The photographic section of the AGM Glory G1S

Now it’s time to focus on the photographic camera of this terminal. A photographic section in which first, the plain format of the camera module, at least in terms of design, since stands out conspicuously on the back of this device. We have a photographic team with three conventional lenses and with an extra that we have never seen before in a smartphone Until now.

El main sensor arrives signed by Sony, we have the Sony IMX582 Exmor RS. A sensor type CMOS with resolution of 48 Mpx and focal aperture of 1.79. We have another sensorIn this case dedicated for night vision, which has a 20MP resolution. And a latest macro sensor with a resolution of 2 Mpx and a focal aperture of 2.4.

In the same photo camera module Dual LED flash is integrated with enough power to illuminate our night catches or for places with low lighting. Nothing to write home about, but meets its purpose up to the needs, without standing out for power.

And in the center of the repeated photography module, another of the great surprises of the AGM Glory G1S, a thermal camera. In itself, it is surprising to find this type of sensor in a smartphone, but in addition, we are talking about a thermal sensor with a resolution of 256 x 192, 160 x 120 pixels, and a high frame rate of 25 Hz, much more than any conventional camera can offer today. we will be able to detect temperatures between 20º and 150º.

Photos taken with the AGM Glory G1S

We have tested the sensors and cameras of the AGM Glory G1S. For this, as we usually do, we go abroad and make different captures. We have been able to test infrared camera and thermal camera. A couple of details on which we will not be able to make any comparison, since it is the first time that we can test them.

Without a doubt, the level of utility that the infrared lens or the thermal sensor can have, can be questionable. But we have to recognize that we really liked being able to try something really new on a smartphone for the first time, something that unfortunately does not happen often.

As usual, when we use the camera with good natural lighting, we get good results. With a 48 megapixel Sony sensor, in broad daylight, the result is optimal. Good resolution, good definition, vivid colors and clearly differentiated. Without getting fancy and going into detail, the photos, under these conditions, are really good.

We have tested the infrared night vision camera. Pointing at a completely dark wall without knowing exactly where we are focusing is quite an experience. And the way the bookshelf and objects look is amazing. When the sensor has to take a night capture, things change a lot. The LED flash does its best to illuminate the scene. But it is invited to appear noise, distortion and even pixelation, and the ugly watercolor effect.

As well it is very curious to check the temperature of objects, or people around us. We can even configure the color in which we want the temperature to be represented, and various other settings. In this photo, we can see how the cup containing hot coffee appears fully illuminated due to its high temperature.

Powerful Speaker

One of the main selling points of the H5 Pro is the speakers, which AGM claims is the loudest speaker unit installed on a smartphone on the market, capable of outputting a whopping 109dB of sound, the smartphones generally come with a loudspeaker max of 85dB. This means that it is as loud as an ambulance siren and matches up to the sound of a fire alarm going off, and may damage your hearing for prolonged use. And if you look at it from the back, you will know that it is not a few holes made by AGM, but rather an integrated audio system.

And be sure that when the volume is raised to the maximum level, it will be annoyingly loud and make your eardrums completely uncomfortable. This will be excellent for long distances or in high-noise environments. In terms of sound quality, it’s a bit mediocre, especially with the increased volume, but it’s not bad at all considering the size it can go up to.

The speaker in the AGM H5 Pro comes with RGB ring light around it and it can create different lighting effects when playing music. It’s a small addition, but it works well and is most evident at night. The RGB light features six different lighting modes that can be changed from settings to give the phone a new look in seconds and these consist of: Breathe, Cycle, Spectrum, Dance, Warp, None.

What is inside the AGM Glory G1S?

It’s time to focus on what the AGM Glory G1S is capable of delivering level of performance. For this AGM has equipped this smartphone with a solvent chip and in which firms such as Nokia, Motorola, Huawei have relied or OnePlus, among others. We have the processorQualcomm Snapdragon 480.

