Samsung’s Galaxy S22 Ultra features the company’s most heavily revamped camera array in years. Not only does it come in with five total shooters, thanks to its dual telephoto lenses, but it also manages to squeeze all of them into a package that doesn’t require any significant camera bump. The lenses do protrude from the otherwise flat back panel of the unit somewhat, but they do so individually, and nowhere near as far as the widely-panned size of the bump on some of the unit’s predecessors.
Despite the miniaturization of the camera bump, the S22 Ultra still supports the same «100X Space Zoom» as its predecessor, with the same division of labor between its 10X optical and 10X digital zooms doing the work. As with the S21 Ultra, Samsung notes that «Zooming in past 10x may cause some image deterioration.» Still, the option to push a smartphone camera to zoom levels that would otherwise require some massive photographic equipment is a nice tool to have on hand, should the need arise.
Like the S22 and S22 Plus also being released this year, the S22 Ultra also includes Samsung’s new Nightography mode, which relies on its enlarged photo sensors to gather more light, quicker. The results, according to Samsung, are clear, crisp photos and videos day or night. The S22 Ultra’s exclusive Super Clear Glass lenses are also designed to prevent annoying flares while all that light is being gathered.
On the opposite side of the coin, Apple’s iPhone Pro line both support Apple’s widely-praised, AI-based software processing which takes the photos and videos captured by the numerically inferior 12MP sensors and turns them into imagery that has consistently been able to match or beat media captured with far higher megapixel cameras in the past.
Apple’s devices also offer full support for its new Cinematic Mode, which digitally adds capabilities like rack focus to dynamically and smoothly shift the device’s focus between subjects while capturing videos.
Both of the iPhone models and the S22 also include support for photo and video formats preferred by professionals. Apple’s comes in the form of its Apple ProRAW photos and ProRes videos, while Samsung uses the standard RAW format, which can now be edited in the S22 Ultra’s Expert Raw app to provide a «a DSLR-like experience.»
In short, all three models here are photographic and videographic beasts.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra vs iPhone 13 Pro Camera
Galaxy S22 Ultra features a quad camera setup with super cool capabilities. The main camera is an f/1.8 108MP one that can capture crisp pictures with an immense amount of detail. Meanwhile, the second one is a 50MP Ultrawide sensor having 120° FOV. Following the numbers are two 10 MP telephoto lenses. One telephoto can zoom 10x optically for no loss in image details. While the other one can zoom in to 3x for capturing portrait shots. The setup here is a strong one and can capture whooping 100x photos with a respectable amount of details. The S22 Ultra is a camera powerhouse.
Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra Camera & S Pen
It also has a new improved OIS and stabilization has gotten even stronger. The super steady mode can handle running shots like a pro. For the front camera, it houses a 40MP shooter which should be more than enough for capturing awesome selfies.
Well, iPhone 13 Pro also doesn’t stand behind the on-camera performance. Consisting triple setup of 12MP main, 12MP ultrawide, and 12MP telephoto cameras, the performance is stellar here. Thanks to Apple’s chipset, OS & hardware, there is ample consistency for all three cameras. Despite having a smaller resolution, the lenses here produce amazing quality photos and can give a tough competition against the S22 Ultra. There is no 100x zoom here though. For the front side, there is a 12MP camera plus a Face ID depth measuring sensor.
iPhone 13 Pro
Apple has always been known for good cameras with good stabilization. The OIS comes into play and footage is well stabilized. However, the S22 ultra’s new super steady mode outperforms iPhone 13 Pro’s stabilization.

