Решение оригинальное, но понятное – выступающий прямоугольник теперь меньше будет цепляться за ткань кармана, да и каркас станет еще более устойчивым.
При этом у двух младших моделей вспышка размещена отдельно от уголка, в корпусе. А вот у S21 Ultra панель с камерами оказалась довольно большой, там нашлось место и вспышке.
Задняя панель S21+ и S21 Ultra выполнена из матового стекла с защитой Gorilla Glass 7, а вот младшая модель получила корпус из пластика, пусть и нового поколения. Конечно же, производитель уверяет в его особой прочности и даже наградил названием Glastic (от glass+plastic). Опыт выпуска флагманов с пластиковой крышкой у компании уже есть – недавние Galaxy Note 20 и Galaxy 20 FE наглядное тому подтверждение.
Вся передняя панель отдана экрану, круглый вырез для камеры остался посередине. Стоит отметить и отказ от изогнутого экрана, эффектное решение слишком уж усложняет конструкцию и ремонт. Зато рамки оказались максимально узкими.

The S21 is one of the most powerful smartphones around. And if the rumours are correct, the S22 should be even more of a powerhouse.
It’s rumoured to feature Samsung’s 4nm Exynos 2200 chip with an octa-core processor, 8GB of RAM, and AMD RDNA 2 graphics. Samsung only unveiled the Exynos 2200 last month, so it would make sense to put it to work in its newest and best phone.
However, other rumours say the device will run on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 895 chip. For some of its devices, Samsung uses different chips in different regions, so chances are we’ll see some countries get an S22 featuring the Exynos chip, and others with a Snapdragon-powered S22.
Both chips are super powerful, so performance should be on a par.
It could be a treat for gamers, too. AMD’s RDNA 2 architecture (rumoured for the graphics chip inside the S22) is also the backbone of the graphics chip in the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5. That doesn’t mean the S22 will have the power of a next-gen games console, but it could turn out to be one of the most powerful gaming phones around.
What about battery? According to the huge leak that came our way recently, the S22 will have a 3700mAh battery, the S22 Plus a 4500mAh and the S22 Ultra a 5000mAh battery. In the case of the S22 and S22 Plus, those capacities are actually slightly lower than their S21 counterparts (4000mAh and 4800mAh, respectively). The S22 Ultra should remain unchanged, with the same 5000mAh battery as the S21 Ultra.
A lower capacity doesn’t necessarily mean a shorter battery life, though. Chances are Samsung will make the processor work more efficiently in order to squeeze as much life out of the device as possible.
Ice universe also claims Samsung is testing 65W, 45W and 25W fast charging (via ). The company previously introduced 45W fast charging when it launched the Galaxy S20 Ultra in 2019 – could it bring it back? Or will Samsung go a step further and introduce 65W fast charging capability?
Samsung Galaxy S22 vs S21: release date news

Again, it’s important to stress that Samsung hasn’t explicitly said that the S22 will launch on 9th February. But it has named that date as when its Galaxy Unpacked event will take place (traditionally, Samsung launches its next Galaxy S smartphone at Galaxy Unpacked). Prior to that announcement, Samsung also said in a blog post that it would launch its next Galaxy S device in February.
So it looks highly likely that the Galaxy S22 will launch today, which is a little later in the year than the S21. Samsung announced the S21 on 14th January 2021, and it then went on sale on the 29th of the same month.
Previous years have seen Samsung’s Galaxy S device launch as late as March, in order to get the jump on the Mobile World Congress trade show. But with more and more phone brands dropping out of Mobile World Congress again this year due to the ongoing pandemic, the show has less impact. So increasingly, Samsung is ‘doing an Apple’ and ploughing its own furrow.

The good news here is that the software experience between the Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S21 ought to be the same, at least for the most part. That’s because the S21 already has Android 12 and One UI 4 — the S22 will launch with the same Android version and One UI 4.1.

Obviously, when we reviewed the Galaxy S21 series, we analyzed an older software version. But based on our experience with One UI 4, the Galaxy S22 will certainly have a lot to say when it comes to Android. That’s because Android 12 introduced a host of new customization and privacy features, all of which Samsung has seemingly adopted and tweaked.
One area where the Galaxy S22 will stand ahead is in its support lifespan. That’s because it’s a newer device. Samsung has a 3 year/4 year standard update policy for all of its phones. But according to the press release we received, Samsung is bumping up that schedule to four years of Android updates. Samsung also says this policy will apply retroactively to the Galaxy S21.
Samsung Galaxy S22 vs. Galaxy S21: Performance and battery life
As with any new generation of device, the Galaxy S22 will obviously sport some stronger performance thanks to the latest chip from Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. In some international markets, the Galaxy S22 is expected to feature Samsung’s own Exynos 2200 chip.

