Opening the Inspiron, the trackpad is centered in the chassis, with the keyboard lying nearly flat. It is backlit, white only. The display has almost no physical bezel, while a digital bezel does outline the panel. At the top is the camera, which does offer a privacy slider.

Peeling back the cover, the battery is a two-piece solution offering 54Wh. Up top, we have the motherboard, and single heat pipe cooling pushed to the left. The memory slots allow for upgrades to the DDR4 along with NVMe far left and Wi-Fi in the center.

In terms of performance, the Dell Inspiron 14 2-in-1 is quite impressive for the specs it has. In its benchmark tests, it compares to other similar 2-in-1 laptops that are much more expensive. Not only does it balance several tasks like video/voice calls, documents, streaming videos, and more without breaking a sweat, it can even run games such as Sid Meyer’s Civilization VI and maintain a stable frame rate of at least 30 FPS whether on high or low settings. So if you fancy being able to work or play, this is definitely a solid laptop.

When switching to tablet mode, the larger touchscreen really shines. The touch controls are a fully functional replacement for the keyboard and its responsiveness works well with nearly any application or game that supports touch in the first place. The HD screen also really shines here, as it displays colors vibrantly, especially useful for any projects or games that require that level of clarity. It’s a shame that it doesn’t come with a pen, as I feel that would be a great complement and would make it an even better work machine. 

It has a great webcam, 1080p HD and runs at a stable 30 FPS. Many laptops in its price range either don’t have one at all or have a shoddy 720p one that’s barely passable for work or school tasks. But the Dell Inspiron 14’s is nearly as clear as its normal display, and takes crystal clear pictures to boot. The sound quality is also nice and clear, which is a boon for online work meetings to ensure every word is heard and for any games or movies that require good sound to create an immersive experience. While it’s not winning any awards for being the best sound in a laptop, for a 2-in-1 it’s well developed and has more than enough depth for most tasks that need it.

Though the laptop hardly needs it since the Dell Inspiron 14 2-in-1 won’t be running anything particularly taxing, it still has a good solid ventilation system that keeps it from overheating. In fact, even when putting it through its paces during our benchmark or battery tests, it ran almost completely silent and with barely any generated warmth.

Although the XPS 13 9380’s design is exactly the same as the previous models of this series still this machine looks finely crafted machine with elegant aesthetics.

Its Anodized aluminum lid, carbon fiber deck, and sleek design gives this laptop a premium look and feel. XPS 13 9380 laptop has razor-thin bezels which make its display look extremely gorgeous and reduce the footprint.

The infamous nose came has been replaced with a tiny looking one place in the top bezel. To give XPS 13  a stealthy appearance Dell has added carbon fiber with a plush soft touch on the deck.

Dell XPS 13 9380 has 1.9 x 7.8 x 0.5 inches dimensions and it weighs almost 2.7 pounds. Which makes this a portable lightweight and easy to carry machine.

XPS 13 9380 is more compact than any of the other laptops under this budget.

Display 

Dell XPS 13 9380 offers 13.3 inches non-touch display with 1080p 4K resolution.  In our test, we were impressed by this laptop’s richly saturated, bright panel.

If you want to use this laptop outdoors then you must choose the matte panel configuration since the 4K display is very glossy.

The maximum brightness of Dell XPS measured at 382 nits, more than enough for the laptop of this size and specs.

For watching HD 4K movies and videos the display of Dell XPS 13 in one of the best, only the reflection of the screen can be bothering.

Performance Under Workload

With the 10th Gen Comet Lake processor, Dell XPS 13 provides you enough power to easily do your typical office work.

Its performance on different task during our test was considered good enough that we can suggest you this laptop.

It can keep its cool during intensive work and lite gaming for a decent amount of time. After that, it is not like this laptop starts heating up badly but you do start feeling the touchpad and the center portion is getting warm.

We continuously did web surfing and at 150 nits during our battery test, Dell XPS 13 lasted almost 8 hours before giving the battery low notification.

The Dell BIOS offers a solid amount of configuration apart from overclocking controls. Starting from the first menu, we have hardware information, including CPU, memory, and Dell-specific information.

You can then move into boot manager to handle how the machine loads up and integrate the device to manage things like the camera, audio, and Thunderbolt configuration. Further down the menu system, you will find options for NVMe storage config alongside Wi-Fi and wireless radio controls.

Software

The software is My Dell; this includes support and warranty control and options for configuring presence detection, audio, and power.

Ход клавиш очень большой для ноутбука, что позволяет отчетливо чувствовать момент срабатывания кнопки (поэтому у нас больше контроля над действиями). При этом клавиши достаточно мягкие и даже долгие часы игры/набора текста не должны утомлять. Дело в тачпаде совсем другое — нажатие на него требует гораздо большего давления, чем обычно. Трекпад, как правило, довольно среднего размера, но не настолько мал, чтобы его было сложно использовать. Он хорошо работает как инструмент для работы в полевых условиях или для экстренного использования компьютера.

