As you’d expect from a rugged phone, the XCover6 Pro sports an IP68 rating and a MIL-STD-810H certified design, which means it is certified by the military to withstand particular conditions like heat, cold, and shock.

Although Samsung avoids some modern annoyances with its removable battery and headphone jack, it’s kept to the current trend of a mostly empty box. The XCover6 Pro doesn’t ship with a charging brick, so all that’s included is a USB-C to USB-C cable and the quick start guide with some basic instructions.

Design and display

Right out of the box, the Samsung XCover6 Pro is not a typical smartphone, and hopefully, you knew that before you opened it up. It’s certainly light compared to other ruggedized devices, but as someone used to reviewing consumer-facing products, I thought at first that the XCover6 came with a case already pre-installed. Quickly, I realized what I had mistaken for a case was actually its plastic body. That’s right — the XCover6 Pro does away with the rubberized body of other rugged devices, which does mean it’s a bit less, well, rugged.

It may not be rubberized, but the back of the XCover6 Pro is ribbed to deliver a durable feel. The back also detaches easily to reveal the removable battery, a nostalgic feature I didn’t know I missed in smartphones. The small metal slot above the battery is where you’ll install your SIM card, which you can only do by removing the battery, a fact I had forgotten in the modern age of exterior SIM card slots (and sealed batteries).

As for the other ports and holes on the XCover6 Pro, you’ll find a lot of the basics. The standby button — which doubles as a fingerprint sensor — is flush against the right edge and is flanked above by the two volume buttons. On the bottom, you’ll find the USB-C port as well as a very basic mono speaker, perfectly placed to accidentally block audio when holding it with one hand.

Along the top of the XCover6 Pro, you’ll find the headphone jack (another nostalgic win) and the top key, a small, red, textured button that can be programmed to interact with apps on your phone to perform specific tasks. By default, the top key is set to operate the flashlight, turning it on and off with each click. You can even program it to work when your phone is locked, but if it accidentally turns on in your pocket, it’s going to drain the battery.

In addition to the top key, the XCover6 Pro features the XCover key, a much larger, textured red button on the left edge of the device, which can also be programmed for actions for a simple click and for press and hold actions. This means that there are four customizable actions that you can access with this smartphone, two for each button on the top and right.

While four shortcuts seem like a lot, I honestly found this quite convenient, and I can only imagine how great it is for those working on a job site. The flashlight hotkey alone made it worth the while, allowing for the most seamless illumination process on a smartphone I’ve ever experienced, significantly better than the Motorola double chop, as it won’t risk soliciting odd looks from strangers in public.

The XCover6 Pro’s display performs quite admirably compared to other rugged devices. It matches even some of the best flagship phones with a 120Hz refresh rate and the bezels are small enough to give you a respectable 77.8% screen-to-body ratio on the 6.6-inch PLS LCD. Plus, the display is equipped with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus+, which is how it survived a few two-foot drops on our vinyl floor and a few medium-strength whacks against the metal lid of my water bottle.

Samsung Galaxy XCover 6 Pro review: The verdict

Does Samsung succeed in making a sleek phone that’s as durable as its bulky competitors? The short answer is, almost. While the Gorilla Glass Victus Plus on the front display is plenty strong and it has all the top-tier certifications for a durable device, the plastic backside won’t be able to take nearly as many blows. Samsung may have avoided that had it gone for a rubberized or metal approach, but such is the catch-22 of having a removable plastic back so you can swap out the battery.

For myself, the unique advantages of the Galaxy XCover 6 Pro easily outweigh not having the utmost durability, making it one of the most attractive options in the rugged phone arena. Being a Samsung phone, there’s no shortage of software longevity and usability, and I appreciated the revival of practical features such as the LED indicator, headphone jack, and customizable buttons. The smooth performance is also a real boon over the competition which tend to be sluggish to use.

Compared to the more expensive, aging, and yet still very popular Cat S62 Pro ($520 at Amazon), the XCover 6 Pro is equally durable, with the advantage of 5G connectivity, a long-term update policy, a better processor, and a slightly bigger battery — though it doesn’t have a thermal imaging camera. The slightly cheaper Nokia XR20 ($430.32 at Amazon) is a little more stylish, with the same durability standards, and has a bigger battery and faster charging. Still, its Snapdragon 480 chipset lags well behind the XCover6 Pro’s 778 chip, and the fingerprint reader isn’t as fast or consistent.

