Bose takes the listening experience a step further with its proprietary spatial audio feature. This immersive sound experience evokes the sensation of Dolby Atmos, without the necessity for specific Atmos audio mixes.
Furthermore, the QuietComfort Ultra Headphones also support head tracking, meaning the audio’s spatial location is maintained as you turn your head. For instance, if you tilt your head to the right, the audio signal shifts to the left on the same axis. This dynamic tracking proves immensely useful for radio plays or podcasts, as many find immersive audio for speech to be a more enjoyable and natural experience than traditional stereo listening.

Differences from the Bose Quiet Comfort
The things we criticised in our test of the “normal” Bose QuietComfort Headphones are now being delivered. With the addition of Bluetooth 5.3 and aptX Adaptive Codec, not only are connections now faster and more comfortable, but Bose is also back in the top class in terms of sound. In the current Android environment equipped with Qualcomm Snapdragon sound technology, at least aptX Adaptive HiRes audio formats can now be played back as they were meant to be heard.
Thanks to more powerful DSPs, Bose has not only been able to improve noise cancelling, but they have also surprised us with the excellent Aware mode (transparency mode). Bose now offers its own spatial audio format with “Immersive Audio”, which also supports head tracking. At this point, it is “good form” for headphones to adapt to a user’s circumstances, and the new Bose also does this well.
An additional highlight was the completely redesigned housing, including a touch-sensitive strip on the right side of the earpiece, which allows you to change the volume with the touch of a finger.

The Bose are fitted with a new mic array in an effort to improve on what’s already acknowledged as one of the best active noise-cancellation systems around. They also take care of the Bose Custom Tune technology that tries to optimise audio quality to your specific hearing profile, and have responsibility for Aware Mode.
Their beamforming capability is claimed to be able to differentiate your speaking voice from 360 degrees of external irrelevances, allowing for clear and intelligible call quality and voice-assistant interaction. The environment in which I heard the QuietComfort Headphones Ultra didn’t really set them much of a challenge in this regard, though.
On the inside, the QuietComfort Headphones Ultra use Bluetooth 5.3 for wireless connectivity, with SBC, AAC and aptX Adaptive codec compatibility. Sound is delivered by a couple of 35mm full-range dynamic drivers – details of frequency or response and composition weren’t forthcoming.

The new feature Bose is most pleased with, though, is Immersive Audio. It’s undeniably a variation on the established and currently fashionable spatial audio model inasmuch as it strives to create a bigger and more immersive presentation. It’s embedded in the Bose Music control app, and can be switched off or toggled between Still and Motion. ‘Motion’ means the audio presentation attempts to keep up with the movements of your head.
Battery life is claimed to be 24 hours from a single charge. That’s with Immersive Audio switch off – turn it on and that falls to more like 18 hours. The active noise-cancellation doesn’t affect those figures, for no other reason than it’s always on – there are degrees of cancellation or transparency available in the app, but there’s no off position.
Very good noise cancelling – great Aware mode
Bose’s noise cancelling is always one step ahead of the competition. During our week-long test, the QC Ultra Headphones had to filter out various inner-city sounds. Things like squeaky trams and screeching stone saws from road construction work, but also office chatter, vacuum cleaners and the joyful shouting of children in the playground. The QC Ultra Headphones could comprehensively eliminate or reduce these to a barely perceptible level when you are listening to music at the same time. Compared to the Apple AirPods Max, the Bose ANC is even more effective, and this also applies to the transparency mode.
As with the current QuietComfort – the Bose Music app now offers different modes that can be saved in up to four individual settings. The main focus here is on the Aware mode, which can be adjusted in ten stages. For example, this means that everyday noises can be slightly muffled, which in many cases is useful, right and proper if you’re using the headphones while in traffic.

Few are the companies that are prepared to deviate far from the long-established over-ear headphones design template – and Bose, it’s safe to say, are not among them. Even the mildly interesting exposed adjustment mechanism of the outgoing Noise-Cancelling Headphones 700 has been abandoned for the QuietComfort Headphones Ultra.
Instead, you’re left with a fairly anonymous design that could be by any reputable manufacturer – if it wasn’t for the fairly assertive Bose branding on the outside of each earcup, anyway.
A combination of sturdy, quite tactile plastic and a quantity of judiciously padded pleather constitutes the QuietComfort Headphones Ultra, and while there were no scales handy during my listen it seems safe to say they’re reasonably light.

