The Samsung Galaxy S21 and iPhone 12 are among the finest camera phones in the business, and both offer plenty of features for the keen snapper.
The iPhone 12 is are kitted out with a 12MP dual camera set-up that includes a wide and ultra-wide lens. As a daytime snapper, there isn’t much to grumble about, with the iPhone 12 producing nicely balanced pictures with even colours and a fine sense of realism.
It’s a great system but the S21 appears to outgun the iPhone 12 – on paper, at least – with a triple-lens set-up that features a 12MP main sensor complemented by 12MP ultra-wide and 64MP telephoto lenses.
It looks like Samsung has the upper hand when it comes to recording video, too. Both the iPhone and the S21 capture 4K video at 60fps but the S21 is also capable of shooting 8K at 24fps. It even has 8K Video Snap allowing you to capture high-res photos when playing your videos back. Samsung also says you can shoot in 4K through all lenses, too.
Both these flagship 5G mobiles feature a slew of extra modes. Samsung’s S21 has Single Take, which creates a portfolio of all the best moments you capture in one shot.
Apple counters with a well-honed Night Mode that achieves brilliant results in low light conditions, using machine learning to recover details that would usually be lost in shadows.
Samsung has also followed Apple in giving users the option to record through the front and rear camera simultaneously. The idea being you can now capture your reaction to whatever you’re filming. Clever.
The iPhone 12 performed well in our tests but the Galaxy S21 appears to offer an even beefier camera set-up. The standard S21 also boasts an optical zoom (reserved for Apple’s pricier iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max models).
iPhone 12 vs Galaxy S21 Performance: Neck and neck
Determining which smartphone performs better overall is a tough call; both of them have their benefits. For sheer speed, the iPhone 12 is rocking Apple’s state-of-the-art A14 Bionic chip, which is the fastest smartphone processor there is. The Galaxy S21 is running on the new Snapdraon 888, while this is definitely the best processor that Qualcomm has ever produced, it still clocks in slightly slower than the A14 Bionic.
On the other hand, the Galaxy S21 does have double the RAM than the iPhone 12, so that might make the differences in speed pretty indistinguishable. Even though the iPhone 12 is faster, gameplay will likely feel better on the Galaxy S21 regardless, mostly due to the 120Hz refresh rate.
As for battery life, Samsung has adapted its high refresh rate to lower automatically when it’s not needed, helping the battery to last longer overall. The result is that the GS21’s big 4,000 mAh battery can now outlast the iPhone 12’s battery life by about an hour between charges.
So while the iPhone 12 has a better processor, the Galaxy S21 has more RAM and better battery life. The iPhone 12 may deliver games at a faster speed, but gameplay on the Galaxy S21 will look smoother because of the high refresh rate. When it comes to performance, these two handsets come out pretty even in our opinion.

The iPhone 12 has a cool design that harkens back to the flat edges of the iPhone 5, which is pretty nice, but the Galaxy S21 has a whole new look that is undeniably cool. The camera is housed within the aluminum frame of the phone, creating a contrast of metal accents against a colorful backing. The result is a striking look that definitely stands out, especially in the gold and Phantom Violet colorway.
When it comes to quality materials, the ceramic shield screen on the iPhone 12 is definitely the toughest smartphone screen there is. While the Gorilla Glass Victus on the GS21 is also durable, the iPhone 12 screen is more drop resistant. The Galaxy has a new polycarbonate back now that won’t break, but it doesn’t feel as high-end as glass.
As for display, both handsets offer super high-resolution and beautiful color reproduction, but the new AMOLED 2X display on the GS21 is brighter and more vivid. The real difference here, however, lies within the refresh rate. Galaxy’s 120Hz refresh rate will provide smoother scrolling and excellent gameplay, a definite advantage over the iPhone’s 60Hz refresh rate. For slick looks and high-performance display, we have to give this round to the Galaxy S21.

