Aokzoe a1 handheld review — power and size for just the right price

Final Verdict

Steam Deck definitely is the most affordable windows gaming handheld out there in this price range, with solid performance and internal hardware. But AOKZOE A1 is also one of the most powerful gaming handhelds with top-tier internal specs.”

So, if you do care about the price, then the Steam Deck is definitely worth the value and if the price doesn’t bother you at all, then Aokzoe A1 can be your ultimate choice for windows handheld gaming.

Steam Deck has been quite a lot popular among handheld users since its first release earlier this year. But there are a few other handheld devices that are much more powerful than the Steam Deck.

Display and sound

The Aokzoe A1 features an 8-inch, fullfit IPS display, with a pixel density of 283PPI, a resolution of 1920 x 1200, DC dimming, and a brightness of 250nit. Overall, it looks pretty good and displays colors well, but I feel an OLED display would make a big difference in making games look more vivid and rich.

Its PPI (number of pixels per inch) could be higher, with most modern phones sitting at around 350 or more. Its brightness is also a little underwhelming at 250nit, especially considering good brightness on a phone is considered around 800 to 1200nit.

As a result, the Aokzoe’s display really doesn’t hold up well in natural light, even if you go into the Aokzoe overlay and whack it up to max – this is especially noticeable when playing darker games like Amnesia: The Bunker or Resident Evil 4 Remake – so no mowing down those ganados out in the garden, sadly.

Naturally, the lower resolution does take some of the sparkle out of certain games, but that’s entirely to be expected considering the size of the screen, and is far less noticeable in games that offer that shiny AI upscaling I mentioned earlier.

The screen also supports ten points touch, which is a nice addition for desktop mode and some games like Genshin Impact or Honkai Star Rail. Sadly, many titles don’t support touchscreen controls though – for example, in Power Wash Simulator a tap registers as a mouse click and starts spraying wherever your joystick is pointed, so you can’t easily tap to open a menu or change your nozzles. Of course, this isn’t a fault on Aokzoe’s end, just an observation for those hoping to spray surfaces with the swipe of a finger.

It’s a mission to find the screen’s refresh rate anywhere online, but by looking at Windows display settings I discovered that it’s set at 60Hz. This is decent and the same as the Steam Deck’s, but once again pales in comparison to high-end gaming phones, and is half the refresh rate of the ROG Ally’s 120Hz.

If you’re a bit lost about how this makes a difference, the refresh rate of your display refers to how many times per second your display is able to draw a new image, which affects how smooth things look. Generally, for gaming, you want your screen to be 120Hz or higher.

One interesting feature of the display is tied to the console’s 6-axis sensor, which allows you to hold your Aokzoe A1 vertically and have the screen rotate with you. I’m not really sure where this will be useful, as, even if you do have a game that runs better in portrait mode, it’s quite unwieldy at this angle. Luckily, you can head to the Windows display settings and toggle the rotation off if you like. There may be other uses for this 6-axis sensor beyond rotating your display, but I’ve yet to find a PC game that supports the feature.

Now, onto the sound. The Aokzoe A1 has two speakers in what the Aokzoe website refers to as a ‘double stereo base cavity’ located at the bottom of the console, on either side of the screen – they sit pretty close to where your palms and thumbs lay naturally when holding the device.

You can control the volume through two raised buttons on the top, with the left button turning it up and the right button turning it down. This feels like it’s backwards, considering other consoles like the Steam Deck and the Nintendo Switch have the volume buttons the other way around, but that’s neither here nor there.

The volume pumps up pretty high but, as you’d expect from a small, built-in speaker, the quality isn’t all that great. It sounds quite tinny and lacks bass, but it does the job fine – though I do generally prefer to connect to my noise-canceling wireless earbuds for a more immersive sound experience.

Game Tests

Now, the game tests. I went through a multitude of games to test how they run. I chose some intense games, like Starfield and Mortal Kombat 1, to test how much performance the 6800U can carry while also testing Brotato and Stardew Valley, to test low-watt performance and battery life. Overall, I would say I am impressed on both fronts.

A quick note on the speakers: they can get moderately loud, but they do feel muffled. The speakers on the Steam Deck are a bit better, but the ones on the AOKZOE A1 work well.

Starfield

Probably the most challenging game to run that I tested, Starfield is a tough one. After all my testing was done, I felt that playing on low settings with FSR, resolution at 1280×800, and using the maximum amount of power to get this to a primarily stable 30 FPS was possible. Some cities still brought it down slightly, as well as some flying scenarios, but every combat and landing area outside of that was flawless and looked great on the bigger screen.

Mortal Kombat 1

Another newer game I wanted to test is Mortal Kombat 1. Like Starfield, running it takes a lot of power, but the AOKZOE A1 can. It will require lower settings with FSR 2 set to Balanced and resolution at 1280×800, but it will hit and stay at 60 FPS for almost every stage. A couple of stages can fall to 55 at the lowest, but I may not have noticed without the performance overlay.

Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077 was a bit tough, but I found that playing at 1920×1200 with maximum power and low-ish settings could get around 30 FPS while playing at 1280×800 with similar settings could almost hit 40. I liked playing at 1280×800 with 30 FPS, but the visuals turned up, and TDP limit was slightly lower at 23W. This worked perfectly for me, creating a sharp image image while also keeping a stable framerate.

Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered

Playing Marvel’s Spider-Man like this was phenomenal. Playing at 1920×1200 with medium graphics and 25W TDP was possible at 40 FPS, playing at 1280×800 with 15W TDP at 40 FPS was possible, AND bumping power up to play at 60 FPS was nearly there! When swinging across the town, there are some dips, but it all usually stuck above 40. I was blown away by how well it worked!

Destiny 2

While I couldn’t get any screenshots, Destiny 2 runs incredibly well on the AOKZOE A1. At 23W, a mix of medium to low settings can hit around 40 FPS at 1920×1200 resolution or 60 FPS at 1280×800 resolution. Mixing this with the RSR upscaling and playing at 1280×800 at 60 FPS was phenomenal.

Brotato

One of the less demanding games to run, Brotato is one of the most popular games to play on handhelds. I wanted to see how much battery life I could get while playing, and I was thrilled with the results. With a TDP/Performance limit of 6W and 1920×1200 resolution, I could get around 10W — 11W battery drain for a total of 5.5 — 6 hours of battery life and a solid 60 FPS.

Stardew Valley

Stardew Valley is another straightforward game to run. With a TDP limit of 5W, I could play at a solid 60 FPS for around 6.5 hours at the max 1920×1200 resolution. Pair this with the bigger screen and more vivid colors,; this was my favorite way to play.

Screen & Sound quality

As I mentioned earlier the A1 features an 8-inch IPS display, with a pixel density of 283PPI, and a resolution of 1920 x 1200 with a brightness of 250nit. Overall, it looks stunning and really puts the SteamDeck display to shame. Whilst it may not be OLED standard, you will not be let down by the image quality. The only thing I would say, is that you will struggle to play the A1 outdoors, especially if it’s too sunny. But this wasn’t an issue for me, as I tend to use my gaming handhelds indoors.

It’s a shame that the A1 only supports 60Hz and not 120Hz like the ROG Ally’s. This would have made a world of difference, and would have heightened the gamers experience tenfold. But what we have here is totally acceptable and pleasing.

Sound wise the A1 has two speakers located at the bottom of the handheld. On the AOKZOE website they state that the speakers are ‘double stereo base cavity’.

I’m not exactly what difference this is supposed to make, but sound quality is ok, nothing startling but certainly on par with the SteamDecks. The speakers go quite loud and whilst they may not be have a great deal of base, they were clear.

CPU generation and family ✪ What is the difference between CPU generations

What is CPU family? Processor family is the collection of all the processors which are built using same technology of manufacturing processes.Processors are grouped into families. Processors within a given family generally have similar feature sets. The generation signifies some of the processor’s attributes, such as when it was released, the size of the transistors used, cache type.

We offer you all the information about the generation of a AMD Ryzen 7 6800U CPU, the segment of usage (computer, server or mobile type), the preceding model of a CPU, and its successor. Also consider the following:

  1. Is the higher generation the better on a CPU?
  2. Is CPU generation important?
  3. What is the current CPU processor`s generation?
  4. What is a CPU family?

Each processor name has a brand, brand modifier, generation, SKU, and product line. Once you know what each of those mean, you can identify if you need to buy AMD Ryzen 7 6800U.

Specifications

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 6800U, Zen 3+ framework / 8 cores, 16 threads / 4.7 Ghz single core max frequency
  • Graphics: AMD Radeon 680M / RDNA 2 graphics framework 12 graphics cores / 2200 MHz graphics frequencyRAM: 16GB / 32GB

Gogamegeek sent me the 512GB version with 16GB Ram, which is listed on their website at $779.99 with free world wide shipping. It took around 4 days for me to receive the A1.

Specs wise as you can see it’s no slouch. And easily beats the SteamDeck is almost every area. I already own the SteamDeck and I can honestly say, the AOKZOE A1 easily beats the SteamDeck when it comes to performance and image quality. But lets not jump ahead of ourselves too fast.

Gaming Performance of AOKZOE A1 Pro

Performance benchmarks are one thing, and gaming performance is another. Well, the AOKZOE A1 Pro is a beast in terms of gaming too. You can easily get 55 to 60 FPS in almost all modern gaming titles. To be exact, the handheld can even play Cyberpunk 2077!

