The iPhone SE famously delivered premium-level performance at uncommonly low cost (at least for an Apple smartphone). As fast as it is, the iPhone 12 Mini still outperforms it. This is largely because the iPhone 12 Mini comes with the latest A14 Bionic processor, while the SE uses last year’s A13. Both chips are highly capable, but the A14’s use of 5nm technology means that it can use a significantly greater number of transistors, which boosts its performance compared to the A13.
The iPhone 12 Mini also looks like it will come with 4GB of RAM, as opposed to the 3GB of the iPhone SE. This hasn’t been confirmed by Apple, but reports elsewhere suggest this is the case, so you should expect a noticeable difference in speed between the two phones. This gap won’t be massive, but it should be detectable, with the iPhone 12 Mini handling apps, games, and multitasking more smoothly than its older sibling.
It’s worth pointing out that both phones provide 64GB of internal storage as standard, and that they also lack a microSD card slot. You will therefore have to pay extra to buy the versions of either phone with more internal memory, assuming you need more memory.
Battery life is a hard one to comment on, since Apple doesn’t release its battery specs. However, details have leaked from regulatory documents, which suggest that the iPhone 12 Mini houses a 2,227mAh battery. This compares favorably to the 1,821mAh battery used by the iPhone SE, which our review found to have fairly average longevity, lasting only a day under moderate usage.
As with the previous round, pretty much every category suggests that the iPhone 12 Mini offers superior performance. This assessment may change after we review the phone in full, but for now, we’re giving another win to the iPhone 12 Mini.

Design
Apple’s decision to use 2018’s iPhone 8 design for the iPhone SE 3 disappointed a lot of its fans. This is not the design language that people expect from a smartphone in 2022, even if it costs around $400. Android smartphones in the same price bracket look much better; look at Google’s Pixel 5a.
So if you think the iPhone SE’s ancient design is a deal-breaker, then the iPhone 12 mini is exactly the budget iPhone you’re looking for. You get the modern iPhone design with the Face ID notch and a near-bezel-less screen. Its edges are squared off, it lacks a physical Home button, and overall it’s more visually appealing.
One important thing to note here is that the iPhone SE (2022) is slightly smaller than the iPhone 12 mini. But despite being bigger, the SE still sports a smaller display, and you can blame the chunky bezels at the top and bottom for that. As you can tell by now, the iPhone 12 mini easily takes the cake with design.

- The quality and design of the display.
- The importance of leading-edge tech like mmWave 5G, Ultra Wideband, and Face ID.
- Low-light shots and advanced camera features.
If you place any of those things in high regard, you’ll want to opt for the iPhone 12 mini. There’s just no competition with the iPhone SE when it comes to the display, design, and premium features, and it’s well worth the extra money you’ll pay for the iPhone 12. If paying over $600 for a phone won’t break the bank for you, or if you’re buying something you hope to keep for four or five years, we think you’ll be a lot happier with the iPhone 12 mini.
However, if you miss Apple’s old design and hate the notch, the iPhone SE is still an excellent phone at $429. It’s not just the cheapest iPhone you can buy, it still brings some high-end features such as wireless charging and portrait mode and performs nearly as well as the latest thousand-dollar iPhones. It’ll get updated for years too—probably longer than the iPhone 12 mini—so whether you’re going to replace your iPhone in just a year or two or are particularly rough on your phone and don’t want to spend a lot of money on something that’s bound to get beat up, go for the iPhone SE.

Экран
Айфоны не отличаются по плотности пикселей, хотя разрешение экранов разное. Совпадает и максимальный уровень яркости, он составляет 625 нит. Оба экрана с IPS-матрицами, поддержкой цветового профиля DCI-P3 и True Tone, когда цветовая температура дисплея адаптируется под освещение.
Физические размеры дисплеев заметно отличаются: если у iPhone SE диагональ 4,7 дюйма, то у iPhone 11 она целых 6,1 дюйма. Обработать фотографии, поиграть или смотреть видео на большом экране значительно комфортнее для глаз. Судя по знакомым, ценителей маленьких дисплеев остаётся всё меньше — люди переходят на смартфоны с большими диагоналями без сожаления.

iPhone 12 mini и 13 mini
«Самые маленькие флагманы 2021 и 2022 года» — так можно назвать mini-версии 12 и 13 «айфонов». Они получили такую же начинку, что и старшие флагманы Apple, но в компактном корпусе. «Миники» существенно отличаются друг от друга лишь возросшим на два часа, согласно официальному сайту Apple, временем автономной работы и улучшенной видеосъемкой в 13 mini.
Покупать mini-версии можно тем, кого не притягивают большие телефоны, но хочется максимум возможностей в компактном корпусе. А вот переплачивать за два часа автономности и немного улучшенную камеру в 13 mini $300 не стоит. Лучше взять 12 mini — дизайн тот же, а запаса мощности хватит на два-три года вперед.