Smartphones have made capturing memories not only convenient but also quick. Most of the cameras in smartphones, around $500, will do the job well, and if you are spending upwards of $1,000, you’d definitely want the best. Here’s what each device has to offer:
Rear camera sensors and zooming capabilities
iPhone 13 Pro Max has a triple-camera setup at the rear and a Lidar sensor used for depth perception and 3D mapping. The primary camera is a 12MP sensor, the ultrawide camera is also a 12MP sensor with a 120-degree Field of view. Finally, the telephoto camera is also a 12MP sensor.
Further, iPhone 13 Pro Max can support 3X optical zoom. Optical zoom refers to the ability of zooming in while clicking a picture without deteriorating image quality. Digital zoom capabilities of the iPhone 13 Pro Max are up to 15X, and the image quality deteriorates with digital zoom; the iPhone retains decent details.
On the other hand, Galaxy S22 Ultra has a quad-camera setup at the rear. The primary sensor is a 108MP. Yes, the MegaPixel count is much higher, and while the normal images are clicked at 12MP due to pixel binning when shooting in RAW, the 108MP will help retain the details.
Besides, the Ultrawide camera is a 12MP sensor with a 120-degree field of view. Galaxy S22 Ultra has two 10MP telephoto lenses. While one of these supports 3X optical zoom and 34-degree FOV, the other sensor supports 10X optical zoom and 11-degree field of view.
In terms of zooming capabilities, the S22 Ultra blows the iPhone 13 Pro Max out of the water. Also, S22 Ultra has more saturated colors, and you can achieve the same on the iPhone by using the color profiles features.
Low light
The low light capabilities of both these devices are good enough for what their purpose is. However, there is no definitive winner. Both of these cameras perform equally well in terms of details, but the S22 Ultra captures slightly higher details under low lighting conditions.
Video: 8K vs. ProRes
iPhone has always dominated the video department, and it continues to do so. While the S22 Ultra can shoot videos in 8K 24FPS, the iPhone 13 Pro Max comes with ProRes video.
Both devices support Portrait mode in videos too. However, you can change the amount of bokeh after or before shooting in the iPhone 13 Pro Max; the same is not possible on the S22 Ultra. And iPhone nails the video department.
Don’t get me wrong, the video recording capabilities are good on the S22 Ultra too, but the iPhone wins by a good margin.
Galaxy S22 Ultra vs iPhone 13 Pro Max: Battle of the ecosystems
Software-wise, there isn’t much to choose when it comes to the iPhone 13 Pro Max and the Galaxy S22 Ultra. Running iOS 15 and Android 12, respectively, both are their systems’ most widely available devices in the world — Google sells Pixel phones in less than a dozen countries, and only OnePlus and Motorola/Lenovo can be found in the US among the Chinese brands, etc.

After years of criticism towards Android updates, Samsung announced that most of its phones will receive five years of security updates, and four Android version updates for its flagship devices. That is still shy of Apple’s unofficial policy — which has been updating devices for at least five years — but considerably better than most Android brands.

More than the operating systems, though, smartphone buyers are also investing in the device’s ecosystems. Both Apple and Samsung offer a wide range of apps, services, and devices that work best with other gear from the same brand.
2021 saw the arrival of one extra category of products, with Apple’s AirTag and Samsung’s SmartTag adding object trackers to their respective ecosystems, using sensors like UWB to locate luggage, keyrings, and more.
Besides that, buyers have a considerable range of smartwatches and headphones to choose from both brands. Apple’s ecosystem shine especially with its integration with the Mac PC family, while Samsung offers a wide variety of home appliances.

Specs and performance
The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra packs a 4nm processor, whether you’re talking about the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 or the Exynos 2200. The one you’ll receive depends on which region you live in. If you’re in the US, you’ll get Snapdragon while those in Europe and Australia will get the Exynos.
Early signs point to a marginal increase in performance over the previous chips, with the main gains coming from the GPU. We’ll be putting these claims to the test in due course.
If true, it’s likely that the iPhone 13 Pro Max will be the faster phone of the two. Apple claimed that its A15 Bionic chip was up to 50% faster than the Android opposition at the time of its launch. And as we’ve just discussed, the Galaxy S22 Ultra’s new chips don’t seem to provide that much of an advance.
We are interested to see how the Exynos 2200 performs in gaming terms, however. This is the first fruit of Samsung’s partnership with AMD, resulting in the same RDNA2 GPU architecture that you’ll find in the PS5 and Xbox Series X consoles.
This, technically, enables the Exynos-powered Galaxy S22 Ultra to throw about advanced ray-tracing effects. We’ll have to wait and see just how many game developers take advantage of this, but it’s exciting news for mobile gamers nonetheless.
It’s largely worthless comparing RAM capacities, given the different ways in which iOS and Android make use of their hardware resources. But for the record, the iPhone 13 Pro Max packs 6GB and the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra gives you 8 or 12GB.
Storage allotments are identical on both phones, with options for 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB.
One final stand-out spec for the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra is S Pen compatibility. Samsung has gone back to its defunct Galaxy Note range and supplied the Galaxy S22 Ultra with a built-in stylus.
By contrast, the iPhone 13 Pro Max doesn’t have support for the Apple Pencil, and it would be an unwieldy

