iPhone 11 vs iPhone 11 Pros: Rear cameras

The rear camera system is where Apple truly differentiates its two classes of iPhone. Apple is making a big deal out of the new triple-camera array on the iPhone 11 Pro models, but the dual-camera lens on the iPhone 11 is no slouch:

  • Camera 1: 12MP wide, f/1.8, OIS
  • Camera 2: 12MP telephoto, f/2.0, OIS, 2x optical zoom
  • Camera 3: 12MP ultra wide, f/2.4, 120-degree FOV

The obvious difference is the addition of the telephoto camera on the iPhone 11 Pros. So while the iPhone 11 can go from 0.5x (ultra wide) to 1x (wide), the iPhone 11 Pros go from 0.5x to 2x (telephoto), for a total of 4x optical zoom. (But that’s measuring from how far out the camera zooms, so you’re really only getting the same 2x zoom as before.)

The triple-camera system in the iPhone 11 Pro is more than just an extra lens, however. Apple says its engineers “precisely calibrate each camera individually for things like white balance and exposure. Then they push it even further, pairing the three cameras and calibrating them again for module to module alignment.” To hear Apple describe it, the iPhone Pro’s camera is about much more than just an extra lens.

Nonetheless, both camera tiers have very similar features. There’s a new Night Mode for taking useable shots in extreme low light; portrait mode and portrait lighting; next-generation Smart HDR; and advanced red‑eye correction and auto image stabilization. And both the cheaper iPhone 11 and more expensive 11 Pros snap simultaneous wide and ultra wide pics each time you shoot, so you can decide later which one to keep.

As far as video, all three phones record in 4K at up to 60fps, and feature audio zoom (which focuses the microphone on your subject as you zoom), brighter True Tone flash, and the new QuıckTake video that lets you hold the shutter to quickly switch to video mode.

iPhone 11 vs iPhone 11 Pro: design

The standard iPhone 11 has more colour options than the Pro (Image credit: Apple)

The iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro clearly share the same design philosophy, but it’s clear in the finish why the Pro is more expensive. Both phones have an all-screen design with no buttons on the front, a notch in the display for the Face ID facial recognition camera and curved metal edges, wrapping around to the flat rear of the phone. However, the iPhone 11 has slightly larger borders at the edge of the screen and has aluminium rather than stainless steel sides. It also has a smooth, glossy glass back, whereas the 11 Pro and Pro Max have frosted, matt-textured glass backs.

That said, the standard iPhone 11 still looks and feels like a top-quality Apple device. But the iPhone 11 Pro is notably more refined even before we turn to the internals. You do get more colour options with the standard iPhone though. The iPhone 11 comes in black, white, yellow, green, purple and red, whereas with the iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max, you’re limited to black, silver, gold and green.

Performance, battery life, and charging

Julian Chokkattu/Digital Trends

All three of the new iPhones boast Apple’s latest A13 Bionic processor, so you can expect speedy performance across the board. These iPhones will all run the latest games and apps without complaint. Apple never reveals the amount of RAM in its iPhones, but we expect that the Pro and Pro Max will have a little more than the iPhone 11, which means they should be more capable multitaskers.

Battery capacity is another thing Apple tends not to divulge, preferring to state the expected battery life in hours. The two Pro models can outlast the iPhone 11 and Apple says the iPhone 11 Pro can go for four hours longer than the iPhone XS and the Pro Max can last five hours longer than the XS Max. All three support wireless charging and fast wired charging, but only the Pro models get an 18W charger in the box.

Winner: Apple iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max

iPhone 11 vs iPhone 11 Pro vs iPhone 11 Pro Max design

The three iPhone 11 models all have broadly the same design and it’s also a design that’s similar to the iPhone XS range. That’s especially true from the front, as they have a large notch at the top but an otherwise all-screen design.

They also have a metal frame (aluminum in the case of the iPhone 11, stainless steel for the other two) and a glass back, but that back is where the main differences – both from the XS and each other – are found, as the cameras are now arranged in a square block in the top left corner.

That’s true of all three new iPhones, but the number of lenses differs, with the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max having three lenses, while the iPhone 11 comes with two. In all cases though the camera bump is rather large and unsightly.

The three phones all have water-resistance though, albeit to a depth of four meters for the Pro models and just two for the standard iPhone 11.

All three phones are water-resistant, but not to the same degree (Image credit: TechRadar)

The colors also differ, with the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max coming in Gold, Space Grey, Silver and Midnight Green shades, while the iPhone 11 is more colorful in Yellow, Purple, Black, Green and White shades.

The iPhone 11 also has a glossy back, while the Pro models have a matte back, so the look is a bit different.

