Привет, первый iPad
Такие разные и такие одинаковые: iPad Pro 2018 и iPad 1 поколения (2010 год).
Я впервые взял в руки iPad первого поколения спустя пару месяцев после легендарной презентации 2010 года. И увидел какой-то разжиревший iPod Touch.
Тогда только Джобс видел в устройстве будущее, и лишь к запуску второго поколения народ начал понимать, что вообще можно делать с айпэдом в быту.
По части промышленного дизайна iPad не было равных. Он отлично лежал в руке благодаря прямым граням. Поэтому с релизом второго поколения я немного растерялся, когда увидел, что боковины стали изогнутыми. Это неэргономично!
iPad должен иметь прямые грани. Никаких хитрых изгибов. Так его банально легче носить и юзать.
Собственно, поэтому я рад держать в руках iPad Pro 2018 года. С чего начали, к тому и вернулись: плоские грани, гладкий изгиб кромки. Так лучше. Приятно лежит в руке.
Apple, пожалуйста, пусть все айпэды будут такими всегда.
Раньше у меня был iPad mini 4. Не было причины обновляться: большие планшеты Apple казались какими-то несуразными. А теперь держу 11-дюймовую модель и думаю: наверное, пора моему «минику» на покой. Размеры-то меньше.
Не ощущаю, что планшет какой-то дичайше тяжёлый, но при этом чувствую всю монолитность корпуса. Это придаёт уверенности в том, что именно этот планшет разбить будет довольно сложно. Проверять это я, конечно, не буду.
Камеры, Face ID и периферия iPad Pro 2018 года
Как уже говорилось выше, в новых iPad Pro 2018 будет использоваться технология идентификации пользователя по очертаниям лица Face ID, что подразумевает и наличие функционала True Depth, портретного режима фронтальной камеры (7 МП), возможность создания Animoji, Memoji и прочих плюшек.
Face ID в iPad Pro работает в портретной ориентации.
Основная 12-мегапиксельная камера на задней панели может снимать видео в разрешении 4K, делать фото Smart HDR, сканировать документы и работать с приложениями дополненной реальности.

iPad Pro (2018) 12.9-inch Apple Pencil
The new Apple Pencil is now pricier, at $129, but it’s a big improvement over the original. For starters, it’s a cinch to dock this Pencil with the iPad Pro, thanks to a built-in magnet. The Pencil starts charging as soon as it attaches.
I tried shaking the iPad Pro hard with the Pencil attached, and it didn’t come loose. The Pencil also stayed put after I walked a mile with the iPad Pro stuffed in my backpack, but it did come loose one time while I was taking the tablet out of my bag.
The new Apple Pencil also feels better in the hand, as there’s a flat edge. Plus, you can activate various shortcuts with a double tap, such as quickly pulling up the eraser. And with a quick tap, you can go straight into the Notes app when the iPad Pro’s screen is off.
I handed the new iPad Pro to our deputy director of photography, Jef Castro, who also happens to be a great illustrator, and here’s what he said: «My favorite update, as simple as it may sound, is the flat edge, which felt much better in my hand and made for a better grip. I say this as someone who gets minor hand cramps from the previous Pencil after continuous use.»
Jef also liked all the improvements, from the magnetic charging to the double tap, which created a much smoother experience for him. Unfortunately, the Apple Pencil works with only the new iPad Pros; it’s not backward-compatible with previous iPad Pros.
Battery life
Apple said the iPad Pro should last all day, and it easily does. Using it to watch about five hours of Netflix on a plane only dropped battery life to around 75 percent. While editing photos in Adobe Lightroom CC with the Apple Pencil, battery life didn’t take too much of hit, hitting about 60 percent after a few hours. We’ve managed to stretch battery life several days using the iPad Pro like this in a pocket of a few hours at a time. Longer usage — as in if you work eight or nine hours a day with this device — will definitely see you needing to recharge daily.
The iPad Pro does take quite some time to fully charge up, though. It took around two full hours to go from 26 percent to 95 percent. We wish it was faster.