Gaming Performance

All in all, it’s clear that AMD is in control of the entire handheld gaming market. Now, we just need to see more handhelds such as AOKZOE A1 Pro to come out that challenge the Steam Deck in terms of pricing.

The AOKZOE A1 Specs and Model I’m Using

Before going into my review, I want first to go over the device’s specs and the model this review is based on. This 11 x 5 7/8 x 1 inch device (Width x Height x Thickness) is packed with power and the battery to make it last. The AOKZOE A1 uses an AMD 6800U APU, which utilizes the Zen 3 architecture mixed with the RDNA 2 graphics framework. The APU has eight cores with 16 threads and 12 graphics cores to power it. It may not be the most recent APU, 7840U, but it works well and is still more powerful than the Steam Deck (Zen 2 with four cores and eight threads with 8 RDNA 2 graphics cores).

The device can have either 16gb or 32gb of LPDDR5 RAM running at 6400MHz. The joysticks and triggers are analog, the battery is a massive 65Wh, and it has a 6-axis sensor for gyro controls. The screen is huge, coming in at 8-inches, and has a resolution of 1920×1200, a brightness of 350nits, and covers 100% sRGB color space. The device weighs around 729g, about 60g heavier than the Steam Deck.

There are also two colors, Blue and White. I have the blue color, but it looks like a darkish purple more than a blue.

It also comes with a power adapter and USB-C to USB-C cable to charge, all in a nice green and black packaging.

Ports

As for the ports, the AOKZOE A1 has two USB-C ports, one at the top and one at the bottom, a 3.5mm audio jack at the top, and a MicroSD card slot at the bottom. The device also has a USB-A 3.0 slot at the top, which I find an excellent addition. I love having two USB-C ports to choose which I want to charge in different positions comfortably, but the USB-A port allows me to plug in a USB stick or a dongle to use my wireless keyboard and mouse. Instead of relying on an external device or dock, this device comes in handy, especially when using the stand in the back to make a desktop-like workstation without extra equipment.

Which Configuration I am Using

When purchasing an AOKZOE A1, you can choose between different configurations. There is a 16gb RAM with 512gb SSD, a 32gb RAM with 1tb SSD, and a 32gb RAM with 2tb SSD. I was sent the former model with 16gb RAM and a 512gb SSD. While the extra RAM is helpful, I am glad this is the one I was sent because it is the most competitive pricing with the Steam Deck and is the one I would look at when deciding between the two.

And with that out of the way, let’s get into the review.

PCWorld

The AOKZOE A1 will debut next month at an unknown date on Kickstarter. However, the company has wasted no time creating several videos on their YouTube channel, showcasing their prototype unit in action. In several videos, the AOKZOE A1 has offered a slightly higher FPS performance compared to the Onexplayer Mini recently reviewed. Games like Elden Ring, Forza 5, Red Dead Redemption 2, and Cyberpunk 2077 have been displayed on their channel, showing consumers the difference between in-game settings and the power of the AMD Ryzen 7 6800U processor. Elden Ring demonstrates 60 frames per second, and the fully-optimized game Forza 5 (which we described offered the best performance of all the games tested) showed a stunning 100 frames per second in the official videos from the company.

The new handheld from AOKZOE A1 will show compatibility for Windows 11 and Valve’s SteamOS, opening up the amount of AAA titles to retro games for any player level. Inside the AOKZOE A1, the cooling system used is pure aluminum fins and copper heat pipes, as well as intelligent temperature control to offer stunning heat dissipation throughout the device. Whether the company provides an application or sensor to notate the times to cool the system more adequately is unknown.

The display on the AOKZOE A1 is an 8-inch Full-HD IPS display offering 1920 x 1200 resolution. The company did not provide any other display sizes after in-house testing showed that the 8-inch display produced superior gaming balance and visual quality in most titles—pixel density on the new handheld peaks at 283 PPI. The new handheld weighs in at 668g, similar to the current 7-inch Steam Deck system.

One offering from the AOKZOE A1 is that the company offers customizable RGB lights that breathe while in use. There are three modes and twenty different lighting effects to immerse gamers into any possible gaming experience — another feature not offered by any top handheld gaming console designers.

The system includes haptic vibration, a responsive gyroscope, and linear triggers. It is widely believed that the ability to tilt your gaming controller or handheld system allows for ultimate aiming capability. At the same time, other gamers will typically turn those features off to preserve battery life.

Designwise, the system is similar to the Onexplayer Mini and other Onexplayer consoles, offering similar keyboard hotkey, screen minimizing, and action buttons to jump into game settings anytime. The most significant difference in the system from what the Onexplayer Mini AMD 5800U edition offers is the kickstand that One Notebook removed from their recent designs.

2 of 9

The new system offers fast charging to enable gamers to come back into the game at a quicker time frame than having to wait longer. It is speculated that the system will also support AC-connected playing while it is charging, but it has not been verified as of yet.

