Quest 3 vs Meta Quest Pro

Meta Quest Pro Uses a Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 Gen 1, which is less powerful than the XR2+ in Quest 3. So there is a performance upgrade on Quest 3, however Quest Pro is associated with business apps and connected with Presence Platform.

Quest Pro aims to be a business-focused device while Quest 3 is going for a wider consumer appeal.

In terms of pricing, Quest Pro at $999 is a bigger investment although there’s a smaller graphic resolution per eye. Most of the features are marginally similar — controllers, hand tracking, PC connectivity and wireless capabilities.

Quest Pro does have facial expression traction and connection with business tools but we’re yet to hear more about it when Meta announces them.

The fact that , signals the market that Quest 3 is the horse they are betting on.

Audio

Audio was an area where the Quest 2 fell short of its impressive visual capabilities. Integrated speakers sounded compressed and tinny despite attempts at 3D spatialization. Maximum volume was also limited and underwhelming. The Quest 3 makes great strides to enhance integrated audio fidelity and immersion.

Sound has significantly fuller range, sounding less canned and more dimensional. Increased loudness capacity also helps engage the listener for more impactful cues and effects. Directional accuracy for 3D sounds has also been tightened up on the Quest 3. Pinpointing audio sources feels more natural with proper left/right balance and perceived distance than on the Quest 2’s imprecise staging.

Bass performance sees a noteworthy jump as well. The Quest 3 adds a genuine sense of body and heft to audio that was lacking on the Quest 2. Deeper low frequencies help ground the sound for richer atmosphere during games and experiences. While external headphones will still provide the most detailed and nuanced sound, the Quest 3’s audio improvements close the gap considerably compared to Quest 2’s deficient speakers.

Games And Mixed Reality

Quest 3 has no exclusive VR games, meaning that both Quest 2 and Quest 3 can play all of the same VR content. Thanks to several years of consistent game and app releases, the amount of content is really quite impressive, and easily the most comprehensive library of standalone VR content.

Many games have received a graphical upgrade for Quest 3, and this is very noticeable and impressive, thanks to the more powerful XR2 chip in the Quest 3. Games like The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners, and Golf+ look so much better on Quest 3. Others have received more modest graphical upgrades.

The improved resolution also makes a big difference to the amount of pixelation you see when looking at distant objects, and this has as much or more impact on the quality of the visuals. Whilst the graphics on Quest 3 still don’t compare to a lot of PC VR titles, they are a big jump up, and make the Quest 2 graphics look old and dated in comparison.

Mixed reality content is largely exclusive to Quest 3, due to the much better passthrough capabilities. The Quest 3 has two high-res passthrough cameras and a depth sensor, enabling some highly impressive mixed-reality games. Quest 2 has two grayscale passthrough cameras which can be used to play some mixed reality content, but the experience feels very experimental in nature.

I wasn’t particularly enthusiastic about mixed reality prior to getting Quest 3, but I’ve been really impressed by the capabilities. It has allowed me to play games like Eleven Table Tennis, where I can place the table in my hall and play table tennis in my home while retaining full awareness of my surroundings. It’s the same for games like Thrill of The Fight, where I’d previously been apprehensive about punching a wall, but MR allows me to see exactly where I am in the real world.

One of the most impressive Quest 3 mixed reality experiences that I have tried so far is PianoVision, which is an app that helps you to learn the piano, by placing a virtual keyboard over your real piano. This then shows you what notes to play and when, and incorporates loads of features to help you learn piano in mixed reality. The technology to provide high-quality mixed reality experiences has only just reached an acceptable level with the launch of the Quest 3, and it has got me very excited about what the future of this technology will bring.

Verdict: Meta Quest 3 or Quest 2?

These aren’t all the differences between the two headsets, but the ones that have stood out most to me over a few weeks of comparison.

Which should you buy? If you’re here for the standalone VR experience and are fairly sure it’s not going to be a flash-in-the-pan interest, get the Quest 3.

If you’re mostly interested in PC VR, the Quest 2 may be a better buy thanks to the sizeable price disparity. However, in that case you may also want to consider the Pico 4. It costs less than the Quest 3 and has some of its benefits, including pancake lenses and dual display panels. It’s not that easy to get hold of in the US, though, and does typically cost more than the Quest 2 these days.

What is a Meta Quest Anyway?

The Meta Quest is a standalone virtual reality headset developed by Meta (formerly known as Facebook) that allows you to dive into an immersive digital world.

Be it gaming, media, or even social networking, you can do it all.

Imagine fighting off zombies, or going on an adventurous quest, or sitting on a beach listening to waves crashing off the shore.

It’s also got built-in sensors to track your movement and Controllers for your hands.

And the best part? You don’t need to connect it to a computer, meaning you’re not tethered by cables, thus giving you full freedom of movement.

First came the Meta (aka Oculus) Quest 1, then the Quest 2, then the Quest Pro, and now coming soon, we’ll have the Quest 3; the latest and greatest version of the Meta Quest VR headset.

It should come as no shock that the Quest 3 is better than the Quest 2, but the question is whether it is $200 better.

The mixed-reality component is the easiest differentiator, if that sounds intriguing to you then you have to opt for the Quest 3 as the Quest 2 has nothing comparable.

However, that’s hardly all that gives Quest 3 the edge. The 40% size reduction is a game-changer as well. While the Quest 2 combined with the Elite Strap is solid and comfortable, you will never forget that you have a large headset strapped to your face. Add to this the higher resolution lenses, the more powerful (and hopefully efficient) Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chipset, and the redesigned controllers with improved haptics and it’s an incredibly enticing package.

