Night time
The S21 Ultra performs better at night than its predecessor, but it’s not without flaws. Generally speaking, it’ll capture more light in its low-light photos — but at a cost.
This shot illuminates the issue. It was taken with Night Mode off. The S21 Ultra took the better photo, capturing more light and more detail, which you can see in the clouds and on the fencing behind the umbrella. But along with that comes some ugly noise, which is particularly bad in the top left of the photo.
Now let’s turn Night Mode on. Here I can say the S21 Ultra is an unqualified winner. There are noise issues, particularly on the wall on the right of the photo, but it’s worth it for the extra illumination and sharpness.
But there are times where Night Mode can overdo it. Below is a scene with minimal natural light.
With Night Mode turned on, the S21 Ultra technically does a better job at flooding the scene with light. But it goes too far, resulting in a harsh shot. The S20 Ultra’s Night Mode added less light, but produced a more natural-looking photo.
Still, generally speaking the S21 Ultra was a minor improvement over its predecessor. The comparison below is illustrative of what you’ll mostly find: The S21 Ultra is a bit sharper, brighter and better at night.

Galaxy S21 Ultra vs Galaxy S20 Ultra: Display

The Galaxy S21 Ultra’s 6.8-inch display is a bit smaller than the 6.9-inch panel on the S20 Ultra, but the new panel is better in a few key ways. For starters, you can now get a 120Hz refresh rate at the highest QHD resolution; with the S20 Ultra you had to choose between 120Hz and full HD.
The S21 Ultra’s panel is also dynamic, which means it can scale from 120Hz all the way down to 10Hz, which saves battery life. With the Galaxy S20 Ultra, 120Hz mode is simply on or off.
In addition, the S21 Ultra’s display is rated for a peak brightness of 1,500 nits, compared to 1,200 nits for the S20 Ultra. Other improvements include a 50% better contrast ratio and an Eye Comfort Shield feature for reducing eye fatigue.
Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra vs. Galaxy S20 Ultra: Minor improvements across the board
The and are similar in design, though a few differences are immediately noticeable. The S21 Ultra swaps last year’s glossy backing for a new matte frosted glass, which does a much better job at concealing fingerprints and comes in two striking color options, Phantom Black and Phantom Silver. It features an all-new camera housing that Samsung is calling the Contour Cut Camera system, which blends into the metal frame for a clean, seamless design that’s far more refined than that of the S20 Ultra.
There are a few trade-offs with the newer model, however. The S21 Ultra no longer supports microSD expandability, meaning you’re stuck with the storage configuration you choose at the time of purchase. Samsung has also done away with the wired headphones and charging brick that used to be included in the box — if you want these accessories bundled in with your device, the S20 Ultra is still a more compelling option.
Still, those missing accessories are offset by a $200 price reduction with the S21 Ultra. Of course, the can be found at lower prices now that it’s nearly a year old, but it’s a step in the right direction to see Samsung lower its prices without impacting build quality or specs.
Both phones also feature incredible curved displays, backed by Samsung’s Dynamic AMOLED 2X technology. Each features a 120Hz variable refresh rate, along with a 1440p resolution, but only the S21 Ultra can take advantage of both settings simultaneously — with the S20 Ultra, you’ll need to drop down to 60Hz to enjoy the display at the highest resolution available.

Another improvement made to the S21 Ultra rests under the display. Samsung has finally updated the optical fingerprint sensor for the first time since its introduction with the Galaxy S10, now 1.77x larger than before. As a result, it’s much quicker and more accurate than on the S20 Ultra, making it easier to get into your phone without a second thought.

Of course, the biggest improvements come with the cameras. The Galaxy S20 Ultra bet big on its camera system, boasting up to 100x zoom through a combination of optical and digital zooming, but fell a bit short due to with the main 108MP sensor. The S21 Ultra borrows from the Note 20 Ultra that launched last fall, adding a laser autofocusing system that drastically improves performance.
In addition, the Galaxy S21 Ultra is Samsung’s first device with dual telephoto cameras, one at a native 3x and the other at a native 10x, They improve both short- and long-range zoom photos, and offer better stability at 30x and better overall clarity. Samsung has also packed a number of new shooting modes for both photo and video, along with the ability to shoot 8K video in 12-bit RAW for dramatically better color data.
One major advantage of the S21 Ultra is its support for the S Pen, which has traditionally remained exclusive to the Galaxy Note and Galaxy Tab series. The Galaxy S20 Ultra has no such support, making it the clear victor for anyone curious to try pressure-sensitive writing and drawing. Still, many of the S21 Ultra’s other benefits are minor at best.
Overall, if you already own an S20 Ultra, there’s no need to upgrade just yet. But if you don’t have either phone yet, the Galaxy S21 Ultra is well worth considering.

The Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra and S20 Ultra feature equally impressive camera specs, though their setups are different. They both boast 108MP wide lenses, as well as 12MP ultra lenses. The difference comes with the telephoto lenses: The S20 Ultra has a single 48MP telephoto camera, while the S21 Ultra has two separate 10MP telephoto lenses. The first of these lenses is capable of 3x optical zoom, while the second — the periscope telephoto lens — is capable of an impressive 10x optical zoom.
With the S20 Ultra, high-zoom shots became something of a pixellated gimmick after you pass a certain threshold. Fortunately, the S21 Ultra’s inclusion of the 10x periscope telephoto provides noticeably more clarity and definition, with shots remaining well-balanced and detailed even at high zoom levels.
The S21 Ultra also improves on its predecessor more generally. There’s none of the overexposure that blighted the S20 Ultra when it first launched, with the phone offering a very balanced palette and some impressive HDR effects. Unlike with the S20 Ultra, you can almost always be confident that any shot you take will look good, which is why this round goes to the S21 Ultra.
