Tizen 7.0 gets new smart features
Samsung’s 2023 TV lineup runs on an updated version of the company’s Tizen operating system. Tizen 7.0 is said to boast a host of “new and updated features, including 3D Map View, Chat Together and ConnecTime”.
In other words, Samsung has made it easier to enter a live chat ‘watchalong’ session and share your views on, say, a particular cast member’s acting, transfer video calls from your Samsung phone/tablet to your shiny new Samsung TV, and control all your SmartThings devices on a room-by-room basis, using a 3D map.
Talking of smart home kit, Samsung has announced that the SmartThings Zigbee & Matter Thread One-Chip Module will be directly built into selected Samsung TVs. That means the likes of the QN900C and QN95C will double up as fuss-free smart home hubs. Nice.

Here are my final thoughts. If you’re looking for the best lifestyle TV you can buy right now that will look great in any room when mounted, the Samsung Frame TV is the one to get – there’s nothing else like it at the moment.
It not only looks great, but it also performs better than I expected when watching movies and playing games. There’s something really satisfying about getting great performance out of a TV that then when turned off, transforms into a work of art. To me, it’s not a gimmick but rather a really welcome transformation to the living room.
You will, however, have to pay for it and deal with the insanely clunky menus and user interface. And for those looking for the best screen performance – such as a home theater setup or a gaming-only TV – there are better alternatives, such as LG’s G3, Sony’s A95K, or even Samsung’s S95C – but you will pay top dollar for them.
If you’re interested in The Frame, I’d recommend saving up for the 55″ or larger size so you don’t miss out on the 4K 120Hz with VRR, which is great for gaming.
So, overall, this was an overwhelmingly positive review that was not influenced in any way by Samsung. In fact, they even approached me with the opportunity to sponsor this video, which I declined in order to share all of my honest opinions with you.

As always, Samsung used January’s CES tech-stravaganza to spotlight its top-tier TVs. But what about those of us who don’t want to dig deep into our pockets for a new Samsung TV? Well, good news: we’re told that there will be three new non-QLED models – the CU7000, CU8000 and CU8500.
These so-called ‘Crystal UHD’ TVs will boast the same Tizen platform as their QLED counterparts, including integrated apps for cloud gaming. The CU8000/8500 also add support for Multi View, which allows for split-screen viewing of two sources at once. These more premium models get a fancier, ‘Air Slim’ design, too. The only difference between the CU8000 and CU8500 is apparently the stand design.
Hopefully, Samsung has put a concerted effort into the performances of these Crystal UHD models. Samsung’s produced some of the very best cheap TVs of the last few years, but 2022’s BU8000 and BU8500 were seriously disappointing.

The Frame (2023) can be thought of as a polite update to what has been a top-selling line for Samsung for many years. It’s less power hungry, but manages to deliver virtually the same picture and sound performance.
The provision of a matt screen makes digital artwork look surprisingly convincing.
The set comes with a polished smart platform, in the shape of the latest Tizen OS. In addition to a wide variety of streaming services, there’s a handy dashboard for control of SmartThings devices.
The lack of Dolby Vision support would normally warrant an automatic demerit, but the gallery nature of The Frame means it’s less likely to appeal to home cinema fans, so we’ll give the set a pass.
With its newfound energy efficiency, I remain a fan of The Frame. This lifestyle screen still comes highly recommended.

What makes it unique is the solar technology; there are no batteries to replace. The solar panel on its back charges it, and there is a USB-C port at the bottom if you need to charge it manually. It’s a win for convenience and sustainability, but to be honest, it’s a little annoying that the remote lacks a direct input source change button.
The built-in 40-watt speakers sound good for all types of content, but the bass is lacking, which is to be expected. However, there is support for Dolby Atmos and Samsung Q-Symphony, which uses the TV speakers in conjunction with supported Samsung soundbars to provide a multi-channel sound experience without the need for additional speakers.
I don’t have a Samsung soundbar, but I do have Sonos Arc soundbar in white, which looks great in this setup. It is still one of the best soundbars available today, and it complements the Frame TV both visually and audibly.
They’re paired in a home theater setup with the new Era 300, so I have two of these on a stand next to the couch, and combined with the Arc soundbar and spatial audio capability, it’s one of the best surround sound setups I’ve ever used.
It’s an incredible pairing, perhaps even better than Samsung’s own S800B soundbar, that transforms even the most mundane TV shows into epic soundscapes.

Straight from the box, The Frame may look like any other Samsung flat-screen, but its true nature emerges when you dress it with optional artwork-style frames. There’s a wide variety of frames available, from minimalistic to extravagant.
There’s also the option of a tripod-style Studio Stand, which adds another interiors option.
If you don’t want to hang the set on the wall or park it on a stand, there are a pair of plastic slot-in feet provided in the box for regular AV furniture.
Connectivity is handled by an external One Connect box, which minimises cable clutter — all your sources connect to this rather than the screen itself. The One Connect Box boasts four HDMI ports, with eARC compatibility on HDMI 3 and 4K 120Hz support on HDMI 4.
It also has a digital optical audio output, Ethernet, dual-band Wi-Fi, USB ports, and a CI card slot. A single cable runs from the One Connect Box to the screen, which provides power, as well as sound and vision.
As found on all Samsung Smart TVs, the Tizen Smart platform offers a rich array of streaming services, including Netflix, Prime Video, and Disney+. There’s also SmartThings integration and a dedicated Game Hub. A handy Game Menu provides an overlay of relevant settings, including VRR (Variable Refresh Rate), HDR and input lag.

