Dell XPS 15: Webcam, microphone, biometrics

A meager 720p webcam squeezes into the XPS 15’s tiny top bezel. Sticking with 720p prevents the need for a webcam cut-out or larger bezel but comes at the cost of a fuzzy, ill-defined image. It’s ok for video calls but will never help you look your best.

The dual-array microphone is better, recording clear, clean dialogue that’s easy for listeners to understand. Audio quality remains rather tinny, however. Noise cancellation is included and effective, removing repetitive sounds of modest volume with no ill effects.

A fingerprint reader is provided on the power button for quick biometric login. It works as well as any Windows fingerprint reader I’ve tried—which is to say it usually works but can have trouble if your finger is dirty, wet, or placed at an odd angle. Windows Hello facial recognition is also available and much more reliable, as it works in both light and dark conditions and can be set up to recognize you with or without glasses.

Dell XPS 15 9530 RTX 4070 performance

Dell XPS 15 9530 RTX 4070 is hardly a leader in performance, but Intel Core i7-13700H performs one hundred percent and fully meets expectations. You will notice occasional system slowdowns only if you are used to powerful multi-core desktop computers. For a portable computer, this performance is more than sufficient. Speaking of numbers, in the PCMark 10 test Dell XPS 15 9530 RTX 4070 scored about 7200 points.

The graphics subsystem represented by NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Laptop GPU is perfectly average and perfectly complements Intel Core i7-13700H. In the 3DMark 11 test, the laptop Dell XPS 15 9530 RTX 4070 scores around 22200 points.

Webcam on the Dell XPS 15 (9530)

The webcam is another area where we wish Dell had improved compared to the previous generation. Unfortunately, we’re stuck with the same underperforming 720p webcam that is outclassed by the 1080p units in the competition.

The camera is low on detail and color representation. My face looked muddy, and there was a weird outline drawn around my head, almost as if someone had sketched around it with a pencil. The overall image is grainy and objects in the background could be clearer.

With a price tag of $2,799 as configured (and even starting at $2,249), Dell really should put a much better camera in the XPS 15. This is the second year we’ve complained about this “miss.” Hopefully, Dell will address this with the next model.

Dell XPS 15: Keyboard, trackpad, pen

binary comment

IDG / Matthew Smith

The Dell XPS 15 has a spacious keyboard with a centered layout. I found it immediately familiar and had plenty of room to maneuver while typing at high speeds. The centered layout ditches the numpad, however, which may bother those aiming to compete in the Microsoft Excel Championship (really, it’s a thing).

Key feel is good but unremarkable with reasonable key travel and a timid bottoming action that provides only a hint of tactile feedback. It’s similar to an Apple MacBook Pro 16 and a touch improved over Razer’s Blade 16, but can’t beat Lenovo laptops like the Slim Pro 7. Keyboard backlighting is standard and does the job with little fuss.

Dell’s spacious touchpad measures about six inches wide and three inches deep. That’s large for any laptop and makes maximum use of the spacious interior. The touchpad is responsive and easily handles multitouch gestures but occasionally picks up unintended inputs when typing. Even so, it’s a good touchpad and comfortable to use for hours on end.

Dell XPS 15 (9530) speakers

The Dell XPS 15 is equipped with two 2.5-watt woofers and two 1.5-watt tweeters, designed to deliver balanced audio output for multimedia consumption. The speakers sound fine, but they don’t exactly shine when compared to dedicated external speakers or higher-end laptop audio systems. They’re certainly adequate for casual listening, like watching YouTube videos or listening to podcasts.

Image source: Christian de Looper for BGR

However, for any audiophile activities, such as critically listening to music or engaging in professional audio work, users will likely want to opt for a good pair of external speakers or headphones. The laptop’s built-in speakers simply don’t deliver the depth or precision that a dedicated audio setup can provide. That said, they do have a substantial volume output. The speakers get loud enough to fill a medium-sized room, which is great for impromptu presentations or when you want to watch a movie without using headphones. Overall, the speakers are functional and appropriate for most casual uses, but they won’t blow away any audiophiles.

Dell XPS 15: Specs and features

The 2023 Dell XPS 15 leaps to Intel’s 13th-gen Core processors and Nvidia’s RTX 40-series graphics. The top-tier GPU is kicked up two rungs from the RTX 3050 Ti in the outgoing model to the RTX 4070 in the new XPS 15.

