The Galaxy S21 is a sidegrade in all the right places

Looking at the and S20 side by side, the phones don’t seem all that different, and in most ways, you’d be absolutely right. The screen size is the same, they’re both the same height and thickness, and both have the same 4,000mAh battery. We get a newer processor and slightly newer cameras, and support for standalone and millimeter-wave 5G, but otherwise, the S21 is a lateral move rather than a barn-burner of an upgrade.
In fact, when you really look at the specs, Samsung even downgraded the S21 in a couple of places to keep that starting price as low as it did.

RAM on the S21 is 8GB rather than the 12GB it was on the S20 5G — the Galaxy S20 4G sold in some international markets had 8GB, too — and while there’s an option for 256GB of internal storage, there’s no longer a microSD card slot. I am fine with the because it slows down the flagship experience and is prone to more problems, but some data hoarders will bemoan the inability to stick a terabyte of storage inside a 128GB phone.

The other downgrade that users might notice is the screen. The S20 had a 1440p screen while the S21 «only» has 1080p, but there’s a good reason for this change. The S20 supported 120Hz refresh rates only at 1080p; if you went up to 1440p, you were stuck with 60Hz. Since most people prioritized a faster refresh rate and that butter-smooth scrolling in Twitter and Instagram, 1440p was wasted on most Galaxy S20 users, and Samsung swapped down to 120Hz to save itself and consumers some money. Samsung also swapped to a flat panel, which is easier to grip and easier to buy for.
There’s also something to be said for Samsung removing MST support for the North American models of the Galaxy S21, but like with microSD support, its death unless you live somewhere with older, outdated card readers.
Samsung Galaxy S21 vs. Galaxy S20: Design and models
The Galaxy S20 family debuted with three models in three different sizes (at least until the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE came along), and Samsung has continued with the big/bigger/biggest approach for the S21 lineup.

Samsung’s new phones look a lot like the old ones with a full-screen display interrupted only by a punch-hole cutout in the center of the screen. The S21 and S21 Plus feature straighter edges, while the S21 Ultra’s display has more of a curve to it.
The biggest visual difference between the S20 and S21 phones in the camera array. This year, it’s designed to blend into the metal frame around the phone. Samsung calls this the Contour Cut camera housing, and we think it looks pretty sharp.

Ориентировочно в телефонах с оперативной памятью 2 Гб и частотой процессора 2 ГГц должно быть не меньше 3000 мАч.
Это даст устройству возможность отработать примерно два дня при небольшом количестве игр, большом количестве пользования интернетом и работе с документами.
Если беспрерывно играть в какие-то тяжелые игры, к примеру, GTA или Nova 3, то устройства с 3000 мАч хватит примерно на 6 часов.
Но даже на самых мощных телефонах редко когда бывает больше 4000 мАч. Да, есть какие-то «необычные» модели с 5000 мАч, но работают они недолго.
Такое количество миллиАмпер – просто рекламный трюк. Это делается с целью привлечь клиентов.
Это очень четко видно на примере телефона Bravis Power. У телефона 4500 мАч, но мощности практически нет и, судя по отзывам в интернете, работает телефон порядка 4-5 месяцев.
Стоит он 115 долларов. Сочетание такой цены и такой емкости аккумулятора вызывает много вопросов. И не зря.

Из вышесказанного можно заключить следующее: если телефон стоит меньше 150 долларов, а емкость аккумулятора на нем более 3000 мАч.
Это очень странно и такое устройство вряд ли отработает больше года.
С другой стороны, часто производители стараются экономить на этом параметре и стараются брать процессором, оперативной памятью и другими параметрами.
Да, на бюджетных телефонах допускается емкость примерно 2000 мАч. Ведь там все остальные элементы не потребляют столько энергии.
Поэтому можно вывести некий золотой параметр.
Совет №5: Емкость аккумулятора должна быть от 2000 мАч до 4000 мАч.

There’s not a huge difference in the appearance of these two phones: Samsung’s design language for its Samsung Galaxy devices is well established now, and with the exception of the S21’s new camera housing there’s very little visual difference between the 2020 and 2021 phones. There are still some differences, however, and the most obvious one is that where the Galaxy S20 has a glass back the S21 has a plastic one. The more expensive S21+ and S21 Ultra get aluminium.
The standard Galaxy S21 comes in four colours: pink, violet, white and grey.
Both the Galaxy S20 and the Galaxy S21 offer an almost bezel-free edge to edge Infinity display and have a slightly protruding rear camera block in the upper left hand corner of the case. The S21’s camera block is slightly taller and Samsung has made some interesting and we think attractive colour contrasts between it and the rest of the case.
The front camera is embedded in the display thanks to a centred hole-punch design: when the display shows a light colour you can see the dot in the top centre where the selfie camera lives, but it takes a fraction of the screen space that the notch in an iPhone does.
Although you can’t see it, the fingerprint sensor is 1.7x larger than before to deliver easier and faster unlocking and authentication.

