Productivity Performance of Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 (9310)
The Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 is the first Evo-certified Dell convertible, which means it packs a Tiger Lake i7-1165G7 chip and has a number of mobile optimizations such as greater than 9 hours of battery life and the ability to wake from sleep in less than 1 second. The laptop’s Evo features held up in our testing, but even beyond that, it was able to excel against other i7-1165G7 laptops like the nonconvertible XPS 13, the ZenBook Flip S and the ZenBook 13 in most tests.

In Geekbench, which tests general system performance, the 2-in-1 snagged 5,571 points, more than any other contender. The nonconvertible XPS 13 was the closest, with a score of 5,254 points, while the Zenbook 13 was next with 5,084 points and the ZenBook Flip S lagged behind with 3,880 points.
Both of Dell’s recent XPS options lagged behind on file transfer speeds, though. The 2-in-1 transferred 4.97GB of files at a rate of 503.1 MBps, while its nonconvertible cousin was faster at 806.2 MBps. But both Dells lagged behind Asus’ machines, as the ZenBook Flip S was much speedier at 1,297.2 MBps and the ZenBook 13 was respectable at 966.8 MBps.
However, video editing once again put the 2-in-1 in the spotlight. On our Handbrake video editing benchmark, which tests how long it takes a computer to transcode a video down from 4K to FHD, the XPS 13 2-in-1 was easily the fastest computer we tested, with a time of 15:52. The next quickest contender was the ZenBook 13, with a time of 17:51, while the nonconvertible XPS 13 had a time of 18:22 and the Flip S was the slowest with a time of 22:05.
New to Intel’s Tiger Lake chips are Intel Iris Xe integrated graphics, which we tested using 3DMark’s Fire Strike benchmark. The ZenBook 13 performed best here, with a score of 4,407, with the 2-in-1 coming in next with a score of 3,847. The nonconvertible XPS 13 and ZenBook Flip S rounded out the list with scores of 3,598 and 3,351 respectively.
If you’re curious how those numbers translate to games, we also played about a half hour of Overwatch on the XPS 13 2-in-1 at various settings. Despite some hiccups on the first try, the system ran mostly smoothly after a reboot. At 1920 x 1080, we were most comfortable playing on low settings, which tended to hover around 60 fps exactly and had the fewest drastic framerate drops. Medium settings will drop you down to 30-40 fps, but runs the risk of occasional dips into the 20s.
We also stress tested the XPS 13 2-in-1 by running it through Cinebench R20 on a loop 20 times. It started off with fairly strong performance at 2,056.3 points, before dropping off to an average of 1,584.8 points. During this benchmark, its CPU ran at an average clock speed of 2.53 GHz and had an average temperature of 60.3 degrees Celsius.

The Dell XPS line represents the pinnacle of Dell’s personal computing devices, and as such, every entry in the line should feature best-in-class design and build quality. The Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 (9315) delivers in spades and is genuinely one of the best-looking devices I’ve ever used.
I still enjoy the sleek lines and subtle curves of my impossibly thin, matte black Surface Pro X. Still, the XPS 13 2-in-1 is nearly as thin, even lighter, and meticulously crafted with a unibody aluminum chassis and a single pane of Gorilla Glass Victus. There’s no creaking, no unsightly seams, and absolutely nothing out of place. Just a series of perfectly placed hardware features complemented by subtly rounded squared edges and corners.
The XPS logo is tastefully emblazoned on the back, below a metal-ringed protruding rear camera and a single plastic line for the wireless antennas when using the tablet free of its folio encasing. The power button/fingerprint sensor combo takes up the position at the top right, while the split volume buttons sit opposite at the top left. Finishing off the design includes two centered USB Type-C Thunderbolt 4 ports on the left, dual speakers opposite each other on either end, a simple magnetized NFC pad at the top to charge the stylus, and pogo pins at the bottom to connect to the folio cover.

Everything about the XPS 13 2-in-1 oozes quality and class, and it’s both comfortable to use and fun to look at. I also have zero concerns about this device’s build quality or durability; the hardware is premium through and through. Up front, you have the 13″ display with sadly squared corners, bordered by perfectly symmetrical borders on all four sides. These bezels are big enough to provide a handhold in tablet mode but are still thin enough to pass modern standards. I think this symmetrical design also looks better than what Microsoft is doing with the latest Surface Pros and makes the tablet just as comfortable to use in landscape and portrait orientations.
When it comes to the build quality and design of the actual tablet, there’s very little to complain about. The Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 deserves to carry the XPS moniker and can go toe-to-toe with the best computers on this front.
Features
The Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 offers the benefit of a relatively featherweight design, at least for a 2-in-1. In return, it’s a bit of a lightweight when it comes to performance.
Under the bonnet, you’ve got the choice of a 12th Gen Intel Core i5 or i7 power plant, relying on the lower-powered U-series chips designed for “ultralight laptops and foldables”. It’s accompanied by 8 or 16 GB of LPDDR4x 4267 MHz RAM. By opting for some of Intel’s less demanding chips, Dell has curbed performance but allowed for a fanless cooling system.
You’re also relying on Intel Iris Xe Graphics, without the option of upgrading to a discrete graphics card.
When it comes to storage, you can choose between a 256 GB, 512 GB or 1TB M.2 PCIe NVMe solid-state drive. As for connectivity, you’ve got the Intel Killer Wi-Fi 6E 1675 (AX211) 2×2 chip along with Bluetooth 5.2 Wireless Card.
Of course, the real “killer” feature for many people is optional built-in 5G although, as you’d expect, it’s limited to the sub-6 GHz bands and can’t take advantage of the faster millimetre wave 5G networks which are gradually rolling out across the country.
There’s no physical SIM card slot, instead, you’re reliant on an e-SIM, which is convenient – especially if you travel – but might limit your choice of mobile telco.