A team octa-core8nm clocked at 2GHz and architecture of 64 bits. Its CPU is developed with 2x Kryo 460 2 GHz + 6x Kryo 460 1.8 GHz. As we know, it is not the best or most powerful processor on the market, but we can say that accomplish any task, and that it does it in a solvent way. At last there is the rugged phone that is up to the task, buy the AGM Glory G1S and don’t worry.

We have a 8GB RAM, which are complemented by a capacity of 256GB storage, which we can also expand using a Micro SD memory card. For the graphic section we have the Adreno GPU 619, which also unfolds without much problem. Definitely equipment up to what we can demand for good device performance.

How rugged is the AGM H5 Pro?

The outer shell of the AGM H5 Pro seems to be just as strong as on the Glory Pro and this is confirmed by the MIL-STD-810H certification but, unless the manufacturer discloses the actual tests that were passed by the smartphone, this certification doesn’t really tell that much.

Rugged smartphone.

In AGM’s defense, they have disclosed that the H5 Pro has survived from repeated drops from up to 5 feet, it can resist water ingress when submerged down to 5 feet for 30 minutes and that the chassis will offer protection against dust ingress up to 99%. Furthermore, the AGM H5 Pro is also IP68 and IP69K-rated which put an emphasis on the previously mentioned tests, where the smartphone has proven to resist dust and water.

I did see that the extreme temperature-resistant battery is gone (the Arctic Battery), so if you need to be exposed to that type of harsh environment, it’s better to give the AGM Glory Pro a chance. I have already mentioned the protective lip around the display which is not really that prominent, but should still provide some level of protection.

I was interested whether AGM went with Gorilla Glass this time since it hasn’t with the Glory Pro. I haven’t found any mentions that the AGM H5 Pro uses Gorilla Glass, so it’s safe to assume that it doesn’t. Which is why you should leave the pre-applied screen protector in place, to keep it scratch-free as much as possible.

The Design and Build Quality

I knew that the AGM H5 Pro looks similar to the Glory Pro before I actually received the box, but I didn’t really expect it to be pretty much identical. Well, at least on the front side. The bezel width, the teardrop approach for the front-facing camera and even the frame looks the same. It’s made of robust rubber with four elevated corners to protect the smartphone from shattering when dropped on its side. These elevated corners are more prominent on the AGM H5 Pro, but the protective lip around the display is the same.

Left: AGM Glory Pro. Right: AGM H5 Pro.

I would have preferred if it was a bit deeper to ensure a better screen protection, especially since the display is so large, therefore more vulnerable to mechanical shocks. The position of the ports and buttons is the same on the AGM H5 Pro as it was on the Glory Pro, which means that on the right side of the frame, there’s the volume rocker and the Power / Wake button. And yes, both are made of metal, which is excellent.

On the left side, there’s the User Defined Key which is orange (on the Glory Pro, it was red) and it serves the same function – you can set it as Push-to-Talk, Camera shortcut, LED torch and more. But it does not have an SOS function which is very important for people that travel a lot in isolated locations and it can make a difference if they get injured or lost.

At the bottom of the AGM H5 Pro, there’s a protective cover which, once removed, will expose the USB-C port alongside a 3.5mm jack for headphones. I didn’t expect that we would reach a point where we would rejoice at the sight of a headphones jack, yet here we are (kudos to AGM).

The USB-C port and the 3.5mm jack.

But what I didn’t like here and neither did on the AGM Glory Pro is that not all USB-C cables can be used to charge up the AGM H5 Pro. That’s because the manufacturer made the canal too narrow, so that only the cable provided into the package can be used. I guess there are always means of circumventing the rules for an universal charging port (I bet Apple is furiously taking notes). The SIM/microSD card slot is positioned in a similar manner to the Glory Pro, so you can find it above the User Defined Key and it’s also protected by a silicone cover.