Consequently, they seem very comfortable – and they didn’t heat my ears up during the course of my listen, which isn’t something you can say about any number of rival designs after half an hour of wearing them. A choice of black or white smoke finishes are available, and in either finish the Bose are either discreetly sophisticated or rather bland, depending on your taste.
The right earcup is where most of the action is when it comes to controlling the QuietComfort Headphones Ultra. As well as a capacitive touch-strip for volume control and shortcut access (which can be user-defined in the Bose Music control app), there are physical controls for power on/off, Bluetooth pairing and a multifunction button used for toggling between listening modes, answering/ending/rejecting calls, or playback control.
On the left-hand side, meanwhile, you’ll find an LED indicator, USB-C charging socket and a 2.5mm jack for hard-wired listening.
Bose QC Ultra Headphones review: What’s new?

The Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones fit into the company’s line-up as a sort-of replacement for the Bose Headphones 700. That might sound peculiar, as those in the know of Bose’s range will be all too aware of the QuietComfort 45 model. To me the Ultra are akin to both the above models melded into an all-new product.
That’s because the Bose QC Ultra Headphones, unlike the 700 model, do have a folding design, meaning they can be tucked away into a smaller footprint case (which is included) for transportation. But unlike the more plasticky and exposed-screw design of the QC 45 model, the Ultra Headphones appear seamless and are just visually more appealing.
There is a key additional new feature: Immersive Audio, which delivers a spatial audio effect so you can ‘move through’ the soundstage as if it’s in front of and around you (this can be set to Static or Motion for various use-cases). Active noise-cancelling (ANC) makes a return, too, albeit in its most advanced and strongest form to date.
BOSE QUIETCOMFORT ULTRA EARBUDS: ACTIVE NOISE CANCELATION
For some time now, Bose has been difficult to compete with in terms of active noise cancellation (ANC), and the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds have effectively upheld their reputation. I think the Sony WF-1000XM5 and AirPods Pro 2 have caught up in some ways, but they still don’t have as many high-end customization choices as Bose.
This level of customization allows me to have a more immersive experience in different environments without compromising my situational awareness. Additionally, the ability to fine-tune the ANC levels according to my preferences makes Bose headphones stand out from the competition.
The Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds offer a natural passthrough sound with “aware” mode, and the optional ActiveSense feature automatically lowers ambient sounds when loud noise is detected, similar to AirPods Pro.
Bose QC Ultra Headphones final thoughts
Despite the fact that Bose made a bad decision when it moved away from its QuietComfort branding in 2019 when it released the poorly named Noise Cancelling Headphones 700, that headphone does have a lot of fans. The QuietComfort Ultra Headphones may not be a huge upgrade over the 700 (it has the same drivers after all), it does offer some meaningful improvements both in terms of its design and performance. If I were a 700 owner, I wouldn’t be in a rush to run out in buy if my headphones were still in good condition, but I’d certainly be tempted to upgrade if and when the Ultras go on sale.
I do think the QC Ultra Headphones are a compelling alternative to the Sony WH-1000XM5s and Apple AirPods Max, and also hold a slight edge over such premium models as the Bowers & Wilkins PX7 S2E ($400), another very good set of headphones. If these models are a little out of your price range, the Sennheiser Momentum 4 Wireless, which have dipped to as low as $250 in a sale, are an option. So, too, are the Beats Studio Pro, which dropped to $180 for fall Prime Day and should see discounts during the holidays.
But if you’re looking for the best noise-canceling headphones, the Bose QC Ultra Headphones are certainly at or near the top of the heap, even with their small downsides. Hopefully, over time they’ll get even better with a few firmware upgrades.
BOSE QUIETCOMFORT ULTRA EARBUDS: CONNECTIVITY AND CONTROLS
The Earbud Seal test is a key feature of the app, which allows users to control music playback, check battery status, and select a Bluetooth source. However, it lacks multi-point connectivity, limiting users to one playback source at a time, which is a disadvantage.
This feature allows for easy customization and quick access to different audio settings based on your current activity or environment. With just a simple long press, you can effortlessly switch between various immersive audio modes, enhancing your listening experience in different scenarios.
I set the right earbud shortcut to activate Siri, my voice assistant, enabling hands-free operation and fast questions in the meantime. Of course, the earbuds also include simple touch controls. A double tap on the panel skips the music, and swiping changes the volume. With a quick tap on either earpiece or simply taking out one of your earphones, you may pause your music. Even tapping to answer and end calls is an option.
Beyond control options, the Bose Music app’s adjustable equalization enables you to customize the earbuds’ sound characteristics. Although there are a few presets, like Bass Boost and Treble Boost, you can practically modify the bass, midrange, and treble to your specific listening preferences. Additionally, you can always reset the EQ using the Bose app if you don’t like the profile you created.
Bose QC Ultra Headphones features
While Bose mentions that both this over-ear Ultra model and its new QC Ultra Earbuds feature « world-class noise cancellation » — and they certainly do — the real feature it’s hyping this go-round is Immersive Audio, its custom version of spatial audio. Bose says Immersive Audio « goes beyond special effects and creates a wider, more spacious soundstage so your content becomes multi-dimensional and layered, regardless of the audio platform or device. »
Like other headphones that feature spatial audio — Apple’s latest AirPods, for instance — the QC Ultra Headphones and QC Ultra Earbuds have two spatial audio modes: one « still » mode without head-tracking engaged and a « motion » mode that uses head-tracking and allows the audio to « move with you, so it’s always in front of you. » Bose says it works with movies and any stereo track, but it’s really designed for music listening.
Using the Immersive Audio feature does widen the soundstage, creating the illusion that your audio is more outside your head. It works better with some tracks than others, but it does open the sound a bit, giving it an airier quality.