Однако самое большое зрелище — это работа подсветки — причем не только клавиатуры, но и всей передней панели, на которой размещена полоса ARGB, предлагающая полностью плавные переходы между всеми цветами радуги. Конечно, можно синхронизировать подсветку клавиш и полоски и придать им любую схему подсветки, в том числе и статичный цвет (или отключить совсем).

Такое высокое разрешение делает изображение кристально четким, так что на нем можно разместить больше панелей инструментов, сохраняя при этом их надлежащую читаемость. Обновление 240 Гц в этом разрешении до сих пор было прерогативой самых быстрых мониторов для игроков. Тем более, что время отклика панели (в среднем 4,5 мс) позволяет использовать такое обновление — на практике, если бы такая панель продавалась как монитор, она непременно получила бы маркировку «1 мс».

В плане качества изображения новому Raider тоже есть чем гордиться. Он не только покрывает 100% гаммы sRGB, но и превышает 80% охвата пленки DCI-P3. Возможно, это не рекордные результаты, но для игр это практически все, что вам нужно.

MSI в своем приложении позволяет выбирать между несколькими профилями изображения (аналогично настольным мониторам), но мы также можем вручную настраивать параметры изображения, такие как температура или гамма — это большая и долгожданная новинка! Можно даже подключить колориметр для калибровки к собственному профилю, хотя заводская калибровка и так на удивление хороша — без измерительного оборудования сложно найти отклонения от стандартных цветов.

With value, we take the notebook’s performance in several testing areas and put it against the cost at the time of writing. The Inspiron 14 does remarkably well, scoring 98.4% and second to the Ideapad Flex.

Final Thoughts

I have to be honest. I never used an Inspiron platform until this unit landed on my doorstep. Being a 2-in-1, I had an idea of what the notebook would offer, and based on the platform and previous experience with the Ideapad Flex, I had an idea of where the performance would land too. What I wasn’t expecting was a high-quality keyboard and touchpad that seemed like they were meant for the XPS lineup, not the entry-level Inspiron 14.

The keyboard’s feel is nearly Thinkpad X1-level quality, and it has a fantastic return on each key and perfect ambiance from the backlighting. The trackpad is very smooth with a low tactile click, not perfect, but certainly better than many platforms that run through the lab.

The performance of this system was hit and miss. I did expect the 1255U to outperform the 1235U in the Ideapad, but thermals play a huge role in getting the best performance out of a system, especially when it’s low profile. For the Inspiron, it appears it could use a better thermal solution, as the CPU could not maintain its peak boost for any length of time, allowing the weaker 1235U to do better in most scenarios. The Inspiron 14 can be configured with the 1235U, possibly for a more efficient overall build.

Pricing is always hard to justify, though in the month I have had the Inspiron 14 on my desk, Dell.com has dropped the price to $849.99 a few times. So if you are in the market for a 2-in-1 and are looking at the Inspiron, it’s only a matter of time before the price drops again. With that, the Inspiron is one of the better overall value notebooks. Based on its performance in office, photo, and video workloads, it’s second only to the Ideapad Flex.

If bought during a price drop, it’s likely the best of the two platforms.

What we don’t like

This is ultimately the Inspiron 14’s downfall. In laptop mode, it is frankly exhausting to use. The trackpad is anything but responsive, often requiring immense pressure or second taps to register a single click. While the QWERTY keyboard is ultra quiet, the deeper travel required and smaller keys create a ripe environment for fatigue, making it more suitable for shorter typing sessions.

Those who hope to take their laptop on the go might resent the Inspiron 14’s size and weight. At 3.59 pounds, this device is far from the 3-and-under “ultra-portable” range. It’s also 0.7 inches thick when closed, landing it closer to a chunkier gaming laptop on the size scale. The Inspiron 14 7420 physically feels like something you would have found at Best Buy a decade ago.

Mid-tier battery life

If a laptop is going to be this heavy and difficult to use, it’d better boast a pretty impressive battery life. Unfortunately, the Inspiron 14 7420 doesn’t.
We tested this device’s battery life by rapidly rotating through 20 browser tabs at 200 nits screen brightness to simulate heavy web use. In the end, the Inspiron 14’s 4-cell, 54Wh battery will give you just over seven hours on a full charge. While that might be enough to get you through a few classes or an easier workday, it puts the Inspiron 14 toward the bottom of our battery life ranking.

Poor heat management

The Inspiron 14 is one of the hottest non-gaming laptops we’ve ever tested. After just 20 minutes of intense productivity testing, the lower clamshell—the part of the chassis that rests on your lap—reached 42.11 degrees Celsius (107.79 degrees Fahrenheit). Not only would that be unbearable on bare legs, but it’s disappointing for a productivity laptop at this price point. If you plan on using your laptop in true laptop mode, this might not be the pick for you.

In the same vein, it’s worth mentioning that the Inspiron 14 abruptly restarted twice during testing. Both occurrences were during light productivity tasks (one being while we wrote this review) and both involved the dreaded Windows “blue screen of death” followed by some noisy fan acceleration. Whether CPU heat or other variables prompted these restarts is unclear, but it makes the Inspiron 14 feel a bit unreliable.