In our eyes, the biggest difference between the two is the 12 mini’s edge-to-edge display, putting it in-line with Apple’s new flagships rather than the older Touch ID-toting models from a few years ago.
Anyone who uses Face ID quickly comes to realise how quick and painless unlocking your phone is, albeit when not wearing a mask. Touch ID is by no means bad but Face ID is just that much smoother, quicker, and better. It’s classic Apple.
Other design differences derive from the models these iPhones are based on. As mentioned, the SE is based on the iPhone 8, with a rounded-off design and home button, while the 12 mini is based on, you guessed it, the iPhone 12, giving it the new (and rather beautiful) squared-off edges and larger display.
Which iPhone you prefer is totally a personal choice although we would note that the iPhone 12 mini is physically quite a bit larger than the SE, so if size is your absolute priority then the choice becomes a little bit easier.

iPhone 12 Mini has 5G support
The iPhone SE is 4G-enabled while the iPhone 12 Mini, like its three siblings, is 5G-enabled. It’s part of the first crop of iPhones to get this much-hyped feature. Paying that extra money for the iPhone 12 Mini ensures that your phone is future-proof as 5G continues to roll out this year and next. But 5G coverage is patchy across the US, and your experience will vary depending on where you live. Some areas have absolutely zero coverage, while other parts (especially big cities) have 5G networks from all major US carriers, meaning you can enjoy speeds nearly twice as fast as 4G. Either way, it’s important to research the 5G coverage in your area to help get a sense of the kind of experience you can expect.

7. Battery
Since these are two compact smartphones, battery performance is not their strong point. However, Apple has managed to improve the battery performance of the iPhone SE 3 over the previous generation by equipping a slightly larger 2018mAh battery. This still isn’t necessarily a great option, but coupled with the efficiency of the A15 Bionic chip, the iPhone SE (2022) can last an hour longer on average than the older model.
Meanwhile, the iPhone 12 mini has a larger battery, 2227mAh which, despite its smaller size, allows it to last up to an hour more battery life than the iPhone SE (2022). While the A14 Bionic isn’t as efficient as the newer A15 chip, the power efficiency of the OLED screen makes up for this weakness.
iPhone 12 mini vs iPhone SE: Design and display
The iPhone SE carries forth the design of the ancient iPhone 8, while the iPhone 12 mini features the newer “all-screen” design, with flat sides and an edge-to-edge display. It also comes in five colors—black, white, red, green, purple, and blue—as opposed to just three with the SE midnight (black), starlight (white), and red. There’s no doubt the 12 mini is a better-looking phone. It’s also just a little bit smaller and lighter, making it the smallest iPhone you can buy. But it’s not like the iPhone SE is a clunker, and you can probably get by with just three color options.

The display is much better on the iPhone 12 mini, though. The fact that it doesn’t have big bezels above and below the display means that, despite being a technically smaller phone, the iPhone 12 mini actually has more screen area than the iPhone SE (5.4 inches versus 4.7 inches). It’s not just the size, however. The iPhone mini also uses Apple’s best display tech, OLED, which brings tremendous contrast with deep blacks and higher resolution (476 pixels per inch vs. 326 pixels per inch).
Our pick: When it comes to the display, you really get what you pay for. Since you’re going to be looking at your phone’s screen hour hours each day, the extra $200 is definitely worth it. However, the iPhone SE still has a very good LCD, so if you still have a soft spot for the home button and the classic design, you’ll definitely be happy with it.

It’s quite obvious which is the “better” iPhone here. While the iPhone 12 mini has an older processor, it’s still plenty fast, and the best of the upgrades more than make up for it: an HDR OLED edge-to-edge display, an ultra-wide rear camera, a better front camera, 5G mmWave support, and Face ID. So, if you just want to get the “best” small iPhone no matter that cost, you can stop reading now: the iPhone 12 mini is where it’s at. But the iPhone SE isn’t your typical “budget” phone. Savvy readers will look at the vast difference in price and consider just how many of these features they really need.

