De här grafikkorten bör klara av alla nuvarande spel med acceptabel bildfrekvens, men inte nödvändigtvis med höga inställningar. Särskilt krävande spel kanske bara fungerar med låga inställningar. Till skillnad från prestandakorten hittar man däremot de här grafikkorten i bärbara datorer av lite mindre format med bättre batteritid.

Mid-range grafikkort för bärbara datorer baserat på Ada Lovelace-arkitekturen. Erbjuder 6 GB GDDR6 (96 bitar) och är konfigurerbar med en TGP på 35 — 115W (+ Dynamic Boost).

De här grafikkorten levererar bäst 3D-prestanda för bärbara datorer. De kan hantera alla nya spel i hög upplösning och ofta med avancerade inställningar. Däremot är strömförbrukningen hög, så batteritiden blir lidande (med undantag för bärbara datorer med växlingsbar grafik). Som regel hittar man bara de här GPU:erna i större laptops.

The competition

Well, err, other than other Clevo vendors that offer the same chassis, there’s no real competition for now from Intel. As a reminder, the XMG Apex 15 costs under €2,700 ($3,054) including tax and shipping (in the EU) with the current configuration with the processor accounting for nearly a third of the price.

Go overboard with 8TB of storage (dual 2TB Seagate Firecuda 510 with a 4TB 860 QVO SSD), 64GB of RAM and a three year premium warranty and you’d still only manage to add another €1,500 ($1,697) and that’s not a lot. We dare even say that it is a (relative) bargain, one made even better by the fact that you can order the laptop without Windows, saving you a few more Euros.

Deze middenklasse grafische kaarten kunnen alle huidige spellen vloeiend spelen. Veeleisende spellen kunnen alleen met gemiddelde detail instellingen gespeeld worden.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 Mobile:

De mobile GTX 1070 is gebaseerd op de GP106-chip en biedt 1280 shaders. Vergeleken met de identiek genaamde desktop-versie heeft de kaart een iets lagere kloksnelheid. Games zouden vloeiend speelbaar moeten zijn met deze kaart in Full-HD en met maximale detailinstellingen.

High-end grafische kaart voor laptops gebaseerd op de TU106-chip met 2304 shaders en 8 GB GDDR6-VRAM. In vergelijking met de desktop-variant is de GPU lager geklokt.

Games Average

This graph shows how much faster or slower Intel was in each game at 1080p

AMD’s Ryzen 7 7840HS outperformed Intel’s Core i7-13700H by an average of just 19.7% at 1080p across the five games that were tested. The best case Shadow of the Tomb Raider was 17.9% faster with Intel at the top, while Watch Dogs Legion was faster on AMD.

This graph shows how much faster or slower Intel was in each game at 1440p.

There is even less of a difference when using the higher 1440p resolution because more pixels typically use the GPU. Basically, it doesn’t really matter which of these CPUs you choose if you’re gaming at 1440p and higher.

This, in my opinion, makes it easier for us to quickly and easily see the overall differences visually. As we’ve been discussing, there aren’t any significant differences between these processors.

Gaming Benchmarks

When it comes to gaming, if you’ve tested both laptops across 5 games at 1080p and 1440p resolutions without using any upscaling.

Spider-Man Remastered

Let’s start out with Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered. Intel was ahead in both tests, with an 11% higher average FPS at 1080p, but then only a 2% lead at the higher 1440p resolution. That said, Intel still has better 1% lows, which means less dips in performance.

Watch Dogs: Legion

In Watch Dogs Legion, AMD took the lead. It performed better than Intel at both the standard and higher resolutions, not just in average speed but also in maintaining consistent performance with fewer dips.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider

Shadow of the Tomb Raider showed Intel’s strongest performance compared to AMD. Intel was 12% faster at 1080p and 11% faster at the 1440p, which was the biggest difference seen in the five games tested.

A Plague Tale: Requiem

A Plague Tale Requiem was a close match, but AMD edged out slightly, being 3 frames per second faster at the standard resolution. This was the second-largest lead that AMD had in these tests.

DOOM Eternal

Lastly, DOOM Eternal was another win for Intel, showing a 12% faster performance at 1080p and 8% faster at the 1440p, making it the second-best performance difference for Intel in these comparisons.

Отметим что моментами производительность компьютера ограничивала только скорость интернета:)

Так как нам этого не достаточно, обращаемся к старому доброму CPU-Z bench:

Вот с такими показателями он проходит тест и выдает полные параметры процессора:

Результатом мы довольны. Особенно в сравнении с другими моделями процессоров, которые программа считает конкурентами – их ценник кратно дороже нашего процессора Ryzen.

keyboard and trackpad

The APEX 17 has a classic German QWERTZ keyboard with a number pad. The latter is always a matter of taste.

In itself, however, the keyboard of the notebook is decent! The typing feel is precise and crisp and the stroke is good. I would say this is a “good+” keyboard for both gaming and typing.

