Samsung Galaxy S21 vs. Galaxy S20: Cameras
Other than fast-refreshing displays, no Galaxy S20 feature commanded as much attention as the cameras on those older phones — particularly the high-end array Samsung introduced with the Galaxy S20 Ultra. That particular model featured a 108MP main camera along with a zoom lens capable of delivering a 100x «Space Zoom» for greater details on shots. Unfortunately, the S20 Ultra camera also ran into some autofocus troubles triggered in some part by those demanding specs.

Samsung learned its lessons, and the Galaxy S21 Ultra reflects that. The 108MP main sensor returns in the new version of the phone, as well the telephoto lens and its 100x zooming ability. For optical zooming, the S21 Ultra features two telephoto lenses — one with a 3x zoom and the other capable of 10x optical zoom.

This time, though, Samsung has included laser autofocus to address any focusing issues; the feature certainly helped the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra produce great zoom shots.
In addition to those cameras and sensors, the Galaxy S21 Ultra rounds out the camera array with an ultra-wide-angle lens. This gives Samsung’s most expensive S21 model a four-camera array on the back. Meanwhile, the S21 and S21 Plus feature a more common three-camera setup — a 12MP main lens, 12MP ultra-wide shooter and a 64MP telephoto lens. Like the S21 Ultra, these two phones add a Zoom Lock feature that keeps zoomed shots in better focus — an improvement over the Galaxy S20 lineup.
Cameras
Both phones come with triple-lens camera systems, including a standard wide lens, an ultra-wide lens, and a 3x zoom lens that’s capable of digitally zooming up to 30x.
Both phones take similar quality photos overall, with the Galaxy S21 doing a slightly better job at managing HDR, contrast, and Samsung’s usual lust to overly boost brightness. Here’s a photo taken with the Galaxy S20 FE:

Being a newer «full-fat» flagship model compared to the «skimmed» Galaxy S20 FE, the Galaxy S21 has better camera hardware and more features. Most notably, the Galaxy S21 has a 64-megapixel zoom lens that can also be used to take higher-resolution non-zoomed photos than the Galaxy S20 FE’s 12-megapixel lens. Both phones have optical-image-stabilization (OIS) that help steady the shot when you take a zoomed photo, but it was clear during testing that the Galaxy S21 has a better implementation of OIS than the Galaxy S20 FE, especially when zooming in up to 30x. With that said, the Galaxy S21’s better OIS doesn’t produce better results. Here’s a photo taken with the Galaxy S20 FE’s zoom lens with 30x zoom:

The Samsung Galaxy S21 has a 6.2-inch AMOLED display, which is the same as the Galaxy S20, meaning no changes in screen size.
The Galaxy S21 also sports the same 120Hz variable refresh rate that the S20 also offers. There was talk of the S21 offering a brighter screen with a maximum brightness of 1400nits, but this still needs to be confirmed.
The Galaxy S20 has a resolution of Quad HD+ — though it is set to Full HD+ by default. It also has curved edges as we mentioned before. The Galaxy S21 meanwhile, has a Full HD+ display and flat edges so you’ll get less detail than on last year’s model, but only if you have specifically chosen to set the S20 to the Quad HD+ resolution.

Камеры — как бы новые, но как бы и нет
Переходим к самому вкусному. Тут с одной стороны появилась камера на 64 Мп, которая отвечает за зум. Последний, правда, трёхкратный и попутно гибридный, так как приближение работает за счёт обрезки 64-мегапиксельного кадра до 12 Мп.
Galaxy S20 Ultra
Основная же камера представлена теми же самыми 12 мегапикселями. Ну как теми же? Матрица наконец-то обновилась (впервые за четыре года!). Теперь её размер подрос до 1/1.76 дюйма. Раньше была с ноготок — 1/2.55 дюйма, а это уже ни в какие ворота. В 2020-ом всё-таки живём! Однако есть и даунгрейд. Например, в Galaxy S10 была переменная диафрагма: лепестки то раскрывались до f/1.5, то сужались до f/2.4 — автоматика подгоняла объектив под окружающее освещение и другие нюансы. В Galaxy S20 объектив с постоянной светосилой, причём далеко не самой светлой на рынке — всего лишь f/1.8.
Стоит ли всё это наших переживаний? Не думаю. Уверен, Samsung подтянули качество съёмки. Другой вопрос — насколько сильно. В Galaxy S20 Ultra, например, всё очень серьёзно. Там стоит огромный модуль на 108 мегапикселей, плюс алгоритмы, плюс 10-кратный гибридный зум и вот это всё. На этом фоне обычный S20 выглядит блекло. Что ж… зато он дешевле. И компактнее.
Чуть было не забыл! Теперь даже младший S20 умеет снимать 8K-видео. Пока оно ни нам, ни вам ни к чему. Но не сегодня, так завтра подешевеют телевизоры и мониторы с таким разрешением, тогда заживём. Благо, топовый контент можно пилить уже заранее — сегодня. Технологичненько.
Part 2: Galaxy S21 vs. S20: Display
Surprisingly, the Samsung S21 and S20 are very similar in terms of their display. Both devices possess identical designs, a 6.2In AMOLED screen, an in-screen unlock fingerprint sensor and a 120Hz refresh rate. The only notable difference is their camera, weight, and pixel density.
The S21 feels heavier than the S20 and has a lesser pixel density of 421ppi than the S20’s 563ppi. Overall, nothing fascinating about the S21 display makes it stand out next to the S20.