Открываешь текстовый файл с форматированием, картинками, прочими таблицами и прямо поверх всего этого добра делаешь пометки стилусом. Например, «тут поправить», «это убрать», стрелочки, кружочки — такие пометки.
Выглядит красиво, это эффективно, но главное — как это реализовано. Это не просто виртуальная калька, лежащая поверх основного документа. Все пометки привязаны к тому месту, которое подлежит редактированию. Вверху, например, можно добавить абзац текста, вставить медиафайл, а пометка, сделанная Apple Pencil, передвинется вместе с текстом. Простая и логичная вещь, которая мало где работает. Тут всё без проблем.
Всё бы ничего, если бы не один весьма существенный минус. Кто пользуется Pages, Numbers и Keynote? Практически никто. Внутри одного дизайнерского отдела или компании, где у каждого специалиста есть Mac, всё работает без проблем. А вот с внешним миром Pages и остальные фирменные редакторы совместимы мягко говоря… так себе.
Camera

The rear-facing camera on your iPad isn’t as important as the camera on your phone — but it’s still handy in a pinch. The front-facing camera, on the other hand, is probably going to be used much more regularly for video chatting.
Let’s start with the rear-facing camera, which comes in at 8 megapixels on the 9.7-inch iPad with an aperture of f/2.4, and 12 megapixels on the 10.5-inch iPad Pro with an aperture of f/1.8 The iPad Pro camera will be able to capture more detail and perform better in low-light conditions.
On the 2018 iPad, the front-facing camera comes in at 1.2 megapixels with an aperture of f/2.2. Those specs are a little disappointing in 2018. The front-facing camera on the 10.5-inch iPad comes in at 7 megapixels with an aperture of f/2.2.
The cameras on the iPad Pro are much better all-around.

Display
No prizes for guessing how big the iPad Pro 12.9 screen size is as, like the iPad Pro 11, the tablet is named for this key spec. It’s the biggest display you can get on an Apple device, making it great for a range of activities, from creating works of art to playing games.
The screen uses Apple’s new Liquid Retina display, as seen in the iPhone XR, which is a type of LCD intended to be nearly as sharp and colorful as an OLED display.
The display does show colors very well, as they’re bright and vivid, but the iPad Pro 12.9’s screen has the same problem as the iPhone XR’s, in that black reproduction just isn’t as good as it would be on an OLED display.

It’s also worth bearing in mind that the iPad Pro 12.9’s pixel density is noticeably lower than what you get on iPhones – the 2732 x 2048 resolution translates to 264 pixels per inch, which is lower than the iPhone XR at 326ppi or the iPhone XS at 458ppi, although you’ll likely be holding the tablet further from your face than you would a phone, so in practice the screen quality will be fine.
The real strength of the iPad Pro 12.9’s screen is the True Tone display, which measures ambient lighting and the setting you’re in, and subtly alters the display’s white balance accordingly. This meant the screen looked great whether we were working in a coffee shop, our dark bedroom, or out in the open air, and we never had to fiddle with the screen settings or brightness to find the right balance.

Networking and Battery
The iPad’s networking abilities are as fine as its processor performance. Like the iPhone XS Max, the cellular iPad Pro is based on the Intel XMM7560 modem, which can handle up to gigabit speeds. It has a physical SIM card slot and an embedded, software-configurable eSIM. They don’t both work at once, but you can switch between them. The physical slot supports all the US and Canadian carriers; the eSIM supports AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile, and you can pick a service plan right from the Settings app.
LTE-wise, the Pro supports a wide range of US and international bands, including all the bands that each of the major US carriers use. It have Sprint and Verizon’s old CDMA system in it, but that system is useless for data anyway, so it doesn’t matter. What matters is that it verifies on Sprint’s and Verizon’s LTE networks.

For Wi-Fi, it can do simultaneous 2.4/5GHz 802.11n/ac with 80MHz channels. It has Bluetooth 5.0. Connectivity is, simply put, excellent.
We still need to run battery tests, but we have no reason to disbelieve Apple’s quote of 10 hours of use at about half screen brightness, similar to the previous iPad Pro generation. This is shorter than some laptops we’ve seen, but most people find it adequate, and you can fast-charge the iPad with the largest USB-C power brick you can get your hands on (like the ones from recent Macs). It ships with a new 18W charger, but you should get a 30W charger, like the one Apple sells for $49, instead.

