Google pixel 7 review

Camera

  • 50-megapixel main camera
  • 13-megapixel ultrawide
  • No telephoto lens
  • Excellent photos overall

Of course, the starring feature of Google’s Pixel phones is typically its camera. These handsets are often seen as the key Android camera players, perhaps even eclipsing Samsung, so the pressure is on to see whether the Pixel 7 can keep up those lofty standards.

The camera system here seems highly similar to that of the Pixel 6, at least on the rear where you’ll once again find a 50-megapixel primary camera and a 13-megapixel ultrawide lens (with a telephoto lens being reserved for the more expensive Pixel 7 Pro). On the front there’s a new selfie camera with a 10.8-megapixel resolution, meaning that it’s now capable of shooting 4K footage.

It’s worth noting that, while the newer Pixel 8 shares the same combination of a 50MP main and 13MP ultrawide, the primary sensor is new and more capable in low-light conditions so you will see a slight boost by opting for the newer model.

Regardless, I was undoubtedly pleased with the camera during my time using it across various different lighting conditions.

Images taken with the Pixel’s rear cameras can sometimes be jaw-droppingly good; punchy yet not unnaturally vivid, highly detailed, and versatile enough to give you a few different shooting options. Friends noted the quality of the pictures, even those who are not particularly into photography.

Below is a selection of shots from the main camera, including close-ups of food, and portrait shots, to show its quality and versatility:

Some of the above pictures were taken under very strong sunlight yet did not appear washed out (though there was occasionally some lens flare), and this quality held up under darker conditions as well, with colour being restored to the image effectively but not overwhelming it:

The ultrawide sensor (which took the image directly above) packed some extra versatility into the package, letting you squeeze more into the frame, which was particularly useful when in mountainous regions and trying to give some idea of the scale of the surrounding scenery, or if trying to shoot a sizeable looming building:

As you can see, while these images were taken with a lower resolution sensor than the main one, they still remain impressively detailed.

There’s no dedicated telephoto sensor on board this phone, so if you want to zoom a little closer to your subject then you’ll have to count on the digital zoom capabilities of the main sensor. Set by default to 2x, this still functions well; the below pictures were taken of the same bridge, from the same position using the ultrawide, main camera, and 2x digital zoom for a side-by-side comparison:

Selfie photos were also generally appealing, with sharp and punchy images that accurately reproduced the textures of skin and hair:

Finally, I was also very impressed with the video capture capabilities. Able to take 4K footage at 60 frames per second, the video we took with this phone on these settings (note that the default is 1080p @ 30fps) was very sharp and smooth.

Google Pay.)

Final Thoughts

Even with the release of the Pixel 8, the Pixel 7 remains a solid phone overall – especially at its newly discounted price that aligns it with the £449 Pixel 7a. That’s pretty good value for photographic performance of this calibre, and its premium-looking and robust design also belies that rather more modest price tag.

Plus, with a near-identical design to the Pixel 8, you’re not missing out on that much aside from a tweaked primary sensor, a slightly faster 120Hz refresh rate and boosted Tenser G3 power.

That’s not to say that the Pixel 7 is without its faults, of course. The good-looking camera bar can sometimes be a little impractical, the charging speed lags behind many of its Android rivals, and it doesn’t have a telephoto camera. That said, these all amount to pretty minor quibbles that really shouldn’t be dealbreakers for the majority of buyers.

Battery Life

  • Good endurance
  • Slow charging speeds

While most of us expect a few healthy upgrades from one phone generation to the next, in this case your hopes might seem to be dashed; while the Pixel 6 had a 4614mAh capacity, its successor offers just 4355mAh.

However, in my experience, this actually did deliver decent battery life over the course of the day, more so than I would have expected given the numbers on the spec sheet. This may be in part due to the efficiency of Google’s Adaptive Battery feature, which adjusts usage based on your activity with the phone, but I generally found that I could get a heavy day of use out of the phone without needing to worry about the battery when I got near the end of the day, which would usually finish around 20%.