Cameras can be the main selling point for a certain category of users. I’ve personally met people who just ask «Does it take good photos?» right before purchasing a device (if they receive a positive answer from the seller). On the surface level, we have a clear winner here — the Galaxy S21 FE. To break down both devices’ cameras, let’s start with the front. Both phones have a single front-facing camera, However, Samsung’s 32MP beats Apple’s 12MP. They both have an aperture of f/2.2, so there’s no competition from this aspect.
When it comes to rear cameras, the Galaxy phone has three, while the iPhone has only two. They both have primary and ultra-wide lenses, but Samsung’s has a telephoto lens as a bonus. The common lenses are all rated as 12MP, but they have differing apertures. The primary camera on the iPhone dominates Samsung’s from this angle. While the Galaxy’s ultra-wide lens has a better aperture and a slightly wider field of view.
The Galaxy S21 FE comes with an 8MP telephoto lens. Additionally, the phone supports up to 30x space zoom and 3x optical zoom. It’s great for selfies, too, considering it has a significantly better front-facing camera. So if taking better photos is what you’re looking for, you might want to consider buying a Samsung Galaxy S21 FE.

Whatever iPhone 12 or Samsung Galaxy S21 model you choose, you’ll be getting a seriously nippy chipset powering the phone. The iPhone 12 series runs an A14 Bionic, while the S21 packs the Snapdragon 888 (USA) or the Exynos 2100 (UK).
These both have 5G modems and they’re three of the quickest chipsets we’ve ever tested. You really don’t need to worry about performance here in the slightest and they’re all excellent choices if you’re into mobile gaming. During testing we didn’t find a single game they couldn’t easily run with their graphics settings maxed out.
Storage options vary by model, with the iPhone 12 and Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra going all the way up to 512GB. Plump for cheapest versions and you’ll get 64GB on the iPhone 12 and 128GB on the Galaxy S21. Samsung has ditched expandable storage from the range, something you’ve never been able to find on the iPhone.
Battery life varies between the various models of both phone families. The biggest two phones (that’s the S21 Ultra and the iPhone 12 Pro Max) last the longest by some way, with the smaller models all getting us through the day. When it comes to the 12 Mini, you might need to utilise the battery saver mode to really get from morning until night, however.
Another similarity is that you won’t find a charger or a pair of headphones in the box of any iPhone 12 or Galaxy S21 models. Instead, the boxes are super-simple coming with documentation and a cable. This cable is USB-C to USB-C for the S21 and USB-C to Lightning for the iPhones.
All of the iPhone 12 models have 12MP cameras, with the iPhone 12/Mini having a duo of them while the Pro models add a tele sensor to the mix. You’ll find a much bigger main sensor on the iPhone 12 Pro Max though and the snaps here are the best of the bunch.

On the Samsung Galaxy S21 and S21 Plus you’ve got a very similar setup to the outgoing S20 models. That’s a 12MP wide, 12MP ultra wide and 64MP tele. 8K video is supported too, with the iPhone 12 maxing out at 4K.

Choosing between the iPhone 12 Pro Max and the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra is tricky. We prefer stills and video from the iPhone, thanks to more natural colours and better HDR processing, however it’s hard to argue with the versatility offered by the S21 Ultra.
The duo of zoom lenses get you far closer to the action than is capable with the paltry 2.5x zoom on the iPhone 12 Pro Max and this versatility is hard to pass up.

Galaxy S21 vs. iPhone 12: Battery Life
On paper, the Galaxy S21 outshines iPhone 12 in terms of battery capacity, with the former featuring 4000mAh, while the latter shipping with 2815mAh.
Naturally, it would seem that the Galaxy S21 would have a much longer battery life than the iPhone 12. However, the A14 Bionic chip’s efficiency makes the iPhone 12 last pretty much as long as the Galaxy S21. So, you should generally get a day of typical usage from either without worry.
The iPhone 12 takes full advantage of MagSafe’s 15W wireless charging speeds. Along with that, it lets you charge 50% in about 30 minutes with a 20W power adapter.
The Galaxy S21 features 25W fast charging capabilities, support 15W wireless charging, and 4.5W reverse wireless charging.
It’s worth mentioning neither phones come with a power brick out of the box. So, if you don’t own one already, make sure to buy one.