While it’s not the most durable phone out there, the XCover 6 Pro is a sleek daily driver with solid mid-range specs for those who need a little extra protection.

If you tend to drop your phone a lot, don’t want to use a case, and don’t care for the most premium cameras, then the XCover 6 Pro is a dependable daily driver. If that’s enough for you and you aren’t planning to upgrade your phone for a while, I can see the XCover 6 Pro lasting for several years without hardware breakage or performance slow-down, backed by extensive software support.

On the other hand, if you need something more durable for extreme working conditions, and don’t care about how your phone looks or performs, then you might want to check out the sturdiest options on our best rugged phones list.

A thin yet durable rugged phone for a competitive price

One of the very few phones that still offers a removable battery, which means you can switch out the 4,050mAh capacity in seconds. It runs on a Snapdragon 778G processor to offer mid-range performance and runs Android 12 out of the box. You get the highest durability standards with Gorilla Glass Victus Plus, IP68 water resistance, and MIL-STD-810H certification.

Performance, battery life, and two-way audio

The actual reality of the Samsung XCover6 Pro’s performance isn’t nearly as doom and gloom. Certainly, the Snapdragon 778G is not up to par with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 found in flagships like the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, but this reviewer didn’t experience any lag, even while downloading app updates and viewing a comedy special on YouTube’s minimized, multitasking-friendly view. Basically, compared to other rugged phones, the XCover6 Pro packs a punch, and overperforms compared to other competitors on the market today.

Though the phone initially shipped with Android 12 out of the box, in February, it got an update to Android 13 with One UI 5, packing all the bells and whistles found on Samsung’s most recent iteration. The device is set to , so it will be eligible for Android 14 when that arrives later this year. So far, the XCover6 Pro has gotten monthly security updates, so you can safely assume that Samsung is planning to take care of this smartphone like its other consumer-facing devices.

This phone’s battery life is pretty impressive, sporting a removable 4,050mAh battery, which is also found in its predecessor. The battery isn’t as big as power-focused devices like the Moto G Power, but thanks to its weaker specs, this battery still manages to last a long time, getting me through the day and then some on a single charge. Even more impressive, when left alone on the counter at 100 percent, the XCover6 Pro lasted around four days before finally giving up the ghost. Plus, if the phone does die prematurely, you can always swap out the dead battery with a replacement.

Arguably one of the primary draws of the XCover6 Pro as a rugged smartphone for work is its ability to utilize two-way audio functionality, or Push to Talk, which is why we were given two devices to test out the feature. While the XCover key can be customized to use any app, it’s perfectly positioned to act as a talk button for Push to Talk, although you’ll have to make sure it isn’t assigned to any other apps to make sure it works.

The audio is surprisingly crystal clear, although I’ll admit I haven’t used a walkie-talkie in 20 years. If you’re on a job site, it’s certain to be an excellent way to communicate, but for those picking up the phone as a single unit, you’re unlikely to actually use Push to Talk in your daily life.

Availability, network, and pricing

The Samsung XCover6 Pro is available on the Samsung website for $600, putting it in the same range as the Pixel 7, but you can get a substantial volume discount as a business looking to buy in bulk with a Samsung Business Account. The rugged smartphone phone initially launched globally last July before arriving in the US in the fall. In addition to the Samsung website, you can get the phone on Amazon, but you’ll be out of luck on the potential volume discount.

The Samsung XCover6 Pro is available on all three major carriers if you’re buying or business, and you can purchase the device as a consumer unlocked for just $480 if that’s the way you want to go. As should be expected from a phone for business, it comes in one color: black.

Tough enough for first responders

Unlike consumer mobile devices, Galaxy XCover6 Pro is built to be military-grade. It has been tested against the Department of Defense’s MIL-STD-810 standards for durability. Galaxy XCover6 Pro also meets the IP68 standard for dust and water resistance. To become IP68-certified, Galaxy XCover6 Pro kept working after being submerged in 5 feet of water for 30 minutes at a time.

