The Apple Watch Series 8 is a fine smartwatch, but it doesn’t bring much that the Series 7 doesn’t. We wouldn’t recommend updating from a Series 7 or Series 6 unless you really need to have the latest and greatest watch every year.
The Ultra, however, is a different story. While its 49mm display will be too big for many users, its tremendous feature set, excellent battery life, and titanium finish make it very compelling, especially at a $799 price tag. Even if you won’t use many of the features, the 36-hour battery life and rugged case make it a great purchase for anyone who loves large watches—and maybe even a few people who don’t.

Между Apple Watch Series 7 и Apple Watch Series 8 разница не такая уж и большая. Есть желание доплатить несколько тысяч рублей за датчик температуры, чуть более новую версию процессора и Bluetooth? Берём Apple Watch 8. Такого желания нет? Забираем Apple Watch 7.

Все отличия кратко
более дорогих часов Ultra сильно отличаются от привычных размеров Apple Watch. Гаджет существенно больше и немного тяжелее обычной линейки. Если вы привыкли к младшей 41-мм модели, Ultra могут оказаться слишком массивными. Уменьшенной модели не предусмотрено.

Processor, storage, more
Last year, Apple used the same 64-bit dual-core processor in the Series 7 that launched in the Series 6, but with the updated S7 name.
This year, the Apple Watch Ultra and Series 8 come with the S8 SiP 64-bit dual-core processor. It appears to be roughly the same as the S7 and S6 performance-wise as Apple didn’t share any claims of performance advancements during its keynote or on its website.
While you shouldn’t expect a noticeable speed bump from Series 6 or 7 to 8 or Ultra, if you’re coming from an earlier Apple Watch model you should notice a faster, more responsive watch.
Apple does say that the S8 is 20% faster than the S5 chip.

Apple Watch Ultra comes with the biggest case and display yet from Apple with 49mm for the former and a 410 x 502 resolution display that offers 1164 sq mm. Apple says it’s 27% bigger than the display on Series 4-6/SE.

Но, признаться, я так и не понял за два года использования часов, зачем нужен комплектный блок питания. Правда, если у вас макбук с разъёмом Type-C, то за специальную зарядку с этим разъёмом нужно доплатить ещё 2990 рублей.
Кстати, с часами шестого поколения появилась относительно быстрая зарядка: до 80 % за 1 час и до 100 % за полтора! У S3 и SE эти показатели равны 1,5 и 2,5 часам соответственно.

Design and Display Quality
Hey, you two look kind of similar
For the most part, the Watch Series 8 and Watch Series 6 look very, very similar. The same soft rectangle shape that mirrors the design language of the iPhones up until the iPhone 12 became flat and stark. It’s a nice unisex look that doesn’t get caught on clothes, is easy to accessorize for, and is not too aggressive on the eyes.
The Apple Watch Series 8 has a 20% bigger screen than the Series 6 — the device itself is not bigger, it’s that the bezels are thinner. It makes it look more prestigious, high-tech, and futuristic, as the screen almost curves into the sides. It also makes it a bit easier to interact with the Watch. On the other hand, it makes it even harder to slap a screen protector or case on it.
That said, the Watch Series 6 still looks perfectly fine and is fun to interact with — we have been using it for the past 2 years and still actively do so alongside the Watch 8. When the two timepieces are right next to each other, the Watch 6 does look a bit old-ish with its thicker bezel, but we don’t give that another thought when out and about with it on our wrist.
Other than the bezel difference, we have basically the same screens — dense Retina displays made with LTPO OLED panels that can drop their refresh rate down to 1 Hz. Ergo, both Watches support Always-On screens, so the watchface is visible (in dark form) even if you don’t raise your wrist. And both screens can reach up to 1,000 nits for viewability under direct sunlight.
