Galaxy S22 Ultra vs. Galaxy S21 Ultra: cameras

At first glance, the cameras on the S22 Ultra and S21 Ultra seem identical. On the back there are 108MP main, 12MP ultrawide, two 10MP telephoto cameras, plus a laser autofocus. On the front it’s a 40MP single selfie camera.
However, the wide camera in the Galaxy S22 Ultra now has a larger 2.4 micrometer sensor to capture more light; that’s up from 0.8 μm on the S21 Ultra. There’s also a new anti-reflective coating to reduce light flares. Other S22 Ultra camera highlights include AI Stereo Depth Map functionality for improved portrait photos and auto framing in video for detecting and tracking up to 10 people.

For pros, the Galaxy S22 Ultra has a new Expert RAW app available to use if you want to take shots with greater control over the settings and to save them in a more editable RAW format.
It’s also worth remembering that the Scene Optimizer mode is turned on by default in the Galaxy S22 Ultra’s camera settings. This mode aims to smartly enhance photos by tweaking white balance, colors, brightness and more. Usually, it would be best to switch this feature off, as it can overcook photos, but Scene Optimizer is now so good in the Galaxy S22 Ultra that you can keep it on.

При подключении к нашему монитору вывод видео осуществляется в режиме 1080p при 60 Гц кадровой частоты. Режимов работы два: дублирование экрана смартфона (Screen Mirroring) и работа в режиме Samsung DeX — вывод альтернативного рабочего стола.
На рабочем столе DeX могут работать большинство приложений Android.
Оптимизированные для Samsung DeX приложения можно установить из фирменного магазина. Управляющая панель в нижней части экрана убирается при выводе изображения на весь экран (например, при воспроизведении видео). Вывод на монитор осуществляется в истинном разрешении 1920 на 1080 пикселей и точка в точку с кадровой частотой 60 Гц.
Отметим, что одновременно с выводом изображения и звука можно по USB или по Bluetooth подключать к смартфону мышь и клавиатуру, превращая его в основу для рабочего места. Кроме того, читаются подключенные к адаптеру USB-накопители. Для физической клавиатуры поддерживаются переключение языка и ряд горячих сочетаний клавиш. Поддерживается также подключение к проводной сети на скорости 1 Гбит/с.
Для тестирования вывода изображения видеофайлов на экран самого устройства мы использовали набор тестовых файлов с перемещающимися на одно деление за кадр стрелкой и прямоугольником (см. «Методика тестирования устройств воспроизведения и отображения видеосигнала.
Версия 1 (для мобильных устройств)»). Снимки экрана с выдержкой в 1 с помогли определить характер вывода кадров видеофайлов с различными параметрами: варьировались разрешение (1280 на 720 (720p), 1920 на 1080 (1080p) и 3840 на 2160 (4K) пикселей) и частота кадров (24, 25, 30, 50 и 60 кадр/с).
Примечание: Если в обоих столбцах Равномерность и Пропуски выставлены зеленые оценки, то это означает, что, скорее всего, при просмотре фильмов артефактов, вызванных неравномерным чередованием и пропуском кадров, или не будет видно совсем, или их количество и заметность не будет влиять на комфортность просмотра. Красные отметки указывают на возможные проблемы, связанные с воспроизведением соответствующих файлов.
По критерию вывода кадров качество воспроизведения видеофайлов на экране самого устройства в режиме с частотой обновления экрана 60 Гц очень хорошее, так как кадры (или группы кадров) могут выводиться с равномерным чередованием интервалов и без пропусков кадров.
Отметим, что в адаптивном режиме удалось получить вывод изображения видеофайлов с частотой 120 кадр/с. В этом режиме для файлов 24 кадр/с вывод идет с равной длительностью кадров, и даже есть какая-то подстройка частоты обновления под частоту кадров в видеофайле (например, для 90 и 100 кадр/с), но работает она не очень хорошо. В целом польза от режима 120 Гц при воспроизведении видео есть.
При воспроизведении видеофайлов с разрешением 1920 на 1080 (1080p) на экране смартфона в ландшафтной ориентации изображение собственно видеофайла выводится точно по узкой границе экрана, заходя на загибы. Четкость картинки высокая, но не идеальная, так как от интерполяции к разрешению экрана никуда не деться.
Впрочем, можно ради эксперимента переключиться в режим один к одному по пикселям, интерполяции при этом не будет, но проявятся особенности PenTile: вертикальная мира через пиксель будет в сеточку, а горизонтальная — чуть зеленоватой. Отображаемый на экране диапазон яркости соответствует фактическому для данного видеофайла.
Правда, при снижении яркости в тенях появляется завал, и он немного увеличивается при дальнейшем снижении яркости. Отметим, что в этом смартфоне есть поддержка аппаратного декодирования файлов H.265 с глубиной цвета 10 бит на цвет, при этом вывод градиентов на экран осуществляется с гораздо лучшим качеством, чем в случае 8-битных файлов.
Камера и фотографии
S21 Ultra оснащен мощной квадрокамерой, включающей основной модуль с разрешением 108 Мп. Благодаря большому датчику изображения и оптической стабилизации, этот смартфон способен создавать четкие и детализированные фотографии даже в условиях недостаточного освещения. Кроме того, устройство обладает телефотокамерой с оптическим зумом в 10-кратное увеличение, а также широкоугольным объективом и макро-объективом.
Однако, S22 Ultra, судя по слухам и утечкам информации, будет лучше S21 Ultra в плане камеры. Ожидается, что новый флагманский смартфон Samsung получит обновленные модули с более высоким разрешением и улучшенными оптическими системами. Также говорится о наличии новых функций, таких как оптическая стабилизация, фазовый автофокус и возможность съемки видео в разрешении 8K.