Samsung Galaxy S21 vs. Galaxy S20: Battery life and charging
On the surface, there’s not much difference between the battery sizes in the Galaxy S21 models and last year’s S20 lineup. The Galaxy S21 has a 4,000 mAh battery while the S21 Ultra relies on a 5,000 mAh power pack. These are the same battery capacities found in the comparable S20 models. Only the Galaxy S21 Plus received a bigger battery — a 4,800 mAh pack replaces the 4,500 mAh module found in the S20 Plus.

Ultimately, though, the lack of any change to battery size may not matter when it comes to battery life, as least for the Galaxy S21. With that model featuring a less demanding resolution, power consumption falls off for the Galaxy S21 — as long as you disable the adaptive refresh rate. (The Galaxy S21 turned in a pitiful result in its 120Hz mode in our battery life test.)
Throw in a more efficient chipset — the Snapdragon 888 is expected to feature better power efficiency than the Snapdragon 865 — and the S21 models last longer on a charge than the last round of Galaxy flagships.
Samsung did not include a charger in the box with its new phones, mirroring a move Apple made with the iPhone 12. You may recall Samsung put out an ad mocking Apple’s decision, so it may be worth asking who’s laughing now.
Cameras

The Samsung Galaxy S21 and the Galaxy S20 feature the same basic camera setup. Equipped with 12MP wide and 12MP ultrawide lenses, they also both offer a 64MP telephoto lens. This beefy telephoto camera provides a 3x optical zoom, giving you more detail with close-up shots. However, the support for a 30x digital zoom is more of a nice gimmick than anything else, given the relative lack of clarity.
Our review found that the S20 is a very good all-around camera phone, taking very nice pictures in most settings. The same is true for the S21 since its hardware is basically identical to the S20’s. Its three rear lenses (and also its selfie camera) offer the same number of megapixels as the S20’s, while they also feature the same aperture sizes and the same components (such as dual-pixel autofocus).
Samsung’s much-trumpeted software enhancements don’t seem to make a noticeable difference either. The S21 still struggles in low-light conditions, while its indoor shots of people’s faces also leave something to be desired, sometimes leaving faces under-defined. Still, it’s a good camera all-round, while its addition of Vlogger View and Director View — which let you use front and rear cameras simultaneously and switch easily between the three rear lenses — makes things a bit more interesting. That said, these new features are very modest, so we’re calling this round a tie.

The Samsung Galaxy S21 and Galaxy S20 are almost identical in terms of measurements, with the Galaxy S21 adding a couple of millimetres to its height and a couple of grams to its weight over the 2020 model.
Rumours suggested Samsung moved to a plastic rear for the Galaxy S21 however, like it did with the Galaxy S20 FE, rather than the glass rear of the S20. This is currently unconfirmed but we will update this feature when we have official word on the materials used for the S21.
The Galaxy S20 comes with a curved display on the front and a centralised punch hole camera at the top, and the Galaxy S21 does the same, though it has a flat display instead of curved.
The main changes are on the back of the device however. The triple rear camera housing reaches round to the frame on the Galaxy S21, while on the S20, the housing is more of an island. Both sport the rear camera in the top left corner though.
Both the Galaxy S20 and Galaxy S21 have IP68 water and dust resistance and they both come with an Ultrasonic fingerprint sensor under the display.

The Galaxy S20 is powered by a Snapdragon 865 in the US or a Samsung Exynos 990 in the rest of the world. Whichever processor you get, its’ backed with 8GB of RAM (12GB in the 5G model) and 128GB of internal storage. It has a microSDXC card slot but the S21 does not.
The Galaxy S21 gets the more powerful Snapdragon 888 in the US, China and Korea and Samsung’s new Exynos 2100 everywhere else. Once again there’s 8GB of RAM and a choice of 128GB or 256GB of internal storage. According to Samsung this new Exynos and its accompanying GPU deliver over 30% better performance and 40% better graphics performance. The Snapdragon delivers 20% faster CPU performance than before and 25% faster graphics.
The Samsung Galaxy S21 runs Android 11 with One UI 3.1; the S20 had Android 10 and One UI 2.5.