There’s no significant change to the way you use the Tizen-connected platform. Content is arranged in themed and curated rails. There’s also an Ambient Mode if you want to display your own JPEGs.
Voice control is available via Bixby, Assistant, or Amazon Alexa. There’s also support for Apple AirPlay. Smartphone compatibility includes Multi-View and screen mirroring modes.
You might also want to subscribe to Samsung’s Art Store service which provides a vast selection of licensed artistic content, making The Frame a true digital canvas.
As we’ve seen from other Samsung QLEDs, there are actually two Game Mode settings: Original and Game Motion Plus. The latter adds extra processing for more picture embellishment. We measured input lag at 10.7ms (1080/60) in Game Mode, and 13ms (1080/60) with Game Motion Plus engaged, both of which can be considered good figures.
The Frame comes with two remote controls, a solar-powered Bluetooth pointer, and a standard button-strewn wand. Both have shortcut buttons for streaming services, as well as Samsung TV Plus, the brand’s own internet-delivered FAST (Free Advertising Supported TV) channels.

If you’re looking for a significant uptick in picture quality on this 2023 The Frame edition, you’ll be disappointed. It’s very much comparable to The Frame 2022. The performance jump relates to an improvement in power consumption, rather than image processing.
While both versions are rated ‘G’ for energy consumption, the 2023 55-inch Frame I tested consumes 84kWh/1000h, compared to 103kWh/1000h on the 2022 model.

Not that this helpful saving has diminished the image in any way. In its default Standard preset, pictures remain characteristically bright and colour rich.
Picture quality wise, the set stands in comparison with the brand’s regular QLED models, albeit without that extra level of shine you tend to get with non-matt screens.
Part of The Frame’s visual appeal is the matt display. This absorbs reflections and creates a more painterly appearance with digital artworks.
Black level performance is fine, particularly if you view in a room with some low level of ambient lighting.

Watch in a fully dark room, though, and you’ll inevitably see the backlight at work. While watching Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (in UHD HDR on Sky Cinema) the letterbox bars on the widescreen presentation were slightly greyed out.

The Frame is available in 43-, 50-, 55-, 65-, 75-, and 85-inch screen sizes, priced at £899, £999, £1,099, £1,299, £2,199 and £2,799 respectively. We’re testing the 55-inch model specifically for this review.
In the US, The Frame is available in the same sizes, priced at $999, $1,299, $1,499, $1,999, $2,999 and $4,299 respectively. In Australia sizes begin from the 50-inch model, with pricing at AU$1,799, AU$2,099, AU$2,599, AU$3,499 and AU$5,299 respectively.
Like I say, those prices will fluctuate no doubt, and should a 2024 The Frame come to market then chances are they’ll only go south in a positive-for-your-purchase-decision fashion.
User Interface
When I first turned on this TV, there was something I didn’t like because it was so poorly designed.
And that’s due to Samsung’s aging Tizen operating system: the menu design is clunky and unintuitive, and it has this tendency to want to show you the Samsung TV Plus content all the time, even when I just want to change settings – It’s been quite frustrating to navigate.
Fortunately, connecting my Apple TV 4K solved the problem quickly, and I no longer had to deal with the Samsung operating system. The Apple TV looks fantastic on this panel with the bezel frame, thanks to the snappy A15 Bionic chip, 4K and HDR10+ and Dolby Vision support, and the Apple interface is much easier to use.
Another issue is that this TV isn’t cheap, costing more than $2,000 for the 65-inch model here, which is comparable to the Samsung QN90B or even the LG C2 OLED screen. But, there are a lot of sales for the Frame TV floating around – I was able to find this on sale for $1,500, which is a much more appealing price point.

Smart functionality is excellent. The Frame runs Samsung’s well-established Tizen OS, which offers a comprehensive selection of streaming services, including Samsung’s own linear IP delivered channel selection, as well as a dedicated Game Hub, and SmartThings dashboard.

There’s voice control via Bixby, Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa, as well as support for Apple AirPlay. Smartphone viewing modes include Multi-View and screen mirroring.
Navigating the Tizen OS is quite intuitive. You get a well-stocked app bar, followed by multiple rails of curated content, so you’re never too far from a show to watch.

There’s also a dedicated Game Menu with an overlay for relevant gaming info, such as VRR, HDR and input lag.
There are actually two Game mode settings: original and Game Motion Plus, which applies some extra processing for additional picture enhancement. Input lag was measured at 10.7ms (1080p/60fps) in Game mode, and 13.7ms (1080p/60fps) in Game Motion Plus.