Equipped with a more durable Corning Gorilla Glass Victus+ display, Galaxy XCover6 Pro is the toughest Samsung Galaxy mobile device yet. At the same time, increased touch sensitivity supports input from regular leather gloves up to 2mm thick or even wet hands. First responders can clean their Galaxy XCover6 Pro with hand sanitizer without worrying about damage, providing added peace of mind while they’re at work.

Samsung Galaxy Xcover 6 Pro powered by a Qualcomm SM7325 Snapdragon 778G 5G (6 nm) chipset. The chipset offers two uad-core Kyro 670 processors clocked at 2.4GHz and 1.8GHz respectively. It has an Adreno 642L GPU for graphics and runs on Android 12 OS with One UI 4.1 on top. This is the same chipset we saw on the Galaxy A73 5G.

The Samsung phone sports 6GB RAM and 128GB built-in storage with a dedicated microSD slot for storage expansion via memory cards.

You also get a removable 4050 mAh battery, which means you can easily swap out the battery yourself when need be without requiring a technician. You get 15W fast charging support.

Достоинства: 1. Заряд (после отключения и удаления Гугло-шлака, в первую очередь Маркета!!!11! one1) за день расходуется процентов на 10% в режиме маршрутка-работа-маршрутка-дом. Если не лениться выключать за собой все передачи данных, не жечь дисплей и не играть — думаю, что дней 5 выдержит. 2. Фонарик. Наконец-то нормальный фонарик в защищённом Гнусмасе! 3. Достаточно чувствительное радио, правда без наушников оно не работает) 4. Минимум установленного левака и возможность его адекватного удаления (поставил сверху только Яндекс-Маркет, Аимп, Мапс Ми и Калькулятор++) 5. Звук очень впечатлил для защищённого аппарата. 6. Аппаратные кнопки весьма удобны в горизонтальном положении под правой рукой. 7. Сама сборка достаточно аккуратна и явных люфтов между бутафорской бронёй нет.

Недостатки: Претензии только по корпусу. Он… ну… как верно написали в обзорах: «городской экстремал». Дров этим телефоном лучше не колоть. Стекло и задняя панель не вызывают восторгов и явной уверенности в выдержке. Задняя крышка, кстати, будет жива пока от неё не отклеится силиконовый уплотнитель. Потом телефон уже не искупаешь, инфа 146%. Отдельно скажу, что телефон весьма тонок. Кому-то и понравится, но с мужицкой лапой телефон либо выскальзывает из ладони, либо попадаешь пальцами на экран, если сжимать крепче.

Комментарий: Искал замену старому Samsung GT-C3350 Xcover, и после долгих копаний в китайских кирпичах остановился на нём. Ибо аккуратный и весьма приятный на вид аппарат со всеми современными протоколами. Про качество камеры и приблуды самсунговской прошивки нечего говорить отдельно, этот не тот телефон, где к подобному могут быть претензии. И в игры на нём не играть. Одно слово — терпимо (для технического специалиста). Зато по совокупности внешнего вида, удобства, батареи и «защиты» (хых) – крайне удачное сочетание для Самсунга. На декабрь 2015 года я бы отдал за него 14-15 тыс, но по факту выложил все 16400 руб. Ставлю крепкую 4 исключительно за странную погоню изготовителя за мнимой толщиной. Толстое стекло и задница могли бы укрепить корпус, увеличить батарею и увеличить хват рукой. Я рекомендую этот телефон всем непритязательным бродягам, которые могут посреди рабочей недели очнуться с бодуна на даче в -15 за несколько км от станции. Или, например, ищут надолго самодостаточную рабочую лошадку без изысков для повседневной работы в цеху.

From the outside, the first thing that strikes you is that the Galaxy XCover6 Pro offers more buttons and ports than other smartphones. At the head end, for example, is the button simply called the “top button” in the Android settings, which can be conveniently linked to two functions for pressing or pressing and holding. Both actions can each be linked to an app, for example the flashlight, the camera or the Google Wallet.

Right next to this button is the smartphone’s status LED, which flashes when there are notifications or battery warnings that have not yet been retrieved. The LED makes sense in that there’s no always-on screen that would allow for notifications to be previewed. At the head end, users will also find the 3.5mm jack to connect wired headphones and headsets if they don’t want to rely on Bluetooth 5.2 for the connection.

