I’ll go into a little more detail around what each phone has to offer further below, but first, let’s look at what you’re getting from a hardware point of view. The Galaxy S22 has a smaller screen, but a more elegant design

The most obvious difference between the two devices can be seen by just looking at them: The Galaxy S22 has a 6.1-inch screen, while the Galaxy S21 FE has a 6.4-inch display. Which size is better depends on your preference. The Galaxy S22 can seem a little cramped, especially when typing, while the Galaxy S21 FE feels like a better balance of portability and screen space. Compared with the Galaxy S22 Plus and Ultra, the Galaxy S22 feels right for people who prefer smaller phones like the iPhone 13 Mini or Samsung Galaxy S10E. However, both of those phones are considerably smaller than the S22.
The Galaxy S22 and S21 FE have very similar display quality. The Galaxy S22 technically has more pixels per inch, but the difference isn’t noticeable. Both phones can crank their screens’ refresh rates up to 120Hz for smoother scrolling and they both support HDR10 Plus, so you’re not missing out on anything major by opting for the cheaper FE. The Galaxy S22 family has a new feature called Vision Booster, which adjusts the screen to the lighting in your surroundings, but I didn’t notice much of a difference between the two.
Where you will notice a difference, however, is in the phones’ design. The Galaxy S22 is made from metal and glass, giving it a more elegant and expensive feel than the cheaper Galaxy S21 FE. The S22’s metallic edges even remind me a bit of the iPhone 13 Pro. The Galaxy S21 FE’s design looks dull by comparison, but that probably doesn’t matter much if you plan to cover your device with a case. The Galaxy S22 is also slightly lighter than the Galaxy S21 FE at 167 grams compared with the S21 FE’s 177 grams.

Here’s an area where you’re going to notice a difference between the Galaxy S1 FE and the Galaxy S22. Samsung tends to strip back the camera specs on its FE models, and that continued with the Galaxy S21 FE. The new phone features a 12MP main camera along with 12MP ultrawide and 8MP telephoto lenses. That telephoto lens is decidedly less powerful than the 64MP counterpart on the Galaxy S21, though the S21 FE does support a software-powered 30x Space Zoom capability.

That said, the Galaxy S21 FE holds up pretty well when you compare its camera output to other top phones. Our Samsung Galaxy S21 FE vs. Google Pixel 6 face-off gave the camera edge to Google’s phone, for example, but the gap wasn’t that big. And the S21 FE produced better zooms and impressive low-light photos thanks to an improved night mode.

Still, you’d expect a gap between what the Galaxy S21 FE can do and what Samsung has planned for the Galaxy S22. Supposedly, that upcoming flagship is getting a much more powerful main camera with a 50MP sensor. The telephoto lens is also supposed to get an upgrade from a hybrid zoom to an optical one. And the S22 may be able to support 8K video capture at 60 frames per second. (The S21 FE tops out at 4K video capture.)

If you’re looking for a flagship phone that doesn’t breach the $1000 mark, the S22 is a great option. Compared to the S20, you get a better design, an upgraded camera setup, longer software support, and a slightly brighter display.
With the launch of the Galaxy S23, we now have to consider if it’s worth skipping the Galaxy S22 and jumping to Samsung’s latest and greatest. It’s great that Samsung is keeping the S22 around with a lowered price point of $699, but unless you can find the S22 at a great deal, it makes sense to spend the extra $100 on the newer version.

The Samsung Galaxy S22 is still a great phone in 2023. It’s an even better deal now that Samsung has lowered its price. It may not be as great as the Galaxy S23, but if you find it for a reduced price then it’s well worth considering. Add in the years of software updates and you won’t be left wanting more.

If you’re holding an S20 in your hand and don’t see anything wrong with it, it might make sense to stick with it. On the other hand, your S20’s battery is probably starting to give up after more than three years of use, and the much-improved cameras on the S22 may be catching your eye. If you’re unhappy with the S20’s longevity, the S22 won’t be much of a relief. It features a 3,700mAh battery that’s a tad smaller than the 4,000mAh unit on the S20. This doesn’t put the S20 at an advantage, though, since it also has more pixels to power when used in QHD mode, and the S22 is technically powered by a more efficient chipset.