За производительность отвечает топовый 5-нм процессор Exynos 2100: он быстрее прошлого поколения на 20%, а графика на 35%. ИИ-процессоры в 2 раза мощнее.
Сканер отпечатков пальцев под экраном стал в 1,7 раза больше по площади в сравнении с прошлой версией.
Теперь подробнее о камерах.

These are big phones and they have big batteries to match. The S21 follows in its predecessor’s footprints with a large 4,000mAh battery; as before the Plus and Ultra models get even bigger batteries to go with their larger screens.
Both the Galaxy S20 and the Galaxy S21 support fast charging at 25W, wireless charging at 15W, reverse wireless charging at 4.5W and USB Power Delivery.
Last month, Samsung was spotted deleting a recent Facebook advert that mocked Apple for not including a charger with the iPhone 12. Now we know why: the Samsung Galaxy S21 doesn’t come with a charger either. But unlike Apple, Samsung owners aren’t going to need to buy a new one to match a new kind of cable: if you’re upgrading from the Galaxy S20 you can use your new phone with your existing charger.
Samsung says while the battery is the same as before, the S21 should deliver better battery life thanks to its more efficient processor and its AI-powered energy saving.

Samsung is here with the Samsung Galaxy S21, and between a striking visual refresh and some strategic upgrades — and sidegrades — it’s drawing a lot of attention. However, is it worth the hassle of trading in your year-old Galaxy S20 for the new model? The short answer: yes, so long as trade-in prices stay as high as they are.
The long answer is more complicated. The Galaxy S21 might not be a traditional upgrade, but it’s certainly a practical one for all but the niche cases, which we’ll outline below.

If you were hoping that upgrading from the S20 to the S21 would mean upgrading all the cameras, we’re sorry to disappoint: the S21 has the same three camera setup as before. The only Galaxy that’s getting a big camera upgrade so far is the S21 Ultra, whose four-camera setup includes a 108MP sensor.
The S21’s camera system may not be different from the one in the Galaxy S20, but it’s still a superb system – and it’s still better than many rivals. It’s a 64MP+12MP+12MP (telephoto, wide-angle and ultra-wide respectively) with 3x hybrid zoom, 30x digital zoom and optical image stabilisation (OIS). The 64MP camera has a f/2.0 aperture, the wide-angle f/1.8 and the ultra-wide has an aperture of f/2.2. Storage permitting, the Galaxy S20 can shoot video at up to 8K. The selfie camera is 10MP with a f/2.2 aperture.
There are some big changes in the camera software. The new Director View enables you to record video using your front and rear cameras simultaneously, displaying live thumbnails for each lens so you can see what your phone is seeing, and Single Take 2.0 makes it easy to capture with multiple cameras simultaneously to create effects such as dynamic slow-mo.
A case for an upgrade: The new design
In my opinion, Samsung has managed to do one thing right in particular with all three Galaxy models: introduce a fresh and, above all, unique design language. This is mainly due to the camera bump, which merges into the case on both sides of the S21, the S21 Plus and the S21 Ultra. This makes the hump look much more discreet.
My feeling is that the camera bumps are a bit less protruding compared to the Galaxy S20 anyway. Yes, the S21 Ultra’s camera module still takes up a large chunk of space, but that’s just simply unavoidable (for the moment) when using periscope lenses. Then again, the transition into the body makes the phone easier to grip.

The S21 series also managed to stand out from other smartphones thanks to its new colours. For me, the Samsung Galaxy S21 Plus thoroughly deserved to pick up a win as the most beautiful Android flagship of the year earlier this January, as the purple and gold paint scheme proved to be really cohesive. The standard model also comes in Phantom Violet, Phantom Gray, Phantom White and Phantom Pink colours. As for the Galaxy S20, except for the FE version, you could only choose between a pink, blue, and black finish.
The design of the Galaxy S20 was still a bit more classic with a camera bump / NextPit
Here is a quick word on the plastic back that still grates certain quarters. The standard version of the Samsung Galaxy S21 comes with a back made out of polycarbonate (glorified plastic). However, since the build quality is pretty good, this fact didn’t bother me too much.
Not worth the upgrade: If you are looking for a better camera
It is not new for Samsung to save the best camera technology for its Ultra models. It was the same with the Galaxy S20 Ultra and also with the Galaxy S21 Ultra. As Antoine rattled on in detail in his review, the S21 Ultra is the smartphone with the best zoom optics as of March 2021. That’s because there’s not only a 3x optical telephoto zoom within but also a second telephoto with 10x zoom. Samsung also now uses a 108-megapixel sensor in the S21 Ultra.
Arguing that the Galaxy S21 and Galaxy S21 Plus should be worth the upgrade even if there is no 10x zoom is a fallacy. Because the same 3x telephoto camera does not see action here, but rather, it relies on an approximate 1.1x zoom followed by digital zoom. This was what Samsung achieved with its S20 models.
Compared to its predecessor, the S21+ and S21 Ultra also lack the ToF sensor that was found in the S20+. While its usefulness is certainly debatable, the missing sensor is still a minus point when purchasing the two more expensive S21 variants, and therefore this needs to be mentioned.
As for the Galaxy S21, we can categorically state that no changes are to be expected in terms of camera quality. This does not mean that the smartphone’s camera takes bad pictures: Above all, Samsung’s software and the software-based camera features of the S21 series are a plus point of the current lineup.