Features of the AOKZOE A1:

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen7 6800U
  • Graphics: Radeon 680M Graphics card
  • RAM: LPDDR5X (Frequency 6400) 16GB/32GB
  • Screen: 8-inch full lamination FHD IPS screen, 1920*1200 resolution
  • Battery: 48Wh for the standard version, 65Wh for the ultimate version

AMD Ryzen 7 6800H против Intel Core i7-12700H

AMD Ryzen 7 6800H?

Alder Lake.

Price and availability

The Aokzoe A1 is a powerful little machine, but its price packs just as much of a punch. Here are the MSRPs for each of the different versions:

  • 16GB+512GB – $1,079
  • 16GB+1TB – $1,219
  • 16GB+2TB – £1,399
  • 32GB+1TB – $1,529
  • 32GB+2TB – $1,529

Since Aokzoe released the new Pro handheld, the different versions of the Aokzoe A1 have been on sale for 20-25% off, slashing the top version down to $1,259 and the cheaper version down to $859. This puts it in a much more affordable bracket, and you can sometimes snag a refurbished unit even cheaper.

However, with its main competitor, the Asus ROG Ally starting at as little as $599, and the less-powerful but less-fiddly Steam Deck going for even less, it’s got some pretty stiff competition when it comes to price and affordability.

In terms of availability, you can purchase the Aokzoe A1 from the company’s official website or Amazon. Aokzoe ships worldwide, either through expedited shipping (FEDEX, DHL, USPS, etc) in about 7-10 business days or standard shipping (airmail, priority mail, etc) in about 15-25 business days.

From our experience, the product ships from a warehouse in China, so you may be liable to pay customs on arrival, though reviews seem to be mixed on this. There are also mixed reviews on customer support if something goes wrong with your console, with some people attesting to the fact that they had their units fixed or replacements sent out quickly, while others say they received little communication and support.

OS

The Aokzoe A1 runs on a full PC version of Windows. This means it’s a little more fiddly than handhelds like the Nintendo Switch or the Steam Deck, which come with their own operating systems pre-installed, but it also gives you more flexibility. It takes a bit of time to set up initially and comes with the usual Windows bloat. However, with help from the handy keyboard button and a bit of patience, it pays off in the end, and the overall out-of-the-box experience isn’t too bad at all.

After that, you’re free to install any launchers you like. As indicated in the performance section, that includes Steam, Epic Games Store, and Xbox (yes, you can access Xbox PC Games Pass through this). You can also download individual launchers for games like Genshin Impact, Honkai Star Rail, Final Fantasy XIV, Overwatch, and World of Warcraft, as well as any browser you like.

Due to its Windows PC install, it can do just about anything a laptop or desktop computer can, including browsing the web, watching videos on YouTube, streaming movies and TV on Netflix, or even noting down ideas for that novel you’ve always been meaning to write in Word or Notepad – though you may want to invest in a mobile keyboard if you fancy the latter, as the Windows native on-screen keyboard is a bit clunky, and you can’t re-program the button to switch to the alternate accessibility keyboard.

The Aokzoe also has Bluetooth support, and you can connect to and manage your Bluetooth devices (controllers, headphones, etc) through the usual Windows Bluetooth & Devices menu. Its connectivity is reliable, and I often use my wireless earbuds while playing.

Steam Deck

Verdict

Okay, so after spending so much time with the Aokzoe A1, what’s the outcome? Would I recommend it as a solid portable gaming console? Well, yes and no.

Overall, it’s an impressively powerful little device that can handle a wide range of games, and offers a lot more flexibility that competitors like the Steam Deck and the Switch due to its PC Windows OS that allows you to download any launchers you want rather than being tied to Steam or the Nintendo eShop. It can also run most games pretty darn well, especially with the easy-to-access Aokzoe overlay that allows you to change the power output.

However, it does struggle to stand up against its more direct competition, especially considering its steep price – even on sale. The ASUS Rog Ally does fall behind in some areas, but beats the Aokzoe A1 in others, all for a much cheaper price. Even Aokzoe itself has now brought out the A1’s predecessor, the Aokzoe A1 Pro, which is very close to the A1’s MRSP and seems to iron out a lot of the kinks.

With its impressive graphics card, customizable settings, and ability to run some taxing games pretty well, it does make for a strong portable console. However, with its mediocre screen, uncomfortable grips, short battery life, and tendency to run hot, I struggle to say it’s worth full price.

If you can find it at a heavy discount, it’s definitely worth a try – especially if you’re interested in tech and hardware and want to play around with it firsthand. But if you’re looking for a comfortable handheld that gives you plenty of bang for your buck, perhaps look to its competitors or successor.

Right, I’m off to play some more Resident Evil 4 Remake on every console that runs it.