On the other hand, I can’t be quite as positive about the charging speeds of this phone. There’s no charging brick included in the box for starters, so you’ll have to supply your own, and even when you do, you’ll have to make do with one that supplies 30W maximum. This will see the phone topped up in just over an hour, which is not so speedy by modern standards.

While this might not bother you too much, it does mean that you won’t be able to quickly top up the battery if, say, you’ve forgotten to charge it overnight. It’s not the most significant shortfall a phone can have, but fast charging is still a feature I usually appreciate, so I was a little underwhelmed by the speeds on offer here. Fortunately, at least the Pixel 7 does offer wireless charging, adding convenience of a different kind.

Price

By usual flagship smartphone standards, the Pixel 7 seems like an absolute bargain. Starting at £599 / $599 / AU$999, the Pixel verges on the upper end of the budget range, undercutting its most obvious Apple rival, the iPhone 14, by nearly a third of its asking price. It’s also launching at the same price as its predecessor, the Pixel 6, differentiating it from the iPhone 14, which is more expensive outside the US than its predecessor was.

For the seemingly very reasonable asking price, you get an admirably specced device, equipped with Google’s brand new, in-house developed Tensor G2 processor, 128GB of storage and 8GB of RAM. There is a 256GB storage / 8GB RAM option for £100 / $100 / AU$130 more, and with no option to expand the memory via an SD card, it’s worth springing for the extra storage if you plan on snapping lots of pictures or downloading movies and music.

The Pixel 7 sits in the middle of Google’s current Pixel line-up, with the budget-oriented Pixel 6A currently retailing for £349 / $349 / AU$749, and the more expensive Pixel 7 Pro retailing for £849 / $899 / AU$1299. The Pro offers a larger, higher-resolution display, 120Hz adaptive refresh rate and an extra telephoto lens camera.

Your 2022 smartphone lineup

Night Sight.)

Magic Eraser.

Google Pixel 7 review: Battery life and charging

Another area where the Pixel 6 failed to shine was its battery life. In our battery test — where phones are tasked with continuously surfing the web until they run out of power — last year’s Google phone finished roughly 90 minutes behind the average time for smartphones.

While the Tensor G2 promises better power efficiency, the Pixel 7 continues the trend of Google’s phone struggling with our battery test. Perhaps, that’s not a surprise: Google opted for a smaller 4,355 mAh power cell than the 4,614 mAh battery that powered the Pixel 6, so the Tensor was going to have to do a lot of heavy-lifting to get that battery life number up. And during my use of the phone, I saw the Pixel 7’s battery dip precipitously, albeit during intensive testing that doesn’t really mirror real-world use.

The results of our testing are pretty grim. With the 90Hz refresh rate turned off, Google’s phone lasted a little more than 7 hours on our test — about 3 hours off the pace of the average smartphone. That’s a poor first impression.

Swipe to scroll horizontally

Phone Battery size Battery life (Hrs:Mins)
Google Pixel 7 4,355 mAh 7:13 (90Hz)
Samsung Galaxy S23 3,900 mAh 10:27 (120Hz)
iPhone 14 3,279 mAh 9:28 (60Hz)
Samsung Galaxy S22 3,700 mAh 7:51 (120Hz)
Google Pixel 6 4,614 mAh 8:13 (90Hz)

Allegedly, the Pixel 7 can support 30W charging, but Google said the same thing last year, when the top speed was closer to 23W. We only had a 20W charger on hand when it came time to recharge a drained Pixel 7, and only got to 41% after 30 minutes. The iPhone 14, which is capped at 20W charging, got to 54% in that same time.

Google Pixel 7 review: Tensor features

Some of the photo features outlined above are powered by the Google Tensor G2, the follow-up to last year’s Google-designed system-on-chip that debuted with the Pixel 6. Google is sticking with its own silicon for its latest phone, with the Tensor G2 continuing to lean heavily on a Tensor Processing Unit that draws upon machine learning and artificial intelligence to provide Pixel owners with some rather unique experiences.

The best of the bunch is a new photo-editing tool called Photo Unblur that does exactly what it’s name implies — get rid of those less-than-stylistic blurs that mar your photos for crisper, cleaner shots.