The iPhone SE 3 (2022) costs £419 ($429, AU$719) for the 64GB model; £469 ($479, AU$799) for the 128GB model; and £559 ($579, AU$969) for the 256GB model.
The SE 3’s release date is Friday 18th March, with pre-orders going live the week before on the 11th March, 1pm GMT / 8am ET / 11pm AEDT.
The iPhone 12 Mini launched at £699 ($699, AU$1199) for the 64GB model; (£749, $749, AU$1479) for the 128GB model; and £849 ($849, AU$1449) for the 256GB model. However, now that it’s a couple of years old, you can usually find iPhone 12 Mini for less, bringing today’s price more in line with that of the iPhone SE 3 (2022).
On average, the iPhone Mini 12 is more expensive than the iPhone SE 3 (2022), but you can order a 64GB iPhone 12 Mini from Apple today for about the price of a 128GB iPhone SE 3 (2022), so there is considerable overlap in price depending on which model you’re interested in.

To have a nearly borderless screen, Apple had to remove the Home button, which means sacrificing Touch ID on the 12 mini. However, Face ID has improved to the point where it works equally well, even when you’re wearing a mask.
However, choosing to use Face ID or Touch ID depends on personal preference. Some users prefer Touch ID, while others prefer Face ID. Most users want both of these features in future iPhones, with the fingerprint scanner built into the power button, like the iPad Air.
So, if you’re a big fan of Touch ID, you can lean towards the iPhone SE 3. But if you want to keep up with the times, you’ll be satisfied with the Face ID sensor on the iPhone 12 mini. Either way, both options offer top-notch security.
iPhone 12 mini vs iPhone SE: Design
The iPhone 12 mini and iPhone SE show the two different design languages that Apple’s used over the last decade. The iPhone SE is the older version, with a home button and big top and bottom bezels, while the iPhone 12 mini has the signature iPhone notch and no home button. Both are made of the same aluminum that Apple rates as «aerospace-grade.»
Plus, the iPhone 12 mini has flat sides (compared to the iPhone SE’s curved edges) which I think looks better, as I’ve seen this style in the iPad Pro. Also, I bet the flatter sides will make the newer iPhone easier to hold.

Ditching the bezels also enables the iPhone 12 mini to be more portable, while still offering a larger screen. That’s right, the 5.4-inch iPhone 12 mini (5.2 x 2.5 x 0.3 inches, 4.8 ounces) is smaller and lighter than the 4.7-inch iPhone SE (5.5 x 2.7 x 0.3 inches, 5.2 ounces). That smaller size will also likely help the iPhone 12 mini fit in your palm better.
But learning what Apple’s changed beyond that aesthetic look gives many a reason to pay the premium for the iPhone 12 mini. Tired of cracked screens? Apple’s partnership with Corning (the folks behind Gorilla Glass) has led to the iPhone 12’s new Ceramic Shield front, which the company claims gives you «4x better drop performance,» vs. previous iPhones. That should translate to seriously improved durability. We anticipate plenty of iPhone 12 drop tests.

The iPhone 12’s design also gives you improved water resistance, as it’s able to survive deeper submersion. Apple rates it for surviving depths of up to 6 meters for 30 minutes, while the iPhone SE can only go 1 meter, for the same length of time.
While the iPhone SE and iPhone 12 mini are both available in black, white and Product (Red), the latter is also available in two new colors: a light green and a dark blue. Both look great on screen, but we’ve yet to see them in person.

iPhone 12 Mini’s display is larger, more premium and more durable
The display is one of the major differentiators between the two iPhones. The iPhone 12 Mini has a 5.4-inch display, while the iPhone SE 2020 has a 4.7-inch screen, making it the smallest (screened) iPhone currently available.
The iPhone 12 Mini also has an all-around better display than the iPhone SE. It has an OLED panel that’s advertised to have four times better drop protection than the LCD screen seen on the iPhone SE, thanks to a new ceramic-hardened glass display.
iPhone 12 drop tests conducted by CNET Senior Editor Vanessa Hand Orellana concluded that the Ceramic Shield is «as tough as it sounds.» The iPhone 12’s screen survived without a crack after it was dropped six times on a sidewalk, including three back-to-back drops from a height of 9 feet. We haven’t yet conducted a durability test on the iPhone SE, which has Gorilla Glass on the back and the front, but it’s expected to perform similarly to the iPhone 8, given it has a similar design. In that case, the iPhone 8 suffered a cracked screen when it was dropped from 5 feet.
