Сотовый телефон nokia 3350

Новинки nokia: три смартфона и осовремененный nokia 3310

Variants[]

3315, 3390 and 3395

Nokia 3390
An enhanced version of the 3310 is the Nokia 3315, which has some additional features:

  • A picture editor to edit pictures for use in SMS Picture messaging and screensavers on the phone
  • Timed profiles
  • Could use received ringtones as SMS tones
  • Fixed some of the bugs found in the 3310
  • Automatic keypad locking after specified time
  • Accidental emergency calls are not possible because keyguard is always “on”
  • Peanut-like interconnected silicon key mat

3315s sold in Singapore and Malaysia had a blue backlight for the LCD screen and keypad, as opposed to green in other markets.

The 3315 was also released in Australia and Europe, but these versions had green backlight. Most versions of the 3310 could be upgraded to include the additional features of the 3315 by using a data cable.

There are two North American variants of the 3310; one is the Nokia 3390, which operates on GSM 1900. The Nokia 3395 is an updated version of the 3390, which includes the additional features of the Asian 3315 model, and it has poor reception if connected to a GSM 850 area. Both were released in 2002.[citation needed]

WAP-enhanced models (3330 and 3350)

Nokia 3330, a variant of Nokia 3310
The Nokia 3330 added a CSD-based WAP capability, animated Screensavers, a pinball game named Bumper, and phonebook (stored in the phone memory as opposed to the SIM card in earlier models) with a 100-entry capacity to the model. It also has the capability of downloading Java MIDP apps via WAP (such as Snake II mazes, Bumper tables, and Space Impact chapters). It was released in 2001.

An Asia-Pacific version of the 3330, also rarely sold in Europe, known as the Nokia 3350, was in essence an improved 3330 with WAP, rhythmic backlight alert, animated Screensavers, two-way Navi-Key, dedicated call and hang buttons, Chinese lunar calendar, and a 96-by-65-pixel screen. Some 3350s have back covers that feature a photo-insert window, allowing users to put personal pictures from photographs, magazine cut-outs, etc. It was also released in 2001.

AMPS/D-AMPS-based versions (3320 and 3360)

The Nokia 3360 and 3320 are related models designed for the U.S. and Canadian markets, respectively. They are externally similar to the 3310 and 3390, but they use Digital AMPS («TDMA»)/AMPS technology rather than GSM.

Like the Asian 3350, they include two dedicated call and hang buttons and two soft keys. They also feature an infrared port. Unlike the 3390, the 3360 and 3320 do not support voice dialing. At 136 grams each, they are also slightly heavier than the 3390, which weighs 119 grams. The 3320 was released in 2001 and the 3360 was released in 2002.

Features

While Nokia chargers and barrel plugs were once commonplace, modern USB charging has made them long obsolete and I don’t have any to hand. To make for this demonstration, a little creativity with wire and a breadboard was necessary …

… to charge the battery from a Keithley 2450 SourceMeter unit. Thankfully, the battery still seems to take a healthy charge, despite significantly increased internal resistance. Given that the radio itself won’t be transmitting, I suppose the battery may still work well enough for a short demonstration.

Now that the 2G network has been turned off, there is no service. That’s expected. At the end of the demonstration, the battery was only half full. For a phone of this age, the animated icons on the menu are very nice indeed, along with the “number” shortcut navigation feature.

An interesting feature is the ability to edit and draw pictures – these can be drawn using an editor which works a bit like a LOGO turtle – pen up, pen down and directions are input by the keypad.

The phone seems to have made just shy of 44 hours of calling before being retired. This is not a bad amount, given the cost of phone calls in that era. Another key differentiator is the games that were available on the phone.

The classic Snake II … beloved by many, although one I find a little tricky due to the LCD and slight lag. Nevertheless, I’m sure many hours were passed by people playing this game.

Space Impact was also on the phone – this one is rather interesting with its inverted graphics.

Dance 2 Music is the third game on the unit – not sure what this one is about, but the panda looks pretty cute.

Bumper is a pinball simulator.

Link5 appears to be a game of Go.

Magic Draw seems to be a lottery random number generator.

Unfortunately, now that 2G networks are no longer available, there’s not much more that can be demonstrated.