On the left is the almost huge “XCover button” in the frame, where users can store two actions in Android that are triggered by pressing once or pressing and holding. In addition to the top button, this button can also be used as a shutter button within the camera app.

Speaking of the camera: As with other Samsung smartphones, this can be started by pressing the power button twice. Alternatively, the quick start of an app can also be stored here. Pressing and holding the power button activates the Samsung assistant Bixby by default, alternatively you can put the shutdown menu there.

In total, the device has three buttons, each of which can be assigned twice. Especially in the business environment, this extensive quick access to several functions of the smartphone without having to unlock it can be very practical and, above all, faster. The large XCover button in particular can be operated well with gloves, as a self-experiment with a thinner pair showed. It’s just a pity that the two volume buttons on the left could no longer be placed there due to the XCover button. They are located very high on the right side of the case and are difficult to reach even with large hands.

Camera

Samsung has given the camera on the Galaxy XCover 6 Pro an update over its two predecessors. Like the Galaxy XCover Pro, it has two sensors and lenses, one more than the Galaxy XCover 5. The main camera on this latest generation has a 50MP sensor, versus 25MP and 16MP on the XCover Pro and XCover 5, respectively. The second (ultrawide) camera appears to be the same as on the XCover Pro. This one has an 8MP sensor.

Clearly, on a device like the Galaxy XCover 6 Pro, it is not about the best camera performance. However, it is nice if you can use it to take functional photos while working. For users for whom the XCover 6 Pro is also their personal device, it should be able to offer just a little bit more than that in de camera department. As far as we’re concerned, the camera on this device is suitable for that second scenario as well. In daylight, it shoots fine photos, although the colors are a bit oversaturated here and there. The latter is no surprise for a Samsung device, by the way. The sharpness is otherwise good, even in less well-lit environments.

So far, none of this is all that surprising. It is quite common these days to shoot acceptable photos in daylight. Developments in sensors and lenses for smartphones have gone very fast. You really don’t need a top-of-the-line smartphone anymore to be able to take nice pictures. Also, no one expects the Galaxy XCover 6 Pro to match the Galaxy S23 Ultra in camera performance.

Whereas in daylight it’s generally all perfectly usable these days, cheaper/older smartphone cameras often falter when ambient light decreases. However, the Galaxy XCover 6 Pro does just fine in this regard as well. Below you can see two photos we took in the dark with this smartphone.

To illustrate, we post the same photos again below, but taken with the Google Pixel 7 Pro. The saturation is clearly different (more realistic especially), but they are not otherwise vastly better. This while the Pixel 7 Pro is known as a device with an excellent camera. The Galaxy XCover 6 Pro’s photos are definitely usable, in our opinion.

Conclusion

For this conclusion, we also recalled our conclusion from the review on the Samsung Galaxy XCover 5. Where we said then that it was objectively not a very good smartphone, that is no longer the case with the Samsung Galaxy XCover 6 Pro. For general use, this is also objectively a good device. Only the battery life could have been a little better as far as we are concerned.

For the target group Samsung is aiming the Galaxy XCover 6 Pro at, the following aspects are interesting:

It is a ruggedized device so it can take a beating. This extends the lifespan and makes the depreciation of the device more interesting;
It is a fully functional and full-fledged smartphone, with some clever hardware features aimed at use in demanding environments;
The device has a replaceable battery. In business environments where you really don’t want downtime from your mobile devices, this is definitely a plus;
The Enterprise Edition label means you can keep the Galaxy XCover 6 Pro in use for a long time. You get security updates for longer than devices that do not have such a label. In addition, you can get started with the Knox Suite if you wish.

Finally, there’s the price. At 609 euros, including VAT, the recommended retail price is higher than it has been so far for an XCover model. Compared to the 509 euros for the XCover Pro from a few years ago, that 100 euros extra brings a fair amount of benefits. We think this extra price is certainly justifiable. Comparisons with the Galaxy XCover 5 don’t make a lot of sense, because that really was/is an entry-level device. Samsung still sells that device on its own website, so that is also still an option.

All in all, the Samsung Galaxy XCover 6 Pro is highly recommended for organizations looking for a ruggedized device that can also hold up well as a smartphone for general use in work environments. This makes it the first in this line that we rate as such. The XCover line has (finally) come of age.