I did like that there are no logos or any other flashy signature anywhere on the front side, since it made the phone look a bit more elegant and serious, but do be aware that this is a huge smartphone. If the 6.5-inch screen wasn’t a giveaway, know that the entire case is bulky, measuring 6.9 x 3.3 x 0.9 inches (17.6 x 8.5 x 2.3 cm), but the slightly better news is that the AGM Glory Pro is less heavy than the Glory Pro, weighing 12.7oz, so, not really by much.

Yes, you need a good belt when carrying this rugged smartphone around with you (I mean, you could use it as a self-defense instrument ..). The star of the show is the rear panel which does have a similar layout to what we saw on the Glory Pro.

Left: AGM Glory Pro. Right: AGM H5 Pro.

So, towards the top, there’s the circular speaker which is the same as on the more expensive Glory Pro, meaning that it can reach 109dB. It’s going to be loud, very loud, but it does suffer from the same shortcomings as well. I know it sounds cool to have a 3.5W speaker that can reproduce the sound with relative high fidelity, but how does the sound get reflected? Well, if you keep the smartphone on the table, the sound is going to get muffled and, if you hold the device in hand, it’s going to reflect on the nearby wall.

That’s why a lot of manufacturers point the speakers on the frame, so that a table or any other flat surface amplifies the sound. Still, because it’s loud, you’re going to hear what’s going on in a video, just that there will be some loss in clarity. Surrounding the speaker, there is an LED ring which doesn’t really have any purpose above the aesthetic value (if you’re into RGB).

It’s also strange that there is only a setting that turns on and off the LED ring, while also plays a song, but it’s not associated to any other app.

The LED ring.

On the left and right side of the speaker (and ring), there seems to be four cameras, but on a closer inspection, one of them is the flashlight. The other three consist of the main 48-megapixel camera, the 2-megapixel macro camera and the 20-megapixel IR night vision camera. Besides this assembly, the AGM H5 Pro is covered by an Aramid-like texture and there is a Fingerprint sensor in the middle.

And I am happy to say that it’s a better sensor than on the AGM Glory Pro. It’s not perfect since it does fail about 1 times out of four, but it’s definitely better than the Pro’s sensor which almost never works. As expected, the wireless charging is gone, but the manufacturer did leave the dock charging pins in case you want to use the optional charging station.

Decent compute, memory, and performance

The AGM Glory G1S is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 480 5G system-on-chip (SoC) and a Qualcomm Adreno 619 GPU. While its processing power does not match that of processors in high-end phones, the Snapdragon 480 is very power efficient and does not drain the Glory G1S’s 5500-mAh battery quickly. The phone has 8 gigabytes of RAM and 128 gigabytes of on-device memory, with a micro-SD slot that can extend its storage.

While the processing power is inferior to high-end phones, the performance of the Glory G1S is quite satisfying. Apps and browsers open quickly, and you can even run many games with acceptable framerate/performance.

The screen is a 2340×1080 LTPS TFT. The colors are pretty vivid and the brightness is good enough to not appear too dim under sunlight and too bright in darkness. Unfortunately, despite having the display gear and compute power for hi-res video play, the phone does not support high-resolution streaming, and you’ll get no better than 480p from services like Netflix and Disney+.

Final thoughts

Despite its shortcomings, including a less than stellar main camera, poor streaming capabilities, and non-standard OS improvements, the AGM Glory G1S 5G unlocked smartphone has a lot to offer the technical worker. The excellent battery life, adaptable camera systems, and rugged design are features that make this phone last longer and do more in the field than just about any other phone available. In the worst case, if none of the phone’s features meet your demanding expectations, this is still a world-class thermal camera with built-in Android support. However, the phone has many features typical of today’s mid-tier phones and should provide a valuable tool and enjoyable device for many users. If you are in the market for a thermal camera or rugged phone I recommend you consider the AGM Glory G1S.