As with 4G before it, early 5G tech has proven to be hard on batteries. That’s not surprising. iPhones usually fare pretty well in battery tests, but with the iPhone 12 series, all models but the 12 Pro Max saw disappointing results. By no means unusable, the iPhone 12, with its 2,815 mAh battery, is so-so in daily life — use it lightly and you’ll be fine, but push it too hard and you’ll be looking for a charger.
In the Tom’s Guide battery test, where devices are left to endlessly load webpages on a mobile broadband connection (5G in this case), the average is around 10 hours. This is considered good and some phones exceed that. That said, the iPhone 12 clocked a mere 8 hours and 25 minutes. The Galaxy S21 with its 60Hz mode enabled scored 9 hours and 53 minutes; that time fell to a disappointing 6.5 hours with adaptive mode on.

The Samsung Galaxy S21 has the leg up here. Yes, it has a physically larger battery at 4,000 mAh, but Samsung has had a couple of generations of 5G tech now to get things right. The iPhone 12 is Apple’s first 5G lineup, so some growing pains are inevitable.
In a surprise move, Samsung followed one of Apple’s more controversial decisions with the iPhone 12. Just like Apple’s phones, the new Galaxy S21 phones ship without a charger, which Apple says is friendlier to the environment. You still get USB cables included, so you can buy fast charging bricks separately. Apple and Samsung are more than happy to supply you with one, for a fee.
Finally, we test to see how fast each phone can charge from empty. In 30 minutes, the Galaxy S21 hit 55% while the iPhone 12 reached 31% in the same amount of time. It’s worth noting that our lab used the wireless MagSafe charger on a 20W power brick for the iPhone 12’s charge test, whereas the S21 used a 25W charger.

Samsung Galaxy S21 vs. iPhone 12: 5G
While we’d have to spend a long period of time testing 5G performance, we did pit the Galaxy S21 against the iPhone 12 on low-band Verizon 5G. The results were equally underwhelming, but they were also surprising. In our Galaxy S21 Ultra vs iPhone 12 Pro Max face off, Samsung’s phone handily beat the iPhone in 5G speed across AT&T and T-Mobile.
For our testing, we did five dry runs and five recorded tests in Ookla’s SpeedTest app. Both phones were held in the same hand in the same position. Both reported a full signal and they used the same Verizon SIM.
The iPhone came out ahead with a mean download speed of 12.74 Mbps and the Galaxy S21 trailed with a mean download speed of 10.34 Mbps. Again, neither speed is impressive — which is more of a comment on the state of 5G these days — but it was interesting to see the iPhone 12 barely beat the S21, when the S21 Ultra proved so much faster than Apple’s comparable device.

Samsung S21 vs iPhone 12: Cameras
While the iPhone 12 sports a dual 12MP camera system on the back consisting of a primary and ultrawide setup, Samsung’s Galaxy S21 features a 12MP main camera, a 12MP ultrawide and a 64MP ‘telephoto’ camera. You’ll notice the inverted commas there — that’s because the zoom is digital rather than optical on the S21 and its bigger brother, the S21 Plus.
With matching resolutions across primary modules, looking at specs alone, Apple wins the day when it comes to aperture, delivering an f/1.6 lens versus Samsung’s f/1.8 lens, while Samsung edges ahead with pixel size — 1.8µm versus 1.4µm.
As for the ultrawides, Samsung triumphs here. While both phones include 13mm equivalent lenses, the S21 combines its lens with a wider aperture and a larger sensor, making Samsung’s the ultrawide champ on paper.
Out of the box, Samsung also offers more shooting modes, including manual photography and video capture. That isn’t to say the features aren’t available for iOS users, however, they will require an app download, likely at a cost.
With OIS across the primary sensors of Apple’s iPhone 12 and Samsung’s Galaxy S21, it’s also worth noting that the hybrid telephoto module on the S21 also features OIS, packs an f/2 lens and is capable of capturing 8K video, compared the maximum 4K capture on the iPhone 12.