The most beautiful iPad to date
Shrinking down the bezels around a screen is something we’ve been seeing for quite some time across all products, from TVs and smartphones to tablets. The new iPad Pro does exactly that, cutting down the edges for a more modern look, and it looks beautifully symmetrical.
There are two iPad Pro sizes: An 11-inch model, which is the same size as 2017’s 10.5-inch iPad Pro thanks to the shaved bezels; and a 12.9-inch model, which is 15 percent thinner with 25 percent less volume than the largest iPad Pro of old, despite having the same screen size. We are looking at the 12.9-inch model here, but both iPad Pro devices share the same features.
The 12.9-inch iPad Pro feels massive in the hand, but it’s lightweight enough to become at least kinda manageable. The 11-inch is easier to maneuver – but we’ve fallen in love again with the 12.9-inch screen size. It’s a fantastic canvas, whether you’re drawing or watching a movie.
The flat edges help with grip, but the slimmed-down bezels do make it a little awkward to hold without touching the screen. The back has more of a matte texture now, and it’s much more pleasant to the touch.
Apple said it had to remove the headphone jack to keep the iPad Pro so thin.
One big change from slimming these bezels is the lack of a home button. All the new iPhones also cut it, so it’s hardly a surprise. Instead, you’ll navigate iOS with gestures akin to what you’ll find on the iPhone XS and iPhone X. It’s intuitive and easy to use, but more important is the new method of unlocking the tablet: Face ID.
Apple has brought over Face ID, and unlike the iPhone, the iPad Pro can unlock by detecting your face in any orientation it’s held. You won’t need to worry about keeping the iPad in portrait orientation or tilting your head sideways when the tablet is in landscape mode. It unlocks swiftly in any lighting condition, permitted your face is directly in from of the iPad. We’re quite satisfied with Face ID here, and we haven’t missed Touch ID or the home button at all (Apple is still selling the 10.5-inch iPad Pro if you do prefer the home button).
In portrait orientation, the volume rocker sits on the right edge with the power button up top. The same quad-speaker setup is still here, but there’s a crucial component missing — a headphone jack. While we’ve come to terms with the omission on the iPhone, we’re annoyed with its disappearance on the iPad Pro. Apple said it had to remove the headphone jack to keep the iPad Pro so thin, and the slimmer bezels didn’t leave a lot of room internally. It’s also Apple’s “wireless” philosophy, so it’s just the next step after taking it out of the iPhone in 2016. We think the headphone jack would still be a valuable option here, but if you have Bluetooth earbuds or headphones, you shouldn’t have any issues pairing them to the iPad Pro.

Another change is the positioning of the smart connector that lets you attach the iPad Pro to Apple’s Smart Keyboard or third-party keyboards. The connector is now on the back of the iPad instead of being on the bottom edge. This doesn’t really change any functionality of the iPad, but it does mean the Smart Keyboard also got a revamp. There are now two viewing angles, but we’re still not fans of the typing experience. The keys don’t deliver a satisfying click, and the fabric-like material isn’t pleasant to touch. It does silently manage to get the job done, but it’s too expensive at $200 for the 12.9-inch iPad Pro ($179 for the 11-inch). Take a look at alternative keyboard covers, though there aren’t many others available just yet.
If you want to use the iPad Pro as a laptop replacement, that puts the total cost close to $1,000 for the smallest iPad Pro. Apple is pricing its tablet up there next with laptops, but we think it could work on two things to improve usability: Add mouse support to iOS, or add a trackpad and improve the Smart Keyboard. While we love the touchscreen, our fingers aren’t the most precise tool to complete tasks, and a trackpad or a Bluetooth mouse would go a long way in making us work faster on the iPad Pro.

В FaceID задействуется в разы более количество точек. И сама по себе сетка мельче. Это нужно для распознавания всех особенностей лица. Для дополненной реальности это не нужно, тем более дальность действия FaceID куда меньше.
На практике в iPad Pro 2020 скорость распознавания пространства выросла в разы. Теперь больше нет необходимости вращать планшет, чтобы он точно отсканировал пространство.
Возросла точность трекинга и понимание планшетом пространства. Стало меньше ошибок, особенно при ручном перемещении объектов, когда ты перемещаешь в одной плоскости предмет. Но планшет из-за препятствий приближает или отдаляет объект.
В условиях низкой освещенности есть сложности с распознаванием окружающего пространства. iPad Pro 2018 вообще ничего не видит.
В полной темноте функция не будет вообще работать даже с LiDAR.
Вывод: все эти фишки необходимы в первую очередь разработчикам, чтобы они адаптировали свой софт под последнюю версию LiDAR. А то получается ситуация, когда планшет с крутым железом есть, а соответствующего софта под него еще пока нет
Экран iPad Pro 11″ не совсем такой же, как в iPhone XR
Экран всё-таки остался монолитным, правда, с немного загнутыми углами. Зато без выреза, как в iPhone Xs.
В iPad Pro 2018 установлен дисплей Liquid Retina, такой же, как в iPhone XR. Это гиперчёткий LCD-экран, в котором чёрный цвет стремится быть таким же, как в OLED.
Правда, лично я заметил, что экран в этом планшете настроен немного иначе. Это не передать на фото, но если положить два устройства рядом, вы увидите разницу.
Любопытно, что экран стал заметно ярче, чем в том же iPhone XR. Хотя технические характеристики у них полностью совпадают.