Hardware

Spec Sheet

The AGM Glory 5G comes with the following hardware:

CPU: Snapdragon 480

GPU: Adreno 619

RAM: 8GB

Storage: 256GB

Screen size: 6.3-inch

Resolution: 2340×1080

Weight: 370g

Dimensions: 175 x 84 x 23mm

Rear camera: 48MP, 48MP, 48MP

Front camera: 16MP

OS: Android 11

Battery: 6.2Ah

The Glory 5G runs on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 480, which also powers the aforementioned XR20 and DuraSport 5G. It is a popular platform but clearly aimed at an entry level, price sensitive crowd that’s more interested in productivity and less in playing the latest games.

The rest of the specification list includes 8GB of LPDDR4x RAM, 256GB UFS2.2 onboard storage, Bluetooth 5.1, NFC and Wi-Fi 6. The main camera sensor is a 48-megapixel Sony IMX582 with a 20-megapixel night vision sidekick (with two IR LEDs) and last but not least, a 2-megapixel Macro camera.

AGM also claims that the battery on the Glory can last a staggering 24 hours at temperatures as low as minus 27 degrees. An 18W QC-compatible power charger is bundled with the Glory.

Design

The Glory is radically different from its more elegant predecessors, the X1, X2 and X3 that we reviewed over the past five years. Its looks will divide opinions and we have to admit that we’re not big fans of the current design philosophy. The X3 was — to some extent — the precursor of slim rugged smartphones like the Nokia XR20 or the Kyocera DuraSport 5G. AGM’s latest handset takes a completely different approach.

AGM has finally given in and adopted the same utilitarian (some might say brash) design of its peers with plenty of rubber (AKA double injection plastic with TPU protection), a dash of (red) color and the sort of pattern, especially at the back, that you’d expect to see in a sci-fi movie. Let’s start there, shall we?

The first thing you notice when you take the Glory out of its box is a huge speaker at the back. We often complain how most vendors tend to stick with one tiny one, usually hidden behind an equally inconspicuous grill. Well, this one is the exact opposite; the speaker grill is huge, about 33mm, in diameter and hides a driver of the same size. It has a maximum output of 3.5W which is probably one order of magnitude more than what your average entry level portable Bluetooth speaker can deliver.

Three camera sensors and one LED flash are dispersed in a ring surrounding the speaker, which procures an alien-like look to the device. Further down the back are a fingerprint sensor and four POGO pins for optional accessories and the wireless charger.

Elsewhere, there’s a flap that hides a Type-C connector as well as a 3.5mm earphone plug.

On the left is a red customizable button while on the right are located the power button and the volume rocker. Atop of the device sits a laser rangefinder.

The screen is a gorgeous 6.53-inch FHD+ display with a 16-megapixel selfie camera bang in the middle of the top edge; AGM didn’t mention whether there’s any Gorilla Glass scratch protection. The Glory is IP68, IP69K and MIL-STD-810H rated, which means that it is waterproof (just make sure that the rubber flap is in place) and dustproof as well.

In use and performance

Benchmarks

This is how the AGM Glory 5G performed in our suite of benchmark tests:

PCMark (Work 2.0): 8901

Passmark: 6484

Passmark CPU: 2879

Androbench (sequential): 484 (sequential read); 318 (sequential write)

Androbench (random): 18 (random read); 19 (random write)

3DMark  Wild Life Vulkan: 983

We couldn’t wait to try the sound speaker on this beast. We can confirm that it is by far the loudest speaker on a smartphone we’ve heard to date; shame that it is mono. AGM says that it can deliver sounds of up to 110dB, sadly, we couldn’t test this claim. Our subjective aural test allowed us to appreciate the audio performance of the speaker. It is capable of delivering both punchy notes and subtle ones but don’t expect miracles, given the form factor.

As for performance in general, the Glory performs on par with other smartphones equipped with a Snapdragon 480 chipset. That is, it will not break any performance records, but will serve its users well as long as non-casual games are out of the picture. The only sore point we identified was the low random read/write speeds, which shouldn’t be much of an issue for most users. It wasn’t for us during our synthetic benchmarks or when we used it briefly.