Finally, weight and dimensions also differ. The iPhone 11 Pro is 144 x 71.4 x 8.1mm and 188g, the iPhone 11 Pro Max is 158 x 77.8 x 8.1mm and 226g, and the iPhone 11 is 150.9 x 75.7 x 8.3mm and 194g. So the iPhone 11 is the thickest of the three, as is fitting given its lower price.

While that 0.2mm difference in thickness is tiny, we found it noticeable when holding both the iPhone 11 and the iPhone 11 Pro. Another thing we noted when putting the three phones through a review was that while the iPhone 11 Pro Max is of course the largest, it’s not unmanageable in the hand.

The smaller iPhone was better

Perhaps the most obvious and important reason to buy the iPhone 11 Pro over the iPhone 11 is size. They are very differently sized phones and they will fit in your hands differently. With a 5.8-inch screen and a weight of 6.63 ounces (188 grams), the iPhone 11 Pro is the smallest of the three iPhone 11 devices. (Though, if a small phone is what you’re after, the new iPhone SE might be a better option, at 4.7 inches and 5.22 ounces.) The solid-feeling phone is the easiest to use one-handed. Weighing 6.84 ounces the iPhone 11 is heavier than the 11 Pro but doesn’t feel as dense. The iPhone 11 is 0.2 millimeters thicker than the 11 Pro, which makes it feel a tad chunky.

Everyone’s hands and needs are different. I have large hands, but prefer the svelte feeling of the 11 Pro. But if you are willing to compromise a heavier weight for a larger screen, get the 11.

And if you want the absolute biggest screen you can have, go for the iPhone 11 Pro Max that has a 6.5-inch OLED screen but weighs 7.97 ounces (226 grams).

Winner: For its small size, the 11 Pro is the way to go for me.

iPhone 11 Pro Max

The iPhone 11 Pro has a gorgeous OLED display

The iPhone 11 Pro has a 5.8-inch OLED screen, while the 11 has a 6.1-inch LCD display. When I look at the phones side-by-side, the screen on the 11 Pro looked better, brighter and showed off more details. It is a joy to watch videos and edit photos on.

The OLED screen on the 11 Pro supports HDR and has a much higher
contrast ratio
(the ratio of the brightest and darkest colors on a display). The 11 Pro has a contrast ratio of 2,000,000:1 compared to the 11’s 1,400:1. On paper that means the iPhone 11 Pro is capable of darker black levels and more color saturation. That said, side-by-side, the differences between the two screens are sometimes hard to notice. In and of itself, the colors on the iPhone 11’s LCD are accurate and videos look good.

The iPhone 11 Pro Max has a 6.5-inch OLED that has the same pixel density as the iPhone 11 Pro.

Winner: The screen on the iPhone 11 is good, but the one on the 11 Pro is even better.

The nitty-gritty details

Other than a few very obvious differences, the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro Max are more similar than you may think. In terms of the TrueDepth camera, for example, they’re identical in specs, including 4K video support and those super fun «slo-fies.» Here’s a breakdown of the major specs for each model. You can see how many features the iPhone 11 Pro Max has that the iPhone 11 has too, for $300 less, even!

Many of the features are the same between the iPhone 11 and the iPhone 11 Max, and a lot of the differences are minimal, especially when you look at the internals that powers them both. There are a couple of interesting differences that are harder to catch just by glancing at the phones.

First, the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro Max are both IP68 water-resistant; however, the iPhone 11 Pro Max is rated for a depth of 4 meters (13.12 feet), whereas the iPhone 11 is only rated to a depth of 2 meters (6.56 feet). This may not matter much to most people, but if you’re a bit clumsy and are worried about getting your new iPhone wet, it’s good to know that the iPhone 11 Pro Max goes twice as deep.

The charging adapters are different, too. Both the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro Max are capable of fast charging (about 50% charge in 30 minutes) but only with a charger that is 18W or higher. Interestingly, the iPhone 11 Pro Max ships with an 18W charger in the box, so you can take advantage of the fast-charging capabilities; however, the iPhone 11 still comes with the same old 5W charging brick that the iPhone has always come with.

  • iPhone 11 стал работать на 1 час дольше, чем iPhone XR;
  • iPhone 11 Pro стал работать на 4 часа дольше, чем iPhone XS;

Super Retina XDR.

iPhone 11 vs. iPhone 11 Pros: Performance

On paper, there’s little to separate the iPhone 11 from the Pro models, as all three are powered by Apple’s A13 Bionic processor. And since the A12 Bionic from 2018’s phones already outperformed some Android flagships that came after, you’d be correct that the gap widens further with the A13, though the Snapdragon 865 and Snapdragon 865 Plus powering 2020’s top Android phones pulled some models closer to the iPhone 11.

