Cameras
There are two camera options on the Moto G54 5G, and while that’s down from the trio offered by many of its competitors, the main one is actually pretty good here – although I’m still surprised that Motorola paired its 50MP primary sensor with a 2MP macro rather than any ultrawide option.
You’re not going to get flagship-quality snaps, but you will find that it does a better job with colour than many of its contemporaries. Many phones in this price range can leave colour, particularly in subtle details, feeling washed out.
Check out the example here with Batman, though – if anything, it’s a little brighter than it was in real life on the yellow, and maybe a little too light on the grey areas. Still, there’s plenty of detail.

Things are much more consistent outdoors, too, catching shadows and darker areas and not doing what so many do and just making the whole thing brighter. That applies to photos at night, too, with the Night Vision setting doing a good job of softening harsh streetlights. It’s no Pixel 7a, but it’ll do for simple night shots.
Portrait mode, particularly when used on anything fast-moving (like a four-year-old or a very skittish cat), simply isn’t worth using on the back camera, but the front camera performs better.
Here, my biggest issue is just the way in which it muddies skin tones, particularly indoors or anywhere lacking in natural light. It does, however, do a decent job of applying bokeh around hair and ears.
Manufacturers keep adding Macro cameras, but aside from some quick focusing, it’s a disappointment here, as seen on this D20 which ends up just looking a bit blurry and lacking in detail.
Video-wise, you get 1080p video at 30- or 60fps, and either does a solid job of capture with the same caveats of its still camera setup.

Motorola Moto G54 5G review: Design
- Multiple colors, including vegan leather option
- Thinner and lighter than previous model
- Not always the most ergonomical
The majority of wallet-friendly phones now follow a very similar design language. Namely, plastic build, large-ish bezels (compared to the very best phones at least) and, in my experience anyway, they’ve all been lightweight and come in a selection of unexciting colors.
And, while the Moto G54 5G doesn’t deviate from the norm too much, I think there have been enough changes to make it look decidedly more premium and, dare I say, sexy? The review unit I received came in the Indigo Blue color, which employs an attractive vegan leather material on the rear. It’s a material often reserved for more premium devices to cement their premium status, so it was a genuine surprise to find Motorola has been able to get it to trickle down here – the company’s Razr 40 Ultra flip phone employs a similar material, for example. The result is a tactile phone that really is a joy to hold.
The other color options are Midnight Blue in Australia/UK and Mint Green and Glacier Blue in the UK – though they are all of a plastic-only persuasion.
Elsewhere it is largely business as usual. A large 6.5-inch screen dominating the front with a small punch hole camera in the top center. A small bump housing the two camera lenses is on the rear, and I’m pleased to say this bump barely protrudes at all, so when the phone is placed down on a surface it continues to sit flat.
A power button with built-in fingerprint sensor and the volume rocker are on the right edge, and it’s here that I did find a slight flaw. While the power button does sit at a natural height for one to use their thumb to unlock the phone – I did find using the fingerprint sensor unlocked the phone 9 times out of 10, and quickly too – the volume rocker, for me, sits too high up the right edge to be used comfortably. This is a tall phone, and I would say I have large hands and even I had trouble using it. I either had to shuffle the phone down in my hand, or move to two-handed operation. A minor issue to most, I would expect, but an issue I found nonetheless. I would have preferred to have seen the volume buttons placed at a more natural height on the left edge so I could adjust using my index and middle fingers.
Speaking of the left edge, it’s where you’ll find the SIM card and micro SD card tray, the latter being capable of accepting cards up to 1TB. The Moto G54 5G also supports eSIM along with physical SIM cards, and you’re welcome to use one of each in conjunction if you wish.
As with the Moto G53, there’s no mention of Gorilla Glass protection for the screen on the Moto G54, so I would recommend investing in a screen protector as a best practice safety precaution. Motorola also only advertises a water-repellent design, so while a splash of rain shouldn’t trouble the Moto G54, you’ll want to avoid any possibility of fully immersing it.