The new system-on-chip isn’t a huge leap over the Snapdragon 888, the processor that the Galaxy S21 uses. In certain benchmarks, the performance boost is marginal at best. And that means Qualcomm still hasn’t caught up to Apple’s own A15 Bionic chip (the one in the iPhone 13 and what we expect to see in the upcoming budget-friendly iPhone SE 3). The official jury is still out on the Galaxy S22’s benchmarks, but we’ll have those in the coming days.
Benchmarks only tell one story, and we expect that most people will hardly notice a difference in performance between the Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S21. That’s how single-generation CPU leaps work. If you’re coming from Galaxy S20, S10, or an even older phone, that’s when you’ll notice a boost.

For batteries, the Galaxy S22 features a 3,700 mAh power pack, compared to the Galaxy S21’s larger 4,000 mAh battery. The Galaxy S22 Plus is powered by a 4,500 mAh battery, which is smaller than the Galaxy S21 Plus’ 4,800 mAh.
These smaller batteries give us pause, considering that the non-Ultra Galaxy S21 models weren’t exactly stellar in terms of battery life. In fact, the regular Galaxy S21 in its adaptive refresh rate mode was downright awful in the Tom’s Guide battery life test.

We hope Samsung has made some improvements here, but we’re still left wondering why Samsung would choose to use smaller batteries in the S22 and S22 Plus. (The Galaxy S22 Ultra has the same 5,000 mAh power pack as the Galaxy S21 Ultra.)
Performance and battery

Both the Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S21 are flagship devices. As you might expect, they are powered by the top flagship chipsets of their respective years. The Galaxy S21 was powered by the Snapdragon 888. By contrast, the Galaxy S22 is powered by the powerful Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset. The Galaxy S21 performed very well last year and garnered a favorable review. We didn’t have a single hiccup in any multitasking or gaming — and we expect the Galaxy S22 to continue with this amazing performance. There’s plenty of RAM with 8GB on board and you get 128GB or 256GB of storage, even if you don’t get a microSD card slot on either. However, there shouldn’t be any stutters in the UI or lags while playing games or multitasking.
That said, it might not last as long due to the lesser capacity of the battery. The Galaxy S22 packs a 3,700mAh battery as compared to Galaxy S21’s 4,000mAh pack. It can be a worrying sign, especially considering the Galaxy S21’s battery life wasn’t stellar. The adaptive refresh rate and efficiency of new chips can help, but we’ll reserve our verdict on the battery life for our full review.
While the company upgraded the wired fast charging support of the Ultra variant to 45W, the Galaxy S22 still stays at 25W. But considering the new smartphone has a smaller battery capacity, it should charge faster than the Galaxy S21. Still, this is a tie until we get more time with the Galaxy S22.

Should you upgrade from the Galaxy S21 Ultra to the Galaxy S22 Ultra?
Samsung
I haven’t tested the Galaxy S22 Ultra yet, but there’s little about the new phone that screams «upgrade» from a Galaxy S21 Ultra. The S Pen is a great addition, but it shouldn’t be a reason to upgrade unless it’s a must-have feature for you.
But don’t forget that Samsung and carriers have typically great trade-in offers that can dramatically reduce the price of the Galaxy S22 Ultra, especially if you have a recent phone like the S21 Ultra.
And if you’re coming from a smaller model but now want the biggest phone you can get your hands on, an upgrade to the Galaxy S22 Ultra makes sense.

The most obvious difference is with the new 4nm chipset: the in North America and China or the internationally.
According to Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 beats the S21’s by 20% in CPU performance, 30% in CPU efficiency, 30% in GPU performance, and 25% in GPU efficiency. It also supports faster AI, better imaging, and improved 5G compatibility. As for the new Exynos 2200, it uses AMD’s RDNA 2-based GPU with hardware-accelerated ray tracing, variable-rate shading, and «console-quality» immersive visuals — plus the same Cortex X2 cores found in the latest Snapdragon. And a new «dual-core NPU» allegedly will augment mobile imaging performance.
In practice, our parent company’s Future Labs benchmarked the Snapdragon-backed S22 and found only minor CPU improvements for Geekbench 5 over the S21 (1222/3341 vs. 1048/3302). But S22 GPU scores seem to greatly outdistance the S21, which promises good things for the gamers out there.
How much do these benchmarks actually matter? One could argue that S21 owners shouldn’t worry too much about falling behind if they don’t upgrade. The Snapdragon 888 remains a supremely fast device that powers most of the of 2021, and a new calendar year hasn’t suddenly made them obsolete. Still, the S22 has intangible improvements like faster AI processing and a universal modem, and mobile gamers specifically may find the upgrades like ray tracing appealing enough to switch.
Samsung also announced the Galaxy S22 will receive but retroactively added a year of extra support to the Galaxy S21 as well. So that’ll last through Android 15 and get security updates through 2026, giving it more than enough support to last.
Display: Galaxy S22 has a smaller but brighter display than the Galaxy S21
Although the new phones look similar to last year’s, the display sizes differ slightly. The Galaxy S22 has a 6.1-inch Dynamic AMOLED screen versus the Galaxy S21’s 6.2-inch Dynamic AMOLED. The Galaxy S22 Plus sports a 6.6-inch AMOLED panel, which is smaller than the 6.7-inch screen on the Galaxy S21 Plus.