Most people will probably choose to mostly leave it on, but the downside is that engaging it does impact battery life significantly. The headphones are rated for up to 24 hours of battery life at moderate volumes levels with noise canceling on. But the number dips to 18 hours with Immersive Audio engaged.
The aware mode is equivalent to Apple’s transparency mode, and it sounds quite natural with almost no audible hiss. There’s also a new ActiveSense feature that kicks in some ANC should the sound get too loud around you (a horn blast, for instance, or a construction worker’s jack hammer). That’s similar to the AirPods Pro 2’s Adaptive Audio feature that isn’t available for the AirPods Max because it requires Apple’s H2 chip, which isn’t present in that model.
As I said, holding down the multifunction button allows you to toggle through three sound modes. I mentioned the default sound modes, but you can add additional sound modes in the app and then designate three of them as favorites so you can easily toggle through them. When creating a sound mode, you simply customize the level of noise canceling you want (anywhere from none to max) and decide whether you want Immersive Audio (still or motion) activated and wind noise reduction on or off. You can also tweak the sound profile with the app’s equalizer.
Thanks to wear sensors in the ear cups, when you take the headphones off your ears, your audio will pause and resume playback when you put them back on. Beyond that, if you set your headphones down somewhere and forget to turn them off, they’ll go into a sleep mode to conserve battery life. You also have them completely turn off after a set period of time. The default setting is 24 hours, but you can change that in the Bose Music app to as little as five minutes. That sleep mode is similar to the AirPods Max’s power saving features.

While the QC Ultra Earbuds still lack multipoint Bluetooth pairing — Bose is still working on adding that feature — which allows you to connect to two devices simultaneously and switch audio between them, both the QC Ultra Headphones and QC Headphones have it. I was able to switch back and forth between the audio on an iPhone 14 Pro and an Android device without any issue. The headphones will also pair with your computer, but computer Bluetooth audio can be more finicky, especially with older Windows PCs and Macs.
The QC Ultra Headphones and QC Ultra Earbuds are equipped with Bluetooth 5.3, while the new QC Headphones use Bluetooth 5.1 and lack Bose’s Immersive Audio feature.
Finally, both the Ultra models are LE Audio ready, which means they can be upgraded via a firmware update to include LE Audio features such as Auracast that would allow you to tune into audio broadcasts over Bluetooth, say from a TV at your gym. The LE Audio standard also includes support for the LC3 audio codec.
Bose QuietComfort Ultra: Conclusion
The Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones represent a remarkable fusion of audio excellence, cutting-edge noise-canceling technology, and user-friendly features.
One of the standout features of the QC Ultra is its exceptional noise-canceling capability. Throughout a rigorous week-long test, these headphones proved their mettle by effectively eliminating or reducing a wide range of intrusive noises, from screeching trams to office chatter.
The innovative aware mode adds an element of versatility, allowing you to stay connected to your surroundings when needed or switch to highly efficient noise canceling.