Battery Life & Charging
- Useful battery life
- Charger in box
- 15W charging
At 12 hours and 24 minutes of constant use, the Motorola G54 5G put on a good show in the battery life tests, which leaves the screen on and keeps the processor busy with a variety of media and office tasks. This will translate to much longer real-world usage, as the phone can turn the screen off and go into power-saving mode.
There’s a charger in the box, along with a detachable USB-A to C cable. This adapter saw the phone charge by 14% in 15 minutes, but hooking it up to a 60W saw the phone going into a TurboPower mode that warns of the extra heat likely to be generated. This didn’t charge it any quicker than the supplied charger, adding just 15% in 15 minutes as the phone is limited to 15W charging which isn’t exactly turbo speed.

Hardware, Performance & Gaming
For the internals, the moto g54 5G uses a new 6nm MediaTek Dimensity 7020 octa-core SoC clocked up to 2.2 GHz (2x Cortex-A76 and 6x Cortex-A55 processors) paired with an IMG BXM-8-256 (2-core) GPU, up to 12 GB LPDDR4x RAM, and a up to 256 GB UFS 2.2 storage.
The MediaTek Dimensity 7020 is a midrange SoC manufactured in a 6nm process and consists of 8x Cortex CPUs (2x Cortex-A76 and 6x Cortex-A55 processors). The two performance ARM Cortex-A78 cores are clocked at 2.2 GHz, and the six power-efficient ARM Cortex-A55 cores are clocked at 2.0 GHz.
About the variants, the smartphone comes in two RAM and storage options i.e. 8 GB RAM with 128 GB and a massive 12 GB with 256 GB storage, both with a microSD card expansion of up to 1 TB. The RAM is an LPDDR4x type and the storage is a UFS 2.2 type while the chip also comes in a different variant i.e. with LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 which is eventually faster in terms of overall performance.
The performance of the MediaTek Dimensity 7020 is quite similar to the Dimensity 6020, on paper, however, it’s slightly faster comparatively. It performs between Qualcomm Snapdragon 680 and Qualcomm Snapdragon 695 which means it’s faster than Snapdragon 680 and slightly below the Snapdragon 695. On the other hand, its upper-end sibling, the MediaTek Dimensity 7050 is significantly faster due to its higher clock speed and faster memory + storage combination – (2.6 GHz CPU, LPDDR5 RAM, and UFS 3.1 storage) when compared to the 2.2 GHz cores with LPDDR4X + UFS 2.2 on the moto G54 5G.
Moving to its gaming performance, the PowerVR’s IMG BXM-8-256 (8-core) is a new GPU and is categorized in the midrange segment GPU. It has a fairly good level of gaming performance so you can expect to run games on medium to high graphics settings. Compared to the counterpart ARM’s Mali-G57 MP2 (2-core), you can see there are 8 EUs (Execution Units) on the IMG BXM-8-256 compared to 2 EUs on the Mali-G57 MP2 and 259.2 Gflops vs 243.2 Gflops so, you can expect a slightly better performance in gaming. Apparently, it may not be noticeable.

Moto G54 5G first impressions
Motorola has wisely stuck with the 6.5-inch screen size, employing a 20:9 aspect ratio to ensure the handset isn’t too wide. At this size, it keeps the Moto G54’s height to a manageable 161.54 mm, so it feels well-balanced in your hand.
Assisting with this are well-placed volume and power buttons on the right, ensuring you don’t need to stretch too far and risk the handset toppling backwards out of your hand. Likewise, opting for a fingerprint reader built into the power button, rather than on the screen at the bottom, helps with ease of use and balance.
If you’re right-handed, it’s actually easiest to unlock the handset with your thumb. There’s also the option to the handset with Face Unlock.
While sticking with tried and true dimensions, the Moto G54 5G thankfully returns to a sharper 2400×1080 pixel screen, after the G53 5G scaled this down to a very disappointing 1600×720 pixels.
It’s a bright, crisp IPS LCD screen that is very pleasing to the eye, supported by a 120Hz refresh rate for silky smooth scrolling. The refresh rate adjusts automatically based on the type of content on the screen, to reduce its impact on battery life.
As with many Android phones, the screen’s colours might be a tad saturated for your liking, because they’re set to “Saturated” by default, but you can easily change this to “Natural” in the settings if preferred.
The Motorola Moto G54 5G regains a full HD display.
At the bottom of the handset, you’ll find a USB-C port for charging, along with a 3.5 mm headphone jack. The earpiece doubles as a second speaker for stereo sound, with support for Dolby Atmos.
The body is plastic rather than aluminium or glass, which you’d expect at this price point. Two models are available: Midnight Blue which comes with a premium matte finish and Indigo Blue which comes in a vegan leather finish.
Like most Motorola phones, the Moto G54 comes with a basic transparent protective case. It offers some impact protection but doesn’t seem as robust as something like a Tech 21 case. Once again, the phone has a “water-repellent” design, so it might survive a splash but won’t be happy with an unexpected dip.
Who is the Moto G54 5G for?
The Moto G54 5G is basically for anyone looking for a decent budget Android handset that doesn’t make too many compromises. Somehow Motorola managed to produce a better handset with a lower price tag, reassuring us that it’s still on the right track when it comes to great budget handsets.