While the resolutions have remained largely the same (FHD+), Samsung has improved the refresh rate capabilities for its new phones. The Galaxy S21 and S21 Plus could crank up their refresh rate to 120Hz, but could only drop down to 48Hz. That didn’t help battery life much, since both S21 models performed noticeably worse with their adaptive refresh rate modes active.

We’re not sure why Samsung shrunk the displays for the S22 models, though 0.1 inches is hardly much to get upset about. The most exciting thing is the wider range for the adaptive refresh rate mode. A 10Hz to 120Hz range is a good spread and should help the overall experience feel smoother on the Galaxy S22.

Purely in terms of specs, the Galaxy S22 beats the Galaxy S21, but not by a huge margin. The 2021 phone will likely run out of new stock soon, so now’s the time to snag one if you spot it at a low price and don’t care about the upgrades. But you’ll also find S22 carrier deals that let you , with especially good deals if you have a recent phone like the S21 to trade in.
But should you? You’re getting a new chipset, better cameras, and an extra year of support for close to «free.» But you’ll also have to commit to another couple of years on an expensive phone plan in exchange.
Most likely your better option is to buy directly from Samsung. Trading in the Galaxy S21, along with a $100 rebate, makes the 256GB S22 cost just over $400 with no carrier commitments. But even if that’s a great deal, the differences between the two phones may not fully justify even that cost. It depends on how much that GPU boost, improved camera quality, and more premium look appeals to you.

Still has four years of life leftThe Galaxy S22 is a step up over the S21, but not so huge a step that last year’s model isn’t still an excellent device. And thanks to its plastic frame, it could hypothetically last longer than the S22.
Battery
As part of the downsizing process, Samsung has reduced the size of the Galaxy S22’s battery from 4,000mAh to 3,700mAh.
That’s a little worrying, as the Galaxy S21’s was hardly considered massive. What’s more, as we’ve just discussed, the Galaxy S22’s upgraded processors aren’t hugely more efficient than their predecessors.
Additionally, we were a little underwhelmed with the Galaxy S21’s battery life in our review. We found that we could generally get through a full day of light to moderate usage without having to plug in, but more intensive days would see us coming up short before lights out.
Samsung hasn’t changed its underwhelming charging provision from the Galaxy S21, either. Both phones support up to 25W wired charging, which is well short of the 45W charger supplied in the Galaxy S21+, not to mention the 80W charger of the OnePlus 10 Pro.
Neither Samsung gives you the relevant power brick in the box, either.
In terms of wireless charging, both the Galaxy 22 and Galaxy S21 support up to 15W. Again, rival phones will give you much faster
Cameras
Just looking at the camera setup on the back, it’s hard to tell the S22 apart from the S21, as both have similar-looking triple camera systems. But it’s what inside those cameras that undergoes some changes.
So, we have triple cameras on both: wide, ultra-wide, and telephoto zoom cameras. Check out the table below with the detailed camera specifications:
The biggest change is the new 50MP main sensor on the S22, bigger than the previous model.
The telephoto camera which used to be a 64MP sensor that cropped in to zoom on the S21 is replaced with a native 3X zoom lens which promises cleaner zoomed in shots. There seem to be no changes in the hardware for the ultra-wide and the front cameras.
Take a look at some camera samples we shot on both phones:
During the day, the difference is subtle and both phones do a solid job with beautiful colors and plenty of dynamic range. The S22 tends to have slightly warmer colors, and the detail in the 3X zoom shots is definitely cleaner on the S22.
On the video front, Samsung is still one of few companies to support 8K video, and of course, you can record at lower resolutions like 4K60, 4K30, and 1080p on both phones as well.
Samsung also promises improved night time video recording and enhanced video stabilization that will work even at night.