Only the illumination of the keyboard is “unspectacular”. It does its job, but is nothing special.

However, I’m a bit torn when it comes to the trackpad. In itself, this is nice and big and feels quite good (the surface). But the tracking was a bit “jumpy” for me. The trackpad sometimes worked great, then suddenly the pointer made a small jump or registered a gesture.

Maybe it’s a driver problem, because I’m usually used to something better from XMG.

At the time of writing, the AMD model of the Lenovo Legion Slim 5i reviewed is priced at $1200 USD, maintaining identical specifications. In contrast, opting for the Intel variant incurs an additional $80. It’s important to note that prices can fluctuate significantly based on the specifications selected.

Currently, AMD appears to deliver superior cost-effectiveness, especially given the existing price points. Indeed, while the Intel version slightly outperforms in gaming, the margin does not justify an $80 premium. Moreover, when considering non-gaming tasks, such as the Cinebench 2024 multicore performance, AMD also demonstrates a more advantageous value proposition.

In multi-core performance, the Ryzen 7 7840HS takes a 13% lead, scoring 16916, outperforming the Ryzen 7 7840U’s score of 14936, demonstrating its superior multitasking capabilities.

While tackling single-core tasks, the Ryzen 7 7840U holds a slight 2% advantage, reaching a score of 1937, while the Ryzen 7 7840HS scores 1891, highlighting the former’s marginal lead in single-core processing.

When it comes to the realm of multitasking, the  Ryzen 7 7840HS maintains a significant 33% lead, scoring 13831, while Ryzen 7 7840U scores 10391, reinforcing its superior performance in handling parallel tasks.

Performance, hohe Powerlimits!

The heart of the XMG APEX 17 M23 is the AMD Ryzen 7 7735HS. The AMD Ryzen 7 7735HS is a top current 8 core CPU with up to 4.75 Ghz.

XMG relies on a TDP of 54W+! Usually this is a 35-45W CPU. Due to the higher maximum TDP, the Ryzen 7 7735HS can achieve a higher clock and thus more performance under full load.

To put it silly, the Ryzen 7 7735HS in the XMG APEX 17 M23 is faster than in many other notebooks with the same CPU.

In practice, I could even observe a CPU power consumption of 80W+ in “Overboost” mode, with a pure CPU load. Impressive!

On the GPU side, you have two models to choose from:

I would probably lean towards the RTX 4060 here, just because of the 8GB vs. 6GB VRAM. Here, too, we have quite high power limits with 115W.

First, let’s look at a few benchmarks.

This is where it gets exciting! Because there is an oddity. The APEX 17 performs particularly well in benchmarks that require high performance for a long time!

For example, in the rather short Cinebench 20 test, the notebook only came in 3rd place. In the long Cinebench 23 test (10 minutes constant load), it clearly came in 1st place!

The same with the Handbrake Video Encoding Test.

This means that the APEX 17 is also very exciting in terms of performance for video editing!

But how does it look in games?

Unsurprisingly very good! We easily exceeded the 60 FPS limit even in poorly optimized games like Assassin’s Creed Odyssey or demanding AAA games like Hogwarts Legacy.

In games like Overwatch or Diablo 4 we break the 100 FPS limit on ultra quality.

The APEX 17 M23 thus scratches the performance of RTX 3080 notebooks or can even surpass models with lower power limits! Impressive!

Final verdict

The XMG Apex 15 is built like a vintage supercar: very (very) noisy and not very economical petrol-wise but OMG, pedal to the floor, it can reach speeds that, only a decade ago would have landed it somewhere on the TOP500 list of supercomputers. And while we can complain about the battery life, one thing that did surprise us is the relatively affordable price especially when compared to comparable desktop solutions.

Improvements? We’d love to have bigger, hot swappable batteries on this desktop replacement monster. It is a bit of a travesty that the far lighter (and thinner) Clevo-based PC specialist Lafite Pro laptop we tested recently had a much bigger battery.

We’re keen on seeing an 8TB SSD drive offered as an option (like the new Samsung 870 QVO or the Sabrent Rocket Q 8TB) which would pave the way for a 24TB workstation. After all, why not? Idem for a potential upgrade route to the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER GPU, the fastest one around. Oh and do kill that lonely USB 2.0 port.

The XMG APEX 17 M23 in review

The APEX 17 is a big notebook! This shouldn’t come as a surprise with the 17-inch display, but making the APEX as “portable” as possible didn’t seem to have had top priority.

The notebook is 24.9 mm thick and weighs 2.47 kg.

This isn’t too thick or bulky, but there are definitely lighter and thinner notebooks out there with comparable performance on paper.

On the other hand, the notebook also appears to be built quite massively and stably. However, XMG uses its standard “design” here. We have a completely black notebook, which itself has a very clean design. While we do have a few more “flashy” edges and shapes, the APEX remains simple overall.

The largest part of the notebook is made of plastic, only the lid is made of metal.

The connections of the APEX 17 are distributed over three sides.
