Battery life and fast charging
Samsung retained the same battery as the Galaxy S22 Ultra. This means that the Galaxy S23 Ultra has a 5,000 mAh capacity battery, and you won’t find the charger in the box. The separately available charger for the Galaxy smartphone also charges with a maximum of 45 watts or 15 watts wirelessly. Reverse charging is also possible again.
Samsung does not even enter this quick-charging race, in which the Chinese competition in particular outbids each other. Maybe it is also a question of sustainability? What do you think?
While battery life was one of the major drawbacks of the Galaxy S22 Ultra, Samsung has corrected that with the S23 Ultra. The new flagship is very durable and was able to last up to 13:09 before dropping below 20% in our battery benchmark with the QHD+ resolution, 120Hz refresh rate, and 200 nits brightness.

For comparison, the Galaxy S22 Ultra only lasted 8:40 hours and it was quite difficult for it to last for an entire day with heavy use as shown in the following image.

Conclusion
The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra offers a virtually identical design to its predecessor, with only some minor changes. It also offers the same display size and specifications, as well as the same battery capacity.
As you would expect though, there are some differences. These come in the form of double the base storage, along with a chipset upgrade and an upgrade to the main camera sensor.

The Galaxy S23 Ultra delivers superb camera performance, though there is still certainly an argument to wait to upgrade this year if you already have the S22 Ultra. The S22 Ultra also probably makes more sense for those looking to save a little bit of money too, though the S23 Ultra of course is the winner on paper if you have the budget. Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra vs. S22 Ultra: Scant few other changes

Believe it or not, Samsung actually tweaked the design between the Galaxy S22 Ultra and the S23 Ultra. It’s incredibly subtle in pictures but, in person, the differences are much more obvious. While they retain an identical height, width, and thickness, the curved edges on the Galaxy S23 Ultra are flatter.
On the Galaxy S22 Ultra, each side is a perfect half-circle when viewed from the bottom of the phone. This makes the phone hard to hold especially because it’s a slippery glass-and-metal sandwich.
It seems odd that such a small change would make such a big difference but the S23 Ultra is significantly easier to hold because of its flatter edges. In the photo below, you can see the Galaxy S22 Ultra on the left and the Galaxy S23 Ultra on the right. Note how much flatter the S23 Ultra’s sides are.

Samsung launched One UI 5.1 with the Galaxy S23 Ultra but that update has since been dispensed to most other modern Samsung phones. Like One UI 5, One UI 5.1 is based on Android 13 but, as you might expect, it includes a few important features that are quite exciting. While most of these features are identical between phones, the Galaxy S23 series has one big exclusive feature: photo object lifting.

As you can see in the above GIF, lifting an object from an image is as simple as long-pressing on the person, animal, or other object that you want to separate from the rest of the image. This feature uses the new NPU — that’s a Neural Processing Unit — in the Galaxy S23’s processor to identify objects quickly and draw them out of a photo.
The other incredibly exciting feature in One UI 5.1 is Bixby Text Call. It’s the closest thing we’ve seen yet to Google’s exemplary Call Screening feature on Pixel phones. With Bixby Text Call, you’ll be able to tap a button and have Bixby answer the phone for you, including neat text prompts that you can tap to ask callers questions.
Galaxy S23 Ultra vs. Galaxy S22 Ultra: Software

The Galaxy S23 Ultra runs Android 13 out of the box, and based on our Android 13 review the upgrades are nice to have, but not monumental. This release focuses on things like stability, permissions changes and Material You design personalization, along with better privacy and security.
There’s also an updated media player in Android 13 and the ability to customize Bedtime mode to help your eyes adjust before going to bed. Other highlights include spatial audio support for the best headphones.
Samsung’s new One UI 5.1 software delivers a bunch of new upgrades, though it’s not clear which features are exclusive to the S23 Ultra. These include Bixby Text call for responding to incoming calls with a text; Bixby will literally answer the call for you in its voice and then you tell it what to say.
Other One UI 5.1 highlights include a Routines option for triggering a sequence of actions on your device and the ability to co-edit Samsung notes while on a Google Meet call.

