The Galaxy S22 Ultra camera is stellar
The S22 Ultra takes the zoom on the Note to another level with two telephoto cameras at 3x and 10x which offers more flexibility when you can’t physically get closer to your subject. The Note 20 Ultra only has 5x optical zoom. The newer phone can also zoom up to 100x whereas the Note caps out at 50x, though I wouldn’t recommend using either unless you absolutely have to (or you have a tripod) as results can get a bit messy.
Both phones also have a 108-megapixel main rear sensor, using a technique called pixel binning to generate more manageable 12-megapixel files. In good lighting, I could hardly tell the difference in shots taken on these phones, but it does look like Samsung has tweaked the image processing algorithm a bit to give the S22 Ultra photos a touch more contrast and saturation. When taking photos at 108 megapixels, the S22 Ultra definitely produces a sharper shot, with less falloff around the edges of objects compared to the same image taken on the Note 20 Ultra.
The newer phone also excels at portraits much more than the Note 20 Ultra as it’s able to distinguish between fine detail like hair and separate it from the background that falls out to blur. Selfies too look a bit cleaner and have better dynamic range on the S22 Ultra, most likely thanks to the newer 40-megapixel sensor compared to the 10-megapixel version on the Note.
The differences in low-light images weren’t as dramatic as I was expecting, though the main rear camera on the S22 Ultra does produce shots that look a little more true-to-life using night mode. The Note 20 Ultra brightens the scene entirely, whereas the newer phone has a bit more nuance and shadow detail. Video at 4K also appears to be a little cleaner on the newer phone, but the difference is marginal to my eyes.

The Galaxy S22 Ultra may be an S series phone, but its design and built-in S Pen make it a Galaxy Note in all but the name. Comparing the specs of the Galaxy S22 Ultra with the Note 20 Ultra isn’t exactly cut and dry. While the newer S22 Ultra features some of the latest display, camera, and chipset advancements, there are also some downgrades when compared to the Note 20 Ultra, making for a confusing package.
Sure, you get a more powerful chipset found on many of the of 2022, but the tradeoff here is that the base model S22 Ultra only comes with 8GB of RAM as opposed to 12GB on the base Note 20 Ultra. And you’ll have to fork over more dough if you want that 12GB variant, which is a tough pill to swallow given the already expensive price tag. And unlike the Galaxy S21 Ultra, the S22 doesn’t reach the 16GB max, only topping out at 12GB of RAM.
That said, this may not be a big deal for some. In fact, our Jerry Hildenbrand notes that , although it’s nice to have. Still, this could be a dealbreaker for power users, given the phone’s price tag.
There’s also no microSD card slot meaning your storage options are limited to what Samsung offers. Pre-order deals meant you could purchase the phone at its base price and get a nice upgrade on both storage and RAM at no extra cost, but that’s only for anyone that purchased the device before February 24, 2022.
Other annoyances you’ll have to deal with have to do with the design. While it may appear much improved to some (although that’s subjective), the phone is a bit heavier than the already hefty Galaxy Note 20 Ultra at 229g, and that’s not including a case. You’ll also likely want to check out some of the because the new rear camera design can get very dusty.
Samsung S22 Ultra vs Note 20 Ultra — Which is better?
It would be very easy to arrive at this point, hold our hands up and say the S22 Ultra is the better phone — which it is. But, it’s certainly not the better purchase at £1149.
The S22 Ultra does add a couple of handy features — a bit more battery life, 100x zoom rather than the 50x on the Note 20 Ultra — but you’re paying a hefty price for smaller, iterative upgrades.
With the Note 20 Ultra, you can save yourself a minimum of £500 buying with reboxed, and you won’t really miss anything from the S22 Ultra.
If you’re still keen on the S22 — we’d highly recommend to wait until they hit the refurbished market so you can bring the cost down (and rehome an existing phone rather than buying new).

Samsung S22 Ultra vs Note 20 Ultra — S-Pen Screen AND Features
Finally, Samsung have stopped hogging the S-pen for Note users, and brought it to the Galaxy S series — although it’s only on the S22 Ultra, it’s a start.
But does is there a difference between it and the Note 20 Ultra?
No. Well, mostly no.
Although you’re getting slightly fast writing speeds due to the faster connectivity in the S-Pen on the S22, we couldn’t notice a day to day difference at all — and if anything, we noticed the S-Pen on the older Note 20 Ultra lasted a little bit longer — although you’re highly unlikely to need to charge the S-Pen while using it (it charges inside the device — handy!).
Now, obviously you want to know about that slab of glass you interact every day — the screen.
In terms of size, you’re essentially getting the same screen here with only 0.1 inches difference between the two — and both supporting 120HZ refresh rate (if that’s a load of tech talk to you — it makes your screen look real smooth).
The only advantage for the S22 Ultra is it supports LTPO refresh rates, which means it can drop the rate down when the screen isn’t moving (for example, reading an article online) this gives the S22 a bit of a head start in battery life, which we’ll come on to shortly.
Lastly — for you power users out there, the Note 20 Ultra offers expandable storage, something that’s fallen by the wayside with recent Android devices.
Not only does this give you more space for music, videos and the rest — if you’re a budding photographer/filmmaker, you can swap out memory cards to your heart’s desire. Take that, new phones!

The Galaxy Note 20 Ultra may be a 2020 smartphone, but it still holds its own in 2022 thanks to its fantastic performance, great cameras, and reliable updates from Samsung. While it may not have the same versatile camera array as the S22 Ultra, the 5x telephoto zoom is a nice balance between the 3x and 10x cameras on the S22. Plus, you get more base RAM and expandable storage.