Conclusion

The 3350 is an upgraded cousin of the legendary 3310. Having never owned one when they were in vogue, I was envious of those with them for their compact size and their customisability. In the end, having one to play with so many years later, it seems the elegance and modularity of the design is a refreshing thing – I’ve not met a phone that seemed so easy to service and repair. It’s a shame electronics aren’t built this way anymore. Nevertheless, even though 2G networks are no longer in service, the battery held up long enough for me to have a play with it and make a raw recording of the ring-tone audio directly from the speaker terminals, complete with all the harsh square-wave harmonics. The noises, while somewhat grating, are iconic and nostalgic in their own way.

I’ve got a few more Nokia-branded donations from friends – when the time permits, they may well receive the same blog treatment. Hope you enjoyed this one, as things seem to only go downhill from here for Nokia …

Teardown

Tearing the unit down was a delight – it really shows Nokia’s design prowess and attention to serviceability. I’ve not had a phone this easy to take apart and reassemble in my memory. You can get into the phone just with a single size of Torx screwdriver.

The front plate contains the earpiece speaker, the monochrome LCD and the top contacts of the button pad. If anything goes wrong, one could simply replace the whole front piece for speed. Even better is the fact there is no cables linking the two – merely sprung gold contacts which makes for speedy disassembly/reassembly.

The mainboard flips out of the case as well. Here, we can see the aerial in the top, terminating to two pogo pins, the battery contacts terminating to another set, the vibration motor, SIM card, ringer speaker, and various terminals all using sprung gold contacts to make connection to the mainboard. No plugs, no wires … this is truly something to behold.

The mainboard itself has three screened can sections – the cans are perforated, perhaps for better heat dissipation, and are removable rather than single-piece cans.

This allows us to get a closer look at the internals – it may mean that some SMD rework is possible for the brave as well. Why can’t phones of today be this easy to get into!?

The top section appears to be for the RF parts – the main can appears to be a Hitachi PF08109B power-amplifier module. The other can is not identified, but perhaps is a radio of sorts. The can in the bottom right may be a synthesized clock reference at a guess.

The middle section seems to house an ASIC marked HAGAR, known to be a signalling processor. There seem to be more clock cans and RF cans – one under an extra level of shielding.

The bottom section seems to contain the brains – CCONT power management IC, COBBA audio processor, MAD2WDI TI GSM Baseband Processor and an unidentified chip marked 4370621 B9NP236 MAL which may be power-related. Many of these chips seem to be common to other models of Nokia phones as well. The SMD LEDs appear to be mounted upside down, above holes that allow it to shine through to the keypad on the other side. The phone firmware is probably held in the unidentified Intel F32OB3TD A2330412 K310124H chip which may be a NOR Flash (at a guess), with Samsung K6F2016U4E 256kiB DRAM for the system.

The bottom houses many of the gold contact pads, with an NMP70433 which may be some form of amplifier or opamp (again, just a guess).

I do like the design – such a design seems so elegantly simple and perhaps even serviceable for those who dare to do some SMD rework. Having the parts so modular and easily replaceable makes this a very serviceable design. Its popularity also means wide availability of parts – such monochrome screens were long available as modules for makers to use with their Arduinos because of their plentiful supply and low price.

Ringtones

I guess my main key mission was to extract the ringtones in some way – this is perhaps the most nostalgic and iconic part of the Nokia in my opinion. As I don’t have any 2.5mm adapters handy and I didn’t know if ringtones were played out of that connection, I decided to just modify the board and attach wires directly to the ringing speaker terminals.

The following recordings were made using the Rohde & Schwarz RTM3004 Oscilloscope and converted to audio by resampling to 48kHz with a 20Hz to 24kHz bandpass filter to avoid aliasing and DC-offset. The recordings are provided in uncompressed WAV files for the best harmonic quality, although it seems the phone has a progressive ring volume which I didn’t turn off, explaining slight changes in tonal quality. Enjoy the nostalgia – perhaps use it on your current phone if you care for it.