You can apply Photo Unblur to images captured with your Pixel 7, but the real value of the feature is that it works on photos shot on entirely different phones (so long as you’re accessing them from your Pixel 7, presumably via the Photos app).

I used Photo Unblur to clean up a shot of my daughter from seven years ago that I had captured with an iPhone 5c. Photo Unblur managed to take a murky, backlit image of her in a dimly lit room and smooth out the blur to call out features on her face. The end result isn’t perfect, but it’s more shareable than it was before.  I tested the Pixel 7 Photo Unblur feature on other photos — and the results were pretty amazing.

Likewise, the Pixel 7 introduces improvements to Super Res Zoom, a feature for cleaning up digitally zoomed-in photos that predates the Tensor chipset. Even though the Pixel 7 lacks a dedicated telephoto lens, it can turn to the 50MP main camera and use Super Res Zoom to crop down to a 12.5MP image when you opt for a 2x digital zoom

The Pixel 7’s 2x zoom of downtown Oakland shot across the San Leandro channel looks pretty good, even without the benefit of an optical zoom. The front of the image is as clear and precise as the zoom produced by the Galaxy S22’s telephoto lens, and you really have to look hard to find any photographic noise toward the opposite shoreline.

A little more fuzziness creeps in when we move to a 5x zoom, though the Pixel 7’s shot is still perfectly passable. The words on the Tribune Tower are just as legible in the Pixel’s shot as they are in the Galaxy S22’s photo. Both zoom photos are clearly better on the Galaxy S22, but the Pixel 7 is at least able to hold its own thanks to the revamped Super Res Zoom feature.

The Tensor chip doesn’t stop with smartening up photo features. There are everyday capabilities it enables, too. Perhaps you remember the Direct My Call feature that Google introduced with the Pixel 6, in which the Google Assistant could display a list of call directory options, sparing you from having to remember what number to press. With the Pixel 7, those numbers appear right away.

I put in a call to Home Depot’s 800-number, and a text directory appeared on my Pixel 7’s screen almost immediately after the automated system picked up the call. Google says it will be like that for a lot of popular toll-free numbers at launch, with more businesses being added over time.

Other examples of the Tensor G2’s improved smarts have materialized since the phone’s release. The new chipset can transcribe audio messages your friends text to you — handy when you’re in a place where you can’t play the message. A software update in December has brought more promised features, highlighted by the ability to label different speakers in the auto-generated transcripts of the Recorder app. (I still love the Recorder app, and it’s better than ever on the Pixel 7.) Clear Calling is going live, too, promising improved audio quality on phone calls.

➡️ The Shortcut Skinny review (1 min read)

Review Score: 4 out of 5

The Google Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro are here to complicate your smartphone buying decision in 2022 in the best possible way. Both of the new Pixel phones have superb cameras for nighttime photos (better than the iPhone 14 Pro), and the Pixel 7 Pro has a telephoto camera that can almost keep up with the more advanced Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra and Galaxy Z Fold 4 zoom lens hardware. It’s Google’s impressive software doing the hard work at a better price than its competition, starting just at $599.

No, the Pixel 7 series design hasn’t changed much over the Pixel 6, but year-over-year, new perks like Photo Unblur, Face Unlock, smoother video recording, and a higher screen brightness will make you want to consider upgrading from the Google Pixel 5 if you’re two years or more behind. Just know Google still hasn’t come up with a way to appease your friends on Apple’s iMessage who complain about Android’s green SMS bubbles. Also, transferring files to a Mac is cumbersome, so I caution iPhone and Mac users in the US before switching just for Google’s better camera.

Good news: The Pixel 7 and 7 Pro are $100 cheaper than their closest smartphone challengers (plus US stores like Amazon and Best Buy are offering up to a $200 gift card with a Pixel 7 Pro pre-order) and now there’s a new Google Pixel Watch that pairs nicely with any Android phone. Google’s homegrown Pixel lineup is finally illuminating as the name suggests, and consumers can only benefit from more options.

But the Pixel 7 Pro has a telephoto camera
