Of the three models, the Google Pixel 6 has limited worldwide availability. Out of the three models, the Pixel 6 is the most recent release and deserves to be highlighted with the lowest launch price: $599 before taxes.

Launched in September, the iPhone 13 has the best performance among the three models on this list and has a strong camera software. Out of the three models on this list, it is most certainly my recommendation for those who want to use the device for content creation, highlighting the Cinematic Mode. On the other hand, the iPhone 13 is the most expensive option on this list, but it is also the smartphone with the longest lasting software support among the three.

Finally, the Galaxy S21 is the variant of this comparison list that is closest to having a successor released, which should hit the market in the first quarter of 2022. However, this is also the only one that offers a triple camera module, with the telephoto lens being the highlight. Right now, this is also the smartphone that can be purchased for the lowest price in this comparison.

Both the iPhone 13 and Galaxy S21 are pleasant to behold, with a sleek shape and a shiny aluminum chassis that peeks through in all the right places. The iPhone 13 does boast the newest ceramic shield screen that has proven to be the toughest anti-crack screen on any smartphone. The Galaxy’s Corning Gorilla Glass Victus is also tough with a good anti-scratch surface, but it cracks easier than the iPhone’s ceramic shield. The iPhone also has a glass backing, which makes it feel a little heavier and more substantial in the hand, while the Galaxy has a lighter, polycarbonate feel. The designs are similar in quality but look quite different side by side.

When it comes to color choices, the iPhone 13 has five to choose from including the new pink colorway. The Galaxy offers four colors with an interesting iridescent quality on the surface. The smooth plastic looks nice but might be more susceptible to scratches than the frosted glass backing on the iPhone 13. On the other hand, you don’t have to worry about the polycarbonate backing on the Galaxy cracking when dropped.

It’s important to note that the iPhone 13 still has that conspicuous black notch in the display. I know that this is necessary for TruDepth FaceID technology, but it does take away from the streamlined look of the design. I feel like the Samsung Galaxy display looks bigger and more modern without it. To be honest, however, if I have to choose between FaceID or a notch, I’ll take the notch. I’m hoping one of these days they’ll figure out to support TruDepth camera tech without the black notch.

Specs and performance

Apple has been dominating its Android rivals on the performance front for years now, so it’s no surprise to learn that the iPhone 13 trounces the Samsung Galaxy S21 FE for pure power.

When it launched the iPhone 13, Apple claimed that its six-core A15 Bionic processor was 50% faster than the Android competition. While the Galaxy S21 FE wasn’t around at that point, the Snapdragon 888 it runs on most certainly was.

In our own CPU and GPU benchmarking tests, Apple’s A15 Bionic tends to beat the Snapdragon 888 by a healthy margin.

Not that this really matters much in practical terms, with both phones feeling as crisp and snappy in the hand as you could hope for. High-end games run fluidly on the highest settings in both cases, and general navigation is a joy.

Indeed, the Galaxy S21 FE might just feel the faster of the two given its 120Hz display, even if its processor is the more limited.

If you’ve detected a sense of disappointment surrounding the Galaxy S21 FE’s performance, it’s got nothing to do with the actual experience of using it. Rather, it’s because the Snapdragon 888 is yesterday’s chip, with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 now rolling out in higher-end Android phones.

Conversely, the iPhone 13 will continue to be among Apple’s fastest performers – and one of the fastest phones on the market – deep into 2022. Given the iPhone 13’s greater headroom, as well as Apple’s legendary legacy support, it’s likely to stay feeling faster for longer.

When it comes to storage both phones start at 128GB and double up to 256GB. But the iPhone 13 also comes in a 512GB variant – though as stated already, you’ll have to pay a lot more for the privilege.

The iPhone 13 is likely to level the display playing field, at least where the iPhone 13 Pro models are concerned. The iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max are both rumored to be getting adaptive screens of their own, matching the S21’s most valuable feature. We wish the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini were joining the fun, too — they’ll feature the same old 60Hz screens, the rumor mill claims — but at least it’s a step in the right direction for Apple.

When it comes to the user interface, we’re faced with three distinctly different major software experiences. While the Pixel 6 and Galaxy S21 run on Android 12 with Samsung ‘s device still in beta, the iPhone 13 features the latest version of iOS 15.1.

Galaxy S21 vs Pixel 6 vs iPhone 13: Battery and charging technology

Another reflection of Apple’s software-hardware integration is in the battery, with the iPhone 13 equipped with «only» a 3,227 mAh battery versus the Galaxy S21’s 4,000 mAh and the Pixel 6’s 4,614 mAh batteries, respectively.

In reviews by the NextPit team, the iPhone 13 generally offers enough battery life for a day’s use, while this remains one of the weak points of the Galaxy S21 as pointed out by editor Benjamin Lucks.