  • CPU: Intel Core i7-13700H
  • Memory: 32GB LPDDR5
  • Graphics/GPU: Nvidia RTX 4070 (40-watt TGP)
  • Display: 15.6-inch 3.5K OLED
  • Storage: 1TB PCIe Gen4 SSD
  • Webcam: 720p
  • Connectivity: 2x Thunderbolt 4 / USB-C with Power Delivery and DisplayPort Alternate Mode, 1x USB-C with Power Delivery and DisplayPort Alternate Mode, 1x SDcard reader, 1x 3.5mm combo audio
  • Networking: WiFi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3
  • Biometrics: Windows Hello fingerprint, facial recognition
  • Battery capacity: 86 watt-hours
  • Dimensions: 13.57 x 9.06 x 0.71 inches
  • Weight: 4.21 pounds
  • MSRP: $2,799 as-tested ($1,499 base)

The review configuration, which included the top-tier GPU and upgraded OLED display, rang up at $2,799. Base models are more affordable, however, with an MSRP of just $1,499. That drops the graphics to Intel’s Arc A370 and the display to a 1080p IPS screen, but you still receive an Intel Core i7-13700H processor, 16GB of RAM, and a 512GB solid state drive.

Dell XPS 15 9530 RTX 4070 specs

Dell XPS 15 9530 RTX 4070 is based on 14-cores CPU Intel Core i7-13700H. NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Laptop GPU is responsible for the graphics. Add to the CPU power 50 W of graphics adapter, and at maximum performance you can only work fully from the power supply.

Dell XPS 15 9530 RTX 4070 has 32 GB 2-channel RAM DDR5. This is enough not only for the most modern games, but also for video editing and other resource-intensive activities.

In our configuration, a fast SSD SK hynix PC801 HFS001TEJ9X101N with a volume of 1024 GB is presented as storage. The SSD capacity is enough for most everyday tasks, including games.

Display on the Dell XPS (9530)

The XPS 15 uses a 15.6-inch 60 Hz OLED touchscreen, just like its predecessor. 16:10 aspect ratio displays are becoming more popular among gaming and productivity laptops, and Dell goes that route here with a 3456 x 2160 resolution.

OLED panels excel in their unmatched contrast, delivering inky blacks and rich colors; that is no exception with the XPS 15. Interestingly, the numbers we recorded for the XPS 15 differed significantly (for the better) from the previous generation model. Perhaps Dell switched to a new vendor? The Dell covered 137.9% of the DCI-P3 color gamut and 195% of sRGB. The older XPS 15 (9520) yielded 86.9 percent and 123 percent, respectively.

Brightness digressed year-over-year slightly to 371 nits, but it’s not a difference that you’d notice with the naked eye in everyday use. However, the MacBook Pro was the brightness champ in this group at 453 nits. I had no issue with brightness inside a well-lit home office or outside in partly cloudy conditions.

One of the first things that struck me about the display is how black the blacks are. This became readily apparent when I went to YouTube, and the user interface was locked in dark mode. Even with the brightness cranked to the maximum setting, the way that the white text and video thumbnails “popped” on the YouTube home screen was jarring (in a good way).

As a car nut, the first video I queued up was Throttle House’s review of the. The vibrant colors extended to the foliage and natural vistas in the background of the driving footage and the brilliant blue skies. But the display really put the “arrest me red” color of the M2 at the forefront. And even though the car itself is hideous, your eyes are immediately drawn to the glorious shade of red.

A somewhat lazy update

As I’ve mentioned throughout this review, there’s much to like about the XPS 15 (9530)’s design. It’s still sleek and modern enough that newer 15-inch laptops don’t eclipse it, but even so, it’s starting to feel a little dated. Certainly, you can’t fault the build quality.

But the CPU upgrade was underwhelming, providing minimal performance improvement — unlike the XPS 15 (9520), which was a big jump over its previous generation. It’s only the addition of the RTX 4070 option that gives the XPS 15 (9530) a meaningful boost in performance, and even there, it’s less than it might be due to the GPU running close to its minimal power specification. Toss in an old-school 720p webcam and Wi-Fi 6, and this year’s XPS 15 lacks some of the cutting-edge feel it once had.

There will be more configurations available in time, including less expensive options, but for now, the cheapest XPS 15 (9530) you can buy is $2,250 for a Core i7-13700H CPU, 16GB of RAM, a 512GB SSD, an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060 CPU, and a 15.6-inch Full HD+ IPS display. The highest-end machine has a $4,649 price tag for a Core i9-13900H, 64GB of RAM, two 4TB SSDs for a total of 8TB of storage, an RTX 4070, and a 15.6-inch 3.5K OLED panel. My review unit costs $2,800 for a Core i7, 32GB of RAM, a 1TB SSD, an RTX 4070, and the OLED display.

You can still buy the XPS 15 (9520) at a price as low as $1,100 for a Core i7-12700H, 8GB of RAM, a 512GB SSD, Intel UHD graphics, and a 15.6-inch Full HD+ IPS display. You can spend $2,100 for a Core i7-12700H, 16G of RAM, a 1GB SSD, an RTX 3050 Ti, and the OLED display.

As we’ll see, the XPS 15 (9530)’s performance bump alone may not be able to justify the $700 increase in price, and so unless you just have to have the fastest GPU performance in an XPS 15, you could opt for the older model and save some serious cash.

