As per usual, this won’t be a discussion of iOS versus Android; each one has its advantages and disadvantages. Samsung does have a few notable software features that could sway some power users. The first is the S Pen support; if you want a stylus with your phone, then this conversation is all over. Another potential game-changer for some is Samsung’s DeX mode which essentially turns your phone into a laptop replacement. The latter is one of the few features that actually uses all of the pent-up power available in this superphone.

Perhaps the biggest differentiator in software between these phones remains support. While Apple doesn’t have a specific support commitment, it consistently offers at least 5 to 6 years of support for its flagship phones.The Galaxy S22 Ultra, by comparison, will get four major Android updates and four years of security updates. While Google’s Pixel receives an extra year of security updates, Samsung now leads the Android market in major OS updates. 

I’m calling this category a draw. While Apple still has the support lead, at four years, Samsung has mitigated that advantage and some of Samsung’s more advanced software features like DeX eclipse anything the iPhone can offer.

The Galaxy S22 Ultra comes with 8GB RAM on the base variant and can go all the way up to 12GB whereas the iPhone 13 Pro Max is capped at 6GB RAM. However, despite this on-paper difference, the multitasking capability on the two devices is similar.

If you’re comparing the iPhone 13 Pro Max with the base model of the S22 Ultra with 8GB RAM, then the former pulls slightly ahead given the software’s better RAM management. In other words, the iPhone can do more with less. However, if you compare it with the 12GB RAM variant of the S22 Ultra, then the latter wins by a small but noticeable margin.

We consider this too close call, especially since so much will depend on your operating system preference when choosing a phone at this high level of quality. Both the Galaxy S22 Ultra and the iPhone 13 Pro Max deliver a respectable battery life with the former rocking a 5000mAh cell while the latter has a smaller 4352mAh cell. However, battery tests show that the latter still easily outperforms the former given its incredibly efficient chip that consumes less power in day-to-day tasks.

If you’re a casual user, you could expect the iPhone 13 Pro Max to last you two full days of use.

That said, the Galaxy S22 Ultra charges faster thanks to its 45W fast wired charging support while the iPhone 13 Pro Max is capped at an unofficial 27W charging support. Also, the latter only supports reverse wireless charging for Apple’s MagSafe Battery Pack but can’t charge AirPods or Apple Watch. The S22 Ultra can charge Galaxy Buds and the Galaxy Watch.

In terms of design, the two devices are different from each other. Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra boasts a glass sandwich design with a punch-hole cutout on the front. The camera module no longer sits on an island unlike on the previous S21 Ultra. Instead, it rises from the surface and offers you minimal camera bump. The design looks elegant and premium without a doubt with an S-Pen on the bottom housing. Also, the front and back get Gorilla Glass Victus Plus protection. While the aluminum frame in the middle is also an A+ grade according to Samsung.

On the other hand, iPhone inherited the same design language from its predecessor, iPhone 12 Pro. A notch on the front for housing Face ID and a triple camera on the back with the same module as of previous gen. The volume rockers and alert slider sit on the left side whereas the power key is placed on the left. The front and back are protected by Gorilla Glass plus ceramic shield. Plus, the middle frame is made up of surgical-grade stainless steel.

Coming on the display section, Samsung has implemented a 6.8″ Super AMOLED, 2nd Gen LTPO Panel with a 120Hz refresh rate. Pioneer in the display technology, Samsung has kept the peak brightness here at 1750 nits. With 500 PPI, the Quad HD+ display is arguably the best in class. Also, the screen can go as low as 1Hz for lower battery consumption.

Apple has its Super Retina XDR display with ProMotion (Fast Refresh Rate). The 6.1″ panel is also an AMOLED with a 120Hz refresh rate. But it relies on the 1st Gen LTPO technology that can go only as low as 10Hz. Nevertheless, the display is wonderful on the iPhone 13 Pro. The PPI is 450 over here and the display can go up to 1200 nits of max brightness for HDR.

When it comes to the size of these two phones, the names say it all: Max and Ultra don’t exactly scream small, do they? In terms of pure size, Samsung has the edge here – its 6.8-inch Dynamic AMOLED display just pips the iPhone 13 Pro Max’s 6.7-inch Super Retina OLED screen. Dig a little deeper into its specs and the Samsung screen has the marginal upper hand in other ways, too.

It also has a 240Hz touch sampling rate while in Game Mode. 