Performance & Battery Life
Powered by Intel’s 11th generation processors, the XPS 13 9310 2-in-1 packs a lot of punch for the price. This is a 10nm processor, and on my Core i5 model, there are a total of 4 cores on board, with the processor running at the max frequency of 2.40 GHz. There’s also Intel’s new Iris Xe graphics on board here, too, which offers some advancements in the integrated GPU front. Just keep in mind the budget model has UHD graphics instead, so you will have to pay the $200 price to get Xe.
Anyway, I primarily use my laptop for work and light gaming. For this, the XPS does not disappoint. It was able to juggle 13 or so Edge tabs without issue, while also having Office open in the background. I also played some light games like CS: GO and Fortnite. Frames were limited in Fortnite to a playable 25 frames, but in older games like CS:GO, I definitely felt some good performance. Xe graphics make good gains for light gaming and older titles, but it isn’t for playing AAA games like Cyberpunk 2077. For that, you’ll need an eGPU.
Xe graphics also offer a boost for video editing, too. In Filmora Wondershare, the XPS punched out a 45 minute long 1080p, 30 frames per second podcast in about 23 minutes. That’s longer than my dedicated HP Envy 15 video editing machine (12 minutes,) but it’s still surprising for such a laptop of this class. See below for some sample results that are a testament to this.
One annoying thing with the XPS 13 is the fan and coil noise. If you end up taxing the processor too much, the fans will kick in to cool down the CPU. You can hear the fans while sitting about 2 feet away from the screen. I guess it is a good thing, though, as Dell has put thought into keeping the device cool. They have separated dual fans to cover more area, internal vapor chamber, and hidden exhaust venting. I never felt the XPS heat up except when I’m doing demanding tasks like video editing.
For battery life, I got to roughly 10-11 hours of mixed usage on a single charge. One charge was enough to get me through my entire day of work, with some juice leftover. I definitely feel confident enough to leave my charger at home if I were to travel with my XPS on the road.
Nice display quality, not as good for inking

The XPS 13 2-in-1 has a slightly smaller screen than the Surface Pro 9, at 13.0 inches versus 13.3 inches, and its resolution is the same at 2880 x 1920. That makes Dell’s display slightly sharper. The XPS 13 2-in-1’s IPS panel was brighter at 480 nits versus 409 nits, and it had much deeper contrast at 1,840:1 compared to 1,050:1. The colors were about as wide and just average for premium laptops, while accuracy was excellent at a DeltaE of 0.81 (less than 1.0 is suitable for professional work).
In terms of quality, then, the XPS 13 2-in-1’s display is better for productivity users and just as middling for creators who demand the widest color gamut. But its refresh rate is a pedestrian 60Hz, compared to the Surface Pro 9’s fluid 120Hz. And while Dell’s active pen is good and conveniently attaches magnetically to the top for charging, it doesn’t have the haptic feedback built into Microsoft’s Surface Slim Pen 2. Combined with the faster refresh rate, this feature makes the Surface Pro 9 a superior inking experience.

In terms of other multimedia aspects, the XPS 13 2-in-1 has an excellent 1080p front-facing camera and a 2160p rear-facing camera. There’s also an infrared camera for Windows 11 Hello passwordless login, like the Surface Pro 9, while the XPS 13 2-in-1 also includes a fingerprint reader. Two side-firing speakers provide serviceable audio.

With razor-like edges, tiny bezels and a gorgeous white-and-silver design, the new Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 is one of the most attractive laptops I’ve gotten my hands on — convertible or not.
The aluminum outer chassis has the slick, minimalist look I’ve come to expect from a Dell notebook, while opening the system up reveals a blast of striking arctic white, as if I just dove into a polar wonderland (there’s also a black variant available). The textured keyboard deck is a nice bonus, as is the pleasant soft-touch feel of the keys.

At 11.7 x 8.15 x 0.28-0.5 inches and 2.9 pounds, the XPS 13 2-in-1 is impressively slim for a convertible laptop, and it was light enough that I could carry it in my bag without much hassle. For context, the XPS is just a bit heavier than the standard XPS 13 and nearly as slim as top competitors such as the HP Spectre x360 and MacBook Air.
As its name suggests, the XPS 13 2-in-1 can be folded into tablet mode, propped up in tent mode or stood up in stand mode. I found transitioning between each mode easy, though the notebook feels a bit chunky when sandwiched into a tablet (as many 2-in-1s do). What I found most impressive is that the XPS 13 can convert into several modes without a huge, unsightly hinge at the center.

Да, Dell тоже перешла полностью на Type-C, но учитывая их многофункциональность (Thunderbolt 3 c поддержкой PowerShare, входным разъемом постоянного тока и интерфейсом DisplayPort), количество и наличие в комплекте переходника, это вполне простительно. Не понравилась мне в ноутбуке только довольно шумная и не самая эффективная система охлаждения (хотя в коммерческих образцах ситуация может быть и получше).