Battery Life on the Dell XPS 15 (9530)

Battery life has been a relative strength for XPS 15 laptops in the past, and that continues with the XPS 15. We run a workload that combines web browsing, video streaming, and OpenGL tests with the display brightness dialed in at 150 nits.

The XPS 15 lasted nine hours and 12 minutes during the test, half an hour shorter than the preceding XPS 15 (9520). The Galaxy Book 3 Ultra came in last place at nine hours and three minutes, while the MacBook Pro was the battery life champion at 14 hours and 21 minutes. Apple is unmatched in the battery life sphere thanks to its M2 SoC, which is even more efficient than its M1-based predecessors.

Dell XPS 15 (9530): Keyboard and touchpad

Dell XPS 15 (9530) trackpad. (Image credit: Rebecca Spear / Windows Central)

There really are only good things to say here. The touchpad feels huge, allowing me to quickly navigate the cursor wherever I want without having to lift and swipe repeatedly and without compromising keyboard space. The keys themselves are perfectly situated in relation to each other, and all press down in a satisfying way.

The keys are also backlit, and there’s an easy access button above the number keys for adjusting the brightness or turning the backlight off entirely. Additionally, a key located all the way to the right on the top row functions as both a power button and fingerprint reader as long as you take the time to set it up. This worked well and didn’t give me any issues when I wanted to use it.

The same spectacular OLED display

Mark Coppock/Digital Trends

I reviewed the XPS 15 (9530) with the 3.5K OLED display, and it’s just as awesome as before. It’s not terribly bright at 385 nits (many recent premium laptops exceed 400 nits), but its contrast is incredibly deep at 24,850:1, and its colors are wide at 100% of sRGB, 96% of AdobeRGB, and 100% of DCI-P3. Color accuracy is a bit above the Delta-E of 1.0 or less that creators want to see, at 1.31, but it’s still good enough for most creative work.

It appears to be the same exact panel used on last year’s XPS 15, and that’s a good choice. It’s more than sharp enough and provides the colors and contrast to please productivity users, creators, and media consumers alike. The lack of a higher refresh rate is a shame, though. We’re starting to see more and more OLED and mini-LED panels with higher refresh rates, which would have made this an even better laptop for gaming.

The audio is also the same as before, with two 2.5-watt woofers and two 1.5W tweeters that put out some of the best sound in a Windows machine. It’s not as full and doesn’t have the bass of Apple MacBook Pro machines, but the XPS 15 (9530) is great for streaming video and music without resorting to headphones.

Design of the Dell XPS 15 (9530)

If the new Dell XPS 15 (9530) looks familiar, it’s because it uses the same chassis as last year’s model, right down to the carbon fiber weave on the palm rest flanking the large touchpad.

The chassis is constructed of aluminum with chamfered edges that are polished to a high sheen. Ultra-thin bezels on all sides surround the 15.6-inch 3.5K (3456 x 2160) InfinityEdge display. And if you look closely along the leading edge of the display lid, you’ll find two tiny holes along the chamfered edges – this is where you find the XPS 15’s dual-array microphones.

While Apple added ports (HDMI, SD slot) to its 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros after years of complaints from customers, Dell took the opposite approach with the XPS 15. There’s a single USB 3.2 Type-C port and an SD slot on the right side of the chassis. The left side of the chassis is home to two Thunderbolt 4 ports. Unfortunately, there’s no HDMI or Ethernet port, which is a sacrifice Dell is willing to make in the name of thinness. As a consolation prize, a small adapter with an integrated USB-C connector is included in the box, giving back one USB Type-A port and one HDMI port. Another thing to consider is that the XPS 15 charges via USB-C, so you’re down to two available ports when charging.

The XPS 15 weighs 4.23 pounds and measures 13.68 x 9.06 x 0.71 inches. In comparison, the 14-inch MacBook Pro weighs 3.5 pounds with dimensions of 12.31 x 8.71 x 0.61 inches, though that machine doesn’t have a discrete GPU. The slightly larger Samsung Galaxy Book 3 Ultra is lighter at 3.95 pounds and measures 13.99 x 9.86 x 0.65 inches, while the older XPS 15 (9520) is practically identical dimensionally to the new XPS 15 (9530).

Webcam and Fingerprint Reader

Regrettably, the XPS 15 2023 features a 720p webcam on their flagship device for the year. This resolution is less than impressive, especially when compared to other manufacturers like HP, which offers 1440p cameras on certain Dragonfly models, or at least a 1080p resolution. Lenovo has also been incorporating higher-resolution webcams into their devices. The absence of such upgrades on the XPS line, particularly for their flagship consumer devices, is a bit disappointing.

Nevertheless, despite being a 720p camera, it performs reasonably well for activities such as Skype calls, Zoom meetings, or remote work. Additionally, the Dell XPS 15 comes equipped with an IR camera, enabling facial recognition logins—a convenient feature. Furthermore, the power button serves a dual purpose as a fingerprint scanner, providing an additional option for secure logins through Windows Hello.