Samsung Galaxy S22 vs. Galaxy S21: Display and case
If we were to place the new and old models next to each other, we only see minor design changes in the S22 and S22+ compared to their predecessors. The screen size has decreased by 0.1-inch across diagonally in each case, whereas it remains at 6.8-inches in the Ultra models. The camera array also sees a slight revision in the base model and the Plus variant.
The S22 Ultra stands out here as well, which no longer relies on the raised island as it seamlessly transitions into the casing. Instead, Samsung relies on a design in which the lenses are free-standing and remotely reminiscent of a spider’s eyes.

We have to praise Samsung for the fact that has now also equipped the basic S22 model with a glass back. All three devices thus come with Gorilla Glass Victus+, and all models, regardless of whether they are from 2021 or 2022, are also IP68-certified and lack a slot for memory expansion.
The S22 Ultra, by the way, was released by Samsung as a legitimate heir to the now-discontinued Note line. This includes the more angular shape known from the Galaxy Note and of course, the S Pen. Support for the S Pen was already available in the S21 Ultra last year, but this year’s implementation of the S Pen is so much better as it is embedded into the smartphone itself and supports Bluetooth!

The Galaxy S22 and S22+ are available in four colors: Phantom Black, Phantom White, Green and Pink Gold. The colors look great, but the monochromatic S22+ looks more boring than the predecessor with its applications in another color. The Ultra comes in the same colors, except for Pink Gold, with Burgundy replacing it. Additional colors are available online if that’s not enough for you.
The displays have not changed in terms of resolution or refresh rate. The latter now fluctuates between 1 and 120 Hertz, depending on the requirements. However, the adaptive refresh rate advertised by Samsung turned out to be misinformation as the base models sport a range of 10 to 120 Hertz. Here, the hardware manages anywhere from 48 to 120 Hertz. Furthermore, at least the Ultra’s display has now become brighter: You get up to 1,300 nits with the two smaller models, while the Ultra now goes all the way up to 1,700 nits, doing a whole lot more than the already very bright 1,500 nits on the S21 Ultra.

The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra changes up the design compared to its predecessor and assumes a look similar to that of the Galaxy Note. It comes with a squarer frame than the S21 Ultra, curved edges and an S Pen built into the frame, rather than just support for one.
The camera housing on the rear is also different to the S21 Ultra, switching from a housing to standalone lenses on the rear. On the front, the S22 Ultra has a centralised punch hole camera at the top of the display.
The Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra features rounder edges than the S22 Ultra. It has a rectangular camera housing in the top left rear corner, featuring three main lenses, a smaller lens and a sensor and flash module.
Both devices offer IP68 water and dust resistance. The S21 Ultra supports the S Pen, but it doesn’t have one built into the body. Like the S22 Ultra, the S21 Ultra has a punch hole camera at the top of the display.
Performance and connectivity
Glancing over each phone’s spec sheet, the two devices look virtually identical. In the S22 Ultra, the chipsets are newer and the charging is slightly faster, but the camera hardware is mostly unchanged. The S22 Ultra is available with a new 1TB tier, but there’s a surprising downgrade hidden in the storage options, as it has less RAM than the previous generation. The S21 Ultra featured 12GB of RAM for the 128GB and 256GB models, while the 512GB variant included 16GB of RAM. In contrast, the S22 Ultra starts at 8GB for the 128GB entry point, while all other options get 12GB of RAM.
Losing the 16GB option shouldn’t be an issue for most buyers since that may be more memory than you need in a phone. But for $1,200, 8GB on the base model doesn’t look great. Day-to-day performance is still good, but the base-model S22 Ultra has a lower capacity for multitasking than the base-model S21 Ultra. We’re also a little worried about how eight gigs might perform by the time the phone reaches the end of its update timeline in 2027. If you plan to keep your S22 Ultra as long as possible, it might be worth springing for a model with 256GB or more storage. Those have 12GB of RAM.
The Galaxy S21 Ultra and Galaxy S22 Ultra support 5G connectivity on all compatible US carriers, including sub-6, mmWave, and C-band. The S22 uses a newer modem in the Qualcomm X65, which gives it higher theoretical max download speeds of up to 10 Gbps. The S21 Ultra’s Qualcomm X60 modem tops out at 7.5Gbps. That won’t matter in real use; even over mmWave, you’ll likely never bump up against either of these ceilings.