If you’re picking between these phones based on the display alone, you’re in for a treat. The Galaxy S22 Ultra and the iPhone 13 Pro Max feature two of the biggest, baddest, and boldest screens available right now.
For its latest release, Samsung uses a gorgeous 6.8-inch 1440p display that can only be described as «industry-leading.» Our review called it the best screen ever seen on a smartphone. With a 120Hz refresh rate, everything feels smooth, fluid, and fast. A peak brightness of 1,750 nits guarantees you can see everything in direct sunlight, while Samsung’s OLED panel delivers true blacks and eye-popping colors. If you’re looking for the best display possible on a smartphone, this is the device to get.
That said, Apple’s screen technology isn’t far behind — partially because of Samsung’s status as a dominant panel supplier for other phone manufacturers. The 6.7-inch «Super Retina XDR» might sound like a mouthful, but it’s a truly fantastic screen. Its 1284 x 2778 resolution isn’t all that far behind the S22 Ultra, and for the first time on an iPhone, it sports a 120Hz refresh rate. Finally, iOS can feel as smooth as recent Android phones. Typical max brightness levels out around 1,000 nits, though HDR content gets boosted as high as 1,200 nits.
Although the S22 Ultra lacks the facial recognition hardware that is now ubiquitous with the iPhone, it benefits by minimizing intrusion in the display. Samsung opted not to use an under-display camera for its latest flagship — probably because they aren’t ready for primetime. Still, the hole punch cutout is small and easy to ignore, especially after a couple of days. Apple’s notch still removes a sizable part of the display, though that’s the trade-off required for Face ID. For some, it might be worth it. Others will likely want to steer clear of that black bar altogether.
Overall, you really can’t go wrong with either display here. With Apple finally catching up to the competition on high refresh rates, it’s truly a toss-up between two fantastic screens. After all, what really matters is the software shown on them.
S22 Ultra vs. iPhone 13 Pro Max: Which is better?#
Well, the answer you were looking for all along is not that simple.
Design is subjective, and I’m going to leave it up to you to decide. If I wanted a device solely based on the design, the S22 Ultra is a clear choice.
In the performance department, both of these devices will perform equally well. The iPhone 13 Pro Max will have better thermals under heavy tasks as the A15 Bionic can deliver more performance while consuming less power than Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.
Cameras again are equally good. One simple rule, if photos are your priority, pick the S22 Ultra. But in terms of video, there’s no beating the iPhone 13 Pro Max. The iPhone 13 Pro Max clicks good pictures, too; it’s just that zooming capabilities and low light performance is better on the S22 Ultra.
Other features like charging speeds, ports, etc., are something the S22 Ultra wins at. So, choose a device depending on what your needs are. And I will repeat myself if you are already in the Apple ecosystem, iPhone 13 Pro Max should be your singular go-to device for its unmatched convenience.

Galaxy S22 Ultra vs. iPhone 13 Pro Max: display
The iPhone 13 Pro Max features a 6.7-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display with ProMotion and a 2778 x 1284-pixel resolution. The Galaxy S22 Ultra 1-ups it at 6.8 inches, but the Dynamic AMOLED 2X display buries it when it comes to resolution at WQHD+ (3200 x 1440). Samsung also claims the adaptive refresh rate crown, scaling from 1Hz to 120Hz, compared to the iPhone’s 10Hz up to 120Hz range.
Samsung’s other big claim with the S22 Ultra display is a jump to an incredible 1,750 nits of peak brightness; if true, that would dramatically outperform the 837 peak brightness for the iPhone 13 Pro Max. We are running the Galaxy S22 Ultra through our gamut of color, accuracy and brightness testing and will update this section once that is complete.
While the iPhone may find a way to win this one, it is doubtful that Samsung is simply not challenged in the mobile display space. This is why Apple and many of Samsung’s high-end competitors use Samsung displays. Based on its track record and the advantages we already know it has, the win goes to the Galaxy S22 Ultra.