Ощущения от дисплея совсем другие. Разрешение дисплея Liquid Retina в новой «прошке» выросло до 2388×1668 пикселей, а диагональ увеличилась всего на 0,5 дюйма.
Быть может, я такой единственный, но мне иногда кажется, что дисплей этого «айпэда» матовый, а не глянцевый. Особенно хорошо это видно на обоях с цветами.
Цвета насыщеннее и контрастнее. Apple явно доработала дисплей в iPad Pro 2018. Это, пожалуй, лучшая цветопередача, которую я видел в LCD-дисплеях.
А яркость оказалась явно выше, чем я первоначально ожидал. Причём настолько она высокая, что даже невозможно словить ни одного отблеска. Ощущение, что экран поглощает весь поступающий в него свет.
Pro Motion и True Tone немного подкрутили. С новым Liquid Retina дисплеем True Tone начал восприниматься иначе. Цвета стали ещё мягче, но не настолько, чтобы размывать шрифты. За все время использования я не заметил, что глаза устали или сильно напряглись.
А частота экрана в 120 Гц, появившаяся в iPad Pro 10.5″, приятно дополняет впечатления от экрана этого планшета. Картинка суперплавная.
120Hz display, unrivaled performance
The iPad Pro’s display is breathtaking, using Liquid Retina LCD technology similar to the iPhone XR. The 12.9-inch offers 2,732 x 2,048 resolution, while the 11-inch model packs 2,388 x 1,668. ProMotion technology delivers a screen with a refresh rate of 120Hz, meaning you see incredibly smooth scrolling and an overall more responsive experience. It’s sharp, vibrant, and while blacks aren’t as deep as the OLED on the iPhone XS, this is still such an excellent display. We’ve had absolutely zero qualms with the screen in our testing; it’s fantastic for consuming and creating content.

The iPhone XS and XR have unrivaled performance thanks to the A12 Bionic processor. Apple has taken that up a notch with the A12X Bionic powering the new iPad Pro devices. There are eight cores, and the neural engine is present for speedy machine learning. Like the display, we’ve had no problems powering the latest games with the A12X Bionic, and it was able to perform intensive tasks like editing in Photoshop and Lightroom with ease.
Our benchmark test scores:
Geekbench 4 CPU: 5,029 single-core; 18,042 multi-core
These scores destroy the competition. The iPad Pro’s Android equivalent — the Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 — scored 6,423 for its multi-core performance and 1,891 in single-core. That’s not to say the Tab S4 was slow, but the iPad Pro is leagues ahead in what it can do. You won’t run into any problems here.
Apple made a lot of comparisons to the Xbox One, saying the new iPad Pro could deliver better graphics performance than the console. While the list is growing, we’d like for Apple to focus on bringing more graphics-intensive AAA games to the iPad Pro to truly make use of its performance. There are certainly a lot of great games on the iPad — Civilization VI, for example — but there aren’t a lot that utilize the full power of the tablet.
The iPad Pro comes in a variety of storage sizes, from 64GB for the base model to 1TB. The price for the new iPad devices has jumped, and we think Apple should get rid of the 64GB option and make the 128GB the base size.

Design and durability

Not surprisingly, the 2018 iPad and the 10.5-inch iPad Pro both feature a very Apple design sensibility. Perhaps the biggest difference here is their size — the iPad Pro is slightly bigger than the 2018 iPad in all aspects but one — thickness. If you’re looking for a super slim device, the iPad Pro may be a better choice for you. Another major difference is what colors the devices are available in — both come in space gray, silver, and gold, but the iPad Pro is also available in Rose Gold. Both devices feature a rear-facing camera on the top left, as well as a very minimalist design with a home button on the front.
These two devices are pretty much equally durable. Unlike the iPhone, the iPad series is not waterproof — so if you want to use it in the bath, be very careful while you do so.
Winner: Tie
В итоге. Кому брать, а кому подождать?
Не, всё-таки это действительно годный планшет. Пожалуй, лучший, который создавали в Купертино. Если изначально я относился к нему скептически, то сейчас всё изменилось.
Главные выводы:
1. Это планшет для владельцев совсем старых iPad Pro. Прошлогодние айпэды пока менять не стоит, не так много смысла.
2. Если есть сомнения, какой размер выбрать (11″ или 12.9″) — берите 11-дюймовый. Он легче, дешевле и не занимает кучу места. Можно спокойно носить с собой даже в самом небольшом рюкзаке.
3. Если нужен iPad для видосиков, соцсетей и веб-сёрфинга, остановитесь лучше на iPad 2018. Его хватит с головой!
4. Apple Pencil 1-го поколения не работает с новыми iPad Pro! Будьте готовы доплатить 10 790 руб. за новую модель.
5. Очень маловероятно, что вы задействуете даже 50% мощности этого iPad. И не берите планшет на 1 ТБ вслепую: забить столько памяти на нём практически невозможно.
Не забудьте взять к новому iPad Pro чехол Folio. С ним пользоваться планшетом будет заметно проще.