When introducing the iPhone 11 Pro, Apple told us to expect 20% performance improvements from the CPU, GPU and neural processor contained within the A13. And the newer chip is more energy efficient, too, with Apple touting a 40% improvement in power consumption just for the A13’s GPU.

In terms of benchmark results, the iPhone 11 Pro Max and iPhone 11 Pro turned in comparable results on Geekbench 5, which measures overall performance (3,517 and 3,509, respectively.) The iPhone 11 was slightly behind with a multicore score of 3,251 — a surprising difference given that all three iPhone 11 models have the same 4GB of RAM according to phone teardowns. Suffice it to say, even the iPhone 11 beat out the Geekbench 5 score of the Galaxy S20 (3,147); the OnePlus 8 Pro topped the iPhone 11 with a multicore score of 3,379, though the iPhone 11’s single-core result still tops the latest OnePlus phone.

The iPhone 12 models feature the A14 Bionic, which is even more powerful than the A13 Bionic. You can read all about our iPhone 12 benchmarks, but suffice it to say, that the new phones outperformed the iPhone 11 models on most tests.

iPhone 11 vs. iPhone 11 Pros: Cameras

This probably stands out as the big differentiator between the iPhone 11 models. The iPhone 11 features two rear cameras — a 12-megapixel wide angle lens with an f/1.8 aperture and a 12-MP ultra wide lens with an f/2.4 aperture. That ultra wide lens delivers a 120-degree field of view so that you can capture more of your surroundings in images when you zoom out.

Those two cameras return on the iPhone 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max, but they’re joined by a third 12-MP lens. This telephoto lens features an f/2.0 aperture, letting in 40% more light than the telephoto lens Apple included on the iPhone XS. You get a 2x optical zoom from the telephoto lens.

Despite the extra lens on the Pro models, the three phones support many of the same camera features. Whether you have an iPhone 11 or one of the Pro models, a Night Mode feature should mean better pictures in low light. All three new phones offer QuickTake, a new camera function where you can capture video while also shooting still images just by long-pressing on the shutter. Even the Deep Fusion feature, which combines nine different shots for a more detailed image, works on the iPhone 11 just as it does on the iPhone 11 Pro.

All three phones also sport the same 12-MP front camera and offer the ability to take slow-motion videos — a feature that Apple dubbed «slofies» to the rest of the world’s apparent amusement. Those front cameras can also shoot 4K video at 60 fps, too.

All three iPhones fared impressively in our testing, which included comparing their output to images shot by leading camera phones from Google and Samsung. (We’ve got a full comparison between the iPhone 11 Pro and Pixel 4, its primary camera competition for best camera phone at the time.) The Night Mode feature is particularly welcome, letting Apple’s new phones produce dramatically better shots in low light.

Still, on most shots, you’d be hard-pressed to tell the difference on what was captured by an iPhone 11 versus one of Apple’s 11 Pro models. The big exception is portrait shots, since the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max has the benefit of a telephoto lens for focusing on subjects. And if you really want to see the advances Apple has made with its cameras in recent years, check out our iPhone 11 vs. iPhone 8 face-off.

iPhone 11 vs iPhone 11 Pro vs iPhone 11 Pro Max specs and features

In news that will surprise no one, all three iPhone 11 handsets use Apple’s A13 Bionic chipset. This being the next generation after the A12 Bionic in the iPhone XS range.

According to Apple, the A13 has the fastest CPU and GPU ever used in a smartphone. What we didn’t know at launch was how much RAM these phones have, as Apple never reveals this, but teardowns have shown that they each have 4GB, so there’s no difference there. As you’d expect, we found in our own tests that performance from all three models was very strong.

For software, you’re of course getting iOS 13 on all three models, while for storage, the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max are available in 64GB, 256GB and 512GB sizes, while the iPhone 11 comes in 64GB, 128GB and 256GB capacities.

iPhone 11 vs iPhone 11 Pro: performance

The iPhone 11 is still pretty speedy (Image credit: Apple)

All three iPhone 11 models use Apple’s A13 Bionic processor, at the same speed, with the same 4GB of RAM. This was the fastest phone processor on the planet when the phone were released, not surpassed until Apple’s follow-up, the A14 processor in iPhone 12. It remains a very strong chip, near laptop strength in terms of power. It can handle 4K video editing, processing large files, opening and editing complex images with real-time changes, and, well, messaging and stuff, is that what phones used to be for?