Add to this the Vision Booster (which optimises colour vividness regardless of brightness level), Eye Comfort Shield and a peak brightness of 1750 nits (making it the brightest screen ever to feature in a Samsung Galaxy S phone) and you’ve got a screen to behold.

In terms of pure specs, the iPhone 13 Pro Max can’t compete on paper. Its ProMotion display also has a maximum refresh rate of 120Hz, and can scale down – but only as low as 10Hz.

Its OLED is brighter than its predecessor’s, but still not a patch on Samsung’s. Apple only discusses an average brightness increase (from 800 nits on the 12 Pro Max to 1000 nits) in relation to use of the phone outside – it doesn’t allude to any changes to HDR video peak brightness, which is said to be 1200 nits, as it was last year. Again, that’s quite a bit lower than the S22 Ultra’s 1750 nits.

However, this is purely on paper. Ask yourself this: will the average user be able to tell the difference between the S22 Ultra’s low refresh rate of 1Hz and the iPhone 13 Pro Max’s 10Hz? Probably not. After all, what’s 9Hz between friends? In our tests, it amounted to very little and we’d consider it a draw between the titans here, both in terms of brightness and a snappy but smooth display when gaming or watching Netflix. 

Design and display

Starting off with the Galaxy S22 Ultra, the design shows off a resigned camera module and will come in several colours, including Black, Green, White and Dark Red.

The handset is made from Armour Aluminium with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus Plus on both the front and the back to keep the phone from cracking or scratching. The AMOLED display received certification for 100% mobile colour volume in the DCI-P3 colour range, meaning that the colours will be vivid regardless of the screen brightness.

The 6.8-inch screen can reach a peak brightness of 1750 nits, with an adaptive refresh rate of 120Hz and 240Hz touch sampling rate when in Game Mode.

For anyone not in the know, an adaptive refresh rate means that the refresh rate will change depending on your activity; playing a game or watching media will hike up the rate to 120Hz to ensure a smoother experience, but the rate will drop low if you’re looking at a block of text, so it can save battery.

Plus, the Galaxy S22 Ultra is the first Samsung S Series phone that will come with an S Pen. It will come with a silo and the latency has apparently been reduced from up to 9ms to 2.8ms for more natural handwriting, alongside updated Wacom technology and the anticipation of AI.

Comparing this to the iPhone 13 Pro, the four colour options are Graphite, Gold, Silver and Sierra Blue. The 6.1-inch OLED Super Retina XDR display comes with ProMotion at 120Hz, which is Apple’s version of an adaptive refresh rate.

The pixel resolution sits at 2532×1170 with a maximum nit count of 1,000, meaning it will be a less vivid and bright screen than the S22 Ultra.

The design is very similar to many of the iPhone’s we’ve seen before, with a slightly smaller notch for the front camera and a ceramic shield front with a textured matt glass back.

Battery

Samsung lists the S22 Ultra as featuring a 5000mAh battery, but mentioned that the actual life of the phone will vary depending on usage patterns and your network environment when we asked how many hours it would actually last.

The only other battery detail Samsung’s disclosed is that it can be charged up to 45W when you purchase the charger, which should charge the phone up to 50% in less than 20 minutes. When using wireless charging it can be charged up to 15W, which in our experience testing other phones with similar capabilities will take a lot longer to charge the handset.

Seeing as we haven’t had the chance to try out this handset yet, we can’t make any claims on how long the S22 Ultra will last during day to day activities, but we’ll be sure to investigate how it holds up when we get the chance to test it out.

On the other hand, the iPhone 13 Pro can be charged with a 20W charger, with our model managing to hit 15% battery in nine minutes and 50% charge in 30 minutes.

The 13 Pro also supports MagSafe charging, which sits at 15W, and the standard 7.5W Qi charging solution.

Preferences are subjective. I will let you decide. The S22 Ultra would be my clear choice if I was deciding on a device solely on its design.

Both devices perform equally well in terms of performance. The iPhone 13 Pro Max will perform better under heavy tasks because the A15 Bionic delivers more performance and consumes less power than Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.

Again, the cameras are equally excellent. If photos are important to you, the S22 Ultra is your best choice. The iPhone 13 Pro Max is the best for video. The iPhone 13 Pro Max takes great pictures; the S22 Ultra’s zooming capabilities and low-light performance are better.