As usual, choosing between two flagships is a balancing act between price and performance.
There’s no denying that the S23 Ultra’s camera is something to get excited about. If you’re a fan of photography or else enjoy capturing memories, then the S23 Ultra is probably worth it thanks to its 200 mega-pixel main sensors.
However, the S22 still seriously delivers in the photography department, and the fact that it has the same 5000mAh battery as the S23 Ultra also makes a strong case to opt for the older model.
Ultimately, it comes down to personal preference, and how much you’re willing to spend on your new phone.
Software and update policy
The Galaxy S23 Ultra runs Android 13 with the corresponding One Ui 5.1 interface. If you take a look at our , you will know that Android 13 is also running on the S22 Ultra. So, if you are looking for a really good reason to switch from the Galaxy S22 Ultra to the S23 Ultra, you will not find anything in this category.

The exception is, of course, the update policy. Samsung promises—as you know by now—four major Android updates. Thus, the Galaxy S23 Ultra will logically be supported for an additional year. The same applies to the five years of support in the form of security updates. Beyond that, you don’t have to go all out for exclusive features on the S23 Ultra that you won’t see on the S22 Ultra. And yes, that includes S Pen features.

The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra went on sale on Friday, February 17, 2023. That’s just shy of a year after the Galaxy S22 Ultra, which arrived on February 25, 2022.
With the global economy going a little downhill over the past 12 months, not everyone is going to be happy with the new Galaxy S23 Ultra’s pricing – especially if they recall how much the Galaxy S22 Ultra cost at launch.

The first thing to note here is that Samsung has done away with the 128GB entry model for the Galaxy S23 Ultra. This means one fewer storage and pricing option, but it also means that buyers are effectively getting more for their money.
US buyers are paying the same price for a 256GB Galaxy S23 Ultra as they would have a 128GB Galaxy S22 Ultra 12 months prior. They’re also paying $20 less for 512GB, and $20 more for 1TB (a Samsung.com exclusive).
UK buyers, on the other hand, are paying the exact same for a 256GB Galaxy S23 Ultra as they would have a 256GB S22 Ultra, £70 more for 512GB, and £100 more for the range-topping 1TB model. Apple’s UK customers have been similarly stiffed, so the problem clearly lies with the local economy and the relative strength of the US dollar, but it still stings.
In Australia, the price of a 256GB Galaxy S23 Ultra is AU$50 less than the equivalent S22 Ultra model, while a 512GB S23 Ultra is AU$100 more, and a 1TB one is $200 more.
It’s worth noting however, that stores are often now selling the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra at a discount, so in reality you’ll probably pay less for that phone than the prices above, but the exact discount will vary.

You should buy the Galaxy S23 Ultra if…

1. You want all the megapixels for your photos
Arguably, the highlight feature of the Galaxy S23 Ultra is its new 200-megapixel main camera sensor. That’s an improvement over the 108-megapixel main camera sensor on the Galaxy S22 Ultra.
When you take a photo using the new 200MP sensor, Samsung’s software will combine 16 pixels into one larger pixel. The end result will be clearer photos with more definition and information in each pixel, especially in darker environments.

At least, that’s what Samsung is promising early on. We’ll go hands-on with the phone over the coming days and, based on Samsung’s track record when it comes to delivering high-end camera experiences, have little doubt that won’t be the case here.
2. You’re due for an upgrade from your Galaxy Note
With Samsung a year ago, and with the addition of the S Pen to the S-series Ultra devices, it makes sense for the S23 Ultra to be an upgrade for former Note users whose phones are ready to retire.
The S23 Ultra’s S Pen is embedded directly into the phone, just like it does in Note devices from years past. Once removed, it triggers all of the same fancy software features that the S Pen is known for, such as Air Actions to notate a screenshot, or take notes in the Samsung Notes app.
In addition to getting a more modern «Note» experience, you’re gaining performance, camera and battery life boosts as well.

But first up: just how much will these devices cost you? As you can see in the live shopping widget below, the older S22 Ultra model is now well discounted from its original £1,149/$1,299/AU$1,849 price. Note that these prices are for the ‘entry’ model in the Ultra series.
The Galaxy S23 Ultra doesn’t retain the same price in the UK generation to generation, raising it by £100, or 9%, to £1,249. It’s a similar story in Australia, where the Galaxy S23 Ultra has also received a AU$100 price increase, now starting at AU$1,949. And seeing as the older device is so heavily discounted right now, that may make your purchase decision all the easier, especially if you’re looking to save around £/$500+.

Battery
This one’s easy; both the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra and S23 Ultra sport the same 5000mAh battery and 44W fast charging capabilities, which means there shouldn’t be any real meaningful difference in overall battery life.
However, that’s not quite true in real-world usage, with the S23 Ultra and its much more power-efficient Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy chipset offering a boost to overall battery life. We found that, even with the top-end resolution and high refresh rate enabled, the S23 Ultra didn’t struggle to last all day regardless of what we were doing.
That’s a bit of a different story compared to the Exynos-equipped Galaxy S22 Ultra that we found could just about make it to the end of the day with less than 10% charge remaining, with even Apple’s iPhone collection offering better battery longevity.