So who should still go for Quest 2? If the mixed-reality doesn’t sound like anything you would use and you will mostly stick to relatively short (20-30 minute) VR sessions where the weight difference won’t mean much to you, then saving $200 to spend on VR apps and games is probably the right choice.

If you are a hardcore Quest 2 user now then Quest 3 is going to be hard to pass up as it is better in every regard. At least you can sell your Quest 2 to help offset some of the cost.

We’ll update this face-off again once we have our full Quest 3 review complete, but overall we’re impressed with the upgrades and the Quest 3 is likely the right choice for most VR headset buyers today.

Display and IPD

Good news for Quest fans — it’s been reported numerous times that the Quest 3 will feature notable display improvements over the Quest 2.

We expect that the Quest 3’s display resolution will be 4128-by-2208 pixels, which is quite a bit higher than its predecessor’s 3664-by-1920 (or 1832-by-1920 pixels per eye).

The Quest 3 may also have a default refresh rate of 120Hz, whereas the Quest 2 launched at 72Hz and eventually also got 120Hz via a software update, but 120Hz remains available only for a few supported apps.

From what we know so far, the Quest 3 will have a more intricate method of fine-tuning the IPD (Inter Pupillary Distance), using an IPD adjustment wheel located on the bottom left side of the headset. Whereas the Quest 2’s IPD can be adjusted by snapping its lenses into 3 different fixed positions.

Speaking of the IPD, we can reasonably hope that the Quest 3 will support a higher IPD range than the Quest 2’s 58-68 mm, but for now, we don’t have any official information on reliable leaks to confirm it.

Both the Quest 2 and Quest 3 are powered by Qualcomm’s dedicated line of Snapdragon XR2 chips for virtual reality. They’re designed to simultaneously power the gaming performance, dual displays, and multiple cameras without overheating.

The Oculus Quest 2 used the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 1, a redesigned version of the Snapdragon 865 chip from 2020; the Gen 2 model is most likely based on 2023’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2.

You can imagine how much more power you get by jumping three generations of new mobile hardware, to a redesigned version of the chip found in the best Android phones. At the same time, however, the Quest 3 has stronger performance, higher-resolution displays, more tracking cameras, and two full-color passthrough cameras; so it doesn’t hit Qualcomm’s promised 2.5X performance boost.

Instead, specific to the Meta Quest 3 vs. Quest 2 performance, Meta itself claims that the new chip and 33% extra RAM gives you 2X graphical performance and much faster loading times. It’s still a significant boost, one that helps developers offer higher refresh rates and more textures with less visual «fog.»

You also benefit from the Quest 3’s enhanced display resolution: it’s 30% more pixel rich than the Quest 2, with 445 more pixels per inch and (as mentioned before) 15% wider FoV. The display type is unchanged — LCD, which doesn’t deliver the rich colors and deep blacks of an OLED — but you’ll still notice an immediate difference that’s only enhanced by the XR2 Gen 2.

The only downside to all of these improvements is that the Meta Quest 3 is just as short-lived as the Quest 2, despite Qualcomm claiming that the XR2 Gen 2 runs 50% more efficiently. Meta claimed that the Quest 3 has a 2.2-hour average per session, but we regularly find that it runs out of juice at 2 hours, if not sooner.

The Quest 2 varies from 2 to 3 hours as well — though headsets that are several years old will have lost some capacity naturally over time. The main point here is that both headsets benefit from a battery pack built into an Elite Strap, which means spending more money on top of the headset cost.

Meta says that the Quest 3 will get over 100 «new or enhanced» games by the end of the year. That means all of the upcoming Quest 2 games will come out simultaneously on the Quest 3 with enhanced graphics, but also that Quest 2 owners won’t miss out on anything if they don’t upgrade.

When we asked Meta about Quest 3 exclusives, they said that «Some of our highest-end apps in the future may need to leverage the extra power of Quest 3 and be exclusive to that device, but more software will ship for both devices,» and that it’s ultimately the developer’s choice which headsets to support.

We’d guess you won’t see a Quest 3-exclusive VR title for the next year or two, since it means losing out on the huge Quest 2 install base that chooses not to upgrade immediately.

Still, we know that developers can target Quest 3 hardware and make games that look and perform better on the newer hardware. That means games like Assassin’s Creed VR and Asgard’s Wrath 2 will be higher resolution, have more detail, and have smoother performance on Quest 3.

Plus, mixed-reality games are a different story. We suspect many developers will skip the Quest 2 since MR games look so low-resolution and nauseating on the old headset. If you care about games like Lego Brick Tales and want to enjoy experiences that leave you fully aware of your environment, the Quest 3 is a significant step up compared to the Quest 2.

Having worn a Meta Quest 2 headset for countless hours over the years, it’s not uncomfortable, but the headset can slide a bit near the back, even when the strap is tightened.

With the Meta Quest 3, however, the two-pronged fabric band at the back better balances the headset, so it’s a snugger fit that doesn’t slip, even in intense rounds of Superhot or FitXR.

While the weight difference is negligible—the Meta Quest 2 is a tad lighter at 503 grams over the Meta Quest 3’s 515 grams—the newer headset is about 40 percent smaller.

The two wireless Touch Pro controllers are now a bit smaller and without that large plastic ring around each one but retain a similar grip and feature set. That said, the Meta Quest 3’s controllers now feature haptic feedback, called TruTouch technology. Like the PlayStation VR2, users can now feel slight vibrations in games and other content for that all-important immersion factor.
