEO Air 1S of your own, head over to their to lock in your price.