First impressions of the Pixel 6 show a decent battery life but without the same efficiency found in the iPhone 13.

When it comes to battery charging, all three devices have average performance that lies far from what Chinese manufacturers offer. Here they are in increasing order, following the battery capacity: the iPhone 13 at 20 W; the Galaxy S21 at 25 W, and the Pixel 6 at 30 W.

All three smartphones are compatible with the Qi wireless charging standard, compatible with power up to 15 W. In the case of the iPhone 13, you can only with MagSafe chargers that are certified by Apple. As a plus, both the Galaxy S21 and Pixel 6 offer reverse wireless charging, allowing you to charge the batteries of your earbuds, smartwatch, or even another Qi-compatible smartphone.

Otherwise, the S21 and its 4,000 mAh battery lasts about 6.5 hours on our test, where phones surf the web continuously over cellular until they run out of power.

Apple tends not to put big batteries into its phones, though that’s rumored to be changing with the iPhone 13. Recent leaks suggest each iPhone 13 model will have a larger battery than its iPhone 12 equivalent. That’s good news because apart from the iPhone 12 Pro Max, the iPhone 12 lineup performed below the industry average on our battery test.

The iPhone 12 offered 20W wired charging, which is slower than the Galaxy S21’s 25W charging speed. We haven’t heard if Apple plans to speed things up for the iPhone 13, though one rumor claims the iPhone 13 won’t support reverse wireless charging like Samsung’s Galaxy S21 models do. Apple is also unlikely to reverse its decision on not including a charger with its phones, though the Galaxy S21 models also shipped without a charger.

The Samsung Galaxy S21 FE hit shops on January 7, 2022, almost a year after the rest of the Galaxy S21 family. It was a little tardy, to say the least.

Prices start from £699 / $699 / AU$999 for the 6GB RAM/128GB storage model, rising to £749 / $769.99 / AU$1,099 for 8GB RAM and 256GB.

You don’t really think of Apple and Samsung as waging a price war, but that’s sort of what’s materialized in the past year. It started with Apple lowering the price of its entry-level iPhones to the point where the iPhone 12 mini now lets you get your foot in the Apple ecosystem for $699.

Samsung must have taken note because after the S20 lineup started at $999, it dropped prices on all three S21 models by $200. The Galaxy S21 costs $799 — the same as the iPhone 12 — while the Galaxy S21 Plus matches the iPhone 12 Pro’s $999 cost. The Galaxy S21 comes with a 4,000mAh battery on the inside. The iPhone 13, on the flip side, includes a 3,240mAh battery. Most of you know that iOS handles battery consumption differently compared to Android, so it doesn’t require as large of a battery. That being said, how does the battery life compare on these two phones. Well, for most people, both devices will be able to offer more than enough battery life.

With the Galaxy S21, we’ve been able to cross the 6-hour screen-on-time mark on most days. At that time, the battery charge wasn’t exactly high, so keep that in mind. The iPhone 13 does offer better battery life, you should be able to cross the 7-hour mark. Do note that your mileage may differ quite a bit, as there are a ton of aspects that determine battery life. Also, keep in mind that we didn’t exactly play games during our usage, only some light games from time to time.

The iPhone 13 retains the dual-lens setup of the iPhone 12, with no significant hardware changes to note. This means it offers a 12-megapixel wide camera lens and a 12MP ultrawide lens, with the same aperture sizes as we saw with last year’s model. However, the iPhone 13 does in fact provide its wide lens with sensor‑shift optical image stabilization, something that was previously seen only with the iPhone 12 Pro Max and its wide lens. This offers greater image stabilization, meaning you’ll end up with usable photos in a greater number of cases.

Similarly, the camera setup on the S21 is all but identical to that of the Galaxy S20, with both offering a triple-lens formation that includes a 64MP telephoto lens (in addition to 12MP wide and ultrawide lenses). Nonetheless, Samsung has said that enhancements in the image signal processor in its new chipset and new processing software make better use of the raw data captured by sensors.

Having said that, the S21 performs equally as well as the S21. Its photos are usually impressive in good lighting, with strong colors and clarity. At the same time, processing improvements have toned down the sometimes excessive and overly warm colors visible with the S20. Unfortunately, the S21 continues to struggle in low-light conditions, with the selfie camera in particular lacking detail in less-than-ideal environments.

When it comes to the iPhone 13, its camera builds on the iPhone 12, which already had a fantastic camera. Shots are natural and well-balanced, there’s the ability to choose easily from a variety of styles to suit different tastes, and it handles pretty much every situation and environment very well. This includes nighttime conditions, meaning that the iPhone does indeed edge out the S21 overall.