Introduction
There comes a time in every phone reviewer’s life when it’s hard to get excited about, well, reviewing phones.
A lot of them are pretty homogenised, and while I’m not saying the Moto G54 5G has warmed this old cynic’s heart, it’s the first budget-focused 5G handset I’ve tested in a long, long time that feels as though it can be a jack of pretty much any trade without sacrificing its soul for 5G.
The best part is that the Moto G54 5G comes in at just £179/$200, and offers a larger, sharper display than many slightly more expensive phones, more consistent performance across pretty much everything, and a better camera.
I’ll get into each of those points in this review, but it really is a very solid buy for the same price as a quarter of an iPhone 15 – and the experience is pleasingly junk-free, too.
Of course, there are downsides – the LCD panel here is sharper but not brighter than a lot of its rivals, and the camera, better than it is, still feels damned with faint praise thanks to a lack of options.
But I’d also argue it’s a great-looking phone, something relatively unheard of in this price range.
Advantages of eSIM on the Motorola Moto G54
-
Dual SIM Flexibility: With eSIM technology, the Moto G54 allows users to have multiple phone numbers and data plans on a single device, eliminating the need to physically swap SIM cards. This is particularly beneficial for those who wish to maintain a work and personal number on a single phone, or travelers who want to use local numbers without changing their primary SIM card.
-
Remote Activation: eSIMs can be remotely activated, meaning you can choose and activate a plan directly from your device, without the hassle of visiting a physical store. This is incredibly convenient, especially when traveling to foreign countries, as it enables you to purchase and activate data plans on the fly.
-
Global Roaming: The Moto G54’s eSIM compatibility makes it a great companion for frequent travelers. Instead of swapping SIM cards or relying on costly international roaming plans, you can easily switch to a local eSIM data plan, enjoying faster data speeds and more affordable rates.
-
Enhanced Security: eSIMs offer a higher level of security, as they are tamper-resistant and less prone to physical damage or theft. This ensures that your connectivity remains robust and reliable, even in challenging situations.
Moto G54 Review: Verdict
At Rs 15,999, Motorola has nailed the pricing of the G54. The phone packs an impressive battery that can easily last two days. While most OEMs stick to the 8GB RAM mantra, Motorola tries its hands at a 12GB RAM variant, which is impressive.
While the Moto G54 gets almost all the things right, the use of an LCD display could be a drawback for some. Regardless, the output on the display is fairly decent, but if you are an avid multimedia enthusiast, an AMOLED display such as the one on the Samsung Galaxy M34 might entice you. But, the G54 gets an upper hand over most of the other smartphones in the audio department.
The performance is on par with the competition and is quite reliable for daily usage and a bit of gaming. The iQOO Z7 (Review) beats the G54 in this section, but sadly the phone does not seem to be listed anywhere as of now.
The software situation is fairly sorted with minimum bloatware and to an extent clean experience, but the one-year software promise is irksome. At least a two-year commitment would have been the way to go, especially considering brands like Samsung are promising multi-year Android updates.
Not just the phones mentioned above, there are plenty of other powerful options in this price range. If you prefer faster charging, for example, the OnePlus Nord CE 3 Lite (First Impressions) or the Realme 11 5G could be worthy contenders
All in all, if you are looking for a dependable smartphone in the Rs 20,000 bracket and don’t mind an LCD display, the Moto G54 deserves serious consideration.