As expected it runs on a stock version of Android 11 and other than the fact that it comes with GMS ( Mobile Services), the Glory has few bundled apps like Zello and a voice recorder. Both the laser rangefinder and the infrared camera were simple to operate and matched their expectations. Unlike similarly-configured rivals like the Blackview BL6000 Pro, the Glory comes with a two-year warranty.

Two minute review

Kitchen sink is what came to mind when we first heard of the AGM Glory, a rugged smartphone that aims to offer as many features as possible. Its most obvious feature is the massive speaker that adorns its back and is the most powerful we’ve heard on a smartphone. It justifies AGM’s decision to “go large” with the Glory and deliver a product that’s about three times the thickness of your average high end Android device.

Add in 8GB of RAM, 256GB onboard storage, wireless charging, a two year warranty, a battery that can sustain very low temperatures (and still be operational), an IR camera and a laser rangefinder and you’ve got a pretty compelling outdoor smartphone whose only real achilles’ heel is the relatively slow Qualcomm 5G processor.

The Glory G1S, a true off-roader

We have been able to test several devices with the commercial name of rugged phone, or rugged phone. But in practice they end up being conventional smartphones disguised with rugged looks. This is not, at all, the case of this AGM smartphone, and we can assure this based on the features it has in this regard.

Addition materials in which it is built, and the high level of detail that its design has so that the device is safe from falls or bumps, we found up to three certifications that say a lot about its high level of resistance.

The Glory G1S features IP-68 and IP69K certification. This means that will withstand immersion in water for up to thirty minutes de up to a meter and a half deep. And in addition, it is expressly designed so that its components resist no leaks even to pressurized water or steam cleaning.

And besides, it has the military-grade certification called MIL STD 810H. It is literally nothing more than a United States military standard that focuses on tailoring the environmental design and test limits of a military piece of equipment to the conditions it will survive in during its useful life. Something that says a lot about how «tough» this device will turn out.

Hardware

The AGM Glory G1S is a big phone, measuring 315 grams. Given the cameras, large battery, and rugged features, it makes sense. When you are working out in the field, it is nice to have a big display for viewing information, and the high level of durability is appreciated with frequent drops.

The 6.53-inch display has a resolution of 2340 x 1080 pixels, with a small central notch for the front-facing camera. The display is very bright and easily viewable outside, thankfully. There are some wider bezels at the top and bottom, but I am actually impressed by the narrow side bezels for such a rugged phone. An orange line highlights the frame of the display.

Handy laser pointer on the top of the phone.

The volume and power button are positioned on the right side, with a durable lanyard opening in the bottom right corner. A programmable hardware button — in a textured orange finish — accents the left side, while the SIM card and microSD card tray are on the right side. The four corners have extra TPU material to protect the phone from drops, similar to how protective cases are designed.

In addition to a microphone opening, a unique red laser pointer is situated on top of the phone. This can be toggled on and off through a quick control button in the notification shade. From my use, the laser pointer was very handy for pointing out objects to others. I just wish it had the capability to serve as a laser range finder.

A rubber port cover can be removed from the bottom to reveal a USB-C port and 3.5mm headset jack. The USB-C port is inset from the bottom so you need to have a USB-C cord that fits into the port for charging.

You can also charge up the AGM Glory G1S through its $20 dock accessory. With the dock, you can set the phone down into the slot and it will charge via the four pin connections on the lower back of the phone. The charging dock is all powered by USB-C.

Leave the bottom ports covered and charge in the dock.

The back of the AGM Glory G1S is one of the most distinguished features of the phone, with a radical upper rear half that houses five openings: three cameras and a flashlight. The camera system includes a 48MP Sony IMX582, a 2MP macro, and a 20MP Sony IMX350 infrared night vision lens.

In the center, the infrared thermal imaging camera sits proudly. To test, I tried out night vision while camping and the imaging sensor was certainly helpful for getting through trails in dark conditions. There’s also a rear fingerprint sensor that regular readers will know I love for its ergonomics, accessibility, and reliability.