The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra is the spiritual successor of the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra in almost every way but the name. It features a similar chassis with square corners and rounded edges, a large display, impressive cameras, a built-in S Pen for note-taking, Bluetooth controls, and more. The two phones are very similar, making upgrading from Note 20 Ultra a tough decision for many reasons. That said, the Galaxy S22 Ultra also takes some of the best features from the Galaxy S21 Ultra and adds them into the mix, which could make for a more compelling smartphone.

Deciding between these two phones isn’t exactly simple because they’re so similar. If it weren’t for the rear camera design, you’d think these were the same phone. As far as performance and camera quality, they also are pretty much on par, given the age of the Note 20 Ultra and certain hardware tradeoffs with the S22 Ultra. That said, with the S22, you get the added benefit of four OS upgrades and five years of security updates, meaning you may be holding onto this phone for a long time. The Note 20 Ultra is promised three OS upgrades, which means Android 13 may be its final version.
The S22 Ultra isn’t cheap, landing in at $1,200, though there are plenty of promotions and deals that can help lower that price to make it more affordable. The question for those that already own the Note 20 Ultra is whether or not it’s enough of an upgrade to justify the cost.
If you’re looking to upgrade from the Note 20 Ultra, we might recommend it, depending on your needs. Those looking to purchase a new phone may prefer the S22 Ultra simply because it’s newer and gives you the latest and greatest that Samsung has to offer for 2022. However, if you’re adamant about the expandable storage and RAM situation, and wary of the extra cost, then this phone may not be right for you. That said, if you manage to find the S22 Ultra cheap, it may be worth a second look.

It’s not the newest flagship, but for a phone that was released in 2020, the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra is still a beast. It already runs the latest version of Android and is capable of producing impressive images with its triple camera setup.

The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra is the company’s top-of-the-range device in terms of camera load out. It comes with a 108-megapixel main sensor with f/1.8 aperture, coupled with a 12-megapixel ultra wide angle sensor and two 10-megapixel telephoto sensors.
One of the telephoto sensors is capable of 3x optical zoom, while the other offers 10x optical zoom. The main sensor is also 23 per cent larger than the Galaxy S21 Ultra’s main sensor so it should deliver great results. On the front, there is a 40-megapixel sensor.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra vs. Note 20 Ultra The upgrades

As you might expect from a modern flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S22 Ultra features some of the best specifications you can find in 2022. Not to mention, the built-in S Pen gives it that extra kick to stand out among Android flagships. That said, the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra was no slouch when it launched in late 2020 and continues to impress today.
The new Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset in the Galaxy S22 Ultra is two generations ahead of the Snapdragon 865+ found in the Note. The 3GHz primary core gives it plenty of horsepower, while the 4nm node makes for a much more efficient device. Aside from Qualcomm’s new chip, Samsung also outfits the device with the new Exynos 2200, which also builds on a 4nm process while paired with an AMD-powered GPU for improved gaming performance. The new chips mark a boost in performance over the previous generation of flagship chipsets, which themselves are also more powerful than the Snapdragon SoC in the Note.

Alongside the new chipset is an upgraded 108MP primary camera sensor. While this is the same size as the Note 20 Ultra, Samsung brings some new capabilities to the sensor to improve its output. Both phones capture 12MP nona-binned images, which combines nine pixels into one for improved light capture, but the S22 Ultra adds an extra ingredient to the concoction with Adaptive Pixel. This captures both a full 108MP image and a 12MP image, combining to bring both improved detail and light. Samsung also touts its Nightography, which brings low-light photos to life.
Both phones are outfitted with built-in S Pens, which is the main draw. The stylus brings more functionality to the smartphone for productives and artists and even works as a handy Bluetooth remote for taking images and other functions. The S Pen on the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra was already impressive thanks to its low 9ms latency. However, Samsung has pushed the envelope even further with the S22 Ultra, bringing the latency down to just 2.8ms, which makes it feel like you’re writing on paper. This is further enhanced by the improved LTPO display, which adjusts the phone’s refresh rate from a high 120Hz to just 1Hz.

Samsung S22 Ultra vs Note 20 Ultra — Camera comparison
Let’s kick off with the camera.
Straight up, you’re not going to have any qualms with either of these when you’re taking a quick snap — but for you eagle eyed photographers out there, you may see a bit of a difference.
The image below (Note 20 Ultra) has some nicely boosted saturation, which really enhances the detail and makes it an affordable Instagram worthy camera.
Not only that, but the laser autofocus really helped us get a quick snap in a fast moving environment.
Here the S22 Ultra doesn’t seem to capture quite as much detail, and mutes a lot of the colours — not the best for getting a quick pic for social media, but if you like to edit your pictures, the S22 Ultra may be best for you.
The S22 Ultra also has a 1.7x larger sensor, so for lower light pictures you get a bit of an advantage on the S22 — but not as much as you’d think considering the price difference.
If you’re just looking for a decent everyday camera overall though, shockingly, we’re going to have to go Note 20 Ultra here.

Игровой смартфон со встроенным вентилятором охлаждения
Одна из новых функций, о которых говорят в сети, — это активный режим вентилятора. В мае 2021 года обнаружилось, что Samsung Electronics зарегистрировала торговую марку на это имя, которое относится к смартфонам и планшетам.
Уже есть несколько игровых смартфонов со встроенным вентилятором, например Lenovo Legion Phone Duel и Nubia RedMagic 5s. Поэтому не исключено, что будущие устройства Samsung также будут оснащены охлаждающим вентилятором.

Несколько пользователей S21 Ultra сообщили о проблемах, связанных с перегревом в сети, поэтому нельзя исключать, что ищется надежное решение. Встроенные вентиляторы уже много лет успешно используются в персональных компьютерах и ноутбуках. Идеально подходит во время интенсивных игровых сессий, которые сильно требуют от процессора и, следовательно, могут вызвать перегрев.