The only limitation you’re likely to come across is the RAM, and even then the only problem we’ve ever seen is that in image editing apps, the maximum number of layers you can have depends on the canvas size – the multiplication of the two can fill the RAM. But you have to be 1) doing much more than just mid-tier photo edits, and 2) slightly bonkers to want to get that involved on a phone screen.

iPhone 11 vs iPhone 11 Pro: conclusion

It’s a close call between the iPhone 11 and the iPhone 11 Pro (Image credit: Apple)

When it comes to capability and performance, there’s no doubt that the iPhone 11 Pro is the better option, especially for creatives, thanks to its more flexible triple-lens camera system and OLED screen, which offers superior brightness and sharpness. The Pro Max adds in the benefit of the best battery life of the three phones, which can be vital for intense days working out of the office or home.

However, both iPhone 11 Pro options are considerably more expensive than the standard iPhone 11. Considering that the iPhone 11 offers the same colour accuracy on the screen, is just as capable at running apps and opening large files for viewing, and offers better battery life than the smaller 11 Pro, it’s still a great buy. However, in both cases, these phones are no longer in production, so your choice may depend on the prices that you find for models on offer – in most cases, they’re likely to be renewed models.

We think most people will choose which to go for based on the budget they have in mind. In all cases, you’ll get a powerful phone with excellent screen quality and high-quality cameras. Of course, the iPhone 12 and 13 do offer upgrades in many areas, and it sounds like the iPhone 15 will add more. Many people will prefer to pay for those, but if you’re bargain hunting, the iPhone 13 still offers a solid smartphone. Take a look at today’s best prices on the iPhone 11, iPhone Pro and iPhone Pro Max below.

The telephoto camera is nice to have

The iPhone 11 Pro (and 11 Pro Max) have a third camera with a telephoto lens that the iPhone 11 doesn’t. At times it was nice switching to the telephoto camera. And compared to the
iPhone XS
, the updated telephoto camera combined with Deep Fusion processing meant I took photos with better image quality.

There were times I framed a shot better with the 11 Pro’s telephoto camera than I could with the main camera. For example, when I took a top-down shot of a plate of food with the main camera, I could see the phone’s shadow on the plate. But when I switched to the telephoto camera and moved the phone higher away from the table there was no shadow.

There are a couple caveats about the iPhone 11 Pro’s telephoto camera though. When you take Night Mode photos at 2x, the 11 Pro doesn’t use the telephoto camera. Instead, it takes a crop of the main wide-angle camera. Also, the telephoto camera excels in bright conditions, but when taking photos in medium-to-low light, I noticed better image quality if I took the same photo with the main camera and cropped in.

All in all, the telephoto lens is useful on the 11 Pro, but I didn’t miss having it when I used the 11. If I needed to zoom in on a photo, a 2x crop of a photo I took with the main camera worked fine. I do recommend looking at the photos you have on your current phone and see how many were taken zoomed in and how many photos would look better had you been able to zoom in a bit. If you have a lot of pictures where you wished you had a dedicated telephoto camera, then you should consider an iPhone 11 Pro.

Which iPhone should you get?

In the end, which phone you pick mostly comes down to how you’re going to use it. If you love the idea of having a big phone with a massive screen that takes advantage of the OLED display offering superior brightness and contrast get the iPhone 11 Pro Max. If you’re a photography fiend and want all the options you can possibly have when going shooting, the iPhone 11 Pro Max is for you. Of course, if you have the money and just want to have the newest and best that Apple has to offer, the iPhone 11 Pro Max is it.

So here’s the good news: the iPhone 11 is a great phone for most people. If you don’t care about the OLED screen, and you don’t find yourself longing for a third camera lens, the iPhone 11 has the same internals starting at $400 less. Its 6.1-inch screen is a little easier to use with one hand, and it’s still an upgrade over last year’s iPhone line up, making it a great choice for anyone looking for a little more power and speed in their daily carry.

iPhone 11

No doubt, this is the best iPhone for most people.

Despite fewer premium features, this is probably the iPhone most will select in the coming months. Pick your favorite color, and enjoy!

Conclusions

The iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max are the unmistakable winner here in this comparison. They comes with superior screen, an increasingly adaptable camera, and also has a fast charging. Yes, you do need to pay $300 more to get those features and the iPhone 11 has a similar processor and software, so it will be sufficient for certain people. In short what is the difference between iphone 11, pro and pro max – Most of the feature is the same major difference are the iPhone 11 comes a 6.1 inches screen display, the iPhone 11 Pro’s 5.8 inches display and 6.5 inches screen display on the iPhone 11 Pro Max.