Cameras
Camera specs look almost identical on both phones, but the S22 Ultra has some improvements over the S21. Specifically, the 108MP primary sensor has a wider aperture and an improved lens that lets it collect more light and limits lens flare. Like its predecessor, the S22 Ultra produces 12MP photos using pixel binning. However, there’s a difference this year. In addition to the multiple 12MP images combined into the final result, the S22 captures a full 108MP image that is merged in for added detail.
Image stabilization and the S22 Ultra’s low-light capabilities have also improved. Also, both of the S22 Ultra’s telephoto cameras get new IMX754 sensors. Even though they’re the same resolution as before, improved processing means shots should look brighter and sharper.
Price, availability, and specs
The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra launched at a starting MSRP of $1,200 in 2022. It’s since been replaced by the Galaxy S23 Ultra as Samsung’s premier flagship phone; however, the older model is still available from retailers like Amazon and Best Buy and directly from Samsung. You’ll typically find it for close to $1,000 now, and prices have fallen as low as $800 during sales.
The S21 Ultra cost the same $1,200 when it launched in 2019, but it isn’t as easy to find. It’s no longer carried by major retailers or sold by Samsung.

Galaxy S22 Ultra vs. Galaxy S21 Ultra: S Pen
Both the Galaxy S22 Ultra and Galaxy S21 Ultra support S Pen input. However, the key difference is that the Galaxy S22 Ultra comes with the stylus and a holster for it in the phone. The Galaxy S21 Ultra’s compatible S Pen is sold separately, and has to be stored separately, or in a handful of compatible Galaxy S21 Ultra cases.

Both phones let you scribble and doodle to your heart’s content with the S Pen, including writing notes without turning on the phone with Off Screen Memo or signing documents. The S22 Ultra does however boast a lower 2.8-millisecond latency for a more natural writing experience and improved handwriting-to-text conversion. The S21 Ultra has a 9 ms latency.

В таблицу обычно добавляется несколько других аппаратов из различных сегментов, также протестированных на аналогичных последних версиях бенчмарков (это делается лишь для наглядной оценки полученных сухих цифр).
К сожалению, в рамках одного сравнения нельзя представить результаты из разных версий бенчмарков, поэтому «за кадром» остаются многие достойные и актуальные модели — по причине того, что они в свое время проходили «полосу препятствий» на предыдущих версиях тестовых программ.

Samsung Galaxy S22 vs. Galaxy S21: Performance and connectivity
In Europe, the Exynos 2100 act is followed up by the Exynos 2200 SoC, and there is also an expected update in other regions where the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 is tipped to be featured instead of the Snapdragon 888 SoC. It is becoming apparent that the performance of the Samsung SoC could be inferior to that of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. However, we will also discuss whether there really is such a striking difference and how much better the new smartphones perform compared with the S21 series in tests.
There was almost nothing new in terms of storage: 8 GB of working memory and the choice between 128 GB and 256 GB in the S22(+) remained the same as last year. There was even a downgrade in the Ultra: Instead of 12 or 16 GB, the options are 8 and 12 GB of working memory in 2022. In return, the option to select the S22 Ultra with 1 TB of storage has been added this year.
Let’s briefly talk about connectivity: Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2 were only available for the Ultra last year. This year, all three devices benefit from it. Otherwise, everything remains the same as last year. You will again be able to enjoy 5G connectivity and NFC, of course.
Battery life and charging
The S21 Ultra and S22 Ultra both have 5,000mAh batteries. How that’ll translate into time between charges depends on how you use your phone, but either should last through a full day of moderate use without needing a top-up. On the other hand, with lighter usage, both should last two days. At least, that was the case when the phones were new; batteries deteriorate with repeat charge/discharge cycles. So if you got your S21 near the time it launched, it might be showing its age in this department by now.
The S22 Ultra charges faster than the S21 Ultra. The newer phone has a peak charging speed of 45W compared to the 25W max on the older S21 Ultra. The difference isn’t that pronounced in practice — you’ll need a compatible PPS charger to hit these top speeds, and the S22 Ultra’s charging slows down considerably as the battery fills. The main consideration here should probably be how well your S21’s battery is holding up.

Хоть Samsung и изменила внешний вид панели с камерами, характеристики камер не изменились. Процессор Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 позволяет записывать 8K-видео с частотой 60 кадров/с, а на Galaxy S21 Ultra есть ограничение в 24 кадра/с. У обоих смартфонов 108 Мп основная камера, выдающая качественные 12 Мп снимки и хорошо фотографируют в темноте.
Стала лучше система обработки изображений. Оба смартфона поддерживают 10-кратный оптический и 100-кратный цифровой зум. В некоторых ситуациях это действительно полезно.

If you’re trying to decide whether to buy the latest Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra phone or save some money and buy the year-old equivalent, you’re probably better off going for an S22 Ultra since it’s a lot easier to find at its basic price. You get better cameras, a brighter and more versatile display and an S Pen built in.
However, spending another $1,200 just a year after paying for an S21 Ultra seems like a lot even with a trade-in, given the S21 Ultra still offers excellent performance, photography abilities and a great display, plus the option of a separate stylus if you want one.
The S22 Ultra is really best for those who have an older phone and are looking to upgrade. You might be able to find the S21 Ultra for less, but overall we’d go for the S22 Ultra.