If you use your smartphone for all of your photo and video needs, then you’ll definitely want to consider going for the Galaxy S23 Ultra for certain upgrades. The S23 Ultra has the S22 Ultra beat with an impressive 200MP main camera sensor compared to the 108MP camera on the S22 Ultra. Other elements remain the same, like the 10MP resolution for both regular telephoto and periscope telephoto cameras (3x and 10x optical zoom, respectively), and the 12MP ultrawide camera is the same, too.
As you might expect, the increased megapixel count gives the S23 Ultra an edge, but it’s the zoom that really sets it apart from its predecessor. While megapixel counts are the same, the S23 Ultra’s zoom really has been improved, and the 30x zoom is starting to catch up to the 3x and 10x zooms. This is especially impressive when you consider the amount of software tuning that has to go into a 30x zoom. It really sets the new phone apart.

One odd change is in the selfie camera. Samsung decided to downgrade from the 40MP front-facing camera on the S22 Ultra to a 12MP on the S23 Ultra. Though 12MP is still pretty good for a selfie camera, it’s a bit of an odd choice by Samsung to downgrade the megapixel count so drastically from the previous generation.
The new phone takes this category. Samsung really committed to improving an already great camera system, and it succeeded.

Cameras
The cameras are the most important part of the Ultra phone, and neither phone disappoints. The Galaxy S22 Ultra has a 40MP selfie camera with autofocus, a 108MP primary camera, two 10MP telephoto lenses at 3X and 10X, and a 12MP ultra-wide lens that doubles as a macro mode.
The S23 Ultra shares these cameras with two exceptions — the selfie and primary cameras. The selfie shooter is now a brand-new 12MP sensor with autofocus and is shared with the other members of the S23 series. The lower megapixel count may look like a downgrade on paper, but with a sensor small enough to fit into a hole punch, the 12MP unit should take better photos, especially in low light.
The primary sensor has been upgraded from 108MP to 200MP. Now, bigger numbers don’t always mean better performance. But this 200MP sensor has been eagerly expected for a long time, and hopefully, Samsung has spent enough time perfecting it for this phone. The S22 Ultra suffers from shutter lag on the hardware side and over-sharpening on the software end, so hopefully, both of these things have been fixed in the S23.
Should you upgrade to the S23 Ultra?
From three-year-old phones like the iPhone 11 Pro Max or the S20 Ultra, the S23 Ultra will be a solid refinement on all fronts. You’ll notice primarily better battery life and more performance.
If you have flagships from 2021 or 2022, you will not notice too much difference unless you need the 8 Gen 2 SOC. The difference is even more noticeable if you’re moving from a midrange phone.
The S23 Ultra takes the best aspects of the S22 Ultra and improves upon them while strengthening its weaknesses. However, it’s still iterative and quite tiresome since there’s nothing remarkable about it.
Of course, if you’re an enthusiast who always wants the latest and greatest technology or has enough money to burn, the S23 Ultra will be a solid option.
Samsung has not raised the prices of the Galaxy S23 Ultra compared to last year’s S22 series. The Galaxy S23 Ultra starts at $1,199 for the 8GB+256GB variant.

Overall winner
While we will continue to update this face-off with camera samples, lab test results, and our real-world testing, there is no question that the Galaxy S24 Ultra is an overall better phone than its predecessor. That shouldn’t come as a significant surprise.
However, based on what we’ve seen so far, barring incredibly enticing trade-in offers, Galaxy S23 Ultra owners shouldn’t be looking to make the leap. While the cumulative upgrades make for a solid package, many of the changes would go unnoticed by most users.
If you are coming from the Galaxy S22 Ultra that is a more serious question as the battery life and performance jump delivered by last year’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 was already considerable and we expect that both will take another step forward this year. The AI performance has also been a considerable focus over these last two generations, so you are missing out on some features and speed enhancements delivered by the NPU.
For anyone currently using a Galaxy S21 Ultra or Galaxy Note 20, this should be an easy upgrade. Battery life has seen a transformative change over that time and you are also likely facing battery degradation if you’ve been using the phone for the last 3+ years. Overall performance, AI performance, and camera upgrades are also dramatically improved, so you’ve waited long enough.