сотовый телефон Nokia 3350

Nokia 3

Design[]

The 3310 was developed at the Copenhagen Nokia site in Denmark and unveiled at the “Don’t be bored. Be totally board.” lifestyle event in Oberhausen, Germany, as well as “Nokia Unplugged” concerts in the Asia-Pacific region. It is a compact and sturdy phone featuring an 84 × 48 pixel pure monochrome display. It has a lighter removable 115 g (4.1 oz) battery variant which has fewer features; for example, the 133 g (4.6 oz) battery version has the start-up image of two hands touching while the 115 g (4.05 oz) version does not. Furthermore, it is a slightly rounded rectangular unit that is typically held in the palm of a hand, with the buttons operated with the thumb. The blue button is the main button for selecting options, with “C” button as a “backspace”, “back” or “undo” button. Up and down buttons are used for navigation purposes. The on/off/profile button is a stiff black button located on the top of the phone. Like its predecessor Nokia 3210, the 3310 was marketed as a customizable consumer-oriented handset targeting the youth. It is about a centimeter shorter than the 3210.
The 3310 is known for being reasonably durable due to its casing and construction, a feature which is often humorously exaggerated in online communities. Numerous videos also exist of the phone being put through increasingly-severe damage tests to test the phone’s strength, including being dropped from a great height (sometimes while being protected with makeshift cases made from various objects), being crushed by heavy objects or being struck by vehicles or hammers, many times of which the phone proved its record. The 3310’s reputation for durability led HMD Global to develop the Nokia 800 Tough with MIL-STD-810G standard compliance in mind.

The Legend of Durability

The phone arrived in what appears to be an aftermarket belt-clip pouch with leather back and clear plastic front. Such pouches were common to protect the phone from harm, even though the 3350 was no doubt durable, as phones were not particularly cheap unlike nowadays.

There were minor changes between models – this one has a slightly improved button layout, a two-tone case colour scheme and a picture window in the back which could be customised, but never was.

The body has some slight curves to it, with the front and back plastic shells easily removed and replaced (including the silicone button sheet). This was a very smart design choice that made it both customisable but also cheap to maintain – reminds me a bit of what they said about VW Beetles, as you could buy aftermarket phone trim pieces in many shops.

The power button was on the top and the charge port below, with docking charge contacts and 2.5mm socket for a hands-free headset.

Pressing the button allows for the back to be detached – the grey insert can be removed to customise the picture in the rear. Unlike most phones of the era, Nokia had managed to move to Lithium-Ion by this time, using the BLC-2 battery. A mini-SIM slot is visible below – this phone originally had a Vodafone SIM card with a SIM PIN lock on it, so I had to change it to a more modern Vodafone SIM for later demonstrations. The unit is network locked and will display Invalid SIM if an “other network” card is inserted. Judging from the plastic molding marks, it is from 2002, making it 20-years old.

The handset is type NHM-9NX, Model 3350 and was Made in Korea.

The front can easily be detached from the body as well, and replaced. There is foam taping around the speaker and display window which seems to have been effective at ensuring good audio and minimising dust ingress.

The BLC-2 battery appears to be the original battery and seems to be genuine – the NOKIA lettering inside the I is something that was not always replicated. Because of its age, it has the slightest of bulges, but otherwise appears as it originally did. Some phones of the series also used BMC-3 batteries with Ni-MH chemistry – one of the terminals was used to detect the battery type.

Features[]

The Nokia 3310’s main new feature introduced over its predecessors was a Chat function. This is an instant messaging-like feature that works on standard SMS. The 3310 was popular for SMS text messaging because of Chat and also because it allowed long messages three times the size of a standard SMS text message, at 459 characters. It also featured threaded SMS writing and voice dialing for the quick dialing of selected numbers.

The 3310 is known for having many features that were rare for the time. These include many utilities, such as a calculator, Nokia network monitor, stop watch and a reminder function. It has four games: Pairs II, Space Impact, Bantumi, and the hugely popular Snake II. The Snake series of games had been popular on Nokia handsets since the late 1990s. CNET remembered Space Impact, a shoot ’em up in which the player fires projectiles at oncoming aliens, as a mediocre game overall but impressive for fitting a mobile device with its complexity and length. It was later recreated for other mobile devices.

The Nokia 3310 runs on Nokia’s proprietary Series 20 software.

The Nokia 3310 uses a MiniSIM (more commonly known as a standard SIM).
